Of all the venues to see a concert in DC, DAR Constitution Hall is probably my least favorite. I've seen Death Cab, Bloc Party and now Snow Patrol here. All have been great shows, but I always leave thinking that it would have been even better somewhere else (like 9:30 or even Merriweather). One of the main reasons I hate going to a show here is because I have to deal with Ticketmaster and their ridiculous fees. I'm sorry but it shouldn't cost me $4 to print my own damn ticket. I won't go off in an entire rant because I know it's an issue for everyone, but it makes me mad every time. It's unclear to me what their policy on photography is. Upon entering, there is a sign saying no photography. I brought my point and shoot with me and had no trouble with security at the bag checkpoint. Okay, so maybe they only mean professional photographers? But then, later in the show, I see this girl running up and down the aisle with her Nikon DSLR attached to her neck. WTF? If we had been at 9:30, they'd have already taken action and she wouldn't be taking photos like that. Probably a non-issue for most, but this really irked me all night. As for the space, well, it's nice but even as a somewhat petite person, I find the seats to be way cramped. As I sat in my designated seat waiting for the Plain White T's to finish, the person assigned next to me arrived. Imagine to my not-really-delight a person 3x as big as me trying to squeeze in her seat. Yeah, my already small space just got even smaller. Thankfully, no one came to sit on the left, so I was able to move down (and I think she was grateful, too) so it ended up alright...but yeah. Those seats...not a whole lot of space. read more

Saw The Head and the Heart here on Saturday. The show was phenomenal, though the experience was only decent. The venue is all seats - a good amount on the floor, some boxes, and an upper level. There's a pretty good view everywhere except for the upper level seats immediately to the left and right of the stage (where we sat). There, the view gets obstructed by sound equipment. A bunch of seats were left unfilled, so we were able to sneak into a box, which greatly improved the view. That being said, the EQ was almost comically bad throughout the show, to the point where I often couldn't tell what the words being sung were. No matter where you sit, the experience isn't really interactive, which is what I prefer in a concert/venue. Ushers are super helpful and were respectful to my boyfriend and me while we tried to find our seats. We didn't mess with the concessions/bar area, although we heard people complaining about the wait for drinks between acts. Parking is definitely tough - most garages are at least a half-mile walk away, and street parking is sometimes difficult to find. The DAR website suggests Colonial Parking on G St. NW, but it was closed the night of our show. read more

I love this place. And yes, I'm a little biased, but here's why: I've only ever gone to hear the United States Navy Band play their annual holiday concert. They typically hold a Saturday evening and a Sunday afternoon concert. The concert is always kid-friendly and Santa makes an appearance at the end of the show. But if you are a classical music lover and enjoy holiday music, you will definitely be entertained throughout the entire show. The "Sea Chanters" or chorus also performs along with the band during several of the pieces. Anyway, besides my love for the show, I think the concert hall is pretty awesome. I can't speak for the orchestra seats, but I'd stay away from sitting in the first few rows. It'd be like sitting in the first rows in the movie theater. Alright, Dane was pretty good. He has a couple decent comedians ahead of him for this show, too. Facilities are clean, parking is surprisingly viable for DC, and overall we had a good time. Security could tighten up, tho. Some drumk dude came up and sat on annelderly lady. This actually happened. Security came over and said, "This gentleman?" We were shocked they did nothing other than look at him. They were more mad at me for taking that picture is there! Anyhow, I offered politely to shoot the five with this fella before he finally rolled out. Drinks are hella expensive, but no shock at a show, right? The first time at this place I was with my grandmother who uses a walker. The area that we could drop her close through a handicap door we were told cars shouldn't pull up because of the pedestrian foot traffic. There was no way my grandmother could walk up the steep hill to get to the door though. So smiled and still proceeded to help her out the car and took the chair/walker out the trunk for her to get to the show. We saw Keyshia Cole and Cedric the Entertainer. We were here for Russell Peters (February 2) last week, and although the venue is gorgeous, we had a terrible experience with the staff and security there. Right when I walked through the door and had only taken 2 steps into the venue from walking a few blocks through the snow, I was stopped by a bouncer who rudely demanded to see our tickets. While we sat in our box, and we were interrupted by security THREE TIMES because they asked us to show them our tickets in case we were in the "wrong box." Afterward, I went to use the bathroom, (the ladies bathroom is downstairs) the security guard told me that I wasn't allowed to stand there and wait for my boyfriend while he was using the bathroom because he "has a home to go to too." They sell food and drinks -- but it's cash only, and you're not allowed to bring it inside the venue. The closest parking garage is about 4 blocks away, but you can try your luck with street parking. 1 star for the venue, and 1 star for the somewhat decent pretzel that we snuck into the show. Hopefully I'll have a better experience here when I (finally) have my graduation here in May. read more

