My boyfriend and I were able to get a same day reservation for the 8:45 pm seating. I had heard amazing things and was excited to try the food. Everything was outstanding. I cannot emphasize how professional and courteous the small staff was. I'll first say if you have a later seating, street parking will likely be available. The establishment is hidden but beautiful on the inside. I don't think I got to take in the decor enough but from what I saw, it was very classy and full of West African artwork. The handwashing experience was also unique and I loved it. Now to the food. From beginning to end, everything was fantastic, not like anything I've ever tasted. I don't want to give everything away but it was truly that good. I did the wine pairing as well and everything was very tasty. My boyfriend had the mocktail pairing, which I didn't know was an option and they were tasty and different as well. I can't forget the presentation. Each dish was unique and looked to be handmade. Okay back to the food. The habanero butter for the bread was a surprise. It paired so well with the sweetness of the bread. The crudo was also lovely on a yam tart. Who does that?? Dakar does!! Unique and delicious. The grilled shrimp and mushroom were cooked to perfection. I honestly ate everything, even the black eyed peas which I usually do not. We also added the lobster which was delicious as well. The start of the show for me was the entree. The fish had a crispy skin that was just, amazing and the jollof rice. About a 3mi drive out from the convention center, Dakar is a delightful Senegalese restaurant serving delectable bites. At first I was hesitant about the family style format, and about Senegalese cuisine since I've never had it before, but both were non-issues. We arrived about 5 minutes past our dining time at 4:30pm (there are also 8pm seatings) but we didn't get started until perhaps 4:45pm or so. The dress was casual, servers were polite and efficient, and the food was thoughtful. Some of my favorites from the night included: - Attaya drink: We were told this had ginger and tumeric. It had a fun celery-like foam. - Dakar Bread: The Palm oil rolls were sweet and salty perfection. The butter was nice but the rolls were great even without the spiced butter. - Yellow Fin Suya: This was my favorite. The tuna and crème fraiche and small shrimp all came together in a delicious bite. - Dibi: Wonderful flavor on the shrimp - Wafe: The skin on the Gulf fish was excellent - The palate cleanser with the grape/mint/sugar/sherbet was fantastic The dinner lasted about an hour and a half and it was still light enough to walk, although towards the evening the neighborhoods got more and more sketchy. We were greeted and seated, and there was a hand washing ceremony before the dining presentation began. Really love that. Went to last Tuesday and left kind of annoyed, honestly. I went in excited because of all the hype and the James Beard buzz and the price. I figured it would be one of those meals where you walk out blown away and stuffed and already planning your next visit. Instead I walked out still hungry and mostly wondering what I just paid for. It's a tasting menu, which sounds great on paper, but everything came out so small that it never really felt like I was eating a full course of anything. Just a few bites, then it's gone, then on to the next. Over and over. At some point it stops feeling refined and starts feeling skimpy. A couple moments were genuinely good and showed real skill, but then there were long stretches where I was just like... that's it? It felt padded, like they were trying to make it feel longer and fancier instead of making every part actually hit. For $165 a person before tax and tip, closer to $200 all in, I expected to be impressed the whole way through or at least full by the end. I got neither. Nice service and a pleasant room, sure, but vibes don't make up for leaving dinner still thinking about grabbing food after. There were a few highlights, but not enough to justify the cost. If only a couple parts are memorable and the rest are just fine, that's not a $200 experience. Not terrible, just not worth it. Feels like you're paying for the reputation more than the food. What an extraordinarily unique and delicious dining experience!! I have no photos because I wanted to be able to soak the experience in device-free. (I will 100% be back, and photos will be snapped, lol.) This new Dakar location is beautifully decorated with seating for maybe 20 guests total, and I loved be able to peer over at the kitchen staff creating their masterpieces! I enjoyed how the entire dining room received all courses at the same time..it felt homey and communal. There was not ONE dish that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. Like, at least 8.9/10 for all courses. I can't chose a favorite, lol. The drinks were refreshing and paired well with the seafood options. The staff were just so kind and welcoming..the feel of the experience was almost that of a home dinner party. I visited here for the first time last Saturday. We had to make reservations about 3 weeks out to get our preferred time. We chose the individual reservation option as opposed to the family-style option. You do have to pay for your meal when making the reservation and the price is hefty but the experience is worth it in my