There's a few things I'm looking for when I have afternoon tea: A reasonable price point, a well structured tea menu, good food, and a nice ambiance. I felt dartealing had all of these major points. The tea sandwiches were particularly impressive as I usually find it drier / less flavorful at most tea houses. The scones came out fresh which was really great. The savory bites (an empanada and a sausage roll) were very yummy. I liked the attention to detail in the aesthetics of the tea tower. Overall, I felt this was a well priced afternoon tea session at a reasonable price point. Service was a bit slow but no problems otherwise and I find most tea places tend to run a bit on the slower side. I purchased some tea that I enjoyed that day and it came in a cute wrapping (it would have made a great gift!). read more

A cozy venue for tea and light brunch. It was a bit hard to locate Dartealing because we didn't see any signs from the outside. The inside is very cute and whimsical, great for a cute brunch with friends. There was also French music in the background. I specifically love the green tea, very light and floral. Location: lost in the middle of nowhere.. difficult parking and not inviting at all. You kind if wonder "where did i land".. The interior decoration is a mix of different furniture and china, probably found in garage sales. Its a different atmosphere and its quirky in its own way. I could see this being a fun experience once because you need to spice up your san francisco experiences but i would not return because its dark and i feel like we are all pretending to have high tea which in a not so elegant place. The staff is nice though and adults can have a fun time for an event. Its about $35 for a tea and some light finger dishes. The tea was good and i like that you can share a pot with a friend. There were also vegetarian options on sandwiches which I appreciated; one of them was very good (egg olive something). I was not fond of the sweets, they were way too sweet to my taste. Where to start... Arrived 7 mins early and were told to wait for our table to be set. This took nearly 15 minutes while two tables that were already set sat empty the whole time we were in the restaurant. Then we waited 45 mins for our food, which is a set menu. Our server never came by to check on us during this wait. When the food arrived our scones were missing and were told they were still in the oven. After another 20 mins we again asked for our scones and when they finally arrived they were still raw in the middle. The food was mediocre. Our server never checked in with us and finally we had to flag down the host and ask for our check, which took another 15 minutes to appear. You can have better tea experiences at other places, I don't recommend Dartealing Lounge at all. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! Two of my girlfriends and I came here after filling out the reservation request form online (highly recommend filling this out!) As with most SF places, there's a lack of parking so definitely avoid driving here yourself. The interior was so lovely and bright and the employees were so kind. The owner walked us through the menu, explaining the teas (they have a lot!), sandwiches, etc. For $37/person, you get the lunch set: 4 types of finger sandwiches 1 tea type per person Empanadas Sausage puffs Scones Marzipan cakes Shortbread cookies Cream puffs Clotted cream & strawberry jam They also accommodate any requests/ allergies! Everything was SO DELICIOUS and adorable. The food was filling and the tea was lovely. The staff was super friendly, always willing to refill tea or water, and there are two clean bathrooms. My friends and I ended up waiting there for a while after paying for our Uber but there was no one rushing us which I really appreciate :) This is a great place to come with friends or your family! My brother and I LOVE tea, and it's our birthday month, so we figured having tea in the city (especially in this weather) was perfect! S E R V I C E: Parking can be tricky. The GPS kept leading us in circles, so that was frustrating. But you can get lucky by taking the parking spots in the front. We were seated right away, and saw how cute everything was inside! It felt like we were having a tea party in Alice in Wonderland. Our server explained the prices of the menu and the different types of teas and pastries. We didn't wait too long for our tea, and then right after our sandwiches and pastries came out. F O O D: I loved how most of the teas were named after Game of Thrones characters and phrases. The tea pots were huge and you're able to get refills of tea. I had Mother Of Dragons for tea, and it had hints of almonds and vanilla. It was amazing! When you are on a days long conference you really learn to