What an experience! Dooky Chase is a museum with excellent food! I was overwhelmed being in a place where soooo many great people have visited and eaten. So many people who are responsible for the lives of myself and other Black folks (a lot of what they risked their lives for extends to POC who don't even like us but that's a whole 'nutha story) being easier than those who came before us. Thank you, Dooky Chase for your role in the Civil Rights movement! My daughter and I had a 2pm reservation on a gorgeous, sunny (and hot) Friday afternoon. We arrived a few minutes early along with a couple of other parties who also had 2pm reservations. We were invited to wait at the bar. Well, the bar area is also a museum! With dranks. As we spoke to the kind, beautiful, wonderful and informative lady at the bar (a family member of Mrs. Leah Chase), she'd mentioned that Mr. James Baldwin used to sit in a corner of that very bar and write. I'm like, "that corner...right over there?" Yes, that corner. I had to go sit in Mr. Baldwin's corner. Wooosh! There is something about N'awlins. You can just feel the energy! Anywho, not long after, we were called and escorted to our table. The restaurant is so elegantly decorated. There's artwork all around. It's an experience and a half. Our waitress was great. Informative! She asked if we had any allergies and was very knowledgeable about every thing on the menu. My daughter had the fried chicken and I, the stuffed shrimp. The stuffed shrimp comes with perfectly seasoned potatoes. It was delicious and plentiful. Tasted even better the next day when I heated up the leftovers. I'd also had the yams (exceptional), mac n' cheese (a little too salty but still good), and potato salad (perfect)! I didn't have a drink because I'd just finished a frozen Irish coffee with a shot of butterscotch whisky from Molly's at the Market (yum). My daughter and I had gotten into a deep conversation about politricks. At some point, I'd noticed that the restaurant had gone very quiet. It had gone from a full dining room to just us and another table of diners. I see now that the restaurants closes at 3pm on Friday and re-opens at 5:30 for dinner. No one rushed us or told us we'd have to leave. If we didn't get up on our own, they might've let us sit there. I mean, had they told us they had an afternoon, temporary closing, we would've been cool with it. But, nope. They let us enjoy our meals and time in their wonderful, historical establishment. Before our visit, I was wondering if Dooky Chase would be the kind of place where all the hype is in the history and the food would suffer. Came here when they opened for dinner on Saturday w/o a reservation, many people waiting outside. The hosts were very nice and found a spot for us after a short wait. All servers were nice and welcoming. Seemed like they forgot about us so took some time for our order to be taken but they were very nice/apologetic about it. Lots of sweet family celebrations and get togethers around us. Got the beet salad, crawfish etouffee and peach cobbler. The complimentary bread was forgettable, the etouffee was good but not necessarily memorable either. The peach cobbler was the most memorable, very yummy! The place is a culinary and cultural icon. It's been family run through several generations, and when you walk in, you can feel the specialness of the place. Our server was wonderful and the person filling our waters said something along the lines of eating here was like if you were invited to someone's home and they cooked you up their favorites. He was right. I got the red beans and rice with fried chicken, which was so crispy and well-seasoned. I also split the peach cobbler with my husband and appreciated that it wasn't too sweet and perfect with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. We took the street car and made the easy walk to get here; it's almost a direct shot. I've been to New Orleans several times but never had enough time to make it here. Dooky gets kudos for historic significance and warm hospitality. But the food? I got a bowl of gumbo and a shrimp Poboy, and neither was noteworthy. The gumbo tasted like something i'd get in a high school cafeteria. The Poboy was even more lackluster, tasteless fried shrimp sandwiched between wonder bread. Being Creole myself I was absolutely excited to visit this historic New Orleans mainstay. Please note that reservations are highly recommended. The day I visited the restaurant was Reservation Only!! Luckily for us we had the required reservation and were promptly seated after arriving. Our server Caitlin was absolutely great. She was kind and attentive. She provided clear and detailed recommendations based on our questions and requests. She had the perfect balance between service and allowing us time to enjoy ourselves. She definitely contributed to the overall experience. The cocktails were delicious and very well mixed. Shoutout to the bartender for sure!! Food was pretty good with highs and some lows. A few highs included the Crab Cake app, BBQ Shrimp(Creole Style) savory not sweet and the Macaroni and Cheese. The entrées we had were delicious but as I mentioned Im Creole and cook this type of food on the regular and expected an EXCEPTIONAL food experience. We made our reservations as soon as we could after booking our vacation! We were so excited about coming here for lunch. We came on a Tuesday afternoon. I cannot begin to tell you how awesome it was to come here and enjoy the experience and the food! So much history in those walls. Still family run which is awesome! I've heard so much about Dooky Chase, so my husband and I had to stop by during our Easter trip to NOLA this year! We arrived at open on Friday morning and were quickly shuffled into the restaurant. The vibe was great and I enjoyed looking at all the art and photos hanging on the walls on the way to the host stand. We were seated at a two person table near the entrance and ordered some items to share. The seafood gumbo was sadly more watery than I usually like it, and the shrimp was pretty overcooked, but the meatball/sausage was delicious and the flavor was great. Red beans and rice was excellent and the chicken was well fried but a bit underseasoned. We finished with a peach cobbler for dessert and it was delicious a la mode. Service was very slow despite the restaurant not being busy, and the wait can be long without a reservation. Overall, it felt more like a tourist stop than a family meal. We'd rate the food a 4/5, but it didn't stand out compared to other Nola restaurants, and getting a reservation took several tries. Pains me to give 2 stars. I made a reservation a month ahead of time because that's what you have to do if you want to come for dinner. They only serve dinner on weekends. Get lots of texts from resy.com saying I will be charged a fee for no show. Has to be canceled 24 hrs in advance. No problem. Got an uber over here with 10 minutes to spare. Our reservation was for 730. I believe we got a table at 815ish. Best service was at the bar while we are waiting to be seated. Of course the whole time Im getting text about this no show fee even tho we checked in when we arrived. Great pics of past guests etc. History. That's why we came. After we got a table we sat for 20 minutes without seeing a waitress. And yes we stopped 2 folks for service. No someone will be with you. It was I will tell someone. I heard that Dooky Chase's was the #1 must visit restaurant in New Orleans so obviously I had to go before the end of my trip. A few things you should know. You absolutely want to make a reservation, it's unlikely you'll be able to walk in especially if you have a larger group. Upon making your reservation they ask you to put a card down; if you no call no show you'll be charged $25 per person I believe. They do not do split checks, like many restaurants in New Orleans and lastly, there is a dress code. Because of these stipulations I was a bit nervous but it was super worth it. The dining room is enveloped in beautiful artwork on every wall! There's so much history wrapped into this restaurant. Along the walkway in, there are the names of historic Black figures and the history behind the restaurant on the front of the menu. Service was good, professional and speedy. Now for the food, they are famously known for their gumbo and the fried chicken. This place is a must visit as the foods were honestly exceptional & it is a civil rights landmark. If you watched the Disney movie "the princess and the frog", one of the owners inspired the movie. They don't take reservations for dinner & we were so lucky we were able to get a 8pm slot! We waited at the waiting room bar area next door until they notified us. The bar area was very laid back and loved the abita beers (that amber lager was so delicious and smooth!). We were very hungry so we ordered many to share: 1) gumbo, 2) side of baked mac and cheese, 3) side of string beans , 4) fried chicken plate, 5) redfish, 6) shrimp clemencea, 7) peach cobbler w ice cream. Wow! Everything was amazing. The gumbo, mac and cheese, fried chicken, shrimp clemenceau were the stars of the show. It was the best we have eaten! I can taste the love poured into the foods. I guess nobody thinks to try then they are usually booked up. The inside is beautiful with interesting art pretty much from floor to ceiling. Started with a creole gumbo turned out to be a perfect way to start the meal had a very rich delicious base. For my main I got the red beans with fried chicken, cause you have to. Wow o wow did I LOVE this place! We came into town for a food tour and this was one of the best places we tried. We shared our food family style so we were able to try more things and it was so good. Our server Haley (sp) was so sweet and everyone we interacted with was so nice. I would 100% go back and get the gumbo, creole shrimp and creole chicken. End the meal with peach cobbler and ice cream and you've got a 11/10 meal right there. The owner even came out to check on us at the end. The outside is a cute lil place but the inside has artwork and