I've come out here for Blues Dancing on Friday nights and it's been great! I've also seen the Latin dance styles in the main room and it's always looks like a full class of people trying hard to learn stuff, and the parties have always looks pretty lively! All in all, seems to have a decent vibe, and the location in NoMad/Flatiron area is hard to beat! Bathrooms: A bit old and disorganized, but generally clean and functional. read more

The weekly west coast swing "practice session" (which could also be called a social, Mondays at 9:30) is amazing. It's free, so you can't beat the price. It also tends to be small (5-10 people show up), which means that you have two amazing instructors there (usually Tybaldt and Kendall) who are pretty happy to give you mini-lessons and help out with stuff. Also, I did a couple full lessons with Tybaldt when I was in town and I highly recommend him if you like someone who's analytical and can break movements down into small pieces. I've heard mixed reviews of the group lessons here, but I never took one so I'm not taking that into account in my rating. read more

Updated 31 August 2017: I've been back several times and there have been considerable improvements in quality since I last was regularly here. I still won't use it as my go to when I need floor space with my dance partner, but the change to a sprung wooden floor considerably improves the feel in quality that this studio has. They have some of the best instructors in NYC regularly giving classes & workshops too. There really isn't a better place in Manhattan. But being in Manhattan, you're still limited by the facilities somewhat. There are nicer places in the suburbs, but the teachers aren't as good either. read more

I took the beginner's salsa class on Mondays in January and had a blast every time! It was a fun way to workout and learn how to dance salsa, plus you also get to meet some new people. The instructor, Thalia, is awesome! She takes the time to answer any individual questions, she goes around to help you if you are having trouble, and her lessons move quickly, but not so quick that you can't keep up. At the end of the month the class heads over to Taj lounge for Salsa night to practice and you end up having a great time. I am definitely going back for more lessons. Even if you already know how to dance salsa this class is good because she goes over specific techniques and breaks down the movements so you learn something new every week. You don't have to sign up to try a class, they offer free classes during the week and a open house once a month that you can check out to see if it's for you. read more

Definitely a good venue if you need dance rehearsal space or modeling casting calls. It seems hallway space is limited but no temperature issues or other concerns that I encountered. I didn't pay for space here so I can't speak on that but I personally didn't have a problem here & could deal with other casting calls here. read more

Purchased 2 hours of private lesson through Bloomspot. Haven't tried any of the group dance classes yet. But based on today's experience, I'm looking forward to giving the group classes a shot. The instructor was an adorable 17-year-old, who's been competing since she was 5! We covered 5 or 6 different styles and I realized why I'd never picked up ballroom dancing (notwithstanding my love of dance). Am I really supposed to trust the man and follow him around and let him lead me wherever he chooses and keep on dancing until he decides to stop?!? ;-p The studio was clean and airy. The staff was extremely warm and friendly. I've never been to another ballroom dance studio so I don't really have a point of reference for comparison. But so far, I have no desire to try out a different place as I'm quite satisfied with today's experience. read more

Stepping Out hosts a terrific party called 'Friday Night Fever" on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of each month. Great mix of Ballroom, Latin, and Hustle music and dance. The people who host this party as well as the professionals and advanced dancers are extremely friendly and happy to dance with people of all dance levels. If you want to try ballroom dancing as an adult, this is a great studio to try it in. All the group classes are taught by very high level professional dancers who are very nice and helpful. Some are just amazing. The classes rotate which has pros and cons. Pro: you don't need a partner. Con: you may have to dance with someone you may not want to. There is one creepy older man that has been there apparently forever, takes most of the classes, thinks he knows everything, and is more touchy than necessary. It is dancing so some contact is supposed to happen, but he usually adds something extra. Women who are new may initially not be aware that he's doing something wrong and/or may not be able to tell him out of politeness. That's probably why he loves dancing with women that are new. I have been able to avoid dancing with him without much push back from the instructors, but that always feels kind of awkward and rude. I also feel bad because then the other women are dancing with him more so it doesn't feel right as a solution. read more

