I understand that it can be overwhelming to help animals but if you have volunteers i feel like there should be protocols on how to handle people asking for help. I truly needed help, i had no where to look and i was literally begging DCL volunteers to please help me. I was up to deploy in a matter of days and i found a kitten i could just not keep. They ended up just saying we can't help instead of redirecting me anywhere else. It could have been as simple as "hey you can possibly check out xyz". But no, and when they ask for donations and help the whole community is there to help them but i feel like it's very one sided. After i came back to the US i ended up making it my goal to help as many people on Nextdoor since everyone is saying the same thing about DCL. These poor kitties and people really need just a helping hand to go somewhere instead of a kill shelter or to just make the feral community worse. Do better. read more

I originally thought Dallas Cat Lady was a great organization as my daughter adopted a kitten from them with zero issues. However my and my husband's experience (or lack thereof) has been very discouraging. Last December, we were wanting to adopt a kitten. Found a cute baby, somehow made contact with DCL and were told to fill out an application. We always adopt/rescue so there is no issue with our application. However, we NEVER received any response to our application. We went to A Voice for All Paws and easily set up a meet and greet with a group of sibling kittens and chose our sweet boy. Now we're wanting to adopt a baby sister for him and thought we had found a girl to adopt. There's no easy way to communicate with DCL. I had to send an email on Sunday evening and did not receive any response until Tuesday morning. Was told to fill out an application before we could even schedule a meet and greet. I couldn't even submit the application for the new kitten because my old application from December was still valid. Meanwhile, the girl we were hoping to meet and most likely welcome to our family has been adopted. I strongly discourage anyone attempting to adopt from DCL. I understand they are short-handed. HOWEVER, MAKE COMMUNICATIONS EASIER. Otherwise, don't get your hopes up if you see a baby you think would be a good match for your family. read more

Awesome group! Like the other rescues in Dallas they are overwhelmed all of the time. When will Dallas do their part like many other big cities. Unfortunately the brunt of the effort to get community and feral cats fixed us left to volunteers elbowing each other to try to get trapped kitties fixed and none of the clinics are in Dallas proper. Similar experience as others who've contacted them - I contacted them multiple times asking for help when a mom abandoned her month old kittens. They kept me hanging for WEEKS saying one of their volunteers would contact me. Again, WEEKS went by and nothing!!! When I complained all they could say is 'we're volunteers' and then proceeded to tell me they 'could only lend traps and teach others how to help'. Really?! After weeks of the back and forth that is the response?! PLEASE don't waste your time with them. I wasted valuable time, waited weeks while the kittens grew and now their chances of being adopted are slim. read more

A lot of people on here are unaware of how rescue works. No rescue is obligated to come by and pick up any stray cat that you may find. They can and do reach capacity especially during kitten season. In May 2020 I adopted a 10-month old semi-feral kitten through DCL. His foster mom, Maggie, is amazing (@father_thymes_fosters on Instagram) and was constantly giving me updates on him before adoption day and sending cute photos and videos. My cat has mild CH and Maggie had a phone conversation/interview with me to ensure I was aware and ready to take on the challenges that may come with that. I felt like she always had his best interest at heart. In terms of adoption day, I set up a meeting time at a local PetCo and was aware that I would need to provide my own supplies for transport, and for once he was home with me. Maggie was super sweet, timely, and health-conscious. This was all during the COVID-19 pandemic also. My not-so-little guy is amazing and I'm so thankful to Maggie and the Dallas Cat Lady organization for rescuing him and taking such good care of him prior to his adoption. I will state, I've never been to the DCL headquarters (if that exists?) or met the owner, but from my end, everything went smoothly and they hired a fantastic foster in Maggie! read more

