We dined at Dooky Chase for dinner one evening, arriving two hours before closing. Reservations were required, and our party of seven, including one person in a wheelchair, was accommodated. There were ramps inside and outside for the wheelchair. We knew about the dress code beforehand and dressed accordingly. We only waited five minutes before being seated. The parking lot is next to the building; it's small, but we found a spot. It took us a month and a half to get a reservation, so we were excited but ultimately disappointed. The restaurant's atmosphere was beautiful--very classy and elegant. The service was sometimes slow; it took a moment to order and receive our food. When it arrived, it was cold and not fresh. The Mamere's crab soup had very little crab, as shown in the pictures. The fried catfish was cooked in old grease, as was all the fried food we ordered, including the seafood platter, crab cakes, and oysters. The crab cakes seemed old in general. The person in my party who ordered the gumbo said it was okay but nothing special. The Louisiana redfish was tough--possibly overcooked--and served cold. The crawfish étouffée was also cold and lacking flavor. The French fries appeared freshly fried; however, the macaroni and cheese was cold and seemed old. The candied yams were the best side: they were cold but tasted like they were freshly made. For dessert, we asked which items were made in-house or bought. We were told the praline bread pudding and peach cobbler were made in-house. The praline bread pudding was hot and seemed fresh; one person in my party said it was good. Although service was sometimes slow, our waitress was knowledgeable and attentive. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to a friend, mainly because we traveled to New Orleans solely for this visit, and it wasn't worth it. The food, in my opinion, wasn't good and didn't justify the wait for the reservation. I left disappointed, and we didn't take any leftovers to go because the food was old and cold. I absolutely love Norma's on Minnesota Avenue. It's one of my favorite breakfast spots, and I find myself stopping by about every other week. It's a mom-and-pop, carryout-only restaurant that serves traditional soul food. I've only had their breakfast so far, but it's been consistently excellent. My go-to is the fried fish breakfast, and it's amazing every single time. I haven't made my way through the lunch menu yet--the steak and cheese, chicken wings, and other options are definitely on my list to try. The food is always fresh, flavorful, and consistently good. I've never had a bad meal here, and the owners are always friendly, which makes the experience even better. The only downside is the wait. This is definitely a place where you should order ahead. Even when you do, there's a good chance you'll still have to wait a little while after you arrive. That can be frustrating if you're in a hurry, but it's something I've come to expect, and honestly, it doesn't stop me from coming back. I just factor the extra time into my plans because I know the food is worth it. If you're looking for a great breakfast spot with homemade, soul food-style cooking, I highly recommend giving Norma's a try. Being Creole myself I was absolutely excited to visit this historic New Orleans mainstay. Please note that reservations are highly recommended. The day I visited the restaurant was Reservation Only!! Luckily for us we had the required reservation and were promptly seated after arriving. Our server Caitlin was absolutely great. She was kind and attentive. She provided clear and detailed recommendations based on our questions and requests. She had the perfect balance between service and allowing us time to enjoy ourselves. She definitely contributed to the overall experience. The cocktails were delicious and very well mixed. Shoutout to the bartender for sure!! Food was pretty good with highs and some lows. A few highs included the Crab Cake app, BBQ Shrimp(Creole Style) savory not sweet and the Macaroni and Cheese. The entrées we had were delicious but as I mentioned Im Creole and cook this type of food on the regular and expected an EXCEPTIONAL food experience. The vibe was great and I enjoyed looking at all the art and photos hanging on the walls on the way to the host stand. We were seated at a two person table near the entrance and ordered some items to share. The seafood gumbo was sadly more watery than I usually like it, and the shrimp was pretty overcooked, but the meatball/sausage was delicious and the flavor was great. Pains me to give 2 stars. I made a reservation a month ahead of time because that's what you have to do if you want to come for dinner. They only serve dinner on weekends. Get lots of texts from resy.com saying I