Have not much dance experience but saw the groupon promotion for beginner classes at Stepping Out. Never been there before. Tried a beginning tango class through the groupon. Woman listed as teaching the class wasn't the teacher. Instead a guy Jose came who said he was from Argentina. He didn't speak English well and acted as if he didn't have a clue how or what to teach though he moved like a trained dancer. Only one other person was in the class. This was a woman also there through groupon. The instructor spent most of the time dancing with her since he claimed he was single and she was attractive. Later he told me I shouldn't come back to the class unless I practiced because he "needed to be challenged in order to teach". Obviously he wanted her back. Worse, after the class was over, he suggested to try the free student practice party. Sounded like a good idea. Me and the woman waited for it. As soon as it began, he came over and hit on the woman student and began dancing with her. Everyone else there was in couples and doing different dances. I guess it was a good deal for the woman student since she can probably trade sex for free dance lessons from the Argentine guy. I'm not going back to that tango "class" and have doubts about this entire Stepping Out promotion for non-existing beginner classes.May try another type of dance there (maybe!) but definitely NOT TANGO. I'm thinking that Stepping out may be a good place for advanced dancing students but NOTfor beginners. The groupon was a rip-off! read more

I think this studio is very good for social learners- they have a lot of group classes and offer a wide range of levels. It's a laid back atmosphere, they have a fun staff and share good general knowledge. You will definitely gain a good vocabulary of dance steps, etc. However, for those seeking private or group instruction for competitive levels and really want to improve on technique, etc.- I think you will find better instructors elsewhere. read more

I attend a few dance socials at this studio occasionally and tend to have a pretty decent time. The location is great and very central to quite a few trains. If your dance of choice is salsa, I highly recommend checking out the Sunday socials (LVG and Jimmy Anton). I purchased a class through Course Horse for the Beginner Swing group class with Sophie. When I went there with my boyfriend, there were two front desk people and we waited about 2-3 minutes while one of them worked with a person who was ahead of us. I was expecting to be greeted with a friendly welcome, since I was confused of what to do--I had to catch the eye of the second front desk person so I can ask if I could go up to her. Aside from that, registering in their system was quick and easy, and we were told to go to Studio B. As soon as we went into the room, I felt a bit chilly, but don't worry you will warm up as soon as you start practicing. Sophie came into the room and we said our "Hello's." She waited a few minutes and then stated that she was going to start the class--my boyfriend and I were the only two in the group class! Yay! A group class turned private lesson--awesome! So we started with the basic steps and then were taught two moves to go along with it. Since we were the only two there, Sophie was able to correct us in a very constructive and non-intimidating way. Sophie recognized that I was not able to let the guy lead, so she gave me good suggestions so I may correct it. Sophie told my boyfriend to record her and I so we could remember the steps and continue practicing. Overall, I had a very good time and appreciated the advice provided--Sophie overall is nice, a good instructor and knowledgeable. I will be returning (hopefully) sometime soon. read more

Great studio for dancing. I attended my moms private event for her bday. The price was great and our instructor was friendly. It seemed like our whole group had a blast. The unfortunate part was that although the instructor was only a very few minutes late the next "class" came in before we were done and wet basically kicking us out the room. We had just finished our picture and were grabbing things to leave. It was very uncomfortable and our guests were a bit disappointed. Luckily it didn't completely taint our experience. Would recommend that the staff be the ones to enter the private rooms FIRST when they are being occupied over time. It just looks more professional and leaves a better impression. read more

There was a booking mix-up for a room that we needed this evening and although a room wasn't available, she went above and beyond to ensure she made it happen for us. I don't know much about their ballroom dance privates or group classes but they have a great dance rental studio business here. Solid place if your'e looking to teach class or workshops and need a space but don't have one of your own. Loud speaker system with soundproof studios. Large clean mirrors. Bathrooms have clean showers and they have towel service. Front desk is friendly. It has everything you need in a great location. I use them 20 times/week for my dance classes -- they are open around the clock, too, which is great. Good stuff if you are looking to teach classes. read more