cherish your lunch hour. It's a time to catch up with your coworkers, clear your head, and decompress for a few moments. Afternoon teas are usually a few hours long affairs but our determined group decided that we would fit in all the charm, sweets and treats in a sixty minute time period. Dartealing Lounge delivered! I called ahead so they could prep our food ahead of time as we walked over to the restaurant, just a few blocks away from our office. Almost as soon as we sat down we were delivered with overflowing trays of tea sandwiches, crumpets, sausage rolls, quiche and more! It was a sight for the eyes. I went a pot of their signatture darjeeling (the champagne of all teas) and was instantly relaxed. Everything we had was delicious but I was partial to all of their lovely tiny desserts. Both the tea and the food were absolutely delightful. It is sometimes hard for me to separate a wonderful time from the actual business, and I had a spectacular lunch with coworkers here, but I still think this place deserves five stars. Here are the major reasons for this assessment. DECOR - This place is lovely. From the tables to the chairs to the plates, everything is exquisite. If I had a little girl I would want to dress her up and take her here. This place makes me put my pinky up and drink in the daintiest of ways. TEA - The tea is amazing. I love how they name all of them after British television shows. I love Sherlock Holmes so of course I had to go with a tea under that category. I ended up going with The Mind Palace and it was amazing. They brought us big pots of all the tea so we could share, which was super nice of them. FOOD - I didn't do any of the ordering, so I don't know exactly what we ordered, but I adored the scones, the chicken salad puff pastry, and anything that was sweet. Surprisingly the salmon sandwich wasn't my favorite, but I just ate everything else. Tea within walking distance from Union Square? Yes! Dartealing had a wonderful tea. I was very impressed. It's a cute and cozy location that has been around for 12 years. We elected the sweets tray for two but I needed something savory so we added the fish and chips sandwich. When the sweets tray first arrived, I thought it was rather small for the $52 price. But the tastes and variety of the treats was worth it. The cinnamon crumpet was warm with the crunch cinnamon topping. That probably filled a good portion of my hungry tummy. The pumpkin toast was a nice treat as well. We had to share the two scones. One was rose and cardamom -- I am not a fan of fragrant foos so I didn't like this one. But the cranberry orange scone was lovely! Our fish and chips sandwich was so good! The chips were American chips that were made used to help hold together the fish mix. It was hearty and very unique. We were actually full after all of that and took the top portion of the tray home. Actually we ate them two house later during our shopping break! This Dartealing Tea Lounge is just darling! My friends/colleagues and I decided to escape our long bustling day at the conference for some tea and petit fours, and I couldn't have been happier with the experience and I know my colleagues echo that. There was really only one small thing missing I think (Curd/Jelly for the scones), but outside of that the tea was just wonderful. First off, the place is really cute inside. It's such a nice environment and change from the busy hectic San Francisco street outside. The tea selection is good. They have a wide variety and I kinda love that a lot of teas are named after Games Of Thrones, Sherlock Homes, Downtown Abbey and other iconic UK exports. BTW - can't wait for the Downtown Abbey movie! I just hope that it doesn't center around Bates. Fingers crossed. I went with "The Woman" tea, cause I thought it would be funny and ironic. It was a very nice light green tea. Definitely spot on for what I was craving at that point. Since I reserved on a busy holiday season, the two time slots I requested were full; however, there was a spot at 2pm, so I took that one. We arrived fifteen minutes before our reserved time, and the staff directed us to our seats. The ordering is still something to get used to figuring out; this required a little clarification from the staff. There was a dozen selection of sandwiches, and for the Tea for Two, we can choose three types of sandwiches, and two types of teas. This month, the tea selection had some winter themed names in them, so it was fun to read and choose the one we wanted. There was also a winter special afternoon tea set called the Winter Solstice. This one didn't have any sandwiches, but instead had pastries and savory bites. Unfortunately, this cafe didn't offer the Tea for Three, but already assuming this was going to be the result, I ordered the