Dallas Cat Lady and her fosters care about their cats and our experience is that the foster wanted to make sure we got the best kitten for our male cat. She asked many questions about our cat (his personality, habits, likes & dislikes, etc). We had our eye on a super cute guy but he was too timid and would have been bullied forever. The foster introduced us to another boy who looked similar but had a much stronger personality. It didn't take long for them to become best buddies! I've been looking for a 2nd cat for about a year. I went to Petco and met the Dallas Cat Lady. My spouse and I explained what kind of household we had with our two dogs and lonely cat. Our cat is a bottle baby and very unique so we needed his partner to be every bit as much. She quickly thought of a few potential cats for adoption that she had and we found the perfect one! We were very lucky to find a cat that had once been feral, was a bit quirky and enjoyed other cats and dogs. It's been about 1.5 months now and we absolutely love our new cat who is now part of the family. Stay FAR FAR away and please donate elsewhere. This organization has deplorable business practices. Our beloved cat DIED in their care. He was placed in a home with deplorable conditions. We were moving overseas and the adoption of our three beautiful cats had fallen through the night before we flew to the UK. Mojo was a glorious and healthy 3 yr old with a wonderful personality. He and our other two pets were placed with Linda Ashton in Richardson whose home reeked of urine from the front yard. We were never allowed inside. He was kept in inhumane and unsafe conditions - in absolute filth. After repeated requests Linda finally sent the photo below of our beloved Mojo. Notice the floor and the filth. Mojo soon became ill and died from a virus related to poor conditions. After Mojo died, Linda refused to let us have someone pick up and rescue our other two beloved cats unless we paid her $600.00. The cost she said she incurred for putting our beloved cat down. These cats were family pets of my two children who had to be told Mojo had died in her care and she was now holding their other two pets hostage. All this while we were overseas in the UK and unable to deal with this locally in DFW. First Linda Ashton then Anna from The Cat Lady began a smear campaign attacking me personally and trying to harm my business on social media. This was in retribution for me not turning over $600.00 for the death of our pet. Linda Ashton's behavior is consistent with someone who has mental problems. A restraining order can put a stop to the libel but my beautiful cats can never be replaced. Stay FAR FAR away. Never surrender a pet to this organization, never let them board a beloved pet or a rescue, and please never donate! The local veterinarians can attest to her reputation. Cats in DFW deserve much better care. We still do not know where our other two cats are, or if they survived their stay at Linda Ashton's house or have died from the same virus. Horrible experience, I was trying to adopt a cat and was asked if I ever had any pets. Already the lady was very hostile towards me. I said when I was a child my parents had dogs and a pot belly pig. She asked where was they kept. I said they kept them in our back yard and the she said " Well then you can't have a cat because you won't be able to take care of it" I said lady Ive been a nurse for the past 8 years and can take care 35 people at any given time, also a single father for the past 12 years. me and my family have been followers of this organization for the past two years and even adopted a cat from them that was at the lewisville location! however our issue based of their adopting policy they have changed recently. We didn't have any issues with Miss Debra on our first time adopting with Dallas Cat Lady's she was very informative and communicative, this was two years ago. But we saw the posts of kittens they were going to have at their weekly carrolton adoption event and was very interested in adopting a kitten. Once we showed up and looking at the kittens we were very excited to adopt one however the volunteers were asking us basic questions like our living situation and we had told them we live in a two bedroom two bath apartment and we have a cat that's an emotional support animal (also planning on getting this kitten register once it was of age) and the volunteer person told us we needed an pre approval letter from our leasing office or a call from them stating they were okay with us getting a cat due to their pet deposit and lease. This was very random response because we actually did not need to get that the first time we adopted with them and it was frustrating to here that. Also noticed another potential adopter wanting to get a kitten that the volunteer spoked to before us and they turned her away because she was 21 and their policy is 25+. (also a new policy) and told her to go down the street to the carrolton shelter to adopt. (Which what we ended up doing!!!) although I heavily understand not wanting the wrong person to adopt a cat just to mistreat it and put it an awful situation but these new policies of theirs aren't gonna help them out on getting these sweet babies into loving homes and this organization will be stuck with all these cats. If you want to adopt a cat, go to any of the adoption agencies. If you want to volunteer, stay far away from Dallas Cat Lady. This organization is a bunch of volunteers. They adopt cats out of local Petco Stores. The problem with this organization is that they are a bunch of sick animal hoarders. They don't care about the quality of life for animals or people. They want to turn normal people into cat hoarders. I volunteered for about a year. According to them, I could do nothing right. I did not do enough. I would get remarks like "I have fourteen cats, you can take one more." They adopt cats to people that should never have pets. They dump cats on your doorstep without even asking if you want to foster another cat. The cages at Petco are often in horrible conditions because they are not cleaned. If you want to volunteer, find a reputable rescue group. read more

