Mentally prepare yourself before going lol, not meant for people who get overwhelmed by busy spaces One downside is the prices, holy moly are things pricey there. $20 for a pair of cheap tights I can understand having quick access to things that may not be easily accessible otherwise, but I could not justify spending $250 on a pleather and lace skirt. My daughter wanted to come here because she was bored one day while driving around. I'd always seen the place, but never knew exactly what it was. Turns out its a pretty cool costume shop with something from probably every era or genre. I mean I saw everything from 20's gangster to batman. Since I was with my 14 year old, most of my time was force in the disco era, she thinks its fascinating and loves the colors. I too was amazed at the size of the selection of 70's clothing. While I don't see myself shopping here daily, I will say that I will never buy a Halloween outfit anywhere else but here. Why would I. Matter of a fact, I think I'm going to plan my outfits for this years Halloween parties starting in early September, just so I can identify and purchase what I want early. We didn't really see much on the employee side, I'm not sure how staffed they'd be prior to any big costume type event, but one person did manage to ask if I needed help. The place is not super large, and everything is kinda cramped together, so you'll want to give yourself some time to walk around and take it all in. If you can conceptualize the outfit, they can probably bring it to fruition. Rows and rows of shoes, a ceiling full of hats, glass cases full of accessories, racks and racks of costume attire. This place will make you want to dress out. I ventured in for a few accessories to complete my Great Gatsby party look and found exactly what I was looking for - a not-to-over-the-top-but-it-sort-of-is bedazzled headband with that signature 40's feather, long beads/pearls to tie, and super long gloves. I could have left with a full on flapper dress and more though as they surely had it all. The only downside is the return policy - it is pretty much none existent. So be sure you get what you like, and no more than you need. Great place though, helpful staff. Oh, I ended up spending $20 for the headband, $30 for the beaded necklace and $30 for the gloves I think. My total was $80 and I didn't get anything else...so pricey. read more

I came into this shop with super high hopes and those hopes were rewarded -- with obscene pricing and pretty visuals. I was here to pick up some medieval Renaissance clothing for a photoshoot I was conducting, I found beautiful dresses with prices upwards of $120. I am nearly convinced myself after trying to pieces on to purchase one of them only to send a picture of it to my friend who would be modeling it, that friend went ahead and sent me the literal exact dress off of Amazon for only $38. I'm more upset that a place priding itself on Vintage costumes is selling Amazon in Party City clothing at such a high price. I understand that resale has to have some additional value but to me, the value would be in picking it up in person rather than waiting for it to ship in. Even for that benefit I wouldn't pay a 50% increase. I'm very disappointed, just check Amazon first before purchasing. read more

Overpriced, but in such a niche market no one cares. The costumes range from made in China specials that are a slight step up from disposable costumes found in Walmart to true original vintage. Costumes normally start around $100+ head to toe and can easily cost $300-500 for an all out ensemble. The staff was nice enough and they have some cool options but honestly the sheer amount of inventory here is so massive and cluttered I easily confused this 'shop' with an elderly grandmothers closet (the smell was similar too). I really just went with a friend so she could buy a few more pieces for her outfit and I just wanted to browse an see what they had to offer. Instead I was pushed into buying several little items that were extremely over priced. They also have giant signs at the front desk in bold lettering saying "no returns, no cash back, all sales final" which normally isn't anything alarming but the whole set up of this business seemed shady and those signs came off more as a red flag then a simple business practice. read more

Visiting Plano from Los Angeles, I stopped in the Dallas Vintage Shop and had the worst mishap a traveler AND shopper can have--realized I lost my iPhone. It was either in the Uber I took over from the hotel or somewhere in the massive shop of vintage costume and clothing items! My review is directly to the owner, who graciously let me camp out and freak out and, eventually, recover my phone when the Uber driver returned a few hours later to the rescue and I drove off into the Texas sunset, promising them all I'd NEVER return again--for their sake. For mine, wish I had more time that day to enjoy the event, because it truly is a treasure trove of vintage goods. Coming from LA, I wished I could transplant the entire shop, including its owner and a couple of the staff, right here to me in Hollywood. You want a costume. Not something that looks cheap but something more authentic that will last a while and really show off some flair. You want to look dapper, scary, stunning, or just strange. Regardless, you just want to turn heads. Dallas Vintage will get you there...for a price. Dallas Vintage is probably one of the more expensive costume shops I've been to, but they make up for the price with their high quality and excellent selection. Steampunk, western, Victorian, and Ren Faire are their most popular choices, but they have more traditional costumes too. And you can find every accessory under the sun to go with them. If money is tight, you should still pay them a visit and use their selection to get ideas for your costume, then make it yourself. read more