Tea for Two and the Winter Solstice. We ordered the Queen Mary's Secret Service and the tea with peaches and apricots. The teas arrived first, and the staff explained that there was no need to wait for the tea to steep, that has already been done. The drinks were refreshing and filled with new tastes that we haven't tried at home. The leaves were left steeped in the teapots, but the drink didn't turn condensed or tart, which was nice because we took our time slowly drinking the tea while eating. It was a nice touch to also get seconds. :D The sweets came within ten minutes and it was an adorable sight. The small downside is that most of the desserts had to be shared because there was only one scone, a yellow dessert with a creamy center for the Tea for Two, and the Winter Solstice was mostly one dessert/savory bite. Despite that, the desserts were delicious. I liked the strawberry with the cream on the side; the strawberry was sweet! The scone was good too. The sandwiches were tasty! We got one with curry, the lavender honey, and the ham and mustard. My favorite one was the lavender honey sandwich. It seemed odd at first but the lavender created a gentle floral note to the cream cheese. Most of the sweets I enjoyed except for the macarons. They were the sweetest, and I had to tune it down by drinking a whole cup of tea. The reason why I dropped one star was something my relative was frowning about through most of her experience there and the following day: the mismatched teapots, teacups, and saucers. At first impression, the mismatched tea cups and saucers was like seeing a Mad Hatter's tea party. It is appropriate there, but it appeared disorganized in this situation. One of my relative's cup was large that it wasn't fitting in the saucer that was provided. Drinking an owl printed cup on a gold rimmed flower saucer was odd. Also, to my relative's disappointment, most of the cups and plates were brandless. Overall I enjoyed the experience. I might come again for the seasonal desserts. read more

You should definitely make reservation in advance, especially a large group. TEA The tea selections are excellent and very good. We got green tea with jasmine and one with vanilla and one with black tea. They all had fancy names, but I can't remember them. FINGER SANDWICHES I was a bit disappointed. They reminded me of the ham and cheese sandwiches I pack my kids for school lunch. For $35 per person, I expected something a little more creative and unique. I did like the curry chicken and millionaire bacon. The scones and chocolates are good. The kids plates are small for $22, but it was expected. Overall, it was a fun and enjoyable experience. My friend took me out to lunch for my bday belatedly (over 3 months after the fact haha). We went here since for the past couple of birthdays we've been celebrating by getting afternoon tea. They had a great selection of teas. I had a really difficult time selecting one, they all looked so good. I eventually chose 221B Baker, a rooibos with chocolate and floral notes. We got the Hand of the King tea service. (If you couldn't tell, they have a Sherlock Holmes, Game of Thrones, and Downton Abbey theme on their menus which is cute.) The HotK is a little bit of everything, including finger sandwiches, sausage rolls, crumpets, scones, and more. The variety is exactly what I wanted. Unfortunately my friend and I weren't too impressed with the food. We've had much better food at the other afternoon teas we've been to. Dartealing is everything, the soup for your soul, the cure to your heartbreak, the skip in your heart, the song in your step. Dainty crustless finger sandwiches done just right. The bread is perfect, the size is perfect, the filling amounts are perfect. The scones are true to English form, *not* moist and barely sweet so they need the cream and jam to get where they need to be. The clotted cream is exactly that, not the ersatz version many places serve up in the name of clotted cream. Lastly, Pauline is the master of tea blends! I've been to a few different high teas around the world - mostly in my home town of London (and a couple in India) and was excited to take my girlfriend to one in San Francisco. This place is located in gritty SoMa, we parked on a metered spot outside the venue, adjacent to a pool of broken glass and walked in on a sunny Californian Sunday at around noon. Despite every table being reserved, we were the first party to visit. The decor and crockery were a colourful mish mash of different china sets and furniture, not unlike what you'd accumulate if you exclusively collected second hand dining sets. This was more quirky than anything else, but lacked the refinement of the more formal teas elsewhere. The tea menu itself felt pricey at around $35 per person (give or take) for your choice of one tea, a couple of savoury dishes, some finger sandwiches, a scone with cream and some small pastries. Yes, it's cheaper than going to one of the high teas in London but at those, they generally bring more food than you can possibly eat and you have the option of multiple teas. Plus, there's something to be said for the ambience of a 5* hotel versus that of a ground floor restaurant in SoMa... All in all, I'd recommend going once, but maybe not twice. read more

