I was looking for gluten free pizza in Riverhead and found Dark Horse instead. What an unexpected surprise. It's rare to find a restaurant with both good food and service but Dark Horse has both. The Kobe beef burger and the gluten free chicken pasta were amazing. The burger was season perfectly and the pasta was delicious. The gluten blondie with ice cream and caramel is my new favorite dessert. The amazing service was provided by our waitress Jamie. Everything dish she recommended was as good as she promised. Even though I live over an hour away, I plan to make the trip again soon with friends. Dark Horse is truly a hidden gem! read more

I have to say the experience was just ok - service was fine, food was pretty good, dining area a bit awkward and boxy. But the problem was that it was expensive - and I'm okay with that if the dining experience is worth the price. We were in town for business and ate at several higher end restaurants. If you want to experience great local Long Island food then this place is for you. Dark horse features Long Island micro brews on tap, local Long Island wines, and fresh from the farm stand to the table vegetables. It's as local and fresh as it's gets and it shows in the food. I've never been let down with a meal here. The short ribs are to die for. We had Ross as out waiter and he was great. He absolutely enhanced our dining experience. This place is a must go. read more

Really liked this place. It is very attractive (we didn't know there was an interesting back entry, I guess we missed something). Service was fast and friendly. I had the lentils with rice and mango chutney which was delicious. My husband had apple squash soup which he really liked. The vegetarian chile was a bit spicy for him (although it was quite mild, as the menu stated) so he only ate about half. The waitress asked if it was okay, and then without asking didn't charge for it, which was very nice. Cornbread was good also. The dark horse has a very nice atmosphere located on the corner of main street. The staff is top notch and we'll trained. I enjoyed a delicious Moscow mule and noted several other interesting drink options. The food however was not that impressive to me. I had a local fish dish which was under seasoned and rather boring. The vegetable sides were pretty interesting though. My wife had a seared ahi tuna dish which was pretty decent. We shared an apple cobbler for desert which was decent. Overall I'd say it was a very enjoyable night, but there are places with better food in the area. read more

Entered through the unique Rear entrance as recommended by some other folks and we were seated amidst rustic decor (cattails & a very elevated fireplace most memorably) on some questionable chairs. The couple of staff members with which we interacted were friendly on a nice Sunday afternoon, even after we presented out restaurant.com cert. Unfortunately the list of what they didn't have was far longer than the specials (they read them both to you). While I appreciate the transparency and this approach is arguably superior to us asking for all of them and none being available, but not a promising start (perhaps they should've omitted that just like the lackluster Times review from their site). Sandy was used as the scapegoat as is so common these days - I can empathize with that especially given the reports of Main Street post-storm, but Christie C seemed to have the same experience prior to its landfall. My white bean white pumpkin tomato ragout was far too chunky (after it cooled off), to the point where I, the diner, needed to use a knife for my soup (wh? Fries were night and day, either crunchy or soggy. The side slaw was absolutely assaulted with mayo, to the point where it would've been a better value without it. Post-$10 deduction and plus-auto-applied 20% gratuity, we received the lunch bill for $18.69 along with a random postcard (adorable and very downtown-small-town, I suppose)? With a prominent corner location, I want Dark Horse (and Main Street) to survive, and even thrive, but they threw in the towel on our visit. read more

My girlfriend surprised me with lunch at the Dark Horse for our 5 year anniversary. We both have never been there before. She took me here due to the great reviews on Yelp, it holds up. The place, service and food was amazing. We were sat right away and took our order. We shared the fried calamari which was excellent. Nicole got the chicken sandwich which was very good and I got the burger, loved it. We don't live in the area but we will be back for sure. Our waitress was excellent and Ross was a pleasure. Great food. My love had a cheese burger.. yes i knw in a gf resturant! lol the burger was great on fresh baked bread. I had chinese salad that I did not care for. The waitress was super nice and offered to bring something else but I just ate 1/2 the cheese burger. She took money off our bill which we did not ask her to do. thought that was nice. Bright, clean, happy place good food! everyone seemed to enjoy what they were eating around us. just be sure to read menu carefully! definitely would give this place another go! only complaint is some seats are metal, cold and not too comfy. The waitress was wonderful and accommodating with my son. This is where the good experience ended. My husbands drink was made completely wrong. They forgot to even bring out my salad. My husbands and father in laws lobster rolls (for $29 dollars each) were flavorless and bland. Tasted like canned lobster. When I asked where my salad was the waitress said she was going to get it. Brought out someone else's side salad and was shocked it wasn't my chicken Caesar. Asked for the manager and then he couldn't even come out to us sending get the waitress back out. Said they were comping the salad I never got but it was still in the bill and my husband has to go to the bar to get it fixed. Won't be back. read more