will be charged a fee for no show. Has to be canceled 24 hrs in advance. No problem. Got an uber over here with 10 minutes to spare. Our reservation was for 730. I believe we got a table at 815ish. Best service was at the bar while we are waiting to be seated. Of course the whole time Im getting text about this no show fee even tho we checked in when we arrived. Great pics of past guests etc. History. That's why we came. After we got a table we sat for 20 minutes without seeing a waitress. And yes we stopped 2 folks for service. No someone will be with you. It was I will tell someone. Wow o wow did I LOVE this place! We came into town for a food tour and this was one of the best places we tried. We shared our food family style so we were able to try more things and it was so good. Our server Haley (sp) was so sweet and everyone we interacted with was so nice. I would 100% go back and get the gumbo, creole shrimp and creole chicken. End the meal with peach cobbler and ice cream and you've got a 11/10 meal right there. The owner even came out to check on us at the end. This place is a must visit as the foods were honestly exceptional & it is a civil rights landmark. If you watched the Disney movie "the princess and the frog", one of the owners inspired the movie. They don't take reservations for dinner & we were so lucky we were able to get a 8pm slot! We waited at the waiting room bar area next door until they notified us. The bar area was very laid back and loved the abita beers (that amber lager was so delicious and smooth!). We were very hungry so we ordered many to share: 1) gumbo, 2) side of baked mac and cheese, 3) side of string beans , 4) fried chicken plate, 5) redfish, 6) shrimp clemencea, 7) peach cobbler w ice cream. Dooky Chase is a New Orleans institution, so it honestly pains me to write such a negative review. I really wanted this meal to live up to its legendary reputation, but unfortunately it was a major disappointment. Our table ordered the gumbo, seafood platter, pork chop, veal, and chicken Creole. The clear standout was the pork chop--it was absolutely delicious and easily the best dish we had. The seafood platter, however, was a letdown. The shrimp had a metallic taste, the stuffed crab tasted old and contained very little actual crab, the oysters were fried perfectly, but the fish was underwhelming and not fried properly. Nearly everything on the platter was excessively salty--to the point that it almost burned the roof of your mouth. The chicken Creole looked great when it arrived, but the flavor didn't match the presentation. It was incredibly bland and lacked the rich seasoning you'd expect from a classic New Orleans dish. The okra tasted undercooked, and the chicken itself felt unfinished, almost as if it hadn't been fully cooked or the recipe was missing key ingredients. The veal was just average. The breading wasn't adhering to the meat, and like several other dishes, it was far too salty. The gumbo reminded me of a Zatarain's gumbo mix rather than a homemade New Orleans gumbo. It had the taste of a boxed roux, and the meat seemed like it had been sitting in a pot for days. It tasted old rather than fresh. Even the drinks were surprisingly small, especially by New Orleans standards. The service was equally disappointing. We waited nearly 45 minutes before our waiter took our order. We had to ask multiple times for bread, and it was never replenished. After bringing the check, it took another 30 minutes for someone to come back and collect it. What makes this review difficult to write is that everyone we encountered was genuinely kind and welcoming. The staff's friendliness was never the issue. Unfortunately, great hospitality also requires attentive service and quality food, and both fell well below expectations. I gave Dooky Chase two stars because of its historic importance to New Orleans and the respect I have for what it has meant to the city's culinary legacy. That's exactly why this experience was so disappointing. I expected the level of excellence the restaurant is known for, but it simply wasn't reflected in either the food or the service. I guess nobody thinks to try then they are usually booked up. The inside is beautiful with interesting art pretty much from floor to ceiling. Started with a creole gumbo turned out to be a perfect way to start the meal had a very rich delicious base. For my main I got the red beans with fried chicken, cause you have to. Couldn't have been tastier no notes. Perfect red beans and the fried chicken was so crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Also, got a couple cocktails. Wow! I've been living here for 13 years and this was my first time going to Dooky Chase and it makes me sad that I've wasted all this time. I managed