A friend took us here for a late lunch and I must say I am very impressed with this place! The quality of fish and freshness is superb- I've eaten a lot of raw fish and let's say this is one of the freshest I've had! We had a slew of nigiri's and sashimis from the daily special menu but I would say my favorites were probably the waygu, king salmon, black snapper and toro. The restaurant itself is not huge with about a dozen tables and is located in a strip mall where you would not expect to find such a high caliber of food. The owner of the restaurant is also the chef I believe. He greeted us warmly when we entered and conversed with us throughout our dining experience. I would highly recommend and definitely plan to come back.

I recently came here for dinner. It's a small place with lots of charm. The food is good and fresh. We ordered several rolls, tempura and a collar. The tempura had a good variety and the batter was light and crispy. All the rolls were good. My only thing was that a lot of their rolls have shrimp. My mom is allergic to shrimp so it was hard finding several rolls that didn't have shrimp. We got a collar too. Everything was delicious. Because it's a small place, they only had one person taking orders, one person helping with bussing and then two staff in the kitchen. They are attentive but can be a little slow at times. I'll definitely be coming back.

This was my first time at Dakara sushi, the service and food was great! The staff was very friendly and very attentive. The food was very fresh, tasted amazing, and came out quickly. I would definitely recommend to anyone looking to get some Japanese food.

Very friendly little restaurant. I had the Mixed Sushi, 8 pcs Nigirli (tuna, yellowtail, salmon, albacore, shrimp, squid, octopus and egg) and 8pcs California roll. This came with miso soup, salad and rice. I enjoyed every bite, great California roll and yummy selection of dish. My wife and daughter had the Mixed Chicken Teriyaki & Mixed Tempura which came with miso soup, salad and rice. Teriyaki was very tasty and tempura had a perfect batter and the miso soup had great favor. The little place should be on your list to visit.

This is the cutest little neighborhood spot! We know this place has been around for a long time, but since moving here in July, we were excited to see it reopen and are happy to give them our business. I'd definitely say their dinner options are a step up from the usual takeout places nearby. I really enjoyed dining in--some items, like the tuna tostada, seem better suited for enjoying on-site rather than for takeout. The quality of the fish is excellent, and I appreciate that they keep the menu concise, which ensures freshness. Anything brought in extra is featured on the specials board, which is a nice touch. The staff was incredibly lovely, and we're really happy to have this gem in the neighborhood. I'd definitely recommend giving it a try!

We were a little worried when we walked in... their choice of specialty rolls is limited.. but what we got we really liked. All their fish was very fresh, and they way they serve they do not load you up with rice.. the let you taste the fish.. Good choice of beers..

The best sushi I have had in a very long time. We only ate nigiri and Chef Jason set us up with a great experience. We had blue fin toro, hamachi toro, uni, unagi, red snapper just to name a few. Will definitely be back. Thanks again Chef Jason! read more

Kevin, the owner and chef, was a delight. I highly recommend sitting at the sushi bar, he is very friendly and easy to talk to. Their fried rice roll on the appetizer menu was delicious and innovative. Definitely recommend this restaurant if your in the mood for sushi that's fresh and not drenched in frilly sauces. read more

This is a five star sushi joint relative to nearby choices and based on quality of fish and service. Before this Higos was the only feasible choice for the discerning eater. Sushi in the whittier area has for years been less than satisfying and evolved into a scene of low quality product slung out by sloppy drunken chefs all too eager to squirt in copious amounts of sriracha,mayo, sweet teriyaki sauce, and ponzu on every ill advised named roll possible. I have dreams of dakara shifting that momentum and educating whittierites how sushi should be respected and consumed. And hopefully they will be able to step it up with the interior in the coming months :) I hope they can keep it up and not crash and burn like too many other joints that start strong but just can't get out of their own way. read more

The food was pretty good. Expect small rolls and small portions. You can definitely get more for your buck at other places that are just as good or even better. It's a bit pricey for the amount of food they give. The menu is not much help when trying to order. It doesn't really have a description of what are in the rolls so you have to keep asking the waiter if you have any questions about what's inside them. Very friendly staff though. read more

Came here on a Sunday evening with my sons basketball team families and the following Thursday with a coworker. Love the sashimi, the crispy rice OMG, and everything else I've had the pleasure of having. Owners are very friendly, thank you Jason as always for your service and quality. The prices are fair and while others may be disappointed by the serving sizes I found it to be decent amounts of food. It's not all you can eat and it's not to roll me out of there American sized portions. Keep at it, the Whittier area is lucky to have Dakara! read more