My wife and I visited this restaurant about two years ago when we were in Riverhead to see a concert at the nearby theater. The food was memorable then, so tonight after shopping at the Tanger Outlets, we went back. My wife had the Bay scallops, and I had the duck salad. Both were exceptional. I ordered the French onion soup and half Caesar chicken salad. The soup was lukewarm and chicken was salty. It cost me $29 with a beer. For half the price I have gotten a better salad and soup with a great choice of beers at Jerry and the Mermaid. I think maybe maybe cliffs rendezvous might be another alternative. read more

Went there on a quiet Saturday afternoon with my kids and a friend. We happened to be the only people there during lunch so service was attentive, very friendly and understanding. My son has allergies and they double checked everything with the chef. The decor is modern, beautiful bar that looked new, combination of comfortable booth seats and chairs. Nice corner restaurant with a good sized dining area. Amazingly clean and large bathroom, I should also mention. Now the menu...had a decent "New American" selection, including the bison specials, gluten free options, hot and cold items, sandwiches, and smaller portions from the dinner menu. I found the prices to be a little on the high side but some of their menu options were more interesting than your typical pizza and pasta lunch fare. You're paying more for the ambiance. We ordered the crab cakes, bison burger, Reuben, and chicken sandwiches. The crab cakes (that comes on a bed of seasoned salad) were tasty, bison burger was amazing, and I found my chicken sandwich to be quite juicy and flavorful, but not heavy either. My friends Reuben, however was way too salty; she could barely eat it and had to pull out all the sauerkraut.. They have crispy homemade chips with the sandwiches, but I wouldn't pay extra for the fries. While they were fresh and flavorful, they are not nearly as crispy as I would have liked. I guess it depends on how you like your fries... Cole slaw sides were too small, in the same size cups the ketchup dip for the fries came in!, but still nice and light. Other portions in general were good for lunch. Overall, we had a mostly good experience (except for the over salted Reuben). I'd give it a 3.5 if I could. There was't anything that blew me away but it wasn't bad either and I'd consider going back again without the kids. read more

Pleasant space. Helpful and cheerful staff Ordered four meals on an empty Saturday night; three were inedible. Waitress noticed that one of our three disappointed diners hadn't eaten much. Missed that there were two others. The restaurant proceeded to comp us a seltzer and a coffee for a disappointing entree. I believe they should have done a great deal more! When I called to complain, I got Adam, the manager. He explained that he and the chef were not present at the restaurant on the Saturday evening that we were. Hard to believe that the restaurant's manager and chef are not there on a Saturday night in June in the Hamptons! That being said; he was sympathetic and understood my chagrin. Stopped in before going to Tanger. Amazing gluten free options here. Started with the crab cakes-delish! Shared the Bison Pastrami sandwich and the Beijing Duck Wrap with a friend, both were outstanding.The duck was just the right amount of spicy. I wouldn't have even know that the bread and wrap were gluten-free. Only regret was that we were too stuffed to try the desserts...next time. The waiter was attentive and was able to explain the menu items. I will definitely be back the next time I'm heading out east. read more

