Divey spot for a cheap drink. The decor is eclectic and interesting - there are various paintings on the wall and ceiling. The indoor part has very limited seating so I can see how seating can run out with a popular act. The times I've been, we haven't had a problem catching a seat and the tables are right next to the stage so it's a pretty intimate venue to hear music. They also hold UNT "research on tap" that I have attended. While you drink, you can hear lectures on subjects from experts in that field. It's never packed and always super interesting. The one I attended was on drinking and exercise... it's less than an hour and even has a question and answer session with the audience. read more

Great little local bar. It has a small town feel. The main bar area is pretty spacious and has a walk up bar toward the back. While Sometimes it's nice to have the wait staff, I think it was pretty great to be able to go and get what you want when you want and not have to worry about waiting for a server. They had an outdoor area as well with a covered patio, it had picnic tables and another walk up bar. There were stages both inside and outside. We were there for a Stone Temple Pilots cover band. It was a lot of fun and very reasonable at $10/ ticket in advance. I think it was $15 at the door. read more

They have a big patio in the back with an open bar and stage for performers. We came during the middle of the day, so they weren't very busy. The inside was very big and open. The lights were very dim which I liked. I'm not sure how the night atmosphere is, but it seems like a chill place to hangout and drink. The service was great! Our dog got sick and threw up outside on the patio. So they brought us a roll of paper towels and a huge dish holder of water for our dog cuz he was very hot Feel bad for him throwing up everywhere, but they were helpful and kind! Walked in paid my admission only to find out EVERY seat and table was reserved and only a handful of people there (mostly employees) needless to say I turned around and got my money back. I really appreciate Dan's and have seen both Andrew WK and the Decemberists here. So clearly, some really good local and national artists choose to play Dan's, thank god. I think Dan's is second only to Rubber Gloves in the caliber of bands that play Denton, and it's a very close second. The venue is almost hidden and doesnt have any signage out (you'll miss it if you blink) but look for the marquee sign and teal exterior walls. Inside you'll find a friendly staff, cheap beer, nice stage and good soundsystem. And a nice big patio for those humid summer nights. Dan's is a cool, smaller, dive bar/venue without the dirty dive feel. We came to watch a friend's show and had a blast. Granted, I'm pretty sure us and our friends accounted for a majority of the people there, but it was also a Tuesday night so can't be too mad. We were charged a $5 cover each, but that went to the band and our friend so I also didn't feel bad about paying that one bit. Pros - I'm a sucker for the intimate dive joints. This place has it all from the dark bathrooms to the assorted craft beers on tap. There's a great patio outdoors where you can smoke, bring the pup, or take a break from the band inside and talk with your people. - The prices were right last night. From the cover to beer. Draft beer list was posted with ABV's and prices. Although I didn't see prices for the other beers such as some of the canned, our tab still came in at under $15 for two beers each! (It also looked like they sold Parliaments and American Spirits, if needed, although I'm sure that's a more premium fare.) - The vibe. Maybe it was just the evening or it could have been Dan's, but there was just a little magic in the air with the music and cool weather out on the patio. Easy service, easy listening. Good memories, for sure. - Easy street parking. I could see it potentially being difficult on the weekends. Downfalls - It's a biggie. No food! Bah. But then again, there's a Fuzzy's next door so wasn't really that mad. It's also Denton so there's tons of places to get your cravings satisfied within minutes. No big deal. - This was a longer trek for us. If you're checking out a show and coming from DFW, make sure someone will be sober and/or awake. Took us about 45 minutes each way so if you can handle that, you'll be just fine. I'd definitely go see a show here again. read more

I'm in town from San Diego and a group of us tried to go here because there was live music, but the guy working the door was a complete jerk. First of all, he didn't even seem like he was employed by this establishment and when he told us it was a $20 cover, we honestly thought he was a tweaker, trying to scam us. I looked inside the bar from the door and it was embarrassingly empty for a Saturday night. Wouldn't you think if business was that slow, you'd try to get people in rather than desuade them by a steep cover charge? The entree fee isn't what stopped us, the guy was just so rude and unprofessional. We didn't want to deal with anyone else who might treat us the same way. We're currently down the street at Harvest House listening gonna awesome Pink Floyd cover band ($2 cover) and the staff is very friendly. read more