INSANE price gouging considering that lots of these items can be found on Amazon for 4x less the price. Seriously - I found an item on Amazon for $14 that was over $40 in-store, and the quality and sizing conventions of a lot of the items I saw indicate that this is a theme in their (enormous and chaotic) inventory. There may be some higher quality items, but overall the price tags are crazy considering they only do a 25% buy-back and no returns. Costumes. Costumes. Costumes coming out your mama's wazoo. There are so many costumes sardined onto the racks here that it is difficult to shift through them all. The costume choices are all different too, and there is quite a variety of themes and time periods. They have a lot of old Navy and Army uniforms which are really cool. They also have kilts, flapper dresses, and southern belle hoop-skirts. Aside from costumes, the accessories are out of control. There are hats, crowns, bling, purses, and jewelry from every time period. The shoe selection was especially impressive. If you have a costume but need some footwear, be sure to have a look here. The prices are a bit on the high side, and you can certainly find the some of the same costumes for cheaper elsewhere, but what you get at the Dallas Vintage Shop is variety and quality. Most of the costumes are sturdier than the tripe you get at Electric Boutique. Your Vintage purchase shouldn't break after wearing it for five minutes, unless you go all Chuck Norris on some zombies. Because the prices are a bit high, you should maybe consider selling your costume back after you've worn it. I didn't have any costumer service problems, actually, I was asked if I needed help by three different salespeople. Two of them also told us to be sure and look up - as that is where a lot merchandise is displayed. It's hot and stuffy and dusty. The guys I was with had to go outside after a while to cool down and breathe. I don't blame them - the place is extremely claustrophobic. I had to take a breather myself. I should have worn a Micheal Jackson / swine flu surgical mask and hosed myself off afterwards. I had some fuzzy boogers when I blew my nose after leaving the place. I'm torn. On one hand, Dallas Vintage is a breathtaking example of a vintage shop. Wall to wall racks of clothing with accessories filling the store from floor to ceiling. On the other, it's an old lady wearing too much makeup in an attempt to cover up her wrinkles. I paid Dallas Vintage a visit trying to find the perfect flapper costume for the Elite party. I'd done a little online legwork to see how the big box costume stores were pricing their items so I would have an idea of my price range. I stepped through the door and was immediately greeted by an entire rack of flapper costumes. Perfect! I began sifting through the too-full rack, trying to find just the one. And then I caught a glimpse of a price. The exact costume that I'd seen online for about $30 for almost $50. Ok, I thought. This is a garage sale atmosphere and they'll probably come down on the pricing a little. I kept looking and did find some absolutely gorgeous outfits, that to my untrained eye looked like authentic period pieces, for over $200. Ouch. Way out of my price range, but they were stunning. I then determined that I just couldn't afford to put together an outfit and gave up the search. My shopping partner, however, found the perfect poodle skirt for her daughter's school event. Marked at $27.50, she was sure the owner would probably take $20. She headed for the counter and I headed for the back of the store. This place is truly unbelievable. There are more clothes, shoes, purses, hats, and accessories packed into this teeny tiny store than I've seen in entire department stores! And the quality of some of the clothing is amazing. I do have to say I saw another costume that sells at a big box costume store brand new for $40 on sale here for $80. It was at this point that I wondered how they do enough business to stay open. By this point, I'd been wandering around for over 5 minutes and thought my friend was surely done at the counter and looking for me. I made my way back to the front and realized she was still standing at the counter and hadn't yet been helped. When I looked behind the counter, I realized the owner was on the phone. Talking to a customer, yes, but he hadn't even acknowledged my friend. A few moments later and a breath before my friend was going to give up, he hung up the phone and looked up at my friend. She asked him if he would consider taking $20 for the skirt and without even saying anything, he frowned at her and shook his head. Which is fine. It's his business and if he wants to stand firm on his pricing, it's his prerogative. But he lost out on the sale. And she bought a brand new poodle skirt, which happened to be much cuter, at a big box costume store. For $20. Dallas Vintage is pretty cool. But in this economy, I'll have to stick to either making my own costumes or throwing them together with rummaged items. read more

