Really enjoyed getting a churro from here! We got to sit outside and enjoy the ambiance of the Byward market. The staff were friendly. There's an order for 2 filled churros, of which my friend and I took one of each. We went for the dulce de leche sauce (caramelized milk). It only took a few minutes to get our order, and the churros were still very warm. Really good combination of fried dough and sauce that hit the mark. I love churros and have been wanting to try out this place since they opened and finally got to yesterday. I got 2 traditional churros for $5 to share with my mom. They were super crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, not too sweet, with a hint of cinnamon. I'm a fan! The place is over 2 levels and the upstairs was empty when we went, so it was great to sit, relax and chat. The man serving us was really nice. They also serve coffee, other sweets, and sandwiches. Lots of "Day of the Dead" artwork covering the walls. The artwork is also for sale. Washrooms are upstairs and very clean. I'd love to come back and try their other foods. read more

I was in the mood for some sweet treats so I decided to try La Catrina's online ordering and delivery service. I ordered 6 filled churros - dulce de leche and vanilla and 2 slices of tres leches cake. Ordering process was super easy and the food was delivered right on time. The churros were still warm by the time they were delivered! They were crunchy on the outside, plenty of filling on the inside, covered in cinnamon as sugar - soo soo good! I prefer the dulce de leche churros but both are good. As for the cake, I was surprised how delicious it was! It is soaked in milk, and where this might sound different, it worked so well and gave the cake this amazing texture and taste! The vanilla cake with cream cheese icing (I think?) was fresh, fluffy and a delight! Sorry I ate it too fast that I forgot to take a picture! I am already looking forward to my next order! read more

The art and decor makes this lil dessert restaurant so unique and interesting. The churros are also pretty good. I received it warm. It was fresh and not ridiculously overpriced (2 for 5$). I love condensed milk and wish they stuffed even more condensed milk in the churros. I would definitely come back. read more

The one thing I will mention right away: this place is NOT accessible for those with disabilities. However, you could sit at the small tables outside and have them bring you the order. We ordered the 5 small churros and a Mexican hot chocolate (about $16). The churros were amazing, fresh, delicious and warm! The hot chocolate was spot on! After having appetizers at Patty's on Friday, I only needed to walk a few steps to arrive here. The interiors are really well decorated with wall art and frames. You walk downstairs to order, and you can sit on their patio or upstairs. I tried a "regular" churro, one filled churro (with condensed milk), and one specialty churro (with chocolate and almonds). The dough itself is not that flavorful, it seemed to lack much flavour. It was a yummy treat but at about $3-4 for each, was pricy for what it is. Given how many times have been here I can't believe I haven't written them a review yet! This place is unreal. We get churros in Kensington and Toronto but the churro ice cream cup that he makes super fresh and the options that you can get with Nutella are not only creative but they taste far better than they look on Instagram. The owner is equally friendly and nice and patient when it comes to explaining what goes in his food. I always appreciate business owners who have their heart in what they do because the passion always comes through in the food that they serve. Every time I frequent Ottawa and we have a meal in the byward whether we have room or not we always go here to grab our dessert. To be honest we've made trips to the byward just for their coffee and churros as well. One of them was actually a date night!! Also special shout-out to the giant mural I don't know who did it but every time I come I'm in awe of it! Even if you don't know what a churro is and you've never eaten one before don't be shy going and try it! I would rather have this over the standard cheesecake donut pie any day. read more

Quite happy they opened in store. Not any store but smack downtown on Clarence. l've been use to their food truck at every event and having a place to run to is fantastic. Con: Not sure because they are new, but the service was very slow. The line up started to come in and the waiting time to get your dessert was long. People started looking at each other and thinking, this is a little too long for small orders. Maybe their oven didn't work well that day? Luckily one of the guys working there thanked us for waiting. That was appreciated. I hope the next time I visit that location service will be much faster as the churros here are delicious! read more

It's an okay churro place. Staff is kind but when we arrived on a Tuesday around 8 pm there wasn't much left or too many choices. They have very few ice creams. The churros aren't that special but the atmosphere is okay. The churros are given with the dulce de lèche on the side. It's not inside so you have to dip it on the sauce they provide. It comes with ice cream but it's not that great. They have some purses that they sell but they are made out of plastic and too expensive. Experience ok but staff kind. Atmosphere as mentioned is nice. You'll see the photos. read more

This was an amazing end to our awesome day. We had just realized the little crêpe place in the Byward Market we were planning on for dinner was closed and I had had my heart set on a crêpe and I thought no food could make that disappointment up to me....but alas, we stumbled upon the AMAZING churros (and sandwiches!) of la Catrina!! I have to admit, having lived in Spain, I was hesitant when the lovely owner told me hers were better....but she was RIGHT! The four of us highly recommend everyone add la Catrina's churros to their "must-eat" list for Ottawa. We will certainly return there whenever we visit-and I will tell my students about it for our future school trips! read more

I love the number of fun variations on churros that they offer plus the variety across the rest of the menu. The churros themselves are great, but I can't help but feel that their prices are just a little too high for what they offer. I also find that the area where you order is a bit too small and uncomfortable. Otherwise, the restaurant itself is nice and the staff is usually friendly if not a bit disinterested. Unimpressed. I walked in and it smelled like oil, and the churros tasted like oil. Ordered hot chocolate and a variety of churros. The hot chocolate was so thin, and barely tasted like chocolate, and I could taste some cinnamon that they added which would have been nice if they actually made hot chocolate. Of the churros I ordered, the best was the key lime, but again, the churro tasted like oil. For $6 for two filled churros, I would not recommend. read more

This is a great little family owned restaurant in the byward market. Unfortunately it is not easily accessible for those with strollers or walking devices. The food here is wonderful, I came here with my partner and we tried the churros, dulce de leche cheesecake, hibiscus tea and a latte. All were great, however the tea was a bit too sweet and they forgot about our latte and had to be reminded. Not really a problem but make sure to follow up on your orders. The people who work here are incredibly nice and its clear that they care about their food. This place has lots of outlets and is a nice area to study. They don't mind if you stick around with your work and don't hassle you to leave. La Catrina would also be a cute place for a date as there are two levels and the upper level is quieter and more intimate. Even if you don't like your date, you will like the food. read more
