June 3rd 2026 Ordered food around 5:00pm. Basically around $32.00 for two meals. Waited almost 25 minutes in our vehicle before food was brought out. No ketchup in bag as requested and the food was cold. Very disappointed with the whole experience. We stopped for a couple of salads and had intentions of going back for blizzards. I ordered a full sized salad and my wife, being less hungry, ordered a side salad. My wife's salad was amazingly small. About the lettuce for a couple burgers and just a little tomato. Less than one would expect for $3. Mine was "ok"but still smaller and bit different from what I receive at other D Qs. Our salads also sat on the counter for quite a while. They were delivering food to the tables for some people, calling numbers for others. They did neither for us and after waiting awhile we had to figure out that those salads were ours. This DQ even charged us .29 for a small water cup. After this, we skipped the blizzards. The absolute SLOWEST drive thru EVER that is literally intended to offer a "fast food" experience. By the time I got my food and was pulling away, it had been 1 full hour. No joke. Got home and there were items missing from the order. Wasn't about to go back and wait. They have had signs up to be patient with the training staff and it's the same guy that has worked in there for months. No excuse. I wanted some BBQ chicken fingers, an order of cheese curds, and a small drink. I did not ask for a meal. I wanted them separate. They came in a box with toast and the sauce had smeared onto the cheese curds. I had to tear away half of the box because the lid is incorporated into the box (which you are supposed to eat out of AND because the inside of the "lid" was covered in BBQ sauce. No way to get into the box without making a HUGE mess of my hands. OK...I took a bite...the chicken was burnt...the sauce was cold...I took a bite of another piece and it was dried out and, at best lukewarm. Moving on. I popped a cheese curd in my mouth and it tasted like fish. I asked my husband if they served fish here and he looked at the menu and said yes. They fry their cheese curds and fish in the same oil folks! YUCK! Service - one gal was busy here and there with the drive-thru and the other was busy filling ketchup containers. We came in third! The only fast food place in John Day since the McDonalds closed. The menu is extremely limited even by Dairy Queen standards. COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted but only drive through is permitted. All of the specials are permanently 'Sold Out' however, higher priced items are available. I suspect price gouging due to the current situation or terrible management. Dairy Queen did respond (see below) and asked me to go back to their website. I did and went down the rabbit hole in trying to respond directly with them. It was too time consuming to fill out a form when I stated what was clearly wrong here on Yelp. Besides, the responses given by Dairy Queen seem to be canned by reading the format. Between the time that I posted my review here on Yelp 30 days ago and now, I noticed the 'sold out' stickers on their outside menu have are STILL there. The inside dining area is STILL closed. I tried to order a Chicken Sandwich today (which was still on the menu). We don't do Chicken was the response. For this, I lowered my last generous score of two stars to one star. I still feel very generous in giving them that. I just wonder why they were the LAST place in Grant County that's not fully opened up and have ongoing shortages on the menu? The Subway across the street didn't have any of these issues nor any of the other places to eat here in John Day. Would I recommend the John Day Dairy Queen to anyone? No! Gotta sweet-tooth urge during our one-night stay at the Dreamers Lodge Motel just a block north of here, so we hoofed over to this DQ for a seasonal pumpkin pie Blizzard. It was pretty good. But, what makes this a DQ unlike most others is that there's a nice model train set in the dining room which runs a decent minute-long course through a landscape that looks kinda like John Day's natural surroundings. We arrived to a completely empty restaurant, and waited for several minutes at the drive up to place our order. We ordered two meals, by number, and then drove to the window. after several minutes, a girl opened the window and asked us what we had ordered. The two girls there then seemed very confused, and asked again what we ordered. Then after some more confusion, the girl at the window took our 30.00 for two burger meals. After about five minutes, a car arrived behind us, and the driver got out of his car and entered the restaurant, where we heard him asking what was going on. a few minutes later we got our meals. They got the drinks right. The burgers were nothing like what we ordered,and the meat tasted like some very weird concoction, but not like beef at all. Wrong burgers, wrong sides, and a ridiculous price. But the service was horrible! Benny should be paying more attention, and STOP using that "meat". read more

Our granddaughter was given a $10 gift certificate to DQ so while we were all driving through John Day, we decided to stop in at their Dairy Queen. Everyone in our group (except me) had an ice cream cone and I had a soft drink. Nothing special; everyone was happy. Everything was clean. Got in line at 8:50 p.m. Truck in front of us took a long time to order. Light on order board went out as we were at screen. Woman said, "We're closed." I said, "We've been in line." She said, "We close at 9:00." Wow. We wondered if it was because one of us was Black. This place is ligit crap. I get that it's not fast food, but fan food? Clearly not. Someone will order icecream way after you and they will still get it way before can even see yours being made. And the quality of the "frozen" part of this place is trash. Everything is runny and they will sit there on the counter and the workers will ignore it. Half time, you'll even get the wrong order. I worked here once, and it really isn't that hard not to screw everything up. I grew up here and this Dairy Queen has went downhill terribly since I was younger. I have been there 4-5 times in the last month and a half. The wait in the drive has been 15-20 mins. When placing orders in the drive through there is no confirmation of getting the order or response at all or that matter. I have had to ask "Are you still there?" Or "Did you get that?" Sometimes the order takers will be talking to others in the background and won't hear what I ordered and say "Huh?!". Also I will make a request and have been told "Oh we can't do that here." and the next time I ask there is no problem. This has all been multiple times!!!
