I went to two morning classes (6am). First was taught by Jake, other was taught by Zack. The class was phenomenal, great instruction and very friendly classmates. I love this academy. I've tried 4 academies in Denver and I decided to join dark horse combat after one class. This is a fantastic gym for Brazlian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, and MMA classes. The schedule is packed with classes for all different schedules. The environment is extremely welcoming and supportive with a great mix of all backgrounds, ages, men, and women. I have always considered myself to be in decent shape and wary of my own conditioning. However, since starting the Jiu Jitsu program at Dark Horse, I am now in the best shape of my life by far. read more

I visited Alchemy while on a conference, and it was a truly wonderful experience. Jason was a superb teacher who really took the time to give me feedback on how I could improve the technique we were working on that class. I was made to feel welcome by both students and instructors from the very beginning, and that positivity followed throughout the entire class. While I was only there for two hours, I felt that I took away a few solid foundational lessons and I wished I had been able to be in Denver for longer to attend multiple sessions. One piece of advice for travellers is to bring a water bottle; the altitude of the city left me gasping for breath in a way I had never experienced before. Jason was kind enough to notice my struggle and offered me one, but I should have know better myself. Fantastic gym, and if I lived in Denver I could not imagine a better place to train, especially as a beginner. read more

This place is awesome! Everyone I've met is so friendly and approachable. The instructors or professors really demonstrate the technique being taught in an easy to follow manor with plenty of direct feedback. All questions are welcomed at any belt level with no eye rolling or ego. Everyone here cares about the person next to them in class and it shows. In Denver for work and stopped by Dark Horse - super happy I did! The Intermediate class had a good progression of drills that were all relevant to training and also helped warm up at the same time. The 5x5 porrada time is legit but also not anything crazy. For context, I'm a small female blue belt and I felt very welcomed and not ever worried about my safety or anything - just awesome jiujitsu! The building was easy to find, changing room is sizeable and 2 bathrooms as well. I'm from a small gym so I felt comfortable in the space, which was just right for about 8ish pairs. All in all great experience and highly recommend if you're in the area! read more

Great coaches, good for beginners and advanced level

I travel a lot for work and am picky about my jiu jitsu gyms and Dark Horse was amazing! Really an awesome gym with a great group of people and a wonderful instructor. He was super kind in giving me attention and direction even though I was just passing through! The students there were super friendly. No machismo and injuries. Very friendly and humble. I cant recommend this place enough! If your looking at gyms to train at this is a great place with great people, if your looking at gyms considering the start of your journey then I wish you luck in your searching and I hope you step on the mats soon. I walked in on 12/10/15 hoping to get control of my health. I wasn't sure what to expect and I didn't know anything about BJJ but I was welcomed in and have been training now for 7 months. BJJ has taught me that disciplines stack on top of one another and create strong discipline that can change your life. In order for me to get better at this game I had to improve the person I was. I walked in weighing 225lbs and just 7 months later I weigh 170lbs! that's a loss of 55lbs and I feel the difference, I can see the difference and so can my friends and family. I'm not just healthier I'm more confident, more energized, more focused and sure... even happier. With the help of coach Jason and Professor Charles I am in the best shape of my life. They would both say that it was me and not them but the truth is that it was them, the gym, my teammates and of coarse myself. I took a 20 year hiatus from practicing martial arts, this place was the perfect spot to pick back up! Each and every coach and professor will take the time to find out your name and what brings you through the door. I've been training for about 9 months now and literally cannot believe the technique that I have learned that allows me to wipe the floor with a beginner, and how much farther there is to go when I get continually humbled by higher belts.
