Dr Birkbeck is awesome! The Nursing Staff is awesome! The receptionists service was AWFUL! My experience with the front, the receptionist, was AWFUL. I sat for over 30 min after my scheduled appointment time, I even waited approximately 15 min to ask when I was going to be seen and why a patient that came in after me was being called before me and the receptionist said with a superior tone, "some patients need x rays and there are different doctors" (I literally heard the patient called for the same doctor as me), and then I was told by the nurse "I'm sorry about the wait, you were never checked in". To me that is unacceptable, it wasn't even that busy in the front, why wasn't I checked in by the receptionist? The way the receptionist dealt with me and my situation made me feel like she was looking down on me, like I was stupid or something. I'm very observant and pay attention to things. I had other appointments to get to, I even came in early. read more

I've seen Dr. Birkbeck twice, one for each wrist roughly a year apart. The first experience, I never got a clear answer, even after an MRI and cortisone injection, as to why I was in pain. The second experience I chose Dr. Birkbeck because I thought I was an existing patient since it'd only been a year (turns out, I wasn't. They charged my insurance for a new patient exam...the bill in and of itself is a whole other issue.) I had been in a motorcycle accident on 7/6 and received a diagnosis in the ER for a left wrist fracture. When I showed up 4 days post accident, he took me out of the ER splint, put me in a cock-up wrist brace and sent me on my way for another week. Then he puts it in his records that I agreed to the brace! (I would have much preferred a cast for the stability) He also spent less than 10 minutes with me in the exam room, and I wasn't swollen at this point. I then go back, at this point 10 days post accident, and get follow up x-rays in which he informs me there's been no change...well no kidding duh! I can remove the brace to shower (he told me I could) and it was not stable enough so it was moving! I then explain to him that with my work, the brace wasn't stable enough for me and he says, and I quote "I'm glad you told me. We can switch it up or I can put you in a cast, IF YOU'D LIKE". What is this, patient is the doctor for the day?! So I opt for the cast, and his medical assistant Crystal puts it on way too loosely. I have to come back in two days later for a new cast to be put on! Luckily, this time around, Taylor Luis (his other medical assistant) apologized that I had to come back in and she cut off the loose cast and put me in a new, much more secure, one. Again, this appointment, the doc spent less than 10 minutes with me. I was then told to follow up in 4 weeks. They cut me out of the cast, took x-rays, and put me in the room. The doc comes back and says "your x-rays are looking great and you're healing up nicely. I'm going to put you back in a brace for two to three weeks and then I'd like you to start moving and using your wrist. But I don't need to see you again, unless you feel it necessary, and I don't think you'll need physical therapy". So I say "Oh so I'm healed?" and he says "No, you're healing"...So 5.5 weeks post-fracture, and he sends me on my way, not fully healed, and doesn't need to see me again? Didn't seem right. Especially after yet again another 10 minute appointment. I am now 8.5 weeks post accident, still in a brace because the pain is so bad I almost went back on opioids, and am going to eat the cost to see another doctor for a second opinion. Keep in mind, this was not a compound fracture that required surgery, a simple distal radius fracture. I would have given 0-1 stars if it weren't for his medical assistant, Taylor Luis. She has been extremely pleasant and helpful. When I called for my request for medical records to be sent to another doctor, she was very polite and understanding, not offended that I'm taking my business elsewhere. If I could review just her, I would give her 5 stars. read more

Five stars for Dr. Birkbeck, he's an amazing doctor with phenomenal attention to detail. His staff was almost equally amazing with their same day call backs and complete understanding with my hundreds of questions. I'm so lucky to have had Birkbeck do my hand surgery. He was meticulous about my sensitivities and made the entire experience as good as it could be. Everything from having a great anesthesiologist to coming to the hospital at 6 am when I had a reaction to the pain medications. Great follow through, great doctor, great experience. read more

Doctor Birkbeck conducted surgery on my left humerus after I shattered it during a sporting incident. I had been turned away by approximately 15-20 other surgeons due to the location of where the breaks were. Referred myself to an orthopedic Dr for my hand and wrist, after nearly 2 years of treatments. Online and the ortho department didn't explain to me that there was a separate orthopedic hand specialist in theor department and that I would be seeing him (Daniel Birkbeck). I was under the impression, I would be seen at the Vacaville Clinic. It wasn't until my apt confirmation call,that I was informed it would be with a hand specialist in Fairfield. The transparency at this clinic is below average. In addition to that the Dr. Birkbeck was 30 minutes late for my apt.and no one informed me he was behind. I was allotted a 30 minute slot for my appointment. He cut me off several times during my consultation to shut me up and rush my appointment along. He barely glanced at my hand before walking out. He was in the room for 6 minutes. I paid for 30 minutes and was unable to explain in through detail because he kept interrupting me. read more