Best advice you are going to get today is to read this review before you go to a show at this place. Went to see James McMurtry. Got tickets online which said "Doors open 7:30 Show at 9:00." Website said "Doors open 7:30 Show at 9:00." Got there right at 7:30 and every table was taken. Not because people had been standing in line and got there before we did and got in before us when they opened the doors at 7:30. I can deal with that. That would be my bad. But that was not the case. In fact, the less than intellectually impressive (my opinion, I could be wrong) staff person finally said it was because they actually opened the doors at 3:00. Huh? Talked with the guy in charge (sad commentary on the rest of the people who work there that THIS was the guy who was presumably the smartest one there (my opinion, I could be wrong) ) and he said that what the ticket and website meant was that the "doors open at 3:00 but they don't start taking tickets until 7:30." Huh? That means that people can apparently show up anytime after 3:00, grab a table and sit but somehow their ticket is not "taken" until 7:30 (??!!) ? Then the people who follow the instructions on the ticket and website, and expect the doors to open at 7:30 because , well, the ticket and the website say doors open at 7:30, can't get a seat because we believed what we were told, twice, by Dan's Silverleaf. Look, they can run their shows and their business however they want, assuming they are sentient enough to do so ( this telling time thing appears to be something of an obstacle and they really don't seem to have a good grasp of the meaning of the words "doors" and "open." ) But what they cannot do is put absolutely false information on the website and the ticket and then try and give some literally incoherent would be explanation for their failure to be...um... truthful. And the problem is so easily solved. Just say...wait for it..(you already figured it out although the Dan's Silverleaf staff brain trust hasn't ).. just say "DOORS OPEN AT 3:00 !!!!!!" Okay, I'm honest and fact-based and don't make blatant misrepresentations like, well, you know who, and I believe you are entitled to all the relevant information, unlike, well, you know who, so I will tell you that Dan's Silverleaf agreed to refund my money for the tickets. Doesn't exactly make it even seeing as how we had a 96.4 mile round trip ( I googled mapped it. I told you I was honest and fact-based ) to go to the show. But I'm sure they thought it was the least they could do and for once I was in total agreement; it was the least they could do. Nevertheless, this is now water under the bridge for me but PLEASE keep this review in mind if you are thinking about going to a show there. Not saying at all you shouldn't. ( My opinion, I could be wrong.) I'm just making sure you have all the pertinent information since that doesn't seem to be a thing those people care about very much. However, you will get the next episode if I do not get my refund. That might actually get me annoyed. read more

This is a laid back, grungy college bar without being a typical grungy, college bar. Not once did I smell patchouli. Collage kids go here, but so do people in there 30s. They have a lot of live music at Dan's and the bands that I've seen here have been really good. The beer is cheap and the bartenders are friendly and attentive. I also happened to go here this past spring when they had their Crawfish Boil: and they did the annual Mud-Bug Boil proper. The crawdaddies were good and spicy, and they also had Cajun sausage, potatoes, and corn. Everything was fantastic, but the corm was really hot, so you have officially been warned. They also have a big patio area if you feel like sitting inside, and the inside is spacious. The only drawback to Dan's is that it can be a little hard to find. Make sure you go with a friend who's been there before, or get really directions. read more