What a wonderful intimate venue to see my beloved Script concert! I went here last night and have never been here before. I ended up having a wonderful seat 3 rows back from the stage. Even with it being the 3rd row, I was extremely close. I thoroughly enjoyed the concert. The venue itself is very spacious and by the looks of it can hold a generous amount of people. The interior is beautiful and well kept. I think my only complaint is the men's' restroom is closer than the women's' bathroom and this caused me havoc when I had to stand in line for longer than I wanted. I didn't get anything to drink or anything so I can't say anything about the pricing of beverages. I can say the box office/will call is on the other side of the building than from the main entrance where you would present your ticket to enter the venue. Just be aware of that. I've attended a couple graduation ceremonies here, but went to the first "show" a couple weeks ago. It's a very nice, formal and upper class venue. The bar area is cash only, so bring some or wait in line for the ATM. There is a parlor eque area below the venue to eat and sit and lounge. Sound probably isn't the highest quality, but still good enough. For the most part, you can see wherever your seat is. read more

Ew.. so saw the Chris rock show here last night and can't tell you how much I hated this venue. The seats were so tight that we all had to sit sideways because they were so close and there was no leg space. Oh dear.. this was a terrible place to have a show and I really wish performers would stop already. Please force these venues to update something. We went to the men's room and it was covered in an inch of water. Ewwww. Two sinks out of 5 were working. One hand dryer out of 2 were working. I mean really. How did this place open.. Dear God. This place is old and broken and instead of updating and repairing it.. it's was like no one cared. It was sad and the experience was mad worse by the venue. Aye yi yi!!!! This venue is just ok IMO. I went for a concert a few weeks back. The sound system was HOR.RO.BLE!!! I cannot even get into the promoters or concert performers because they aren't a reflection of the venue. Nevertheless... not sure if it's like this for every show...but there are about 5 or more different entrances into this venue. I walked up to one door and was told I need to enter through another set of doors on whatever name street she said. That was a block away...I get to that door and the line is hanging out the door...very tight!!!! The inside of the view is cool. It definitely looks like a hall. The balcony seating is very steep. The box seats are very tight as well. I believe a box sits 4 people. But comfortably it should seat only 2. Some of the ushers...seemed like most of them were new. They walked people to the wrong seats...smh I was just disgusted overall. Needless to say, I wouldn't dare run to any show of any form featured at this venue any time soon. The parking was ok. I thought it would be difficult. But street parking on a Saturday after 6pm...wasn't a headache at all. Where I parked was about 2 blocks away from the venue. And the parking was free :) The restrooms...only a hand full. Not a good first experience. Go at your own risk. read more

I enjoy this place. I have attended lots of events here. I have sat up close, in the upper seats and in the orchestra area. The sound is great. Parking can be tricky. I would suggest taking metro and walking. You can see the White House and the Elipse after a performance. The area is pretty in the evening. read more