Pinch me, I think I've died and gone to costume heaven. Dallas Vintage Shop is a veritable wonderland of clothing, shoes and accessories packed into a relatively unassuming strip center in Plano. "Packed" doesn't begin to described the shop: the amount of merchandise from floor to ceiling in the tiny building makes stores like Ross and TJ Maxx look like drafty warehouses. If you visit their website, you'll find tons of costume options listed, from Ancient Greeks to Zoot Suits. It may seem extreme to provide such an all inclusive list, but Dallas Vintage Shop delivers, in spades. In my experience the staff was more than helpful in navigating through the vast array of clothing, shoes, wigs and assorted treasures. Without help, you're likely to break down in a blubbering mess from the visual overload; seriously, you may need to bring a buddy and hold hands so as not to get lost under a pile of tulle and go-go boots. Jerry, the store's owner, clearly loves operating the store, and his commitment, plus the entire staff's knowledge of their inventory make this more than just another consignment shop or thrift store. Sure, their wares aren't cheap for the most part, but you're unlikely to find items of this quality at run of the mill Halloween stores and other costume shops around town. Apparently they're going to be relocating somewhere in the same area soon, which might allow them more space to display everything and could cut back on the claustrophobia. If you're in the market for a costume in a jiffy, don't care about the quality and aren't looking to spend more than you would at Wal Mart or a seasonal costume place, don't go here expecting a bargain. However, if you're looking for something authentic, unique and otherwise difficult to come by, look no further, my friends. I didn't read the reviews prior to coming to the store. I kind of wish I had. It would have saved me some time, gas and the loss of my patience. I came in hopes of finding a costume for Halloween. Let me be clear. They are quick to let you know this isn't a costume shop. They are a vintage shop. LOL! Well, excuse me. Silly me for not realizing that from the sign. Damn you Google for suggesting this place. Moving on. You will find some beautiful pieces. But it's really hard to bring yourself to pay $350 for any used items. Seriously...$350 for a used fringed dress. Also, let me note that it would be SEVERAL of the same dresses. So how "vintage" is the damn dress? :-/ The young lady notices my eye roll to the price tag and mentions that they would buy back your item for 20% of what you paid. Meh. It's still not worth it. The store is painfully clutter and going through the racks of clothes is consuming. Also, if you're anything like me. You will start to feel claustrophobic. There are sign telling you that you can't try on clothes unless you plan to buy. Oh well! Did it anyway. I'm a badass. Then, immediately I regretted that decision because I became itchy. Went here on the recommendation of Nickie! THANK YOU! I was in a euphoric state of catatonic shopping. I'm serious, there's a real danger of shiny stuff overload. They have everything. Yes, they are more expensive than hitting every vintage/costume/resale shop in town if you're putting together an outfit and you need to have it now, Dallas Vintage will accommodate you. But accommodation will not come cheap. Found the best red leather jacket with red faux fur trim in the world, fit like a glove...well...more like a jacket, but you know what I mean. It was $33 dollars. That's an okay deal, not really a steal. And to be honest, it's so packed you could get lost. Really, I was digging through old formals and went around the corner of a rack and had no idea where I was. The racks were so packed together I couldn't find an aisle and had to wait for a search party. They have every decade, every style, every color, every costume, and tons of accessories hanging from the ceilings. Need lime green go-go boots? Check. Parachute pants? Check. Needed an outfit for a 70's / 80's party we were going to. I went in with the mindset of a Michael Jackson Thriller costume, but I reconsidered when I saw their massive selection of costumes. Zoot suits, firemen, superheroes, Maverick ("...bullshit, you can be mine!"), rock stars, you name it. I eventually decided on a 70's outfit, but I look forward to going back to further accessorize the outfit. They even have platform shoes with a goldfish in the heel. Hooray for the new location!! I hated the one on Ave K. It was so packed with merchandise that you could barely move much less find what you were searching for. However, the new place off 75 north of 15th St is moth plentiful and organized The store has a mix of actual vintage clothes and more costume like pieces. I was able to find a 1940s suit at a really decent price. It was a little banged up but I was pleased with the value. They also had a handful of art deco ties that I was able to toss in. If I was going for something more 60s, 70s or 80s, they had racks of clothes for that two. Women, I think you would have even better luck as it seemed like there was twice as many selections for you. I believe they may have rented things before but now it appears that they sell their items only. However, I overheard a manager state that they will accept the clothes back for 25% of your purchase price, so it would kind of be like renting in those incidents. I don't care to shop much but this place make it easy and a bit of fun. Treat yourself to a visit. You just never know what cool thing you'll find, and if nothing else, Halloween is always just a round the corner. read more