I texted again, saying I'm sorry that they were obviously closed because I never received a response, and then all of a sudden I get a text back, say they are still in business and overwhelmed. Disreputable practices. Unethical practices. I am a strictly honest businessman and a good Christian. So ignore my warning at you own peril: do not do business with this organization. [UPDATE: My cat became sick after exposure to a trial adoption from Dallas Cat Lady. My veterinarian office said "Oh, everyone knows about her. She is awful." That's right - my veterinarian office.] 1. The very first rule in ethical animal placement is that the animal's welfare and happiness come first. It is NOT to "close the deal" and force customers to keep an animal who they observe to be in heartbreaking distress. In my observation, this organization places "closing the deal" first, and is combative to customers who believe the animal is unhappy and hostile. Their attitude in such combativeness is unethically to the detriment of the defenseless animal. 2. When your policy - your contractual obligation - says that you give a refund, you honor that policy, instead of cowardly hide and ignore attempts to contact you. It is disreputable; it is dishonest. I was compelled to spend hours of my time and forced to resort to rude persistence, embarrassment and expense just to chase down a measly $100 refund. The "funny" thing is, I would happily have done what I have routinely done - to just donate the funds out of charitable regard for an animal rescue organization. BUT NOT THIS ONE. Faced with flim-flam resistance and unanswered requests in my attempt to return a very unhappy and distressed cat, I was determined to make it a mission not to let them get away with a measly $100 scam victory. I was still made to suffer just to get that. There's more, too, but just do the smart thing and go elsewhere for cat adoption. One last note: this, like many animal rescue organizations, is dependent upon selfless, kind hearted volunteers. I have respect and empathy for those. My experience was also negative with Leigh Sessler, but I can't give a zero on here. I called to inquire if she could help me with adoption of a cat that showed up at my front door. This older cat was in very poor condition, with an infected ear and almost hairless, with a terrible chronic skin condition. I took the cat to the vet and had his ear treated, and was told to give antihistamines to help with the cat's smelly, awful skin condition. This cat was EXTREMELY difficult to pill. I've had cats all my life and I know all the tricks for pilling a difficult cat. I found someone willing to take it, but she had such a difficult time with it, she said she couldn't keep him any longer. At the time I was a single mom, with a 2-year-old and 2 other cats in a small home, and it was just too much for me to take on. When I finally connected with Leigh, she yelled at me over the phone and told me what a irresponsible pet owner I was. I am a VERY responsible pet owner. My 2 cats are indoor only, neutered, fed premium catfood, vaccinated, on flea/heartworm preventative, and taken to the vet if I have the slightest inclination that something is wrong. They are members of our family, and treated as such. She ultimately agreed to take the cat, but tried to make me feel guilty as Hell, when I suggested that the cat might be better off euthanized. Sometimes that really is the most caring and compassioniate thing you can do for an animal. In my opininion, she is too overwhelmed to run her business responsibly and provide the care needed to so many litters of kittens being fostered for her throughout the MetroPlex. read more

I've been a foster with dallas cat lady for a little over a year and what I really appreciate most is the level of care every volunteer has for every cat. These people absolutely adore the cats and realize how deep the need is for TNR, spay/neuter and adoption. They have a thorough adoption application and a fee for every cat/kitten so not just anybody can adopt. It guarantees the safety and well-being of our kitties. These ladies and gents have their own lives and schedules and they sacrifice so much of their time to volunteer to save cats in the dallas area. Even though most volunteers are very busy, I've never been ignored or even gotten too late of a reply to any question. If I have a sick kitty, they make sure to see him/her as quickly as possible and proper medication has never been in short supply. It can be a lot of work at times but it's very very rewarding to help save such a vulnerable (and adorable) species. read more

So I got the number and email that was provide under the information of the kitten and texted the person "in charge" of all the questions; I'm assuming. So I texted her in regards of the kitten and I didn't receive anything for an entire week till a week later I emailed and AGAIN texted the girl regarding the kitten and that was when she finally replied "she's been adopted." No "sorry for the inconvenience", "I'm so sorry I didn't reach back to you." Simply disgusting! Throughout the years, I have always adopted my cats through them because of the customer service, and of course the way foster their cats before giving them to the new owners. One of my cats was going to be put down because she was considered "violent" however dallas cat lady swooped in and rescued the cat. Nurtured her and socialized her into lap cat ;) They are also so sweet to answer my million questions, and help me get my cats acquainted to their new home, my dog and cats. During the summer of 2018, we adopted a bonded pair of 15-month-old cats from DCL. We had two more at home. They had shared a habitat at a Petco in north Dallas and were obviously quite attached to each other. We became aware of this pair as we were volunteer cage cleaners at the time (one visit weekly for about four months). During our participation as volunteers, we became aware of the level of care that the DCL folks provide to cats, from bottle feeding newborns to spay/neuter, chipping, and medical needs, to adoption. There are a number of volunteer fosters who temporarily house and socialize the cats. DCL folks are very committed to finding forever homes for the cats while being good stewards in the meantime. They are a nonprofit organization supported by donations. read more

