We first came to Spicy Mango in May, and it was our first visit. Considering I've been to New Orleans four times this year alone, I can honestly say that DC (bartender) we met during that trip, is the reason we came back again this past week. From the moment we walked in, she was incredibly welcoming. She struck the perfect balance of being friendly and engaging without ever being overbearing. Even though she was a newer bartender at the time, she was knowledgeable about the menu, answered all of our questions and had such an upbeat, genuine vibe! She's easily the most welcoming bartender we'd encountered in New Orleans and that's the damn truth. We tipped her extremely generously both visits because that type of hospitality deserves it. On our first trip, we had the coconut shrimp and ceviche which were crisp, fresh, and beautifully presented. This time we were already full, so we didn't even order food. We literally stopped in because we wanted to see our fav bartender in Nola. I wasn't even planning on having a cocktail, but when we saw DC working the outdoor bar, we wanted to be served by her because her energy is literally that contagious. Even though we were seated at the indoor bar she immediately said she'd see if she could go out of her way to take care of us there. That level of hospitality and willingness to accommodate guests says a lot..... As a bartender myself, I know firsthand how insane this job can be, which makes me appreciate her even more. She genuinely makes people feel welcome. I asked her to create me a gin-based mocktail-style cocktail, and she nailed it. My boyfriend ordered the Flaming Margarita, which was fantastic as well. The ambiance is a 10/10. We even chose to sit outside at the bar in crazy heat because we genuinely enjoy being around DC's positive energy. Spicy Mango has officially become a must for us every single time we fly from New York, whether we're stopping in for food or just drinks. My best friend, Jourdan, and I decided to try Spicy Mango while we were in New Orleans, and I am so glad we did! There is only street parking, but we didn't have any trouble finding a spot. They had two lines when we arrived, one for reservations and one for walk-ins. We didn't have reservations and only waited about 5 to 8 minutes, even though the restaurant was packed. We ended up sitting at the bar, which was perfect. The ambiance was incredible. It honestly felt like we had been transported somewhere else. If you didn't look outside, you wouldn't even think you were in New Orleans! We started with the Joshi Bread ($12), which came with a honey guava butter. It was served warm, soft, and was absolutely delicious. We also wanted to try the crawfish fritters, but they were sold out, which tells me they must be a customer favorite. We ordered the Coconut Gulf Shrimp ($20), and they did not disappoint. There were about six large shrimp that were perfectly crispy, flavorful, and cooked just right. For our sides, we had the plantains ($7), the yuca fries ($12) with the dipping sauce, and the braised cabbage ($9). Every single side was packed with flavor. That braised cabbage especially deserves more attention! To drink, I had the West Indies French 75, which was refreshing and delicious. Jourdan ordered the Bujwah, and it was topped with edible flowers. It was almost too pretty to drink! Our total came to around $160, and every dollar felt well spent. Even with how busy they were, the service was attentive, the bathroom was spotless, and the overall experience was fantastic. The ambiance was everything and more!! The service was ok, which is one of the reasons I'm giving it 3 stars. We asked for napkins 3-4 times and never received them unfortunately, outside of that the waiter was nice. After wanting one thing on the menu, we were told that they did not have it and it was substituted with something else since they are still testing everything out. The food is also why I gave it 3 stars. The wings were my appetizer and they were lukewarm as if they were just sitting there. They weren't freshly made at all. The drink was nonalcoholic and it was GREAT !!! The jerk Mac n Cheese was also lukewarm as if someone else ordered it and they no longer wanted it then gave it to us. I was super stoked to try this Caribbean style restaurant with a Nola flare during my visit to New Orleans last weekend. I'm an aesthetic queen and loved everything about the beachy decor low lighting and decor extended to the restaurants. Reservations strongly recommended. It wasn't busy at all throughout our early dinner, and we still had to sit at the bar which i thought was silly. Our food did arrive quick and it was great but I was very disappointed about the amount of gnats flies hoovering around my food at the bar. The bartender saw us swatting and eventually brought over these little fans that did not help at all. The A/C vent was leaking as well on my sister at the bar and we had to move down to avoid that mess. Branzino 4/5 Presentation on taste and portion size was perfect definitely sharable. Hated all the bones. I order branzino regularly and typically do not have bones like that. Jerk Chicken 4/5. The jerk is hot in spice like breathing like a dragon hot but it is really good and has a nice char flavor you don't need sauce for it. I ordered half chicken and had plenty to share. Plantains were perfect, not mushy, firm and delish. I added cojita cheese for an upcharge. The cabbage was seasoned down and definitely recommended side. I wasn't a fan of the jerk mac but my sis loved it. It was a little dry and the jerk pieces were as well. The bartender whipped up a tequila espresso martini Don Julio style and it was decent. I had really high hopes for Spicy Mango based on all of the reviews! Here's what Spicy Mango gets right: 1) Ambiance! Such a cute spot for date night or friends. We sat on the outdoor patio and it was stunning. We loved the vibes, spacing, and greenery! 