This DQ is down 5th Ave. It's quite small, but it has all of the goodies that one might want from DQ. I was craving a blizzard, so I stopped by on a Wednesday night, had really quick and kind service, and went home with a delicious blizzard. It had just the right amount of butterfinger to ice cream ratio. As others mentioned, the drive through line does go through the parking lot, so be cognizant of that if you are parking and walking up to DQ instead of doing the drive through. The drive through may also sometime take a little longer to get through because it is so close to the road, and 5th Ave. can be busy. But, great location, great treats, and nice service! read more

Update on the DQ on 5th: The definition of insanity is doing something repeatedly and expecting a different outcome. By this logic, I have clinically lost my mind. The DQ on 5th Ave always hold my highest hopes, and it shatters them and the pieces scatter throughout my broken heart like shrapnel, cutting me more with each blow. I wanted a Reese's cookie dough blizzard, a limited menu item only available for a short time, and what did I get? A god damn blizzard cup full of nothing but vanilla soft serve ice cream with the faintest hint of peanut butter, as if someone has whispered it to the unsuspecting frozen treat and it became lodged in its brain. To say the DQ on 5th was disappointing would not be a fair justdgment. Something that more equitably describes the hurt I feel suspecting to take a creamy, peanutty, chocolatey bit of my ice cream only to be met by vanilla is soul crushing. In the past, my biggest issue with this DQ was that they weren't consistent. I used to have issues with missing ingredients/not enough ingredients. I mentioned this is a previous review. Well, I'm not sure what happened since leaving my last review, but I have to say - things have changed! I have noticed a definite improvement in the quality of the things I have ordered. To be fair, it's mostly blizzards that I order, but still - haven't had a single issue with any of my blizzards in the past few months. They have been very consistent and they put lots of toppings in there! Maybe just one suggestion - wipe up the cups a bit before giving them to customers. This DQ usually has wonderful ice cream and good service. Today, my wife and I walked away from the walk-up window empty handed. It was apparent that they were understaffed when we came up to order and the drive thru was very busy. However, we waited patiently for at least 5 minutes as the staff inside wizzed by us several times without even acknowledging our presence. A simple, "we're really busy and will be with you shortly" would have been the appropriate way to handle the situation followed by a "sorry for the wait" upon getting to us. You can't go wrong with DQ in my opinion! This location is the closest to my apartment and I usually go here a few times in the summer (mostly through the drive thru). It's located in a great community in Grandview and in a popular area on 5th Ave. It's a unique DQ because you actually cannot go inside. It's like an old school Dairy Hut model where you either choose the drive-thru or walk up to the window. On a summer evening, there are usually a lot of people in the front window area and there is ample seating out back and a few benches to the side. I've never been disappointed going to this DQ. I opt typically for just a blizzard (Oreo Cheesequake is my fave!). However, on my most recent trip, I also got a chili dog and fries. I normally do not like their fries, but these ones were super fresh and tasty. My mouth started watering as soon as they handed me the bag! Only call outs about this location is that the parking/drive-thru is super tight, especially if you come at the wrong time. I also don't like that you can't turn left out of the drive-thru back onto 5th (although let's be honest, I've done it quite a few times). All in all, I'll keep coming back. I wish there was a location closer to the Short North, but this one in Grandview helps me get my DQ fix every now and then! read more