This is a great organization! I have had many interactions with the volunteers, fosters, and director! When I found bottle baby kittens they taught me how to bottle feed, provided resources, and offered to take the kittens when they got sick. After this, they helped me adopt out the kittens! Every time I have asked this organization a cat related question I have gotten a clear, polite, and helpful answer! I genuinely feel like this organization is a huge resource to the North Texas community. They provide education on TNR, bottle feed kittens, and help the community when they find abandoned cats/kittens. You can tell that their volunteers really know their foster cats and want to ensure that each adoption is perfect! The people that volunteer with Dallas Cat Lady are kind, genuine, helpful, and caring. Recently went to an adoption event to look at cats up for adoption. I along with another family was there. The two adoption people were talking to the family and I began looking through the book of other adoptable cats. The one adoption lady was talking to the other family there and then took the book of adoptable cats out of my hands as I was looking at it. No acknowledgement and when I asked questions about their cats they were short with me and didn't give me the time of day. I adopted a cat through the Dallas cat lady and I would like to say that the people volunteering are extremely nice and helpful. I was advised not to purchase a pet carrier since the agency will provide a carrier in which I will have to use the following week for the second round of vaccinations with the agency at Petco. Before I could walk out of the store, the box unfolded and my cat was loose. A Petco employee caught her and informed me that one of the cat lady's volunteers assembled the box wrong. They fixed it, I left with my cat, and again was instructed to return two weeks later for my cat's last shot. Two Saturday's later, I put my cat in the box and while attempting to put her in the car my cat fell through. My cat has never been outside, she is very skittish and I've only had her for two weeks and she is now lost in the thunder, rain and lightning. I'm already attached to her and very sad to have lost her. I went back to Petco today to talk to the founder and executive director of the Dallas Cat Lady, letting her know that the pet carrier boxes that she provides and claims are safe for reoccurring use are completely unsafe and unstable. She immediately got defensive and screamed at me, stating that if I wanted my cat to be safe I should have purchased a real pet carrier and that no one at The Dallas Cat Lady was responsible. I let her know that her volunteers were adamant about not purchasing a $40-$70 pet carrier being that theirs work just as well. I just wanted to let her know that their practices and advice could cause other people to lose their cat the same way. She then replied that, with my attitude and negative thoughts, I would never get my cat back and began insulting me, saying that I had a funny face before telling me that I could just sue her and get her lawyer's number. This leads me to believe she is used to these kinds of confrontations and situations in her business practices. She was very aggressive and rude, asking me if I was just there to: and I quote, "bitch at her". She blamed me for her faulty devices and faulty advice while ignoring the safety of the pets as well as disregarding people's time, feelings and money. Please stay away from her practice at all costs. She does not seem to care about pet owners or animals possibly being lost in the middle of the streets if dropped from the unsafe carrier boxes. read more