I should have read the reviews before I went here. I have been here before (about 3 years ago), but I was just curious and was in Plano/Richardson (I had no money to buy ANYTHING in the store). I remembered it being expensive, but man... I bought $380 worth of items (many of them were Renaissance clothing to go to the fair in and to LARP in and whatever else) Apparently you are supposed to go to DVS try on things and buy online later. I can see why. A corset I bought was $60 cheaper online AND it came with a pocketwatch. (They probably took it off and hung it on the ceiling and have it on "sale" for $30+) I found the exact same lace chemise on Amazon for $40 cheaper. I found a skirt that had a tag on it that read 3 pieces for $87.50. The other two items were nowhere in sight and the owner refused to sell me the skirt for cheaper (even though 2 pieces were missing) and his spoken reason didn't make since (but I'm pretty sure he just wanted sell each item for $88). Thankfully a worker there found one of the missing pieces, so I got 2 out of 3 of the items, but still... Not worth the $87.50. Why in the world would you have 3 pieces to a costume so spread out in the store anyways? (Except to screw people over). I also happened to run across another skirt on ebay while trying to find the one above mentioned. It was the EXACT SAME one I also was thinking of getting, only it is $20 cheaper online. And at the store, I ran across a pair of victorian boots (Funtasma) I already owned (bought from amazon in 2011). Not only were the boots at DVS twice the price, but they also seemed to be used one too many times. I don't know if the owner had been stiffed one too many times at the old location or what. But you can FORGET about getting any sort of deal. Also there are absolutely NO EXCHANGES and NO RETURNS (and you're not supposed to try on things unless you plan on buying them) Supposedly you can sell back your stuff at 25% but it's probably not worth the hassle. For now on I will be making my clothes (I could have easily made the skirt at least, if I wasn't under a time crunch). Maybe I'll come back here when I am DFW millionaire and don't mind getting screwed over $20-60 a piece or whenever I need inspiration or to try on something and later buy online for half the price. The only redeeming qualities about the store is 1. No having to wait for shipping. 2. 1 out of every 435349 products in the store is really cool, good quality and ALMOST reasonably priced. read more

Whoa this place has everything!!! I wish I had known about this shop sooner! I was in search for an Ancient Egyptian costume for my younger brother and Google brought me to this place. I called and was very shocked to hear them say that they had many costumes to choose from...in May! The store is big and has every costume you can only imagine, from kids to adults. I will definitely start shopping here for Halloween. The costumes also look more expensive than the normal Halloween costume stores, yet at the same price. I liked how the lady that assisted us stayed with us the entire time. The store is big and has so much going on that you can easily get confused on where to go to look for a certain type of costume. She gave us options to try on and even told us that they can buy back the costume at 25% if interested. Some of the things in there looked like they could have been really old, but maybe that is because they were worn. However, a lot of the stuff in there are still brand new. I only wish for them to have tags showing what is preowned for people that prefer only new items. read more

TL;DR My recommendation is if you need a very small accessory, or are in a pinch time wise, this is a great place selection wise - you can find unique or one of a kind items you can physically feel/try on. If you want to be budget conscience at all, get your big items online (if not everything) and use this place as supplementary, if at all, as the prices can be 50-100% higher than places online. ------- I do love going to this shop just for the sheer experience of volume and wonder! Getting lost in the isles feels like visiting a different era or world - it's fantastic! Truly an adventure in my opinion. BUT....and there is a big but. The only crappy part is the price. Jeeeez some of the items are crazily priced. Normally, I'm down with an item being pricier based on its availability and the fact that no one really makes many of the clothing styles any more, or if it's a handmade quality item. I buy clothes at ren-fair which can be equally as pricey, and to be fair (hah) - their renaissance selection is comparable to what you'd find at ren-fair price wise (and selection-wise) if not better on selection - and year round! But, again, I feel like the quality on some of the items are what you could find online (cheaply made) or in other big box stores, and are not "hand made" or vintage items, but are being displayed and priced as if they are at something like 50-150% higher. Which makes me pretty sad. I feel like if they reasonably priced even between 20-35% higher on items, it might be acceptable because they have a brick and mortar building (costs rent - I understand - as online businesses don't always), and because of the added convenience factor. But last year, I bought a corset online for around $40 (free shipping), and the EXACT SAME ONE in their store was $90 (around 100ish with tax I assume?). This really does not come across to a consumer as "fair" pricing at all. Bear in mind these are costumes for most people, and of limited use - so most reasonable people are going to question paying that much extra for a 1 to 2 times a year outfit that is of questionable quality...just saying. So unfortunately, while I loooove the selection, and I feel like the staff is very helpful and kind, I can't give this place more than 3 stars. This store is very unique and I can almost guarantee you can find anything you are looking for here...however it does not come cheap. I found most of the items to be extremely overpriced...even the "not-so-vintage" items. I was looking for 3 items and found all I needed in the store and calculated the price at about $240 (one was just a simple top hat they were trying to sell around $90!). I ended up leaving and buying everything online for about $70. I also was able to locate multiple items in the store an cross-reference prices on the internet...the mark-up was often times greater than 100%! I just thought this was a little unfair/greedy. Although this is a very fun place to browse around...I think the reason this shop is crammed full of costumes is because simply no one can afford to buy them. I saw at least 5 people leave the store empty handed, not including myself, and another couple asking if they could rent the costumes...it's just way out of people's budget.