I ordered a fudge sundae, a milkshake, and a drink. the lady gave me my stuff but handed me a spoon that had chocolate all over it and it got all over me so I told her I don't want the spoon, she only handed me some napkins and kept the spoon. One that has a walk up window, a drive thru, and no dining room? Because this place embodies small town Americana, and if you can't appreciate that, you'd best move to a Soviet bloc nation state. This location has ice cream and greasy spoon fast food. It used to be called a Dairy Queen Brazier, with "brazier" denoting the existence of a grill and fryer, presumably. Chicken finger baskets, fries, burgers, hot dogs with chili...pretty standard summer restaurant fare. But wait, this place is open year round! That's right. It was -1 last night with a wind chill hovering around -20, but this hardy place withstood the elements, common sense, and expectations to serve me a large vanilla cone with krunch kote. Possibly a side note for my ranking...I was involved in my first car accident pulling out of the drive thru here. In the mid 1970s, my brother sideswiped a parked car while turning out onto 5th Avenue driving my mom's aircraft carrier sized Chrysler Satellite wagon. We parked and waited for the owner to return so we could arrange to pay for the damage. Eventually a drunk stumbled from a nearby watering hole, surveyed the minor damage, pronounced it was OK, and scarily drove off. (This being the Carter era, drinking and driving had seemingly not risen to the level of concern it now rightly occupies.) My relieved brother and I returned to DQ to secure bonus cones to fete our good fortune. If you see an open DQ, especially this one, pull in and have a dilly bar, a peanut buster parfait, an arctic breeze, a chocolate dipped cone, or even pick up a pricey ice cream cake for your family. This happens often - even when I ask for extra (and according to my receipt, am even charged for it). On 6/12/20 I visited the Dairy Queen at 1512 W 5th ave around 7:30pm. My husband and I ordered some food and ice cream. We were waiting about 15 minutes for our food when I caught a glimpse of the cook handling food with his hands with no gloves on. He was holding the bun I was about to eat with his bare hands. Gloves are an absolute must when handling food and even more so now with COVID, it is extremely disappointing that this was not happening until I pointed it out. Who knows how many other customers received food that was handled this way. Once I noticed this, I alerted one of the staff and she confronted him. She offered to have him remake the food. We waited another 15 minutes and finally the food was done. I walked away with the bag and found the food was all wrong. We ordered a burger and chicken tenders and received a burger and fries. I went back and this time just asked for a blizzard and dilly bars as an even exchange because I had now wasted close to 45 minutes, had the wrong food, and who knows who touched it with their hands. The staff said she could only honor one of the two even though I had just paid $15 and received nothing. I walked away furious with only dilly bars. This was an extremely poor incidence of customer service and I'm deeply disappointed. I hope to receive a response and a refund. read more

I never write reviews but I LOVE DQ and I am just writing this in hope they fix the negatives. This Dairy Queen is typically very busy and I go almost every Sunday. More times than not they give me the wrong flavor ice cream (vanilla instead of chocolate). I make sure to check before I leave and they correct it, no problem. Tonight I went and got a medium and when I looked it was the wrong flavor again so when they corrected it they gave me a small which noticeably less ice cream than the one I had to return. This is extremely frustrating especially because I paid more and got less. These mistakes happen all of the time. Other than that the ice cream is good and staff is friendly! No matter where I go in life, Dairy Queen will always hold a soft spot in my heart reserved just for soft serve. Where ever I've lived there's always been a DQ within walking (or at least short driving) distance. There's nothing more Americana to me than walking to a DQ at dusk during the summer while cicadas chirp and neighborhood kids ride by on their bikes. I don't think you'll quite get that experience at this DQ location, but you get the general idea. This particular 5th Avenue location has a drive thru and a walk-up window, but no seating inside. It's large enough to provide not only all things delicious and soft serve, but also surprisingly tasty burgers, chicken fingers, and fries. I will contend that Dairy Queen has some of the best fast food fries I have ever tasted. Little known fact, Dairy Queen has a "secret menu" like that famous burger place out west (anyone able to get me a complete list of Dairy Queen Secret Menu Items will be my hero). My secret, as a serious chocolate lover, is to always ask for my blizzard of choice with chocolate soft-serve. Since not all DQs carry the chocolate, I am extremely fond of the ones who do, like this location. Dairy Queen and me go way back. Growing up in rural Indiana, our town only had 3 places to eat: DQ, McDonalds & Pizza Hut. Not much going on there. DQ was the closest to me of the 3 and being how my mom didn't cook much, I often opted to head to DQ to pick up some grub. Once I got into High School, several ladies who all had massive crushes on me worked at the local Dairy Queen. I leveraged that to get all kinds of free ice cream, fries & food.