My fiance and I had a horrible experience here, one that has kept us from going back, even though we paid for the full month. We took 3 months of basic classes at a different studio -- a couples-only class that allowed us to stay partners the whole time. After that class was completed, we decided to try Stepping Out because their website says that although they recommend you rotate partners, you can tell the instructor at the beginning of the course if you would prefer not to. This was important to us. Our reason for learning to dance is that we want to know what we're doing when it comes to our first dance and wedding reception next year. We are not trying to become professional ballroom dancers. We really only care about how we dance together -- if I dance with someone else at my wedding reception, it is unlikely that gentleman will have taken ballroom lessons, so my experience in switching partners won't really matter. We tried the beginning class (unsure if we were ready for their Int. level) and were subjected to a substitute teacher -- Ernesto -- who was rude and intimidating, and gave the impression that he was too good to be there and had better things to do than be bothered with us amateurs. I felt sorry for the people who were there taking their very first class ever. If we had not already had 3 months of classes, we would have been completely lost. One couple kept asking us, "Are you SURE this is the beginning class?" She even asked Ernesto and he arrogantly said to trust him, it WAS the beginning class and that he had been teaching beginning dance for years. I say just because you HAVE been doing something for years does not mean that you SHOULD be doing it or that you do it well. He taught too fast. In teaching swing he told us he didn't have any swing music, so we would be dancing to Pink instead. (Nice to know he prepared.) He initially taught the steps with the swing rhythm, but when he had us practice without music he counted in a steady "one, two, three, four" instead of a "slow, slow, quick, quick" -- which threw most people off when he turned the music on and the rhythm was different from what they'd been practicing. He had people switch partners about every 2 minutes. When we informed him (politely) that we were not switching, and 2 other couples said the same, he ROLLED HIS EYES. He then gave us a lecture on not switching partners and repeated the lecture 3 times, saying that we weren't going to learn ANYTHING by dancing with the same partner. So...if I learn the correct steps, do them in the correct order, in time to the music, I will still have learned nothing? Just because I stayed with the same partner? I don't get that. I also don't get how the people switching learn anything since they have to try to learn the steps AND get used to a new partner every couple of minutes... By the end of class I was furious. We didn't pay them to be scolded and have someone roll their eyes at us. We got absolutely nothing from that class -- it was a complete waste of our time. At the front desk another couple from the class was standing there complaining about the teacher. The teacher meanwhile, walked by and laughed when he saw them there. I let the people at the front desk know that we had the same bad experience and that if he had been the regular teacher, I would have been standing there asking for my money back. They reassured us that the regular teacher would be back the following week, one without an attitude. The following week we were both sick, so we didn't go. And then the week after that we realized that the first class had left such a bad taste in our mouths that we really didn't want to go back there. Perhaps they have other, wonderful teachers. Perhaps our sub is even wonderful with a more advanced level, one that he feels challenges him more and doesn't bore him. I don't know. All I know is that we'd rather let them have the rest of the month's money and just be done with it. I'm sorry one bad experience ruined my impression of the studio overall, but that should give you an idea JUST how bad it was. Best of luck. read more

I have been coming to stepping out for years. I've tried other studios and go to them as well. It's a little pricey if you only take one class/week. But the unlimited class package is decent. I've taken every single class at this studio at one point and I've learned that there's only specific teachers I want to take. My experience is that some teachers are wonderful, good, mediocre, or bad, and you should ask around before you sign up for a teacher. Just because someone is a great dancer does not make them a good teacher. I recommend this studio if you want to learn international ballroom. There are some excellent standard teachers who focus on technique, especially Tetyana and Lukas. Even all the advanced/intermediate dancers take Tetyana's beginner classes because she is such a great teacher. Some people really like Jaime and Linda but I'm not that interested in their teaching style. For international latin, Christian and Martina have the best classes. Their classes are very popular. However, Christian has no patience for people who do not have correct technique and he is very critical. Martina's beginner classes are not really true beginners; she teaches at the interm/advanced level. I do not like their social ballroom/latin classes at all. They are geared toward people who might be trying something new... casually learning. So if you come from a dance background, you will be bored by the lack of technique. The instructors are basically just showing you patterns to copy. The Argentine Tango/Salsa instructors at Intermed/Advanced level are great. For Beg through Adv International Standard ballroom, I give 4 stars. For the rest of the studio classes, I give 3 stars. read more