I called to make a reservation and they were incredibly helpful. I explained that we were a little short on time and they suggested that we choose our sandwich options ahead of time and call it in so that they could be working on them while we walked over. That ended up working out perfectly, as our food was ready very shortly after we arrived. There was a group of 5 of us and we chose the Hand of the King tea service. This service comes with select finger sandwiches (one flavor per person in your party), english sausage rolls, crumpets with rum butter, warm scone and royal cream, assortment of petit tea fancies and shortbread, and tea of choice (one per person). Everything was phenomenal! The deserts really shined here as did those. freaking. crumpets! I had never had a crumpet before, so I was pleasantly surprised and immediately addicted. The sandwiches we chose were: Meatball parmesan, curry chicken, smoked salmon, cucumber, and roasted eggplant. I tried the meatball, cucumber, and curry chicken and loved them all. My least favorite may have been the curry chicken but that's just because the curry flavor was intense and a little overpowering. For my tea, I chose "Her Majesty's Secret Service" which I thoroughly enjoyed with cream added! This is going to be a yearly tradition when I come to San Francisco each summer. read more

Absolutely love this place. Came here with a medium group of friends (5-ish people) and were seated at a cute table with a fancy bench. We got 2 platters, with a wide variety of sandwiches, scones, and petits fours - as well as a handful of teas. I wasn't expecting to be impressed, as someone who generally doesn't like sandwiches or scones, but everything was absolutely delicious. The scones were decadent and buttery, and I especially liked the "honey lavender" sandwich - mild, floral, and nothing like I've ever had before. We were on a big time crunch and called them multiple times before our arrival to get their thoughts on if we would make it. Our tower of deliciousness was just as beautiful as it was delicious. I'm a sucker for a cucumber and cream cheese sandwich and their's did not disappoint. The scones were warm and delicious as well as the crumpets! Literally the first time I've seen crumpets with afternoon tea and I loved it. I went with Earl Grey tea (boring I know, but it's my favorite) and it did not disappoint. We all could have eaten the clotted cream with a spoon and they happily gave us more. Very nice place. We came here on a Saturday afternoon, you don't need to call ahead of time in order to make the reservation, we called around 2 PM and got a reservation for 4 PM. Majority of items here are for afternoon tea, so if you're looking for something to eat and probably this is not a good option. Or I should say before you come to the tea place, grab lunch first. One recommendation to the owner, I don't quite like the way they differentiate the $39 menu and the $56 date for two menu. It is supposed to be the same, but actually the plate and the whole setting looks quite different. It is supposed to be cheaper for two people to order the same thing, so in my opinion, it is supposed to be the same. Also it would be better if they offer some more dishes. read more

The savories were very delicious, including the crumpet. The tea felt a bit thin and not hot enough for us. The decor aims for cute, but somehow... didn't quite feel fill the space right -- hard to describe. Just the feeling that it's cute tea-decore over an office space feeling walls... I've been here a number of times since my last review, and I have to knock off a couple of stars. The staff service just irks me. I've returned twice with a large group (8 girls) and then another with a smaller group of 4, and that one chick that works there just deflates the entire experience. She doesn't smile, seems bored, and doesn't support that feeling that makes high tea so special. I've been here a dozen times total, and the food is consistently decent and sometimes very good. Overall, it will be a long while before I ever return. I'd rather invest in a wholesome high tea experience at a few of the other high tea spots in the city, rather than feel bad for ordering, asking questions about the menu, or reminding the staff for refills. read more