Came because of the reviews and boy am I glad! The sushi was absolutely delicious! I had crispy rice with spicy tuna, halibut with crispy onions and a roll with spicy tuna, shrimp and avocado. The best authentic Japanese food around here! I pretty much had everything on the menu. I like ordering from their "specials" board. Their crispy rice with tuna is my favorite. The sushi price is not cheap, but you're paying for what you get- really good and fresh fish. Saori and Jason (the sushi chefs) are super friendly. This is a tiny little restaurant with very friendly people! I didn't even know it was there if it wasn't for the "Japanese food" sign on the plaza sign. They have great specials that they have written on the white board so check those out! When we went we had the seared albacore jalapeño, seared albacore with garlic sauce (these two were sashimi style), spicy tuna on fried rice, all of those were on the special sign, and finally a caterpillar roll. All of our rolls were so tasty!!! It was absolutely delicious and I'm so glad we found this place! The only thing was that the servings were pretty small, after we ordered and ate all that food, we were still hungry! That or we are just fat asses and wanted to eat more! My favorite was the albacore with jalapeño and the spicy tuna on fried rice. If you go, try those two! read more

I've lived in Whittier now for about 18 months and every new restaurant I try turns out to be really good! Dakara Sushi is no exception. The meals we tried out tonight we're top notch and so was the service (from both brothers Jason/owner and Master Chef, and Host Kevin)who were very friendly. We came here on a recommendation from our good friends and my girlfriend just loved her hot seafood soup and I loved Kevin's recommendation, the crispy fried spicy tuna,which was to die for. Whittier's newest hidden treasure. I almost don't want to rave as it isn't very busy (yet)! Fish is fresh. My hubby doesn't do sushi, but the teriaki plates are great and he is very satisfied. We waited quite a while, assuming it would be brought out, but no one ever checked in on our table. This seems to match other reviews mentioning a lack of staff awareness and attention to customers. The staff appeared to only come by to take orders and drop off checks. We were even seated near the register, yet no one noticed that an entire meal was missing. When it was time to pay, another employee helped us. We had to point out that the ramen never came and ask for it to be removed from the bill. His response was simply, "Sorry about that, let me take it off. Here's your total." There was no real sense of concern, apology, or effort to make the situation right. Mistakes happen, but the lack of communication and customer service is what made this experience so disappointing. Staff could benefit from additional customer service training and more awareness of their guests' needs. Unfortunately, after this experience, we will not be returning and would not recommend this restaurant to others.

DO *** NOT *** ORDER THE BEEF TERIYAKI!! It is the worst beef teriyaki I've ever had. It is a disgrace they are even serving that with the title and as a main course. Did I mention it was horrible and very depressing? It is a messy beef stew jerky taste like I was eating dog food. (just see the picture) It is so so so sad. Not worth the $14 price at all. I should have read Diane M's review... she was spot on about that beef teriyaki (she even wrote she tried to give it to her dog and he wouldn't eat it!) If the owners are reading this, you guys need to get real beef, please. It really is an abomination. Prices are rather high considering the cut sizes/portions. Just 5 pieces of tiny cuts of octopus was $9. I get bigger slices at Kula rotating sushi for $2 and taste is not that different. The only reason I tried this place was being in the area and being a little tight on time (I would have preferred to drive out more); I didn't do research and just walked in here just looking at the high Yelp score. This is definitely one of those places where the high score is deceiving coming from just the locals who haven't experienced anything outside this city. This is NOT a place to drive miles just to try. You WILL be disappointed. It is a small "hole-in-the-wall" place with small parking lot. Another big problem I noticed when I went was how they seem to have no real servers working. The chef and female helper took the orders, so service was rather slow even though it is not a packed place. The decor is really plain... ambiance is rather sad.. too much white walls. The owners are actually Japanese, which is a super rarity, and seem friendly, but that's about it. Definitely was not satisfied for the price at all. For $70 with tip, I could have had a really nice dinner elsewhere. I will not be coming back like others... I'm still traumatized from the beef teriyaki... did I mention how bad that was?! I think you can judge for yourself just by looking at the picture without tasting it. Amazing 'little' Japanese restaurant and I would say this is one of the best Japanese food in Whittier! I put a quote on 'little' because they do have a 2nd adjacent space but only used as waiting area. I guess they did not expand because they didn't want the quality to suffer. Talking about quality, we've visited numerous times and they never disappointed us! The dishes are tasty, special and amazingly affordable. Most of their dishes you don't see anywhere else. Maya Enomoto Family, I watched an NHK special on a renown neurosurgeon Tanikawa, Rokuya practicing in Sapporo Hokkaido. He helps everyone who comes to him, and has operated over 5000 extremely difficult surgeries with 0 relapse. He's known as The Last Samurai of the Far North. First of all, what a treat to have found this place in Whittier. It's hard to find good quality and tasty sushi in this area. The staff is super friendly and welcoming. Jason and his wife, who are both the chefs, are amazing at what they do and they definitely know how to treat all their customers.