Having just moved from Dallas to Denton I was heartbroken by the dominance of sports bars and over-priced music venues in this city. I was dragged to a show here one night and it was like stepping into a once lively Deep Ellum-esque bar (pre-2000). The place had quirky art on the walls, book shelves with paperbacks (I do wonder if anyone reads these), cheap drinks, and a spacious patio with its own bar and television screen so that you can watch the show from the outside. Besides my experience there (which was wonderful!), I often see some impressive acts scheduled to play here. I cannot wait to return for more. If anything negative to say it is that the venue seems quite small and I wonder how the experience will be for a bigger act as the one I saw was quite intimate. A fun bar with a patio, great staff, a legendary owner, and---most importantly---exactly the right dimensions, acoustics, and soundboard talent for live music. I saw the Mother Hips here a few weeks ago. This was my first ever trip to the Silver Leaf. I drove up from the Houston area not knowing what to expect. I wasn't disappointed. It's a fantastic place to see a band. Very small and intimate. I was amazed at the sound quality in the place. Even at high volume the sound was clean and bright. That may have had a little to do with the band also. They have a nice selection of local beers which I appreciate. I would without a doubt travel to Dan's Silver Leaf again to listen to a good band! The silver has tarnished! This weekend I took a road trip of sorts to see a concert with a friend at a small college friendly bar. After proving that my friend's iPhone navigation was useless, I pulled out my droid and found the place. What we saw when we arrived was a long line. Why the line? Well it wasn't to buy tickets, we bought the tickets online. It was so the guy at the front counter could sign everyone into their "club" so we could buy drinks. This was a painfully slow process, compounded by the fact that my friend lost her driver's license and had to use her passport. From the musty smell as you enter you know that Dan's Silver Leaf is not gonna exactly be a posh place. This old factory looked like it hasn't been cleaned in since it was a factory. It's a good thing the lights were very dimly lit, I am afraid of what I would find. The crowning achievement was on my trip to the bathroom. I was welcomed by the distinct aroma of urine permeating throughout. It seemed as if they mopped the floor with urine instead of Pinesol. I have had to go in some of the worse truck stops in West Texas and this place was still worse. The few tables available were taken up by the first 20 people who arrived. The sound and the stage was pretty good for up close and personal concert viewing. There also is a patio out back that looked okay. The saving grace of the entire place was the cheap drinks ($3 for a regular and $5 for a double) and the two cute and efficient girls at the bar or else this place would have gotten the dreaded 1 star. Forgive the prologue, but I'll get to why it's relevant, promise. So during the summer between my senior year of high school and my first year of college (you know, during the Truman administration), I spent some time as a board operator for what was then a pretty small Houston talk radio station (which has since gone on to much bigger and better things). They were based at the time in Tomball, northwest of Houston, and had taken over the former space of a AOR station (radio format talk for Album Oriented Rock, or what is now often called 'classic rock' format). Talk format stations are pretty slow business if you're listening to anything other than drive time, and I was running overnights from midnight to six AM. This meant that come about three or four o'clock in the morning, there would be some tax show on, and the entire building smelled like old equipment cleaner, and I had to fight falling asleep at the controls. Enter all the old vinyl they had on the shelves, and I'd sneak into the recording booth sometimes for thirty minutes at a time and listen to Steely Dan records, which beat the hell out of tax talk. Fast forward to this week in Denton, where I finally made a maiden voyage to check out Dan's, a longstanding paragon of hip, where, as luck would have it, an elaborate ten piece band called Naked Lunch was belting out Steely Dan covers so strikingly accurate you'd swear if you closed your eyes that Fagen and Becker themselves were in there working some magic. So I have a soft spot for that material, and I would have loved that band if they were playing in a condemned parking lot. But that doesn't really tell all of the story about why Dan's Silverleaf is flat amazing. I've kept a keen eye on the shows that they book here, and this is clearly a room where a town full of music lovers congregate. That certainly was the case with the most counter-culture cover show I've about ever seen, but it's also the case with any of the up and coming indie acts that pass through this way, and they'll be home to a number of top shows happening during 35 Denton. If you love music and can get there, do it - the room plays shallow but somewhat wide, so even on crowded nights it's hard not to feel close to the stage. Bartenders were quick with a pour, and I mentioned they book like a champ. What else, really, is not to love? read more

Dan's has always been the premier venue for live music especially of the singer-songwriter, folk, country (real country), Texas swing variety but is also well versed in the rock and the roll not to mention an eclectic lineup of weekly residencies. You may hear a Mariachi band, fusion electric wankery, electronic, indie rock and hip hop all in the same week! And maybe even catch a freaky side show, poetry reading and theatrical play in between. Yes the have it all and the sound is usually great albeit a little loud at times. But what would Dan's be without the bar? Ah yes the bar. The concrete turquoise springboard of good times that I've come to love. Recently they've introduced the daily special. Two Dollar Guinness on Mondays for instance, and domestic beer and a cuervo for 3 or 4 bucks on Tuesdays so now, as my friend Joe likes to say, you can't afford not to. It's fun to go to Dan's on a weeknight when not many people are there, but I've also gone to a sold out show at Dan's and it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. The venue has plenty of space while still feeling intimate. The bartenders are really great as well. It's a unique spot that never fails to be a good time. The owner has been known to get on stage and sing... If you can catch him, you're lucky! He's really good. read more

