While on a road trip, as we neared Mount Vernon, we got a hankering for some donuts. Not familiar with the area AT ALL we checked Yelp and found Darren's Donuts. With the high marks (stars), albeit only a few reviews, we detoured over. These were some of the BEST donuts we have ever had. Of course there were so many choices staring at from the glass cases that we had to indulge (heck, we were on vacation)!! The Old Fashions, Jelly Filled and Apple Fritters (to name a few) were saliva generating machinations! Now, the wife likes her Apple Fritter - and she rated this as one of the best ever. It's a small shop, with some seating room. The donut artisan behind the counter was friendly and he also made a mean cup of coffee! We met a nice elderly couple enjoying their treats who were also quite friendly and recommended a place to eat - the Kitty Hawk Cafe. I found Darren's Donuts on Yelp and glad that I stopped by on the way to a meeting. I brought these donuts in for a training session at work and the donuts were a huge hit. The donuts were so soft and delicious, they exceeded my expectations. I wish I lived closer to this place but will definitely stop by whenever I am up in the area again. Also the staff there were super friendly! Make sure to stop by early. I got there at 8AM and their case was half empty. They told us they would have fresh donuts within 5 minutes so we waited but BEWARE if you don't have the time to wait. read more

The other day I had a strong desire for a real donut you know the ones that are freshly prepared daily by a serious maker. So...took to Google, searched Donuts 98273 (Zip Code for Mount Vernon, WA). The review site YELP was top on the list showing Darren's Donuts and clicked on it. After reading the reviews from people from around the country, decided to see if those reviewer knew their donuts. My-oh-my they sure do! Some of the reviewers mentioned that in the am you can get them hot right after coming out of the kitchen. Others mentioned later in the day the selection is not as good, as they sell out. Well my visit was at around 1:30 in the afternoon and it was evident that a lot of donuts had flown off the shelf's, there was still some for me to chose from. Nevertheless, after Kea (Kia) politely served me, sat down to enjoy the donut and apple fritter. In doing so it seemed clear to me that those shelf's would be clear before 6 pm when they close. In one of the photos it shows a glazed doughnut that reads "Melts in your mouth" & it is VERY TRUE!!! Unfortunately I have only had one because I live in the mountains & don't get there early enough so I have to eat what the morning crowd leaves behind. My husband & I are now planning a shopping trip just to get to this doughnut store early so we will be able to have their fresh doughnuts, oh & to do our monthly shopping. I can't believe how opposite an experience I had to the other reviews. I've been three times now and all three times in the early morning I've only had three or four choices of day old donuts that I paid full price for. The establishment itself is dirty and the customer service has been easy to say "bad" all three times. I wish I could've had something pleasant to say about this place. read more

The donut quality is good for sure, but this review is more about the disappointing service. They claim to open at 5am but several times I've been there at 6am and they are either closed or only have day-old donuts to sell at full price. They never answer their phone so calling ahead to place large orders is never an option. Disappointing to say the least given their price point. Darrens makes the best donuts you'll ever find. My favorites are the maple bars (always fresh) and the chocolate glazed/custard filled (Bismarck?). The cinnamon twists are quickly becoming a contender as well. They are often hot when I arrive, and even if they've cooled, they are still much better than any hot light Krispy Kreme or any other donut elsewhere. The owners are very friendly and always happy to see their customers. Great family run shop with wonderful customer service, and exceptional donuts. Darren's has the softest donuts I've ever had. The dough is what makes their donuts amazing, especially if you get one freshly made. I've been to many donut shops in Washington, California, and New York, and Darren's is my favorite by far. Expect a small mom and pop type of store, ran mostly by a husband and wife team. If there's some event going on around town, they tend to sell out. Don't be surprised if you come in and the shelves are mostly empty. read more

A man was boxing up at least a dozen donuts for an order leaving hardly any donuts left in the case. Stopped by Burlington and realized Krispy Kreme was no longer. Found this place by accident at 7 am the other weekend on our drive back from Birch Bay. The twisted donuts were still hot and fresh, soft, sweet and sooo good. I was watching him hand twist it so effortlessly. Kruellers, old fashioned, etc were all delicious. SUPER MEAN DONUT LADY!!! We went to Darren's Donuts today and met the meanest donut lady ever. We were the only people in the store. We get a couple of donuts and then after paying $3.10 and putting a dollar into the tip can, my fiance knocked their cardboard donation coin holder. It spilled the 7 quarters onto the ground. We started to walk to a table (I figured she would pick them up) and when I saw that she was glaring at me I asked "Would you like me to pick them up?" She said yes, and then watched me pick them up and put them on the counter. I asked her if there was someplace I could wash my hands and she said the bathroom. As I walked to the bathroom she looked at my fiance (he has bad knees and is sitting down) and said aren't you going to put the quarters back into the holder. Well, we leave and get into the car with our donuts and then he told me what she said. The donuts were yummy in spite of her, but honestly it would be hard to screw up a donut. Oh yeah, and they didn't have any napkins out anywhere - cutting costs? We were able to laugh about, but I have to say I thought about walking back in and fetching my tip. read more

There are three really tasty donut makers... Krispy Kremes--specifically their hot glazed, Chuck's Donuts in Renton--specificallly their buttermilk and frosted maple pershing, and Darren's Donuts. Now the tiger stripe donut is excellent, especially with the crumbs, and pershings are also excellent. Delicious and really visually appealing! Highly Recommend! read more