My friend and I came here on a Friday for the Valentine's Day soul jam. I'm 30, but I'm old school. I love the oldies but goodies. We seen the stylistics, emotions, delfonics, blue majic and the Manhattans. Overall I would say it was a good show. Blue majic and the stylistics did they thing. The drinks there are expensive. But that's something to expect when going to different events. My friend and I got a double shot of Bombay with tonic, our drinks were $20 a piece. In addition they put the drinks in a tiny plastic cup. LOL we tried to stretch that drink for the whole show. But my friend ended up getting us another drink. He didn't do the double shots, those were $10 a piece. But they were still in tiny cups. They have a picture booth on the lower level. It was extremely crowded during the show and after. So if you want to take a pic, just prepare to stand in the line. Oh and they don't check your purse, ask you to remove your hat, or have a certain dress code. We saw a great Latin show on Friday night. Drinks are pricey and you can only order two so basically everyone your party that is drinking will have to go get their own. Not great. Good folks helping everyone find their seats. Good bartenders. You can get doubles but they will be 24 dollars, be aware. At the end of the show we were waiting for our female members to leave the bathroom and the "bouncers" started yelling. Really yelling, "Get out of the venue. We are closed. We have to move equipment get out of the building." I explained that we had some of our party on the bathroom and we still were accosted to leave the area. This was less than ten minutes after the last set. It was the rudest that I have ever been treated. I invited guests from out town and they were shocked. It was reprehensible and simply rude. Someone yelling "I want to go home, get out" is inexcusable. I am finding this to be typical DC HOSPITALITY which is to say no hospitality. Please fix this. read more

Hunh. People don't like Constitution Hall? {{head scratch}} I do. While I agree with Cole C. that it's a bit hard to get past DAR-the-organization's morally shady history, Constitution Hall the venue is a heck of a place to catch a show. Not to mention DAR *has* worked hard over the last 30 years or so to redefine itself as more inclusive and philanthropic. It's clean and pretty. The auditorium itself is simple, with sophisticated, understated décor. It thinks it's highbrow. I saw a great version of "Aida" when the WNO was here for a season for whatever reason. And the artists this venue attracts are really diverse. I've caught Robin Williams to Wilco, Belle & Sebastian to Down from the Mountain, Jimmy Fallon to Interpol. Its seats are comfortable. And velvety. And my inner senior citizen appreciates that it's actually considered cool to sit quietly and enjoy the show. The patellas are grateful. [Sure, there are exceptions. Mary J. Blige was an entertaining, raucous dance party with everyone on their feet from open to encore, and Enrique Iglesias had girls jumping up and down in a breathless uproar...whatever, you *wish* you'd seen the Latin Stallion in his knit beanie and skin-hugging undershirt. OK, does it make it better if I tell you the tickets were totally free because a friend worked in the DAR archives and got comped tickets to all the shows? Yes, it does.] There's hardly a bad seat in the house. Sure, there are less desirable ones. But hardly a *bad* one. Beefs? Yeah, I've got some. One bathroom, and woe is you if your seat isn't near it, cuz you'll be walking for 10 minutes to get there; concessions -- I guess predictably -- are limited and absurdly expensive; the Hall's location isn't immediately accessible by public transit, and parking is a problem; ticket prices can be pretty hefty. This is the only music venue in the entire WORLD that understands a girl's bathroom needs. Three cheers to Constitution Hall for having like a HUNDRED stalls in the women's bathroom. For my high school graduation, Damien Rice and Death Cab concerts, I have never had to wait to go to the bathroom. (But what's up with the $1 bathroom fee, Ticketmaster?) Drawbacks, as others have mentioned, are lack of Metro accessibility and lack of dining options around the area (Potbelly's is your best bet). But other than that, this is a beautiful place to catch your favorite band or get yourself graduated if you're a MoCo kid like me! :D read more