pictures creating such a nice atmosphere for a good meal. I took a NOLA RTA red trolley from the Riverwalk on Canal St, got off and walked 15 mins through the hood, stood in line at Dooky Chase for 30 mins, just for some uppidity maître d' to say I needed to have made a reservation prior. I admit, my bad, but I asked dude if he could make an exception because I didn't know I had to rsvp and that I came from Los Angeles and been wanting to eat here for years. Dude said no. Then, I asked if I could eat at the bar. Dude said no. Then, I asked if I could order to go. Dude said no. Dude wasn't having it. His attitude was bad; 25 yrs ago I would've gave him smoke. Bad business and a bad reflection on Dooky Chase, I'm still sharing the pics because it's still an iconic establishment but they'll never get my business. I never heard of a restaurant in the hood you had to make reservations for. But at Dooky Chase's Resturant you do. Wow! I've been living here for 13 years and this was my first time going to Dooky Chase and it makes me sad that I've wasted all this time. I managed to score a lunch reservation about 2 weeks before we went so make sure to plan in advance. As most people, I've learned about Leah Chase and the restaurant through many cooking shows, but the history and the pavers listing many of the notable people who have been to the restaurant is something to be admired. It was a bit hectic when we first arrived and it took a while to get seated. The hostess stand had a sign detailing their dress code, but we saw many people being allowed in wearing things that were clearly prohibited. I ordered a strawberry aperol spritz which was delicious and refreshing. The complimentary garlic bread that they bring out is buttery and crunchy. It didn't last very long! I got the red beans and rice and mixed chicken. The red beans and rice were delicious and some of the best I've had that weren't cooked at home. The fried chicken is heavenly. So, so crunchy on the outside and super juicy on the inside. Their menu online said it came with a side but needs to be updated to show no side. We ordered some baked macaroni and cheese that rivals most that I've eaten. I also got the lavender lemonade which wasn't my favorite. Service at the beginning of the meal was great our food came out quickly but it took us over 30 minutes after we finished eating to flag down our waiter to get the check. The staff was nice except our waitress who took our order when we first sat down but totally ignored us and we didn't get our food for about an hour. I have been wanting to come here and couldn't wait until I was back in New Orleans to get my reservation. We went for lunch and it didn't disappoint. What can I say, I got to eat magnificent food at a place where greatness has dined previous to me. I couldn't get a reservation, so I got there 15 min before they opened and waited. There were a few folks before us and the line behind us formed shortly after. This place is on my bucket list so I made sure to go before our flight home that same day. We had beautiful service. The food was delicious. We enjoyed the red beans and rice with fried chicken, seafood platter, and mustard greens. All were deliciously prepared. Dooky Chase's has been on my bucket list for a long time and today I was able to finally check it off. I dined with a group of twenty celebrating a graduate. We arrived just as they opened and were seated right away. Once seated, we were greeted by the owners( a lovey touch) and then the servers. It took a little minute for them to take our drink and food order. It also took a while for them to prepare our food. I understand that it was twenty of us but it took about an hour and were the first customers of the day. Once the food came, it was delicious! I had the fried chicken, greens and macaroni & cheese. The chicken was fresh, crispy and flavorful. I don't usually eat greens but these were pretty good, I finished them the Mac was amazingly cheesy but was slightly cold. I was unable to get a reservation so that's why we arrived so early. Thankfully, we were able to be seated. We were traveling for work and needed separate checks per our employers requirement. The waitress was super annoyed and said if it got busy, she wouldn't be able to do it. Our drinks were only refilled once... despite my tea glass being empty before the entree arrived. The gumbo was good - a little soupier and lighter than most New Orleans gumbo. I ordered the red beans and rice, and that came with two pieces of fried chicken. Both dishes were bland and had no flavor. The chicken was overcooked and extremely bland as well. I have no idea what kind of awards they've won with that chicken.... Gordon Ramsey would be disappointed. Three of us got our food at the same time, the fourth person got his food as our desserts were being placed on the table. The peach cobbler was also overdone and burnt on the top. Not sure I'll come back.... There were too many issues and there are too many good restaurants in NOLA to have to compromise. read more