opinion. There is street parking nearby. The restaurant is located in a residential neighborhood. So, you may just have to drive around a little to find parking. It is not a large restaurant but I really liked the decor and overall atmosphere. There didn't seem to be any strict dress code. Some diners were dressed more casually but my friend and I wore dresses. The staff were all very pleasant and attentive in a good way. There were several dishes brought out one behind the other and the food presentation was lovely. It was a great experience to be able to try dishes that I had never tried before. I enjoyed the food dishes. I also really enjoyed the ginger and tumeric-based beverage that came with dinner as well as the ginger and turmeric-based beverage that I purchased separately. My friend and I choose to add on the lobster special to one of our courses. The addition was pricey but worth it to expand the experience. It is clear that the owners and staff have high standards. When I was vetting this place for dinner, I saw a few bad reviews and took them as "they must not be used to a pre-fixed menu," or I'd disregard them because they gave Burger King a 5. But I would like to apologize to those people because this place is extremely mediocre and overpriced. I do not mind paying whatever the cost may be if the art and flavors are there, but here they are not. However, this is the one example that can be somewhat universally used to let you know that I have some experience with respected restaurants. Let's get it going. The bread they bring as a starter could be mistaken for boxed-mix bread. The presentation says otherwise, but really, the Dollar General clearance section likely has better options. Additionally, I informed them that I could not have shrimp due to allergies, and they really had the audacity to replace it with a vegetable dish that my mother would force me to eat as a kid. The only standouts were the cassava-based plate and their main entree, a snapper. The former was great in presentation, flavor profile, and uniqueness. The snapper was good, but not worthy of a grand finale at a place that lets you trust them with a pre-fixed menu. The drinks scream, "We want them to be good, but our beverage director can only take us this far." They are very underwhelming. The dessert was a small scoop of sorbet over a day-old tasting "cookie." What? Their service is robotically good, and their atmosphere is cozy and welcoming. I just love the fact that a community seating option is available if you are on your own or just feel like you want to get to know some new people. The welcome experience includes a traditional handwashing over a basin and an explanation of African / Senegalese practices. The only option is the chef's tasting menu which provides for seven courses (changes, seasonally) of the most different and wonderful food experience I've enjoyed in a long time. Starters include a warm tea with mint foam and breadsticks all for a Taste Of what yet to come. The fusion dishes were amazing. Loved the heat in some of the dishes and the jellies offered to add more if you were up for it! Dakar NOLA's tasting menu is inspired by Chef Serigne Mbaye's mother. Chef Serigne earned his stripes with a great deal of experience , including the famed Commanders Palace (think Emeril Lagasse,Paul Prudhomme, and a number of other great chefs) Recognized as one of the best new restaurants of 2024 by the James Beard organization, this restaurant did not disappoint. After receiving the 2024 James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant, Best New Restaurant in Esquire, and much national press, we had to try them out. We were fortunate to get a reservation in the slow tourist time in January. So reserve early. Two seatings - 4 PM and 8 PM. So it is a seasonal seven-course pescatarian tasting menu that features rich, bold and aromatic flavors of Senegal and NOLA. The only additions are cocktails and the "wine" pairing. First, a great space. EXCELLENT service. We will not describe the dishes - see the attached pics of some - and as the menu changes regularly. But many dishes will be "different" but tasty and extremely well presented. It was fabulous and memorable. One of us did the pairing ($100) and amazingly it was worth it (many such pairings are small pours, inexpensive wines or spirits, and sometimes they don't "pair." One of the dishes used a Madeira! It was phenomenal and one of the more unique tastings I've ever had, which added to the experience. We came here for my wife's birthday as she was super excited about eating here. Not being able to see the menu online and not really having a sense of what was served here, I was skeptical, but my wife was right. This was probably the best meal I've had this year. The meal started with a tea service. I don't drink tea. Don't like tea. But I actually enjoyed the mint and ginger green tea starter. I was a refreshing palate cleanser and start to the meal. Every bite that followed was flavorful and well-balanced. Dakar is about exploring the African roots (specifically Senegal) of some southern dishes, and what struck me was that a lot of the flavors that I was tasting were new to me. And that was the real treat about eating here was discovering new flavors done excellently. My favorites were the okra, crab, and palm oil soup with palm bread and spiced