Whether you enjoy your experience at DAR probably is completely dependent on what type of show you are viewing. This is a perfectly acceptable venue for a comedy show or possibly a band or orchestra that wouldn't lead to people dancing. This was a terrible venue for an Interpol show. Why? When I'm listening to Interpol, I don't want to just sit on my ass or stand stone-faced like an omniscient pseudo-hipster who most assuredly will state directly after their best hour long impression of coming face-to-face with the Medusa that it was the greatest show they have ever seen. No, I don't want to do any of those things. I want to move around, I want to let the music flow through my veins and my body, and I want to let that feeling take over me. Instead, I had to sit in my seat and watch Interpol in a ridiculously formal atmosphere. I don't have any major issues with the acoustics and at least on this night there was solid work with the lights, but other aspects of the DAR experience were a bit underwhelming as well. For example, I wasn't too thrilled about the cash only bar carrying wine and shit American domestics. Seriously? This is an Interpol show. Know your audience. Oh wait, they DO know their audience. The eclectic cast of patrons seemed misplaced; it was like a row of clueless executives posing in courtside basketball seats interspersed with former soccer moms taking their kids to their first concert coupled with polo shirts and button downs AT THE FREAKIN' INTERPOL CONCERT!!!! What the hell? This isn't the Dave Matthews Band or Yonder Mountain String Band. Anyhow, despite the venue, Interpol was fun to watch. Still, I think I'll take a rain check the next time any band that requires their crowds to move shows up at this venue. Definitely would go back for a more standstill band or for other styles of performance art. read more

Came here recently for a comedy show. It was a great show. We were higher up as far as seating but we still got a great view of the stage. This place is aging and in need of a remodel. Also, the bathrooms were dirty. The drinks were very pricy. I wish they had food vendors with a healthy option. Not sure what they usually have for other shows but the night I went, they only had fried wings, fried shrimp, and fries. I am watching what I eat so I couldn't even eat there. I cut corners, walk through sketchy alleys, and know the best exit out of every metro station. Often I'm commended for my efficiency, but let's clear something up right here: I like the easy way which is mistaken for efficacy. And the easy way usually correlates with the lazy way. While I can usually play off my lackadaisical attitude as being efficient, there is one snare in my productive looking shield: concerts. You know why? Because you have to stand for hours. I enjoy standing during the concert and dancing along, but you know when I don't like standing? Any time music isn't playing. So yeah, have your beef about the sound quality, layout, or whatever else, but my butt will be in the comfy chair having a grand ol' time at the concerts here. You'll find me in the upper balconies where I can sit with an excellent view due to the stadium seating and remain blissfully seated for as long as I want and still see everything. read more

If it weren't for the strikingly large number of terrible venues in DC, I'd be giving Constitution Hall two stars. I don't really like the place due mostly to retarded seating. The hall has two saving graces though, so lets start with the good: 1.) Its a beautiful building. 2.) Its metro-accessible, thus eliminating the frequent problem of concert traffic & travel. But now for the problems: Seating: Apparently this building's designer didn't consider the stage an important enough asset to warrant pointing all the seats toward it. I think less than 1/2 of the seats face the stage. If you're sitting on a wing, you'll be facing the crowd. Be prepared for a sore back and stiff neck. Even short shows here can be hard to watch from the sides. Layout: There are lots of places to buy drinks and swag and such but the lines block the only ways in and out of the building and concert area. There's also a lower 'lounge' area that should be avoided on any busy night. Getting in & out of that space is a huge hassle. Being stuck in a crowded line underground is simply not fun. The bathrooms are a nightmare to get to, and the one easy access one in the building's front often has a security guard telling people to use a different one (for reasons unknown). Entering/exiting: The building is actually well equipped with entrances and exits, it's just that most of them are closed and off limits. You'll most likely have to forgo the closest exit and shove your way past a crowd of people trying to buy drinks or tee shirts in order to get out. I guess DAR Constitution Hall is a mixed bag. If you can get floor seats, it's one of the better spots in the city to see a show. It could be a lot better, but compared to places like Nissan Pavilion and Merriweather, DAR Constitution Hall is freaking awesome. read more