My coworker held her wedding ceremony in the back patio here and it was set up really nicely with small tables as well as bench tables-simple and beautiful. Inside was hung with christmas lights and gave off a laid back, fun vibe. It was a wonderful, short and sweet wedding plus reception. I've only been here once to see Petty Theft. But it was definitely a great place to catch a show. It's not the biggest place in the world, but really, it doesn't matter. There are a number of tables in front of the stage, but you'd definitely have to get there early to score one. The patio outside was very spacious and had plenty of places to sit, there were even TV's outside so you could "watch" the band from the patio. There was definitely a mix of people when I went -- from college kids to boomers -- but that didn't matter because we were all there to have a good time. The drinks were well made and the bartenders were friendly. The next time you know of a band playing at Dan's or even if you just go to check out some good live music, get some friends together and go have some fun at Dan's Silver Leaf! read more

An alternative after visiting, very briefly, a prior bar with a hostile and fearful staff, Dan's was quiet on this Saturday night but full of service. The lone bartender was chilled and attentive, a Lana Del Rey of which she reminded me. The crowd small this night, but the few locals knew hospitality via the song requests. read more

Granted I've only seen one show here (Chris Watson Band), but I can assure you, the sound production is TOP NOTCH at Dan's Silver Leaf. Buy tickets online and get there early if you want to sit in chairs at a table. You can order food at adjacent Rooster's Roadhouse or TX Tapas place and bring in. Great beer selection. Most of the times I've gone, there has been an older crowd (25+), but that's one of the main reasons I like this place. To understand just how cool Dan's is, you need to go to a show there and hang out with Dan (and have a few drinks with him while you're at it). He is, without a doubt, the coolest, sweetest club owner I've ever met. He understands what works and what doesn't. He understands the performer's perspective, which is all too rare in this business. He takes care of his staff as well as his customers. As for some of the other reviews - if you find this place scary, then you're too easily scared and need to stay away (go hang in Uptown Dallas with the other douche bags - where you belong). If the price ain't right, then you're a cheap bastard - stay away and continue to bitch and not support a local business and local music. If you can find cheaper drinks, then good for you - drink up and then come to Dan's for a great show. If it's too loud, then go talk to Jimmy - he'll have some words of wisdom for you. I love Dan's bar and have been sliding into his place since he opened in Denton. We loved going to the Marsha Ball concert, but unfortunately we didn't get our drinks from "KATE". THE bar in denton, texas (i would disagree with calling it dive -- rubber gloves is lovably dive). the thing about this bar that cannot be said about other great establishments in this town (and i doubt anybody would argue really) is that the silver leaf is the bar/venue that attracts a wider variety of people than anywhere else in denton -- it is a community bar, and real mirror on the people that call denton home. musicians, lawyers, carpenters, bureaucrats, writers, professors, librarians, grannies, punk kids, scene kids, jazz kids, ranchers--the mix is crazy and everybody gets along. i love this place and if i had to pick one place in denton to take friends from out-of-town it would be dan's (on 2 occasions i've taken people there and they've decided to move to denton!). read more

I always get talked in to coming here by a friend and always regret it. First off, paying a cover in Denton just always feels quite lame to me. There are enough no cover places where you can catch a good show that it feels like you are paying for the pretentiousness of this bar. Hipsters flock to this place for the live shows and I will admit I have seen a few good ones here, but most nights it sounds like a band recreating the mating calls of whales on stage. If you are gonna play in front of people at least try not to suck. The drinks are way too overpriced here as compared to other places in town. You can't smoke inside, but I don't mind that I guess. On most nights it is too loud to have a conversation with anyone around and the acoustics are terrible! read more