I went there for a hustle party or Wednesday and the music made me want to vomit. The DJ's on Wednesday do not play anything close to oldies or anything that has a meoldy for Hustle Dancing. I cant see why anyone would want to go there. The management would be better served with tapes. I have a girl friend in NYC who after taking classes and dancing for the past few years here, now can dance like a star on the "Dancing with The Star" show. (In fact she is in the video on this studio's Yelp page too). After seeing how graceful she danced in the photos and videos on her FB page, I decided to come visit her while she was doing a rehearsal for a show one evening and take a beginning one-hour salsa class here for $20. I liked how small the class size was, so you got individual attention from the two instructors and also got to dance with pretty much everyone of the opposite sex there. It did get really hot once we started practicing though so they could increase the A/C a little there. If I lived in NYC I would definitely go there more often to practice more. read more

Ridiculously deceptive marketing practices! They advertise their beginner salsa classes as "free" on Eventbrite in order to avoid paying the booking fees. But when my boyfriend and I showed up for our registered class we were told that it was actually $24 a person. The woman at the front desk apologized, refused to make any kind of financial accommodation, and acknowledged that this was not the first time the issue had occurred. We just moved to the neighborhood and were hoping to check out the studio as somewhere we could take ongoing dance classes but given the negative customer service experience will not be back. If the business really cared about keeping its customers, it would 1) advertise responsibly with clear upfront information on costs with all of its partner sites and 2) offer some type of accommodation for its misleading information and our wasted time. read more

