Made a pitstop to Darren's Donuts to grab some donuts. It's nearby COA Mexican Eatery & Tequila. We dropped in on a Sunday afternoon (12:30pm). Good selection of raised, cake and fancy donuts were still available. Prices are reasonable ranging from $1.75 USD to $3.00 USD. - 1/2 dozen ($12.00 USD) - maple old fashioned, maple French cruller, glazed, apple fritter, lemon and raspberry buttermilk. Glaze was light and airy. Cruller was solid. Apple fritter was decent. Least favourite were the buttermilks. Would return to DD for more donuts.

When I pulled up to Darren's Donuts on the afternoon of Wednesday 3 May 2023, the parking lot was packed and my heart dropped. What if they were out of donuts. I looked for parking and went with a spot on a strip neighboring a Mexican restaurant with its windows open. Next, I approached the door. Looking through the glass, my heart bounced back up, did my eyes deceive me or... I opened the door... heart still happy, my eyes did not deceive me, there were no customers in the store AND they still had donuts. Turns out the cars in the parking area were for the nail salon that shares the building with Darren's Donuts. A worker quickly approached and asked what I wanted. I went with the only remaining French cruller option, a maple French cruller. The price was $2.70, I paid with three one dollar bills and tipped the change. It was absolutely delicious. The donut was light and slightly greasy in a good way and the maple flavor was rich and icing not too thin. It marked my first time having a French cruller of any kind and I was satisfied with my experience.

Amazing donuts!! Everything is perfect, the glazes, the size, the fluffy interior....finally the crumb donut of my dreams.

Like most good donuts worth their salt, they run out early, so get their early for the best selection! The maple bar was amazing, soft and sweet and still a little warm. The cake donut, chocolate frosted with chocolate sprinkles, of course, was also tasty. Both were nice and light (in texture, not calories!!). Really easy to get to off of I-5, so swing by and check it out!

I love to visit bakeries when I travel and I hit gold when I found Darren's in Mount Vernon. Absolutely delicious twists, maple bars, and apple fritters. I'm sure all the other doughnuts are just as good. Some believe this is Skagit Valley's BEST home of the doughnut. You won't get an argument out of me.

Yum! Not a fancy store, prob wouldn't have stopped if we just saw the storefront, but the donuts are great!!! Baby bump approved. Pictured Some kind of round custard filled maple topped number. Chocolate frosting was also good. Store was clean.

We were really hoping that we beat the crowds…read morebecause we usually don't go here anymore only because we don't like to wait and wait to be seated and then wait some more. What can I say? We were really hungry and really wanted their food and they have a nice variety on their menu. So we waited. It didn't even seem like there were that many people waiting or on the waiting list. Nonetheless, we waited probably 20 minutes in the entry. They called our name and seated us. They have a lot of tables set up throughout their space. I see there is seating upstairs but not sure when/if they seat up there. Their restrooms are now gender neutral and one toilet. That's nice! There was a changing table in the one I visited. The server came around within about five minutes and when we ordered our food, It took about another 20 to 25 minutes. I had time to shop the whole adjacent store, make a purchase and still waited awhile for our food. This is always a period of time that feels like it takes forever because by now you're starving and have looked at all of their sweets in the display case while in the waiting area and smelled all the cinnamon scented candles and the food being prepared in the kitchen. My Linda's brother-in-law scramble was delicious. I opted for the bacon sprinkled. It didn't seem like 4 dollars worth of bacon and there's plenty of flavor in that scramble otherwise. $23.54 with the bacon sprinkles. My hubby had the country biscuits and gravy, and he said it was good. $17.79. My husband did mention that he was disappointed that the country biscuit and gravy didn't automatically come with their breakfast potatoes. You have to choose- eggs OR potatoes. He ordered a side of breakfast potatoes, and it was a small bowl. $6.50. We shared the French toast and took most of that to go as well as some of the hash. $14.99. It was plain. We both had water to drink and had to ask for a refill. That all came up to $68.47 plus tip. The receipt says, "If you pay cash, your total may be rounded per this location's payment policy." I didn't see what that policy says.

While you're waiting you can go to the shop down the stairs or go to the dessert area right next to the waiting area to get some great desserts. Last time i was there I saw frosted cream cheese sugar cookies, and pies, and more. When you get seated there are so many great food options, lots of options, same with drinks. They are only open until 3:30 pm so be sure to manage time well. And don't expect an empty place, it's usually populated. Tight space, so scoot in those chairs as far as you can. Staff were laid back, and nice. When they're busy make sure to be patient with the staff, they're dealing with tons of other orders as well.

I have had Water Tank Bakery in Burlington bookmarked for awhile and admit being late to the party, so to speak. But this time coming back south from Edison, Bow, Bellingham and Sedro Wooley, I made it a point to visit on 3/28/26. It is located by the Port of Skagit County, with the regional airport, other commercial businesses, and serendipitously next door to Cairnspring Mills. Look for the Fresh Bread signage starting at Higgins Airport Way that shortly leads you to the retail window. The daily offerings are listed on the business website, as well as, the magnet board located below the retail window. After a brief wait, it was my turn and enjoyed my brief conversation with the founder, owner, and head artisan baker, Rachael Grace Sobczak. She mentioned that majority of the baked goods are from a sourdough bread starter and uses local flours from Cairnspring Mills (next door) and Chimacum Valley Grainery (Olympic Peninsula). From the website, it was great to learn that she baked for a decade at Breadfarm in Edison. She was also involved in her graduate studies as a dietician and concurrently with other community projects. A pandemic pivot started the journey to create the successful Water Tank Bakery. I purchased a four pack of roasted garlic parmesan rolls, a four pack of coffee toffee chocolate sandwich cookies, and two lemon raspberry cream cheese polish buns. All of these were outstanding! Water Tank Bakery baked goods are also available via other retailers (listed on website) and at the year round University District Farmers Market in Seattle on Saturdays 9am to 2pm. I was told, however, there's better availability and variety visiting the retail window in Burlington. Worthy detour!