2) Service. We felt welcomed from the moment we stepped into the door. We felt valued and seen. We arrived a little early for our reservation and they accommodated us anyway. Service is big for me, especially in times when I feel so many places are lacking in this area. Alex also took great care of us. He was attentive and explained the dishes well. He was fun and personable. Thanks for being great, Alex! 3) The Oxtails! Chef's kiss! Absolutely delicious, and if we were to return, we'd get that dish again. This was our favorite thing that we tried. The branzino was also pretty good. Here's where I'd give this less than 5 stars. 1) Our food (particularly the oxtail) didn't come out hot. We're usually not one to send back a dish, but we did in this case given the price point. They did correct this however, and the dish came back hot and tasty. 2) A few items listed on the menu were unavailable. I hate when this happens. It's a pretty rare occurrence, but when you're traveling in from out of town, this is a bit disappointing. 3) Pricing for some items felt a bit steep for what we got. We left spending a pretty penny but not necessarily feeling it was worth it. Other reviews: We ordered shrimp ceviche as an app which was good though a bit quite spicy for my palate and smaller than I expected for the price. We had also initially ordered some cabbage to go with the entrees, but when we learned the cabbage was spicier, we cancelled the order. When I am the only, or nearly the only, person who looks like me in a place, I know I'm in the right place. This is a hopping place. They had several reservations open earlier in the night, but we had a show beforehand and didn't know what time it would get out . . . so we kept putting it off until there were no more reservations. We arrived probably around 9:30-ish. They stay open til midnight on the weekends (10 PM weeknights, closed Tuesday). There was a pretty good line in front of us, maybe 15 people, and an efficient doorman was keeping everyone organized. We got lucky because we were a party of two and could sit at the bar, so we were in within minutes. The staff here mean business and keep things running smoothly. The bar is beautiful. The whole restaurant is beautiful. And they have a gorgeous outside portion with a separate bar. Would love to eat out there sometime. This is a Caribbean Creole fusion restaurant, using jerk and Creole spices and tropical fruits. I had an oxtail dish served with hearty, spicy beans. All oxtail is on the bone, but this was so tender it came right now. So many complex flavors. It was delish. Unfortunately due to the low lighting (ambiance after all), the photo of my dish didn't turn out. My husband had the jerk chicken sandwich and thought it was outstanding. He can't wait to go back again. For sides/apps to share, we had their riff on elote and the ooey gooey jerk mac n cheese. There was nothing that fell short of scrumptious. Or in a better and more modern term, bussin. They also have paella, island curry chicken, Branzino, jerk chicken, scoveitch (marinated whole fried snapper--and they mean whole, I saw this thing come out to some tables and it's a fish on a plate, albeit beautifully presented). I think the menu changes from time to time because the online menu doesn't have everything we had on it. I think if I could get those juicy, tender, tantalizing oxtail and jerk dishes out of my head, I would love to try the street fruit salad. Mango, pineapple, radish microgreens, seasonal mango. Chamoy sauce. Salty, sweet, sour, spiced. I bet it would explode on my tastebuds. Drinks were fantastic. I'm sure their drink menus change as well, but I've included photos of what they had available during our visit. We had the Caribbean cough syrup (whiskey, ginger, honey, lemon) and the bujwah (rum, passionfruit liqeuer, lime, simple syrup, and coconut ginger beer. I asked the bartender for a good to-go drink and he made me the West Indies French 75, made with d'usse (cognac partially owned by Jay Z), simple syrup, lemon juice, Caribbean bitters, and sparkling sauvignon blanc. Bubbly, rich, fruity. It was the perfect refresher for the walk back to our hotel. Just like the food, all the drinks have a Caribbean/spicy/tropical lean. Service was absolutely brilliant. He was a dapper, talented, professional bartender who made great suggestions and even better drinks. Of note, when we were at the Elysian Bar (reviewed separately) and the bartender there said Spicy Mango is on his list to visit because all of his colleagues have raved about their excellent cocktail program. Also of note, this place is NOT cheap. After the appropriate tip (the man deserved an above average tip), our bill was 347 bucks. But you pay for the quality. We were