Ok, lived out here 30 years, but never got to the Broken Down Valise. Ive moved, and back in the area visiting. I finally got to the Valise, and boy, am I glad I did. What a great little place. Perfect atmosphere, local, cold beer and drinks. I highly recommend stopping here, if youre looking for a casual place to hang your hat, relax and or socialize with others. It fits in the dive bar category, but thats the appeal. read more

Great Dive Pub Let's start with the funny friendly clientele. What a find! Just got off the ferry and was driving into Long Island and we came upon this spot. A real old school pub with rabid older sports fans that aren't afraid to voice their opinion. They have some very good craft beers on tap. Dark wood, dark bar, plenty of character. The Dive Bar that dive bars should be measured against, though is has been cleaned (damn) and (uggh) dusted. Also most of the actual broken down valises that used to hang from the rafters are gone!!! Loss of star for the cleaning and the dusting and the missing valises! Jukebox, barflies, local talent, and almost on the wrong side of the railroad tracks so make sure you stop and have a beer when you get off the LIRR. read more

After 24 years on the North Fork and passing this spot hundreds of times we dropped in for a quick drink tonight. This is the epitome of what an old local pub should be. Dare I say dive bar? With no disrespect intended it is, and one of the best most iconic dive bars at that. This place puts on no pretenses. You step in and feel welcomed, entertained by all the tchotchke hanging about, the genuine local vibe and the warmth of friendly locals. Across from the LIRR station, it probably holds a millions stories of the commuters, locals and visitors who dropped in. Karen, the bar-person, greeted us and immediately made us feel at home, joked how she's seen us walk by and how this was our first drop in. Glad we did, and nice to meet the friendly patrons too. We'll definitely be back , sorry we waited so long. This friendly local place and its patrons is why we love the North Fork. read more

A fun side street pub just around the corner of Love Lane, the main street in the small, quaint, and popular Mattituck Village. This beat up old pub will catch your eye and have you saying "should we go in there?". Sure you should and sit at the bar for some local flavor of the east end's north fork. Cute, dark and pub like a place to get some on tap beer. Bartenders were nice on both visits. BTW I only went in because I was touring around that day with a real European where bars are part of their life. Not the case so much for me.. but I can say it was fun and had its charms. Pretty unique place. Passed it for years and finally went in with friends. Nice barmaid Karen served us drinks while we asked questions about this old musty place that smelled like cigarettes. Local crowd and so much to look at on the walls, ceiling etc. just go for one to experience it. Lol. Dont forget to look up!! read more

This is exactly what a good bar should be! I try to drop in every time I attend an event at nearby North Fork Theater, and this weekend was particularly satisfying...because in addition to delicious draft beer, they offered complimentary generous tasty chicken hero. The fresh sandwich was about a yard long and precut to all you care to take slices. Usually the only non beverage items at this bar are bags of chips etc, so the unexpected treat of real food was very much a plus! Every bar tender there is perfect. Very friendly crowd. read more

Literally right across the street from the Mattituck LIRR platform, this bar is in an ancient looking building that is likely a minimum of 150 years old. We arrived a bit early to eat at the outstanding Iron Skillet restaurant http://www.yelp.com/biz/iron-skillet-restaurant-mattituck and saw this bar with 4 patrons sitting inside. Neil the bartender was a very friendly person, and knew everyone in the bar as during the winter this is a very local place. So yes this did lead to getting the old west saloon feeling when you walked in with everyone in the bar stopping to look at us. But soon after I was talking to everyone in there and felt like I was a local too. So +1 star for the hospitality and small town feeling. I am sure if you go there during the summer it will be nothing like this, so check this place out in the off season. The locals are friendly. read more

Not for the foo foo gang, just a great "townie" HOLE-IN-THE-WALL" bar. Friendly attentive bartenders & patrons. Charming rustic decor plus centrally located between both main roads (just west of tiny Love Lane). Been coming here for over 30 years- faces may change but the Valise is always a good time.
