I stopped to get a hot dog for my son and a coney for me. They have this sandwich called a "Nightmare" which is a cheeseburger and a hot dog and a coney and probably some other stuff all combined. It sounded really good, and I wish I would have tried that. I also had a small soft serve cone. The flavor of the week was key lime, so I had that twisted with vanilla. Every week is a different flavor. I've driven past this place many times. I may have stopped in the past, but I don't really remember. Next time I drive past I will make a point of stopping. Ahhhh, an old fashioned drive-up style food shack! We came across the Dari-Ette on our cross-country cycling trip, after a day of bicycling almost 50 miles on some seriously hilly roads and strong winds. We were exhausted when we reached Dalton (with a few miles yet to ride), and this was a perfect little stop. My buddy got a burger which was hot off the grill and I had like 3 scoops of different flavors of ice cream. Each was delicious and MASSIVE. Just what the body needs after all that exercise! Seriously, the portions here are incredibly good value for the price. This was a great lil stop on our trip and it looks like lots of local and non-local folks come here for a quick and honest meal. The only issue to keep in mind is they only take cash. Also, if you've got a gluten or other food allergies, this may not be the place for you. Most food is deep-fried or in sandwiches, and the staff doesn't have a lot of time to answer tons of allergy-related questions since the lines often get long out here. I love the nostalgia I get when I come to this place. My family frequents here too and they love the ice cream and options they have for food. If you stay in business for 56 years and have the same friendly employees running the window for 12 years straight you must have the recipe for success. This reminded me of my hometown ice-cream shop/ drive-in. Took the suggestion of the woman at the window and tried the Deluxe Nightmare (a cheeseburger/ham sandwich/coney dog) with hand-cut fries and a drink. Everything came out fresh and promptly even though the hand painted sign outside warns "We are not "fast food". All your food hot or cold is prepared to order." Everything was great and the traffic through the Dari-etc was non-stop even at 3-3:00 in the afternoon. Great little place to stop in. read more

My cousin recommended this place while I was in town visiting. It did not disappoint. The parking lot was packed & there was a line but it moved pretty quickly. I got the pork BBQ sandwich with onion rings on the side while my hubby ordered the smoked sausage sandwich with a side of fries. The food was delicious & was served in ample amounts. I especially loved the onion rings. For dessert, my hubby got the banana boat (banana split) while I had a bowl of vanilla ice cream. My hubby ate every bite of that banana boat without sharing LOL. I love this place! They have the BEST ice cream. The flavors are pretty predictable, but you can mix and match them (e.g. I always ask for a chocolate and peanut butter milkshake). The predictable flavor situation isn't a bad thing - they never change so you can always count on them being there for next time. There's usually a line because it's a popular place, but there are cashier windows on both sides of the building. Portion sizes are huge. I mean absolutely huge. You should plan on sizing down if you get a milkshake (or just don't worry about it and enjoy the extra ice cream)! read more

The peanut butter shake is legit. Their maple ice cream in the fall is my favorite of all time. I personally choose the twist in a cup with crunch coat for about $2 as my typical summer go-to. This place is a local hot spot with amazing food and ice cream. They'll treat you right but come with time to spare because it's often so packed that you'll likely wait in line- everything is made to order so they're not going to be the fastest place you'll find. OMG this is good. I was passing through and did a search for burgers. The Dari-Ette came up. I ordered the cardiologist special a double cheeseburger with a chocolate malt. It's got and outside pavilion and tables next to an Amish fruit and vegetable stand and a big hill and grassy area for kids to play. Essentially you drive up and park. Then stand in a line outside to order. They only accept cash but they do have an atm there to use. After ordering you get a little buzzer that goes off when food is done. You can "dine in" ( on a tray you take out to the tables or dine in your car) or take-out "to go" in paper bags. It's always busy though so lines are typically kinda long. The whole town goes there ( tiny town of dalton) and often people recognize the town for this place. It's right off the highway so people who travel rt 30 see it. It's alright, not great, not horrible but people seems to like it more than I did given the continuous lines. It's only open during the summer and I know people get excited when it opens. Oh, hungry are you? Might I suggest the Deluxe Nightmare? The only thing you have to fear in this sandwich is the size and difficulty eating (You Will Get Messy)- with its burger patty with cheese, ham, sloppy joe, and all the toppings.