staying at an airbnb near this place and wish we had spent more time here! Every night we walked back from the French Quarter, this place was packed with a line down the street. Lots of great music coming from the enclosed garden area outside too. Unfortunately, we never got to experience that scene, maybe next time. We stopped in before dinner and loved the interior with the lights, faux tree at the entry, and beautiful bar. We had drinks at the outdoor patio bar and were astounded by the craft cocktails our bartender produced. Typically when I'm in New Orleans, I always make it a point to visit Morrow's, but they're closed for construction, so I decided to visit spicy mango, which is owned by the same owner. The food here is a fusion of creole and Caribbean, which works really well together. The ambience is super aesthetic and they have a nice patio in the back as well. We tried the corn ribs and the habanero mango wings as the appetizer in both were really delicious and the wings weren't too spicy. We all enjoyed our entrées as well, and I really enjoyed their version of the French 75 cocktail. My friend Tried their capahirina cocktail and told them she didn't want it too sweet, but when she got it, she found it was a little on the sweet side and asked to take it back. They almost didn't take it off the bill, maybe they've had issues with people trying to eat and drink things and not take it off the bill? But once the manager came over and saw my friend clearly didn't drink more than a sip, they took it off, which we appreciated. I guess the point is, don't eat a much of your food and decide you don't like it halfway through because they definitely don't play that. I guess it's also important to note that this was one of the pricey meals we had in NOLA. Lastly , our server was super sweet and accommodating. First off I recommend making reservations if you can . It didn't take long to be seated and while it wasn't crowded, the people were coming! Enjoyed the over vibe of the restaurant. The inside is very intimate, not a lot of bright light. Loved the faux mango tree in the middle of the restaurant. Braised oxtails 8.5/10: a little salty, good portion and flavor. Seasoned well and meaty. Serve with rice included not on the side. For the price would like it to come with more than just rice. Oxtail Mac and cheese 9/10: Mac was nice and creamy and plenty of oxtail. It is considered a side so a little expensive but was filling. Had red and yellow peppers which complimented the dish well. Cabbage 9/10: very well seasoned left the jerk kit. Nice portion size for a regular side. I wasn't expecting the carrots, but they did complement the cabbage very well. It wasn't overly juicy and just the right consistency. The cabbage wasn't mushy or anything. Plantins 8/10: these were also a nice portion size for a regular side. Nice spot to go to celebrate. A little pricey but the food was good. Our young son came with us but I wouldn't recommend bringing kids younger than 12 just because the menu isn't necessarily kid friendly. We had drinks, the curry, the Mac and cheese and grilled fish. The star rating is more for the price than the experience and food. Nice staff and atmosphere. Definitely recommend to at least try once. After 15+ years of regularly coming to New Orleans, this is one of our favorite new discoveries. Spicy Mango feels like a perfect addition to the city. It's got that Tulum/Miami energy--airy, coastal, music going, and the whole place feels like it's building into a night out. The food is classic Jamaican, just in a more elevated setting--and it really delivers. Think braised oxtail, stewed curry chicken, jerk chicken, escoveitch (whole fish), dirty rice... all super flavorful. And the spicy stewed cabbage was honestly one of the best I've had anywhere. It definitely leans cocktail-forward--they're pushing the mango margaritas. A little sweet for me personally, but the flaming presentation is a whole moment. I did appreciate that they also had a good dry Riesling on the list, which actually pairs really well with the spice. I absolutely love Sun Chong, so I wanted to try another one of Larry Morrow's restaurants. I've heard great things about Spicy Mango, so Valentine's Day felt like the perfect time to check it out. When we pulled up, it was freezing outside. My date dropped me off at the door, and I noticed two people waiting outside with security. I stood behind them, assuming they were waiting because the restaurant was full. A couple minutes later, security let the couple in ahead of me and asked if I had a reservation. I told him yes. He went inside to confirm, came back out, and then let me in. What stood out is that once I got inside, there was no one standing at the hostess area. On such a cold night, allowing someone with a reservation to step inside while they wait does not seem unreasonable. Maybe this is just their standard process, but standing outside in heels and a dress in that weather was not ideal. Now let's talk ambiance. The vibe is beautiful. It definitely gives Caribbean energy and feels like you're somewhere far from New Orleans. There's a huge string sign in the dining room that says "The Tone," which I really liked. The aesthetic is strong. However, it is extremely dark. I could not see the menu without using my phone flashlight. The music was also very