Given the assumption only to be able to leave a voicemail at such hour; I was pleasantly surprised to be able to speak directly with the founder. Leigh was more than compassionate and was able to make arrangements to pick them up in efforts of providing them a home. I am honestly in shock that I was not able to adopt a kitten from a Petco in North Dallas. One of the ladies, Michelle, told me that she didn't think the kitten was a right fit for me because I work all day and no one would be home with him, that he may get depressed. That is honestly the most absurd thing I have ever heard. And not to mention I had to call 4 different people just to get one on the phone to discuss the kitten I was interested in. The poor kitten is probably depressed from being cooped up in that damn box they cage them in. I have never in my life had a cat get depressed simply because it was home alone during the day while I was at work and the kids were at school. I was extremely interested in the kitten they called "Chief" and played with it through the little wholes in the plastic window for 20 minutes. We have adopted two cats from this organization over the past year and a half. Our first one should of had a cone while recovering from her spay. She licked her wound open and we spent more money than I'd like trying to help her heal over the next month. I never contacted Dallas Cat Lady because I found it part of my duty to support their organization rather than ask for help with medical expenses. That kitty is so amazing! Smart, funny, playful and loves to talk and snuggle. We love her so much that we decided to adopt another female orange tabby that we saw once a week for a month at our local Petco. She is making a place for herself in our family and we love her so much. Of course this rescue organization is a big job with a lot of moving parts, not enough money or help. Things aren't going to be perfect. If you are concerned about the health of your new rescue then just go to your vet and take care of that baby. Leigh has met me for adoptions last minute and seemed grateful for our contribution. There is no reason to expect perfection from people doing the work that so many others choose not to do. 4 month old kitten I adopted had calicivirus and I had to put him down 2 months later. Was told this happens all the time when it doesn't and shouldn't! Be sure to ask if any of their kittens have any incurable and contagious diseases before you adopt from them. When I alerted them of the issue I was asked, what is it that you want? I've been involved with animal rescue for what feels like a lifetime. I've had the privilege for working with some amazing people. Which brings me to my involvement with Dallas Cat Lady. Since my first interaction with them, I have always said, "they walk the walk". These people are 110% committed to the animals and finding them the best possible homes. I have seen them run TO sick, hurt and abandoned animals that other groups might run from because of the cost or time to get them well. I see them give their all and more to house, feed, spay/neuter, adopt and whatever else is needed in the process. Are they overwhelmed and overworked at times...yes! They are volunteers with jobs, lives and sometimes their own personal emergencies, but they still try to make animal rescue the priority. They are inundated with people who just want them to "fix" the problem without any regard for the financial or resource limitations a non-profit rescue can have. For all those that are concerned about them taking on too much, come volunteer and help make things better! I have seen them do hundreds of adoptions and thoroughly love all the adopters who come back either in person, email, etc and share their joy with the adoption, the team and the love they have for their new family member...many of whom adopt another kitty! I am so disappointed. Yesterday I went to the Petco in Mesquite, after visiting the Animal Shelter in Mesquite, taking a look at kitties to adopt. I didn't fall in love with any cats at the shelter, but Judge Judy, at Petco really caught my attention. To even let the cats out of the cage, I had to contact Dallas Cat Lady as Petco is not given keys to the cages. Red flag number one. We set up a time for today: 10:00am. I was very excited to finally meet the sweet kitty I had seen the night before. At 9:35 I received a text asking to meet at 10:30 instead. Red flag number two. I brought my mom and a friend with me, and we got to Petco at 10:10 because I wanted to see the cats again without anyone there to sway our opinions. When we arrived, we noticed how sickly all of the cats seem to be. One of the cats was sneezing and coughing at least once a minute, if not more. Another had skin lesions. And two probably had ear mites. We watched one scratch her ear so vigorously that a scab fell to the bottom of the cage. I couldn't help but wonder why the scab was there in the first place. Because we already have two cats at home, we decided to not adopt a cat from there so that we didn't risk getting our kitties at home sick, but I wanted to wait to actually speak with someone about the health of the cats. After waiting for 35 minutes, at 10:45 we left Petco. I called the same number I had texted to schedule to meet to let "Leigh" know that we had been waiting for 35 minutes and she did not answer. I was pretty peeved that an organization that claims to be so concerned with finding abandoned cats a home would not only make it so difficult to simply meet a cat without it being behind a cage, but not have enough concern to take care of them when they're obviously plagued by different issues. How long has it been since someone in the organization had checked on the cats? All of them had litter all over their spaces, one's cage was even used as the storage for more cat food. Why was it necessary to take away even more space from the cat's already small confinement? Requiring less of the volunteers from the organization? Anyone who has ever had a cat for even a small amount of time knows that cats don't cough. It is obvious that the poor kitty was sick. Why were the people who are supposed to be taking care of these cats not doing all in their power to help them? At 11:05, I finally received a text from "Leigh" stating that a volunteer had FINALLY arrived at Petco. 35 minutes later than was scheduled, an hour later that what was originally scheduled. When I let her know how long I had been waiting she did not apologize, she simply said "Ok" How ridiculous. read more
