So many options. Can I have one of each, please!

When I grew up in the Bronx, we had heard about Dairy Queen but there were none that I knew of in my neighborhood. When I had 50 cents to spare I usually headed to Carvel or bought an ice cream from one of the many trucks that rode through our neighborhood ranging from Good Humor to Bungalow Bar Jump ahead to 1989. I am living in Rutherford, New Jersey with my wife, Susan and our two young children Erik and Devon. One of the reasons I wanted to move to Rutherford was I noticed that they had a Dairy Queen and somehow in my mind that sounded very cool and an omen of a good place for us to live. Suddenly, I was able to say to Susan and the kids, "Who wants to DQ?" Hands went up, we hopped in the car and within a couple of minutes we were at the Rutherford Dairy Queen. I remember how cute the kids looked after devouring a soft serve cone with sprinkles and half of it was all over their face. Sweet memories It's 2019 and my friend, Michael and I head down to my place for a couple of days. It's his first time to my place and to the North Carolina beaches. We had a great time. Of course we hit the DQ and he bought me a large mint chocolate chip grasshopper type blizzard. I never had a large before. I went into a coma halfway through and swore I would save the rest for another day. It was gone before bedtime. So delicious It's 2020 and we are in the heart of the pandemic. Thank God, I had Oak Island to run to when I needed a reminder of what life used to be and the ability to walk around freely on the beach without a mask. I cannot tell you how many times during the pandemic I ran down to my little place to have some sense of normalcy and remember how beautiful the world really is. I would go by the Dairy Queen on Oak Island Drive which is as much a part of Oak Island life as are the turtles that hatch during the summer time. I order a vanilla soft serve dipped cone in chocolate. Memories of having something similar at the Carvel. The tall Dairy Queen sign is gone and all that stands is a cracked concrete base. One of the hurricanes blew it away. I wonder if they will ever put another one back. I miss seeing it It's 2021 and although we are still living in the pandemic, Amy and all her family decide to come down to Oak Island and rent an oceanfront house. All my kids come down as well. For one week there was no covid, there were no masks, there was no fear of dying. Just a week of sand and water and laughter and good eating and relaxing and talking and resting and swimming and sandcastle building and turtle watching and friendship and family.. and Dairy Queen. As Jordana and I ate our desserts in the parking lot of the Dairy Queen, I turned to her and asked her as a doctor in her opinion if there was covid here in the parking lot. Without a moment of hesitation she turned to me and said, "Of course. It's everywhere". Boy, did she turn out to be right. Everyone one of us has either had it or knows somebody close to us who has had it. I remember the conversation, but I also remember that even though we were all living in fear, the line at the Dairy Queen was very long and the parking lot was packed. If I am to die, let it be with an ice cream spoon in my mouth and rainbow sprinkles all over my face! Eating ice cream or soft serve out tends to be a little bit on the expensive side but in the world of crazy prices, this Dairy Queen is okay. But what you will get for sure is something cold, smooth and delicious filled with good memories and a great taste!!

$6.74 for medium chocolate milk shake. Ridiculous. $3.99 for a milkshake at Cook Out. You make the decision.

Our waiter and the staff were all friendly, attentive, and genuinely helpful throughout the evening. We started with the fried shrimp appetizer, which had far too much breading and overwhelmed the shrimp itself. The hush puppies were crispy on the outside but undercooked and doughy in the center. My husband and I both ordered the OKI Surf & Turf. The crab cake was the standout of the meal--flavorful and well prepared--but the filet tasted more like a sirloin than a tender filet. My mother-in-law ordered the scallops, which arrived undercooked and had to be sent back. While the kitchen quickly corrected the issue, the scallops that came back had a weird texture. We also had a Caesar salad and a garden salad. Both were fresh enough, but neither was particularly memorable. The garden salad included Asiago cheese, which overpowered the other ingredients rather than complementing them. $3 extra for each salad-- not worth it. The atmosphere was beachy and casual with tons of young families. The bar had an older crowd but fun. I would suggest that the bar should have a frozen drink machine or blender for frozen drinks. Overall, the service was great and the staff worked hard to make our experience enjoyable, but the food was disappointing and not something we'd go out of our way to return for.

