Another friend had taken classes at this academy before and highly recommended it, so the three of us booked an Introduction to Ballet class on Sunday at 12:00. Check-in was quick and easy. The class was $25 for an hour and a half, which I think is very reasonable considering it's from an actual ballet school. There's no strict dress code, which worked out well since none of us owned ballet attire -- we just wore regular workout clothes and socks, and it was perfectly fine. The instructor was wonderful. She started by asking who had never taken ballet before, then positioned the newer students between people with experience so it would be easier to follow along. I really appreciated that, as I have no dance background and definitely found myself lost more than once. Having people around me to follow made it much less intimidating. The class itself was energetic and fun. The instructor was patient, encouraging, and made sure to keep things approachable for beginners. I'm sure my form was atrocious and I messed up plenty of times, but nobody cared -- the atmosphere was supportive and welcoming, and everyone was just there to enjoy themselves and keep trying. The class had people of all different skill levels and abilities, and it felt very inclusive. Overall, this was a great introduction class, especially for someone nervous about trying something new. I never once felt self-conscious, and I genuinely had fun. I'd highly recommend this academy to anyone looking to take dance classes, whether you have experience or not. If I were interested in pursuing ballet, I would definitely come back.

The front desk staff weren't very welcoming either. I arrived early and just had a simple question, but was met with blank stares and a vibe like I was bothering them. The studio itself wasn't ideal for focus or rehearsal. You could hear everything happening in the adjacent studios!! There was no sound insulation whatsoever. so it was hard to stay in the zone during class. Overall, the energy felt off, and I definitely wouldn't book this space for my own classes or come back to rehearse.

Immediately I knew this was a very serious class. In the beginner level here, they expect you to understand every basic position and movement. The way they design the classes is very confusing if you are new to the studio. I should have been in the absolute beginner ballet class but they rarely offer this class month to month. There is also basic beginner which is a level above absolute beginner and level below beginner. See what I mean? why are we call the classes such similar names. Yes they include descriptions, but I feel anyone new to the studio would be confused. I could tell since a lot of people in my class did feel out of place and under trained! Will I come back? I wanted to, but like I said, they rarely offer the absolute beginner and after my class with Stephanie I lost my confidence to jump into it after so many years off.

Our experience with Joffrey summer intensive NYC was sadly disappointing, and I'm sad to say the…read moreresponse I got from the program director was unsatisfactory, and basically called my child an outright liar. My daughter attended Joffrey during the heat wave in NYC, and was placed at Pearl Studios. Unfortunately, the AC in their room was out the entire week. She was able to leave class and cool off in the common areas, but this meant that she missed instructional time. The director says there were no issues, even though they had 4 fans in the classroom, handed out ice packs to the kids, and apologized during the week for the AC issues. The kids in other rooms claimed they were freezing, but the kids in my child's room were having to gather around ac vents in the hallway to cool off. Furthermore, the food is practically inedible if you buy the meal plan. We had heard about this from other people who's kids had stayed in the dorms, but I didn't quite believe it until we experienced it ourselves. I know everyone from Pearl to Joffrey is trying to cover their butts by saying there were no issues, but I'm here to tell you there were. I gave them a 3-star rating because my daughter did really like the teachers and RAs, and she would have loved the classes so much more had she not been on the brink of heat stroke. The dorms were clean and new, and she made some new friends. Plus she loved being in NYC, with the freedom to explore on her own with her roommates. So it wasn't all bad, but as I've watched her friends at other intensives over the summer, I've realized there are programs that are run so much better elsewhere.

Our daughter loves all the teachers, especially Samantha whom she started with when she was in Kindergarten. The Nutcracker performance that the children dance in is such a special opportunity for them to experience dancing at a professional level with NY City Ballet performers and it's truly a magical show. We're proud to support this family run business where the students are treated like part of the family.

There's people who have taken this class for years as well as noobs like moi, and he knows how to help everyone in his extremely popular class. Expect thirty minutes of dancey stretching followed by an hour of learning about half of a choreography and repeating it a million times for practice. I laughed a lot (at myself and at Jonathan's jokes). I may have even picked up a move or two! If you're brand new to Alvin Ailey, you can do two classes for $36, versus the one class for $24. It's not the greatest deal, seeing as how you save $4, but I did it anyway, being the economical Jew that I am. There's a bathroom adjacent to the class upstairs and locker rooms downstairs. The space is so well professional, spacious, and pretty. It's obviously the place for professional dancers, but don't be intimidated if you want to just dip your toes in and try a class here and there. I dug it. Salsa is next up for me woot woot! While you're here, take some time to learn about Alvin Ailey and his life. He's a significant figure in the world of dance and his experiences are quite the inspiration. Can't wait to come back.

Given the reputability and history of the place, more time should be spent on training basic conversational etiquettes to their young and naive teachers. Regardless of the teacher's personal issues, they should be required to retain a significant level of professionalism. Two, given they take pride in their approach to dance, their technique seems to be out of touch with today's reality and dance. Rather than building on a child's knowledge, there is an imposition of "classical" technique that can be disabling for a child than enabling. Three, the stuffiness of the rooms is inexcusable. All of this reflects badly on their ability to teach a child and maintain long-term working relationships with parents.