We live in Great Neck Li, purchase an introductory beginner class, they gave us a 6pm appointment when we got there, after driving for 1 hour and paying for parking, they told us they could not give us the class. We were going for Tango Argentino, when the instructor came out to informed us that she could not give us the class, because she had other appointments she was unapologetic and unfriendly. I studied dance and figured a dance studio would be great for my daughters 1st birthday celebration. I have several witnesses. However George Ciao ruined that experience for me! George Ciao is an unprofessional scam artist. This place ruined my daughters birthday party. George Ciao verbally abused and attacked my husband as soon as he stepped into the studio we booked from 5-8. He yelled at my husband to "switch rooms or get out!" after we have proof in writing our confirmation of the studio we paid for. We showed up at 5pm for my one yr olds first birthday party. This little man spoke to me nastily with his hands in my face and caused me to to flip out. This animal spoke to us like dogs, had his hands in my face. Told us "never have another party here again" when this was our first time there! Caused my party to start 2 hrs late! My party was ruined I was too distraught to take pictures of my babies first party with family and friends. Emotionally scarred. Scam artists!!!!! We were treated and spoken to like animals. Told to "get out and take your money back, never have a party here again!" Awfully ran business with the most unprofessional staff I have ever been around ever! Beware!!!!!! STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! Broadway Dance Center or Steps is the way to go. They give a bad name to dance studios. AWFUL!!! Our whole day was thrown off. I don't have one picture of my baby after I was treated like nothing, yelled at and told to leave. My daughter threw a fit after all of the commotion. I was thrown off the whole evening. Ruined!!!! After I flipped on this little man that was hand talking and speaking to me unprofessionally we were told "ok stay in the studio". That was around 6:30pm. Our party was supposed to be from 5-8. My family saw how distraught I was and they setup the room for me. Catered food was already on its way, I wanted to leave! The rest of the night was a blur not one picture of my daughter because it was all ruined!!!!! Family was showing up with gifts and food was on its way it was too chaotic to cancel. We drove there from NJ, family from NYC and upstate. We were told too many times by this little man to "take your money back and leave". BEWARE!!!!! An employee told us "this happens all the time". Do you want to host an event where you are coerced to leave after you have booked and received confirm? My husband double checked the monday before our saturday party and received an email confirm all was well. An "Anita" person whom my husband booked with was there. She wouldn't even come out!!! Please take my review serious. This is not spam! Nightmare that I cannot redo. They are nasty and unprofessional. The front desk people gave me dirty snobbish looks as if I did something wrong. The place was empty. Most dance schools are crowded on saturdays, I know because I used to dance. Please listen people, do not host anything here. You will book one room and then show up and be forced or bullied into using a room you did not pay for. We did not move that was not going to happen. The little rude man disappeared the rest of the night. The staff had the nerve around 8:15pm to start walking back and forth past the room we were in. The little man told us stay however long after my flip out. That did not mean 15 mins extra when my party was derailed 2 hrs!!!! I had to put this old woman dressed in young girl clothes in her place because she thought she was going to force us out of the room. As soon as I told him to give us our money back he looked shocked, but he offered us our money back several times so I figured i'd oblige. He was hoping we would leave and so that he could scam us out of our money. This place is bleeding money and hopefully it will shutdown for good. Its staff and owner deserve to be on the street! One woman there said this happens all of the time. All of the time? What kind of establishment is this? Came here last night for the Behind the Groove funk/house/hustle/everything dance party hosted by Kwik Step. Venue was amazing! They had the lights off and some nice purple moving lights around the floor. They also had opened both sides of the studios so that we had a large space to dance. I've never been here to take any classes so I can't speak upon that. It was amazing to see many people dancing different styles from hustle, breaking, locking, house, waacking, salsa, merengue, ballroom etc. The sound quality from the music was also very good, of course you have Kwik Step spinning so you already know its going to be an amazing experience with the music. The people in the studio were all very friendly as well, everyone complimented each other and were willing to learn and help one another when it came to dancing. Definitely will be coming back in the future, maybe I'll have to try out hustle haha! read more

On Friday I took the Hip Hop Belly Dance class with the Indiggo Twins and I can't believe the way I started to dance. I have never taken a dance class but the teachers professionalism, passion and patience has been a big inspiration to me. I love their dance moves and how artistic and thorough they are. Plus it is a unique class as it is taught by two very cute twins who have great bellies and very graceful arms and moves. They taught me such good exercises to improve my wrist flexibility and posture and i can't wait for the next class. Moreover, first class was cheap and they have a promotional package of 8 classes. I was drawn to Stepping Out because of the variety of dance styles offered, teachers I had heard of from others, and teachers I already knew. I love the location, so close to the heart of Chelsea. I found the atmosphere to be welcoming and friendly, with a general feeling of generosity. The teachers are among the best I have studied with, and the classes they teach are lively and exciting. When I first moved in New York, I attended the free swing/salsa lesson on a Friday night. Thought taking some dancing lessons would help me meet people. This place is great. Each instructor has something unique to offer, and there is a teacher here for everyone. At first, I went crazy taking all the lessons I could fit into my schedule trying out every type of dance available. It was a lot of fun, I did meet great people, and I recommend starting out with the unlimited beginner package if you're new to dancing. Now, I'm concentrating on Argentine Tango, and truly believe this is the place to study and practice tango. The Tango and Te on Sunday is a relaxed practica that I truly enjoy. Every tango teacher here is impressive. My favorite classes are with Alfredo and Maria Jose. I take private lessons with Alfredo, as well, and definitely recommend them. I've been coming to this studio for over a year now, and it is difficult for me to believe I'll be in a performance this coming month. Outside of the Tango world, I recommend Nicholas's salsa classes and Simone's swing and hustle classes. Samba with Ernesto or Boris is excellent. Honestly, I just don't think you can go wrong here.