A jerk of a doctor. Made us wait over an hour and a half then came in and spent 5 minutes not even looking at my moms hand, just said there was nothing he would do. Came in like he was bothered by is being there after hours when he was the one who couldn't keep a schedule and was over an hour and a half late to the appt. appt was at 3:30. Didn't show his face in the room until after 5pm. Useless. Not helpful and no bedside manner. Don't go here if you can help it at all! Didn't even discuss the MRI or X-rays. Dr. Birkbeck performed wrist surgery on my son and seems to have done a great job. He is only 10 days post surgery but healing very well and he had very little pain after the surgery. The doctor called several times before and after surgery to check in. PA is friendly and seems great, too. Dr birkbeck is amazing having to go through hand reconstruction twice with different surgeons I was able to appreciate how fast and accurately I healed as well as getting my natural movement back, when he was my surgeon. WELL, After seriously tweaking my finger during a viscous game of beach volleyball in Carlsbad in July (we still won) and after the swelling reduced some I noticed I had little muscle control over the finger, thinking it was broken.... Nope, my Dr. friend checks it our during a camping trip/sea kayaking trek and she sez....it looks like the tendon is broken (damn!), so I asked for a referral and was told Dr. Birkbeck is the Best! So, I made an appt. and found he's a hand specialist /hand surgeon, whom prefers basic treatment first over surgery. So, his female assistant (pretty & perky) greets me, very happy and courteous, telling me "he will be right in to see you" (Ok, let me find a magazine to read as this will probably take a while) and BAM!, there he is....smilin' and shakes my hand firmly (the good one!) and I must say he's got the best office/bed side manner of any Doc I've EVER met! A Real positive guy, sez " Well, you broke the tendons on both sides of the joint and I prefer to have you have it in a splint to let us see how well it heals on it's own first."..Wow!, I was expecting the "Well, we need to schedule u for surgery as soon as possible" speech, but he was real down to earth, explained everything, great guy, great attitude! A breath of fesh air..this guy should give motivational speeches to other Docs to train them on patient service!! Hands down, I'm real happy and my finger is getting better!..just in time for indoor basketball season and skiing, and . mud ridin' on the dirt bikes! and......(typed with splint, not easy!) read more

Dr. Birkbeck has been treating me for the last 3 years for my injury to my wrist and thumb. I have had nothing but good experiences with Dr. Birkbeck. I'm able to tell him what I feel, how I feel, and where I feel the pain. He listens to me and all my complaints without shutting me off which is something you don't find often in surgery physicians. He's compassionate, understanding, and willing to do whatever he can to alleviate the issues. I feel he tells me what will be the best treatment for the type of injury I have. So far I've been receiving cortisone injections because surgery is just not the right approach at this time and I appreciate him telling me that. I don't find him to be "surgery" happy and that's great. I would recommend Dr Birbeck for anyone that's going through any type of hand injury. read more

Forget the doc. The office staff was incredibly rude. Arrived to my appointment on time, and the office staff informed me I was supposed to arrive 30 minutes early to fill out forms, and that they would not be able to see me. They already had most of my information on file from when I set the appointment. This was supposed to be my first appointment with this doc. Not sure about the doc but I would avoid this place solely based on the customer service and rude office staff. read more

I went in to see Dr. Birkbeck because of occasional pain in my thumb starting three years ago. Birkbeck played with my thumb for 5 minutes, said I had arthritis and left and being a healthy 21-year-old studying Art and Painting this greatly affected me. He then went on to give me a cortisone shot (which he injected straight into the fleshy palm-side of my thumb, rather than from the back as he should have), which caused the entire muscle to atrophy and my thumb is now almost useless and I have to constantly wear a brace to stabilize the weakened joint. I have never had a doctor treat me so badly and incompetently. Thanks to Dr. Birkbeck I will most likely never paint again. read more

Let me start by saying that Dr Birkbeck is one of the nicest people I have met since moving to the North Bay three years ago. Not only is he a very gifted surgeon and family man but also just a down to earth approachable guy that likes to Mt Bike. I sought out Dr Birkbeck and his team specifically because he specializes in hand and wrist surgery. My experience was absolutely wonderful from the initial consultation to the final follow up appointment. I was also seen by one of the groups PA's Alexis Rockwell and she is amazing as well. It was obvious to me that they care very deeply about how their patents are doing post surgery and I was given ample opportunities and encouraged to ask questions. I had absolutely no discomfort after my surgery and was given adequate pain medication if I should need it post surgically but it was not required. I am not in a big hurry to have surgery again anytime soon but if the need should arise there is no question in my mind that I would chose Dr Birkbeck and his team of dedicated professionals for any orthopedic needs I may require in the future. I would also not hesitate to refer my friends and family to Dr Birkbeck. From the bottom of my heart thank you once again Dr Birkbeck for such outstanding care. P.S. i had surgery by Dr. Birbeck on my right hand for carpel tunnel and severe tendonitis. At first I had to admit I wasn't sure what to expect, but he helped ease my thoughts. I've heard positive feedback from a couple of his patients. I understand the office is very busy so I ggive credit to the girls at the front. There's only a couple of girls dealing with the front so I didn't have to wait long before they took care of me. I have to say I feel relief already and we just have to be patient with them and understand and put ourselves in their shoes. They have ALOT of patients and ALOT going on in that office....I have no complaints and I would definitely refer them to my friends. Keep in mind, it's a busy office because there are several doctors in that office and they try to be effiecient as they can, but birbeck is good. He gets doen to the subject and doesn't beat around the bush. He's got alot of patients so its not that he's short with you, he's just one 'requested' doctor for ALL his patients. :) read more

Dr. Birkbeck is a decent surgeon but his office staffs the most unfriendly and unhelpful people I have ever had the displeasure to encounter. (The second star is for his surgical ability otherwise it would be one). When you walk in they treat you like you are bothering them. The second time I went in there after surgery they were too busy talking on the phone to even acknowledge me. I stood there and stood there and finally asked a passing nurse for help. His medical assistant Michelle won't answer her phone, emails or return your calls and they actually charge you $25. to fill out disablity forms. When I asked the Dr. about it he explained it takes his staff time to fill out the forms when they could be doing other things. So I guess that means he pays his staff $100./hour. I have one more appointment with these awful, nasty, miserable people and hope to never have to deal with them again. read more