I would never see a non-classical concert here again, not unless I had fantastic seats. Megatron screens aren't standard equipment for shows, even though it's sorely needed. Neck pains and leg pains-- once one person stands up, people behind them have to stand up, and if they're tall you're screwed because of seating. Plus, how can one properly rock out? And yes, I almost got kicked out of this venue for unsafe behavior, but that's neither here nor there... if I was really bitter about it I wouldn't even give them an extra star for nice acoustics. Cash-only drink stations on either side of the main entrance lobby, separated by swag tables. I'm similarly unclear about the photography rule that doesn't seem to be enforced once you're past the lobby area, but it didn't stop me from smuggling in a point-and-shoot camera in my bra. Thank god I saw a show at DAR last night, or else my review would have to be of my high school graduation, which took place in '01 and was excruciating. I went with my friend Anne to see Ra Ra Riot and Cold War Kids open for Death Cab. The walk from the Metro was about 10 minutes, not bad at all, and the surroundings were historic and pretty. The show was scheduled to start at 7. We arrived five minutes late, so I wasn't too surprised to hear Ra Ra Riot already playing as we took our seats in the upper left balcony. They looked and sounded excellent, as did Cold War Kids, so the acoustics are a-okay in my book. DC sounded a little off, but I'm not going to blame the Hall for that. As soon as Death Cab took the stage I was grateful we hadn't gotten "better" seats; about five people stood up in the orchestra section, which of course started a domino effect as the people behind them struggled to see the stage. If I'm going to buy a ticket for a seated show, I expect to stay seated, and you can bet I would have been grumpy about being forced to stand. You can't really dance at DAR without banging your knees on the chair in front of you, anyway. Minor, personal peeve: for one song, a spotlight on the stage was rotated in the direction of our balcony and aimed DIRECTLY at my face. I am not making this up: I had to take sunglasses from my purse and put them on, even though the rest of the room was pitch black and Anne was cracking up. On the plus side, the transitions between bands were the quickest I've seen in a lifetime of concerts with openers; fifteen minutes and the instruments were switched out and tuned, ready to go. read more

I don't like to see shows here (peep earlier review) so my expectations are already low, and even though my show-going is artist-driven, not venue-driven, I've still gotta demote DAR to one star. Closing the bar at 10 p.m. was the nail in the coffin. The acoustics are great, it's a gorgeous venue, etc., but the staff runs on bitch mode 24/7 AND YOU CAN NEVER GET A DRINK. I swear these bitches are PMSing four weeks a month, even though most of them appear to be in the age group that is enduring what my grandma calls "that time of life." Again I was seeing a more rowdy act (the Pixies) and since they changed my life when I was 16 I could have been watching the show in a port-a-potty and loved it, but DAR needs to work out its bar woes pronto. read more

An incredibly beautiful concert venue! It's not too small or too big and I think any seat in the house has a good view. I recently went here for John Legend's concert last Wednesday. I loved it here and would go here again for another concert. I have not experienced what the bar had to offer or how prices are but, like all concert venues, I'm sure drinks are expensive. I can't speak of women's bathroom lines either because I did not use it while I was there. What I'm trying to say is...I didn't buy any alcoholic drinks because alcohol makes me pee like there's no tomorrow and I didn't want to have to get up during the concert and miss out on John Legend's sexy voice!! (ahh, I feel better now.) If you get a chance, you should definitely watch a show/concert here. You won't regret it. Not entirely sure of the value of reviewing this place, I mean come on, if your favorite band is in town and playing here are you really going to say: " Hmm, I must check out what yelpers think of the venue before I get my ticket." I have seen Morrissey here, which was fantastic. But frankly, Morrissey could play in a Chuck-e-Cheese's with nothing but my four year old's plastic voice amplifier and I would still love it. I also saw Kathy Griffin here last night, which sucked. And believe me, Kathy Griffin could be the half time entertainment at a European Cup Final between Leeds United and Celtic and I would still think she sucked. OK venue for a band you like, crap venue for a comedian, if you don't like the band - or the comedian - what the hell are you doing here because it is a crap hole. * Feels you should be watching gymnastics or a high school basketball game. This is a great place to see a live show because you can see the stage from anywhere. It's still relatively intimate and I definitely prefer it to the Verizon Center noise. I totally agree with Angela on the choice of seats depending on what kind of show it is. It's a nice location in that its downtown and its in a safe area, but there is NOTHING around it. No bars, restaurants, or anything, which is kind of pain. If you want to get drinks before hand its hard to find anything great within close walking distance. They serve beer inside before the show, but you can't bring it in with you, which is a downer. I like my beer while watching the show, not having to chug it in the hallway. read more