They were pretty busy during Friday lunch before a big holiday weekend. We got our meal to go because I did not realize that they were not dog friendly. Completely my fault because I did not check ahead. I knew that surrounding places with outdoor dining were so I assumed incorrectly. Not a big deal since there are lots of benches in the area to sit by the waterfront. I ordered the Grouper Salad sandwich, my husband got Thee special that came with 1/2 lb. peel and eat shrimp, crab cake, corn on cob with sides of cocktail and tarter sauce, and my daughter got the regular lunch special with came with shrimp, crab cake, and sauces. Unfortunately, my daughter's lunch only had the 1/4 lb. of shrimp when she opened her box so she had to hoof it back and wait In line again to get her crab cake and sauces. Thankfully, I texted her a copy of the receipt because they gave her a bit of a run around regarding her missing items. I should have gone in there with her. Several staff members asked to see the receipt and then asked if she was sure of what she ordered. If I had known they were going to give her a time, I would have taken care of it myself. Don't get me wrong, I get it. I worked in food service for many years but when a customer shows you a receipt, then tells you there was mistake, and is polite about it, the customer usually doesnt have to explain the issue to multiple people. It is off putting to put the customer to task for your mistake. They gave her a free small drink, which she appreciated. Other than the order mishap, our food was pretty standard. The tarter sauce was nice and thick but was warm. The crab cake was better than some I have had but a bit dry. I cannot say the meal was worth what we spent. My Grouper sandwich was the highlight but for $10.95 and no side it won't be enough for us to return. I am glad we got to try them out while we were there. We have lots of friends that love it. I think our experience would have been better if we had eaten there instead.

However, the service was unusually slow, even by fast food standards. We first visited in the morning for breakfast and ended up waiting more than 15 minutes in the drive-thru line. We assumed it was just a fluke -- maybe short-staffed or a rush -- so we gave it another try at lunchtime. Unfortunately, the experience was nearly identical. After sitting in the drive-thru for over 15 minutes again, it took an additional 7 to 8 minutes just to receive our food once we had placed the order. To be clear, the staff was polite and courteous -- we were greeted warmly with "Thanks for coming in today" and "Have a good morning" -- but the overall speed of service made it hard to justify the return visit. Fast food should be fast, and this location missed the mark on that front both times we visited

I almost feel like I have the beach to myself. There have been years that I have celebrated New Year's in Amsterdam, New York on a cruise ship or sometimes like this year, in my robe and pajamas by myself, reflecting on a great year that just passed. On New Year's Day I decided to treat myself to a restaurant, but Oak Island and Southport are not any different than Greensboro and most establishments on this holiday.. Most things were closed. I did notice as I was riding around that there was a Mexican restaurant open in one of the new shopping strips in Southport called Los Primos Mexican Restaurant and I decided to give it a shot. Parking was right in front and the OPEN sign was blinking!! It was a very casual setting which I appreciated considering I was in my sweats and baseball cap. It had a mixed feeling of a casual restaurant and a bar which was fine by me, even though I don't drink! The waitress was very welcoming, and before I knew it I had a tall glass of Diet Coke and a basket of chips with salsa. My son-in-law Steven enjoys mole and so I decided to give it a shot and had a burrito with the mole topping. Wow! That was delicious. A combination of sweet and savory. I will definitely try that again and although I don't have anything to compare it to, I thought Los Primos did a really good job with that dish. I enjoyed watching locals Come in and reflected on 2025 over this delicious Mexican lunch. I thought it was also fairly priced and a good alternative to my normal visit to San Felipe which was closed. I have been wavering between giving this restaurant a four or a five but I'm going to give them the top mark for the following reasons. Their prices were moderate, food was very tasty, the diet coke kept coming, the mole was tasty, they were open on New Year's Day and service was excellent and for a restaurant/ bar, I thought they did a great job. Gracias Los Primos ! Hasta luego!!