loud, to the point where I could barely have a conversation with my date. Romantic in theory, but if you can't hear each other, it becomes more nightclub than dinner. The restroom situation was interesting. The waitress had to show me where it was because it's far. You actually have to walk outside across uneven brick pavement to get there. In heels. In freezing weather. I was just relieved that the bathroom itself was clean, but that walk is not pleasant. As for the food, this is where things went downhill for me. We ordered an appetizer that was described as charred elote. What we received tasted less "charred" and more completely burnt. Now, if that's intentional and part of the style, then maybe it just isn't my preference. But it tasted overwhelmingly burnt rather than flavorful. For our entrée, we ordered a steak dish that arrived literally on fire at the table. Visually, it was dramatic and exciting. Unfortunately, once the flame went out and we tasted it, it also had that same heavy burnt flavor. It was hard to enjoy. We ended up eating the cabbage and rice sides together as our main meal because those were actually good. I'll be honest. If that deep char is authentic Caribbean style, then maybe Caribbean cuisine just isn't for me. But for my personal taste, both the appetizer and steak were too burnt to enjoy. Overall, the aesthetic is strong, the vibe is unique, and the restaurant definitely has presence. But between the security process, the extreme darkness, the loud music, the long bathroom walk, and the burnt flavors, I left disappointed. I wanted to love it. I really did. Lessons learned here because as the weather gets hotter, I'd like to dine inside so a reservation in a must. The food service is always timely and pleasant. The ceviche, Jerk chicken mac and cheese and Flaming Branzino are my go to dishes. Recently there was an increase in parking fee near the restaurant. I don't mind spending money but $45 for 2 hours was a bit shocking especially since I met a friend there who rode separate and paid the same amount. So be prepared to spend on parking and on the restaurant. The restaurant is worth it though. I typically get upset at Caribbean restaurants in the city who just don't understand flavors beyond NOLA flavors but this place has mastered that. read more

My mom begged me to go back and I am glad I did!!! I'm not sure if they read my previous review but THIS time everything was delicious! Elote was fresh and packed with flavor Lamb chops were cooked to perfection with a bit of heat on the back end. Oxtail Mac and cheese did not disappoint I tried the oxtail and grits AGAIN...Grits were smooth, with some thickness to stand up to the jam packed flavors of the oxtail and gravy and everything was fresh and hot. It was hard to find parking went around 3 times before finding street parking. After parked it was easy walk to the restaurant. Restaurant is really nice. There is limited waiting area inside so either come back or wait outside. Make a reservation cause its busy. Food was great. Some things were just sweet that im like everything doesn't need to have a sweet taste. Apps: elote, joshi bread, mango haberno wings. Joshi bread and the wings were so good! Entrees: we shared oxtail with white rice, oxtail mac and cheese ( it had a touch of sweetness to it), whole jerk chicken, cabbage (that was much better than I thought it would be) Drinks were good. Went here during my birthday trip.. it's such a beautiful restaurant but the music is LOUD. It was our first time here and I wish they would have asked us if we preferred inside or outside seating, because we would have waited for the outside seating. Service is great.. however they don't acknowledge birthdays like a lot of other restaurants. And for water options we were asked if we wanted still or sparkling, and were charged $10 for still. We should have been made aware of the price. Food was delicious!! So flavorful! Our only issue was that even though it was tasty, the oxtails were a bit small, only come with two and were EXTREMELY TOUGH! Not fork tender AT ALL! If I could give this place more than 5 stars I would! Absolutely stunning restaurant with twinkling lights, palm trees, neon signs, and a fun tropical vibe. Our waitress was so extremely kind and funny and made our experience all the more fun! I got the RudeGal and they set it on FIRE adding to the theme and overall experience! This place is not all vibes, the drink was phenomenal-- spicy and very flavorful! My partner and I got the charred elote to share and it was delicious! It was creamy, cheesey, and had that smoky grilled flavor. For my main, I got the jerk mac and cheese and it was one of the best meals I've ever had. Absolute 10/10 for the food and ambiance. I visited this restaurant for a large party birthday dinner and it was amazing. This restaurant picked a theme and executed it perfectly. Made a reservation here for a Friday night during our visit. Everything was great from the moment we walked in. Keegan was a great server and made great recommendations. I had the oxtails with white rice, my wife had the flaming branzino. We shared the jerk chicken mac and cheese, and the plantains. Everything was phenomenal. The oxtails had a nice kick to them, and the branzino was delicious. We had to make a special trip back to our airbnb after