to score a lunch reservation about 2 weeks before we went so make sure to plan in advance. As most people, I've learned about Leah Chase and the restaurant through many cooking shows, but the history and the pavers listing many of the notable people who have been to the restaurant is something to be admired. It was a bit hectic when we first arrived and it took a while to get seated. The hostess stand had a sign detailing their dress code, but we saw many people being allowed in wearing things that were clearly prohibited. I ordered a strawberry aperol spritz which was delicious and refreshing. The complimentary garlic bread that they bring out is buttery and crunchy. It didn't last very long! I got the red beans and rice and mixed chicken. The red beans and rice were delicious and some of the best I've had that weren't cooked at home. The fried chicken is heavenly. So, so crunchy on the outside and super juicy on the inside. Their menu online said it came with a side but needs to be updated to show no side. We ordered some baked macaroni and cheese that rivals most that I've eaten. I also got the lavender lemonade which wasn't my favorite. Service at the beginning of the meal was great our food came out quickly but it took us over 30 minutes after we finished eating to flag down our waiter to get the check. What can I say, I got to eat magnificent food at a place where greatness has dined previous to me. I couldn't get a reservation, so I got there 15 min before they opened and waited. There were a few folks before us and the line behind us formed shortly after. This place is on my bucket list so I made sure to go before our flight home that same day. We had beautiful service. The food was delicious. We enjoyed the red beans and rice with fried chicken, seafood platter, and mustard greens. All were deliciously prepared. The waitress was super annoyed and said if it got busy, she wouldn't be able to do it. Our drinks were only refilled once... despite my tea glass being empty before the entree arrived. The gumbo was good - a little soupier and lighter than most New Orleans gumbo. I ordered the red beans and rice, and that came with two pieces of fried chicken. Both dishes were bland and had no flavor. The chicken was overcooked and extremely bland as well. I have no idea what kind of awards they've won with that chicken.... Gordon Ramsey would be disappointed. Three of us got our food at the same time, the fourth person got his food as our desserts were being placed on the table. We arrived just as they opened and were seated right away. Once seated, we were greeted by the owners( a lovey touch) and then the servers. It took a little minute for them to take our drink and food order. It also took a while for them to prepare our food. I understand that it was twenty of us but it took about an hour and were the first customers of the day. Once the food came, it was delicious! I had the fried chicken, greens and macaroni & cheese. The chicken was fresh, crispy and flavorful. I don't usually eat greens but these were pretty good, I finished them the Mac was amazingly cheesy but was slightly cold. I've seen Dooky Chase on TV several times, and I said I gotta hit this place the next time I'm in Crescent City. I started off w/ the beet salad, and ended with the fried chicken meal (all dark meat). The salad was a big portion, and had two kinds of beets. The dressing was nice & tart, and contrasted nicely vs the sugary beets. This was my best meal in MS or N'Awlins. The fried chicken was moist & tender, and the batter was seasoned to perfection. Dare I say, it was the best fried chicken I have ever had. Kailynn (?) was an awesome bartender/waitress. She was super nice, worked her ass off, and made sure I had everything I needed. The hostess Maya was also super cool, and sat me at the bar bc the main dining room was full. Regarding the ambiance, its like someone's house. DC's has been an institution since 1941, and was a regular meeting place for Civil Rights activists. I've had better food in NOLA. But the history and vibes inside are unmatched. You can feel the story when you walk through the dining room. The fried chicken was just average to me. Sure it got better dipping it in hot sauce. Good crunch to the batter. Mac n cheese is a thicker cheese. So it does feel a little heavy. Greens might have been the best thing I had. Gumbo was very good. Thinner broth but very flavorful. Good friendly service from the young man behind the bar. read more

A beautiful experience steeped in history. I was a bit worried reading recent reviews but we didn't have to wait long with our reservation. The fried chicken was juicy, the stuffed shrimp was STUFFED, and the okra and sweet potatoes were delicious sides. The service was great.