This corner restaurant is nicely decorated in the contemporary style. Four of us came for lunch and the place was empty. No problem with the wait servers, attentive, and helpful. One person ordered the lentil soup, which was one of only two available soups, although more were listed on lunch menu. She also had the grill cheese. Soup was very good, grilled cheese sandwich okay. The second and third party ordered the beef burger medium rare. Only one got a medium, the other came well done. That one was returned with emphasis on how cooked it was. Another was brought out and it was raw, or very very rare. Again it went back. On the third attempt it was okay but the others had finished their meal. I ordered the crab cakes served on a bed of tasty corn. Quite good. Management did not charge for the one burger. Nice. I will give this place another try. Who knows what as going on in the kitchen this day. read more

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this restaurant!!!!!! Plenty of vegetarian menu items and everything is super Fresh and delicious! The ambiance is beautiful and the building is also really cool (especially if you come in the back entrance) I'm not a gluten free eater but I think they have a lot to offer in that department as well. Lovely dinner, calm atmosphere. I feel like it's ages since we enjoyed such a nice night out in a white-tablecloth restaurant. The service was outstanding, and the food was very good. We ordered the Merlot Beef and the Club steak because we were in the mood for meat ( and a good red wine), but there were many other tempting and probably healthier choices! Took my wife and kids for lunch recently and the food was less than adequate. The duck confit wrap was overwhelmed with a balsamic reduction and the texture of the wrap was nasty; the duck itself was overcooked and undercooked pieces of duck fat, the size of pencil erasers, were not rendered down enough to flavor the wrap. If you can imagine chewing yarn and pencil erasers in an overwhelmingly nasty balsamic reduction then you may have come close to sharing my experience. The shrimp bisque was 90% cream and had very little shrimp taste; it tasted mostly of salt, cream and oil. My wife's kobe burger was ordered medium and came to her extremely well done. It seemed the burger may have been from the night before and warmed on a flat top. The romaine lettuce overwhelmed the plate and needed to be cut to fit the burger. The tomato slice had a brown spot and a green core and the lower part of the bun was soggy, while the upper part of the bun was stale. The homemade potato chips were not seasoned and stale. The service was good and the hotdogs and fries for our kids were okay! We will not me coming back to dine! read more

Beautiful new decor; In a great corner location right smack in the middle of Riverhead. Went on Saturday night no reservations; plenty of room got seated right away. The menu is interesting; many home made and local items; we were excited about it. First coarse we had two salads; they were dressed perfectly and fresh; one had home made ensalata ricotta cheese which was very nice with a hint of smoke. I was intigued by the menu items. I ordered the lentil-potato stew, with pommes frites & aioli (french fries w/ an herb mayo, the side vegetable which was kale and broccoli rabe; my wife ordered the market fresh fish; that nite it was tile fish and she had the creamed spinach as a side dish. The Lentil-potato stew touted as having parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme; did actually have those; the lentils were I might add to the perfect degree of doneness; yet the base of what tasted like lamb and buffalo stock did not lend itself well to the spices and stew coming off gamey; also would have benefitted from some other vegetables. The kale-broccoli rabe side was perfectly done and quite delicious overcoming the bitterness usually associated with these two vegetables. The pommes frites and aioli were greasy and tasted of old oil; they were not crisp and the aioli was a rather unimaginative herb-hellmans type mix; which is serviceable but not exceptionable. My wife's dish was what was said to be baked tile fish; the tile fish appeared sauteed or broiled perhaps; the buerre blanc was very lemony and lacked a good wine flavor; the fish was past its prime or not handled properly and quite fishy; which tile is not when fresh. Her creamed spinach lacked inspiration and appeared pureed or of frozen spinach; a bit of pernod would have helped or a bit of imagination with it. The price was a bit hamptons for riverhead; but the small $3 side dishes were a nice alternative to the too large $6-8 sides at most hamptons places. The service was adequate; the place is bouncy in acoustics; so it attends to get loud; it would benefit from some sound dampers as there are so many glass elements and flat non-sound-absorbing surfaces. A cool entrance to the rear with old vintage album covers was interesting. I wish them luck but to get to the next level the chef needs to either develop his palate more or translate that palate to each of his line cooks and the service staff needs to be more polished. read more