butter, the Jën (gulf fish in yassa sauce), and the Thiakry pie for dessert. The Thiakry pie was so decadent and just an absolute flavor bomb to end the evening on. While you're there, definitely don't skip on getting drinks. The cocktail selections were incredible. What really stood out for me was the Carver's Impact. In the spirit of exploring new flavors, a mescal drink with suya spice and chili oil was just something you won't find at many other cocktail joints but they hit it out of the park with that one. Dakar looks like they built it out of a large, older house, and the decor and ambiance were perfect. The service was top-notch as to be expected with a reastaurant with as many accolades as Dakar has received. Dakar NOLA - A $1300 Disappointment Four of us dined at Dakar. The bill? $1300. Only one of us had the wine pairing. And sadly, the most memorable part of the experience wasn't the food -- it was the complete lack of professionalism, the harsh ambience, and the jaw-droppingly bad way we were treated at the end of the night. Let's start with the reservation process: It was a nightmare. I called multiple times -- no one answered. I was told texting was the best option. I texted. No reply. I tried again. And again. And again. Five texts, two calls, one email, one online submission -- zero response. That's over 10 attempts. Not once did anyone acknowledge me. This would be unacceptable at any restaurant, let alone one charging $300+ per person. The ambience? Borderline insulting. The dining room is flooded with unfiltered halogen light -- like eating in a strip mall buffet. The space is sparse and loud, with zero warmth or atmosphere. No linens, just bare wood tables. The bathroom doors have hollow $5 twist handles -- you know, the kind you'd find in a gas station. There's no separation between the outside street and the dining room. It's as if no one designing this place considered guest comfort or experience. The food? Tasty but forgettable. Not bad -- but not special. Nothing transcendent. Nothing worth $1300. Portions were tiny, and there wasn't a single dish that stopped us in our tracks. Worse, the staff consistently reduced Senegalese cuisine to comparisons like: * "This rice is basically like jambalaya." * "That's just a hot dog." * "Basically crawfish étouffée." This felt lazy and dismissive. Senegalese food deserves better than being repeatedly described as southern comfort food -- especially at this price point. To their credit: The service during the meal was attentive. The staff wiped tables between courses, folded napkins, and answered wine and cocktail questions with confidence. It's what you'd expect at this level. But the hospitality ended there. At exactly 10:30 PM, the lights snapped on full-blast. Staff began stacking tables and mopping the floor while we were still seated. We asked the maître d' if this was a mistake. He replied, "The night is over. It's time to leave." After spending $1300, we were literally being swept out the door under fluorescent lighting. It was appalling. My wife called it offensive, and she's right. It felt like they'd taken our money and couldn't wait to push us out. Bottom line: * The food is fine, but not worth the hype or the price. * The ambience is cold and amiture. * The service before and after your meal is shockingly bad. * If you're paying this much, you should feel respected -- not ignored and then rushed out like an inconvenience. This is a must do for any foodie! A friend recommended this place to me and I knew I had to come. I was a little hesitant about an almost $200/person pay upfront reservation, but trust me it's worth every cent. The space is cozy and has a casual but well appointed dining space. I was dining alone and was seated at a community table. I have yet in my life to ever meet a stranger so this was totally fine with me. My companions were visiting from Italy, Australia, and Bolivia. They were equally excited about the experience. The first course is a traditional ginger tea with green tea foam. According to the Chef, the tea is traditionally served at the end of the meal. It is considered an honor to be invited to stay for tea by your hosts. The meal unfolded course by course. Each dish was beautifully prepared and executed. The team introduced each course explaining the ingredients and any history behind dish itself. Prior to the main course, Chef came out to formally welcome us to their home. He explained the history behind his cooking and his concept for Dakar. This was a phenomenal experience for me. I am passionate about Creole and Cajun cuisine. Senegalese food was a new experience for me and I'm disappointed it took me this long to experience this. Of course, they have set very high expectations for any West African or Senegalese food I have in the future. Just a note, I have chosen not to write about the dishes themselves and just on my incredible experience. We had a large group separated into two tables with some strangers joining in the communal table-style dining room, which ended up being a fun experience. The chef was super nice and came out to answer questions throughout the meal, making the ambiance relaxed and fun. WOW!! Truly the most delectable meal during my recent visit. In fact, I've been craving Dakar since returning home. The service is 5-star and I loved the communal dining set-up.