eating here because we could not let our leftovers go to waste. Highly highly recommend. The only thing I would add is that I recommend to go later in the evening because it seems like get more lively as the night goes on. Not only is the food good but also you will be safe! I made a reservation for French Quarter Festival weekend around 11pm for me and my friend. We were followed by a guy that just would not leave us alone. Once we got to the restaurant Priest (security) was incredibly kind and got rid of him when he noticed how upset and uncomfortable we were and he made sure we were safe from the time we sat down until the time we got into our Lyft to depart! I will always be appreciative of that! Larry Morrow! You got a patron in me for life. The security alone is a key detail many restaurants are missing. The restaurant is incredibly beautiful and I wish I could've gotten more pictures to capture it from my POV. I ordered the strawberry lemon drop, the mango habanero wings w/ the oxtail Mac and cheese. Everything was good, I do recommend more sauce for the wings but other than that it was a quick bite to end the night. But see that oxtail Mac and cheese!! 10/10. We finally tried Spicy Mango during our latest visit to New Orleans, and all we could ask ourselves was why we waited so long. We had walked past this Caribbean Creole fusion spot on Frenchmen Street countless times, and now it is easily one of our favorite dining experiences in the city. From the moment we walked in, everything stood out. The atmosphere is vibrant and inviting, the location is perfect, and the service was attentive without being overbearing. Every detail felt thoughtfully done. We ordered the whole snapper and the Emerald Green Salad, and both were outstanding. The snapper was seasoned and cooked to perfection, flavorful and beautifully presented. The salad was incredibly refreshing, with a combination of flavors that made every bite exciting and perfectly balanced. This place exceeded expectations in every way. Beautiful restaurant! We came for lunch on a Sunday since they were open during the day for Bayou Classic weekend. It was four of us, and everyone enjoyed their meal. I started off at the bar while waiting for my party and had two drinks, the Bujaw and the Montserrat. I thoroughly enjoyed both; they were strong, well-made, and flavorful. The only drawback was how hot it was when I walked in. It felt like a heater may have been on, and since it was warm outside too, the temperature was uncomfortable at first. Once my entire party arrived, we were seated promptly, ordered more drinks, and then our entrées. We had the red beans with oxtails, the oxtail plate, and the lamb plate. We also ordered the jerk mac & cheese, cabbage, and bread. Everything came out quickly, was beautifully presented, and tasted delicious. I enjoyed my oxtails, though they could've been cooked a little longer to be more tender. The jerk mac & cheese had great flavor from the jerk sauce, but it could've been a bit cheesier and creamier. Overall, it was a good experience. Our server, Alex, was excellent, very patient, knowledgeable, and great at explaining the menu since it was our first time. I'll definitely be back and am already planning to bring other friends. It's perfect for girls' night or date night. Atmosphere was very nice, an elevated Caribbean vibe, service was great and the food was good. Our server was very attentive and suggested a few of her favorite bites and drinks. It was happy hour so there were two specialty drinks to choose from a strawberry spritz and a dusse lemonade. Unfortunately the dusse lemonade was sold out. Happy hour ended at 7, it was only 5:30 so it was kindle odd to be sold out of a drink so early. We ordered the coconut shrimp and crawfish fritters for apps. I love Caribbean food so I was excited to try Larry Morrows take on it. We ate inside and it was cute and felt like we escaped to a tropical get away. The bathroom was outside and next time, weather permitting, Id love to sit outside amongst the beautiful greenery. My server Alex O. was very helpful and gave great recommendations. We started with the coconut shrimp which was a good start. For the entree my friend and I shared the escovitch snapper, cabbage, rice and peas and yucca fries! I enjoyed everything but the snapper was not escovitch. It was great fried snapper but the vegetables weren't quite pickled and the sauce on the plate was good but not what I was expecting or wanting when I ordered escovitch. The food is so great ... make sure your belly is prepared to be fed WELL! This was my first time ... so I asked for recommendations. The waitress at the bar, where I sat, was extremely helpful. We started with the mango habanero wings. EXCELLENT - best combo of a little sweet with a hint of heat! We did shareable options - braised oxtails ( which comes with steamed Jasmine rice) , braised cabbage , plantains and rice & peas. EVERY ITEM WAS SIMPLY DELICIOUS!!! The braised oxtails - tender and that dark brown roux makes you want to drown in it - so damn tasty and seasoned well. The braised cabbage has a spicy kick to it - but still very tasty. You will NOT need any salt or pepper. Forgive my photos - at night the ambiance gives you a deeper Caribbean evening vibe. Nice for a second date or romantic evening with your special someone.