Nothing special. It was completely empty, albeit the timing (Jan 2nd-guessing everyone is hung over??). Waited almost 10 min before the server even came to the table. Not very friendly. Ordered a dirty martini but they had no olives. ?? Asked about specials because we weren't told about any. Decided on getting the shrimp cocktail and crab cakes for apps. The shrimp were actually warm in an almost disturbing way. Crab cakes were fair but tiny for the price. Ordered the bison burger, specifically stating that I wanted a very pink warm center. It came out well done and overwhelmed by the bun and huge thick chunk of red onion. My boyfriend got the scallop special, which tasted like something you could do at home. Just add a stick of butter. Amazing food! I really enjoyed eating here. The quality and taste of the food was superb and the service was very friendly. Often it is difficult to find a safe gluten free restaurant. I felt very safe eating here. The menu was clear cut about what was, wasn't or could be made gluten free. At this place my dinning guest and I had a full appetizer, entree and dessert (needing no substitutions or omissions for the dishes to be gluten free). Everything was delicious and did not feel/taste like typical gluten free dishes. I can not wait to come back! They have gluten free fried chicken, fried in fryer that has never had gluten in it... enough said :-) read more

The food here is original and delicious. My daughter had the clam chowder, which was a white chowder, but not overly creamy, and really let the clams and bacon shine. My husband had the lunch special of chilled avocado soup and a lobster roll, which was $9, and could have easily sold for over 2x that. Great lobster, fantastic homemade soup. I had the duck confit wrap which was terrific, as were the homemade chips that came with it. Local beer on tap was terrific. The service could do with a bit more spark, but it's a great space with really solid food. We'll be back. read more

This is one of the few restaurants in the area that cater exclusively to gluten free so I really want to like the food here. Been here once before for lunch and it was great. Unfortunately we had a bad experience last week. I had a steak off their specials menu which was awful. Thin and dry and very over cooked. The upsetting thing was the manager's unwillingness to do something about it when we made them aware of it. "Too late for us to go something about it now. Maybe if you had told us earlier.." We chose to eat here because the wait at Tweeds was too long. After sitting down, we never got a cornbread starter and it took about 20 minutes to get our drinks and another 10 for a slice of lime. The Bourbon Horse is just a terrible mixture of borbon and apple cider. We ordered a dozen oysters and only received 11 and again had to wait about 10 minutes to get tobasco sauce. I asked the waitress how their medium rare meat is cooked and she replied "pretty good" I was expecting a color and temperature, not her own taste preference. The lamb chops were decent but the spaghetti and clams dish was too fishy and the clams were too chewy. They cut the spaghetti so you couldn't twirl it, I know some people prefer this but it made it difficult to get any on your fork. read more

After having lunch at Dark Horse with a friend who is gluten intolerant (and who LOVED the menu), I asked about catering. They do it, and they are so good that I will never use anyone else. The food was delicious, and all I had to do was pop things in my oven. Dark Horse has catered any number of dinners for me, and each and every one of them has my guests asking for "doggie bags" or the recipes. I highly recommend them!! read more

We were expecting a lot more. Very disappointing. When we sat down our server went over the menu and explained which dishes they were out of. OK, it's a Friday evening at 7 o'clock and they're out of 2 appetizers and about 4 entree's. Not a good sign. our server (don't remember her name) took our order then after about 5 minutes came back and told me they were out of the steak. Another item not available. So I got the pork instead. She said the chef recommends having it medium but it was very well done. The broccoli didn't have any flavoring to it, just boiled broccoli on a plate. A friend ordered her steak rare and it came out medium, however she did like the sauce on top of the steak. Our servers nails looked like she was working in the garden that day, dirt under her fingernails and her shirt was very wrinkled. Just one person in our party had desert. Key lime pie to go. When we got home it looked like it had been run over. I wouldn't even taste it it looked so bad. He said it was ok, not the best but not the worst key lime pie he has ever had. Would I go back? No. Very disappointing. The only thing I would say we enjoyed was the music. I would go see the singer again, but at a different venue. read more
