It's been a little over a year since we began working with Troy and I wish we would have found him…read moresooner. We interviewed four CFPs and for us the fourth time was the charm. The first thing that stood out was his commitment to being a genuine fiduciary. I can honestly say Troy is the fiduciary of fiduciaries, and he was the only one that gave us his ADV forms. We came loaded with questions and he took the time to answer all of them. He was the only CFP when discussing fees that didn't say don't worry about my fees, I'll just make you more money to cover them. When it comes to a CFP, trust is a huge factor. Troy is honest and trustworthy and we sensed that right off the bat. He is also * Experienced and competent * Professional * Ethical * Keeps lines of communication open and is available when we need him * Knowledgeable on finance, tax, estate, insurance matters * Has a clear organized strategy (not reactive) * Answers our myriad of questions, even the same ones over and over * Helps make complex financial concepts easy to understand * Timely * Puts his clients first * Goes above and beyond and exceeds expectations * And much more! The clincher for us, in addition to the above, was/is 1) he is a small, personalized office where we don't feel like a number, and 2) he actually cares about his clients. We get the impression this is more than just a job for Troy (and let me tell you, he loves what he does!); it's like a service to others as well (combo of head and heart). We believe Troy is a rarity in his field. We also believe he deserves this review, but we selfishly hope he won't get too big because we want to keep him for ourselves. Thank you, Troy, for all you do!

His office is in Washington (state) and I'm in Washington (DC) and he still takes care of me. I am not rich by any means but regardless of how much money I invest (or don't invest) with Chris, he is ALWAYS there to help me out and answer whatever investment question I might have. Despite the ups and downs of the current economy he has always guided me in the right direction and my money has remained secure. Chris always gives me a call about once a quarter just to check in and give me a heads up on my accounts (I have a regular investment as well as IRA Roth). I usually tune him out because for the past 10 years he has never done me wrong. I completely trust him with my money. Regardless of your location, I would highly recommend him as a financial advisor. He is very personable and will help you regardless of how much you contribute. A trustworthy businessman!

    First Command Financial Planning

I would highly advise staying away from First Command…read more After reviewing my statements, trade confirmations, and insurance documents in detail, I found that my accounts were set up in a way that consistently worked against me financially. My Roth IRA contributions were repeatedly invested into the same mutual fund with a front-end sales load of about 5.75%, along with a relatively high ongoing expense ratio. Every time I contributed, a portion of my money was taken before it even had a chance to grow. My accounts were also heavily concentrated in that one fund and subject to additional maintenance fees. I was also placed into a whole life insurance policy that cost me about $465 per month. After leaving and switching to term, I now pay around $80 per month for similar coverage. That difference alone made me step back and reevaluate everything. I found out First Command gets a big kickback from signing up their clients on policies such as this. Since many of First Command's members are prior military, they take advantage of this to build report and trust with you. Then manipulate you into thinking policies, such as whole life insurance, are the best path for you. I was told I was building wealth with these, but when I surrendered my polices, I got zero dollars back. There were periods where my wife and I were struggling financially, and at the same time money was being directed into this structure. Looking back, that money could have made a real difference for us. I asked questions about whether this was the best setup for me and relied on the guidance I was given. After moving my accounts elsewhere, I was able to set up something significantly simpler, lower cost, and more transparent almost immediately. After digging deeper, I learned First Command has a documented history of regulatory action and lawsuits involving misleading sales practices, high front-end loads, and military-targeted sales. That history lines up uncomfortably well with what I experienced. Beware and think twice before proceeding with First Command. To add context, I had Austin Hill as my first advisor then transitioned to George Calbert. Both of whom are supervised by Bryan Coleman. I would advise staying clear of these guys, as well.

I gave him my info but said I do not want a policy and he assured me he would not start anything. That was about 3 months ago and I have received and invoice every month from Liberty National for life insurance. I called the rep and he said to "just ignore it". Finally got a hold of Liberty national and they were helpful in cancelling the policy. Would not recommend at all or you risk getting signed up for something you do not want.

But what is not expected is how they refuse you access to your own funds, everything has to be a song and dance with them to get to YOUR money. After a family member faced a serious life-threatening medical emergency and I needed to withdraw I faced appalling customer service. And that wasn't the first time, this was the last straw! After 20 years of banking with them, having investment, savings, and checking accounts and always carrying more than $20K as a balance in each account it is beyond frustrating and disrespectful that I the account holder had to spend an hour on the phone with various people just to withdraw and cut a check for emergency medical purposes. It's not their business what you use YOUR money for, it is YOUR money and the fact that they always want an explanation and a long drawn out difficult process that no one has time for is ridiculous. They are scam artists looking to capitalize on your money so they are offended when you withdraw. Furthermore, I close out my accounts and these greedy corporate thieves have the gall to charge me an account maintenance fee on a closed account, and threaten to send it to collections over a nominal amount that they charged after the account was closed. Bad ethics, not people to trust with your funds. Terrible customer policies and service. Beware!!!