I have seen a number of shows here and just recently saw Damien Rice -- which prompted me to write a review. Great venue -- somewhat intimate -- I think the best seats tend to be the boxes. Sound is decent, but feels a little larger than this place actually is if that makes sense..... No parking, no restaurants -- and a pain when they shut down the ellipse to the south of the White House -- so you can't walk across if you have eaten around 12 and Penn area. Damien Rice was great -- no opening act and he played for less than 90 mins -- but it was a great show. read more

This is a TERRIBLE venue to see an Indie Band. It is really unfortunate when bands get too big for 9:30 club that their only real option in or around DC (aside from outdoor pavilions or Verizon Center) is to head to DAR. If you're a fan of 9:30 club - you probably like the intimate feel of the space, the general admission format, and the easy access to several bars that actually serve a decent selection of beer! DAR is the antithesis of this. Sitting down just doesn't feel right when you're seeing someone like Vampire Weekend or Avett Brothers. Seems to suck the energy out of the space. As far as DRINKS are concerned -- don't even bother. The lines for a beer are UNBELIEVABLE. If you're lucky enough to get a drink (or should I say crazy enough to stand in the line)- expect Bud Light to be your most exotic choice and be sure to do like everyone else does and be prepared to Double Fist - because you WON'T want to stand in that line twice. The only reason I'll give the places 2 stars is that the sound system is decent. Definitely prefer to spend my show $$ at 9:30 or Black Cat and get really sad when my Indie acts start getting too big because I know their next step is gonna be this place or Verizon.... Oh - one more tip - when booking seats in a BOX -- be aware: each box has 5 chairs in it and you are seated first come / first serve (General Admission within the Box) - so if you have a Box Seat -get there early to get the better seat. Also - BOX 39 - has the Sound Board right next to it and can lead to some limited views for the folks positioned in the back of it.... DAR REALLY should consider making that box only 3 or 4 chairs... read more

Attended Russell Peters Friday night stand show in October 2014. The venue had plenty of seats with many entrances / exits. The staff was friendly and helpful directing us to our seats. Multiple cash bars were located throughout the DAR with average prices. We sat in row E towards the middle of the stage. As a result we had a lively experience as Russell Peters made fun of folks right next to us! Fortunately we were not picked on and enjoyed the light hearted jokes on others. Based on this experience I would be willing to attend another show at the Dar. read more

The venue is nice and well kept despite it's age. The place could use some updates though. Seats are crazy small and in a society of Americans where obesity is rampant it's easy to get squished. Prices for things are ridiculous. $4 for a bottle of water? $3 for a bag of chips? $10 for a bud light lime. It's crazy expensive. Orchestra seats are the worse. Dunno why people pay for it when your have to dodge between heads. read more

I went to the DAR Constitution Hall for the first time this evening, and it was QUITE the experience! If you're a fan of the DC concert scene you are probably aware of the different kinds of venues that exist ranging from the infamous 9:30 Club to the oldie, but goodie of the Black Cat, and the enormity of the Verizon Center. And somehow, DAR Constitution Hall provides a WONDERFUL setting in terms of seating, sound, and stage that you can't find anywhere else. Specifically, I went for The Lumineers concert which is more of a folkie band so there was a good amount of foot stomping, clapping and singing along. Some were so bold as to dance! (NO WAY!) So, it was a refreshing venue to find myself in while enjoying some great music. There were bars on both the top and basement levels that were cash only bars serving what looked like your basic beer, wine, and some liquor. Generally, the prices were moderate (a beer was $6.50 for a Stella. Water bottles were $3. They had some food options - most people had grabbed the large pretzels or french fries. The only issue here was the LINES... for days. Between my friend and I it took us about 30-45 minutes to collectively get to the ATM to get cash and then make it through the bar line. I'd particularly recommend it for the price - I paid about $46 after fees to pick up tickets at will call and we had orchestra seats on the floor. When all is said and done I really did enjoy this show and the venue! You'll have to check it out! read more
