Let me preface that I love afternoon tea places and have visited almost every tea time focused location throughout the bay area. I have visited Dartealing a few times for different occasions and this time, it was for Mother's Day. Making a reservation was a bit more involved than your standard click and submit; it required confirming via text with the owner all the details. You have to submit your request online and then wait for a text and an email. Responding to the email does not confirm your reservation - !! you need to respond to the text. I responded the same day to a text confirming my reservation but as I responded about 2 hours late, someone had already taken my requested timeslot... We were offered the last seating the same day and I accepted within 5 min of receiving the text. I would imagine that if I hadn't, I probably would have lost that booking too. This makes it a rather stressful experience. When we arrived, we were seated after a bit of a wait. Everything was beautifully set up and it wasn't so loud that we couldn't hear ourselves. Unfortunately, that's where the pleasant experience started to go do down. Our tea was confirmed in advance through text but it still took them 30 min to bring them out. Our food, on the other hand, took over an hour to come out. As there is a time limit to how long we could be there, I expressed my concern about not having enough time to enjoy our meal before being asked to leave. The server assured me it would be fine as we were the last party to be seated there that day. Sounds great, right? Sure, if we had just as much time as they think we do. Our group had plans for after the teatime and did not expect to be spending over 90 minutes there, 60 of which was spent waiting for our food. I guess they thought that since we were the last party, they could de-prioritize getting our food out. The first round finally came out after an hour and we rushed through it as we were starving. The second portion of our food was not ready until 40 min later and having prior plans, we ended up packing everything to go without even touching them. What we did eat was delicious and fresh, none of that refrigerated taste that we sometimes get at other afternoon tea locations, but the long wait was unacceptable. As this was a special mother's day treat, it was very disappointing and everyone was unhappy with how long it took for the food to come out. I'm aware they make everything fresh but they need to find a better system. The price for the afternoon tea is reasonable at $58/guest and the food is good, but expect a long, long wait. Don't book if you have any other plans after this. read more

Such a great little spot! We came by on a Saturday for a girl's thing and there was only one other party inside. Decor has good character, service was overall ok. They were preparing for a large party that was after our reservation so they weren't the most attentive to us, but it's fine as we were there to chill and talk. They had a menu with recommended tea pairings with the food, which I totally didn't notice until the end. But it's fine because I really liked the tea I got (Spring Eternal)! My friends got the Blueberry Breeze and Memories of Saigon which were good too but I prefer my teas more fragrant, was worth the extra $. Food was soooo good, we had to take some to-go because we were full! Everything was light though, not heavy at all, and paired well with the tea. I think my favorite was this caprese sandwich. It came out to about $60 per person after tip which I felt was pretty worth it. I just wish we could have been there longer than 90 min. read more

What an amazing repast we had yesterday morning at the Dartealing lounge! Just walking into the place immediately soothed my nervous system transporting me to the country instead of third Street in South Beach... Nice for a Sunday morning. The service was outstanding! The food was delicious and presented on a three tiered cake stand with two gorgeous pots of tea . I spotted Dartealing Lounge several times when riding by on a SF #30 Muni bus (going from Caltrain towards downtown). A lover of tea, I was happy to finally try it with a friend this past weekend. The experience was good. Ambiance: the lounge is in an old (historic) building on 3rd Street in SOMA. The long room has a cozy feel with the cutest décor (decorative lamps, chintz curtains, a variety of seats and photos). It is spacious compared to another SF (Noe Valley) tea room I'd visited years ago - giving you some privacy. Food: the Proper Tea service was what the two of us ordered. It is composed of two pots of tea (separate flavors) in gorgeous, heavy china teapots and a 3-tiered plated tower with a mix of savory and sweet creations. We happened to be at the lounge while the June menu was " Latin flavor ". My absolute favorite things were the tea sandwiches. The shop makes their own sauces and recipes for these. There were two corn (elote), two chicken salad and two cucumber sandwich triangles per person - basically we each ended up with 1.5 entire full-sized sandwiches on soft white and brown bread. Yummy. The acclaimed scone was just okay. Having my scone sliced in half on the plate with a dollop of clotted cream and a spot of lemon curd on it (rather than keeping them whole and the toppings in side cups) was a negative point. The toppings made the scones a bit soggy. The scones also were small and being slightly toasted - they ended up being dry :( The two halves of scone were dainty-looking but not substantial. The puréed black bean (with chunks of bean) empanada was yummy but underbaked and the chorizo roll in puff pastry was nice but there was a thin amount of chorizo. Teas: I chose a black tea (Her Majesty's Secret Service - deep brown) and my friend chose a white, fruity tea (Cabana Boy). Both teas had light aromas and tastes. They went well with the food. Service: Very pleasant. We were asked to wait in the entry lounge for 5 minutes until our official start time of 11:30am commenced. Then right on time, we were escorted to our table - a cute round set up in a corner. The wingback chair I sat in was plush and I sank into it. The tea service was clearly explained to us and we placed our orders. We were asked how things were once and had the water in the teapots replenished. Interesting fact: the lounge has been in business for 17 years. That's some longevity!!! Overall, Dartealing Lounge provides a nice tea service at a reasonable price. The other patrons (Moms with daughters, Grandmothers with grandkids or just groups of friends) were enjoying the experience. The 90 minutes for this reservation went by so quickly that we had to box some of the food to takeaway. I'm sure others were like me wishing we were given more time to relax. read more

The best afternoon tea in SF in terms of value, quality of tea and food, ambiance, vibes, and service! $49 per person is a great deal. I came here with 4 friends to kick off my bachelorette celebration. We had a cozy seating area with two small tables, nice and out of earshot from the other tables & groups in the tearoom. We were able to pick 3 types of tea to share- we picked one green, one white, and the most popular: the Parisian Earl Grey. The earl grey was so good, two of us bought some of it to take home. The food was delicious, and there was so much of it that we took a box of sandwiches and a box of sweets to go. The sausage rolls were amazing! I also love how the scones (my second favorite food item that we got) were served pre-cut in half. I liked all of the sandwiches, as well. Our reservation was for 90 minutes, which was the perfect amount of time to enjoy everything and drink plenty of tea. They refilled our hot water as many times as we requested. I've been to Dartealing three times now for special occasions, and it never disappoints. There's street parking nearby, but it is San Francisco... so we usually just take a Lyft to make it easier. Booking was super easy--I submitted an interest form and got a text the same day confirming our reservation. The tea lounge itself is the nicest I've been to. It's clean, cozy yet spacious, and I adore their mix of cups, saucers, and teapots. Such a cute touch. The presentation of the food was gorgeous! Finally tried this tea house. Sufficient parking outside. When we arrived at noon, it seemed like a full house. Our waiter informed us the various teas including the finger sandwiches, desserts and mini pastries. 3 of us ordered our own tea and shared it. The food was delicious and we still had a lot of leftovers to go. There was only one waiter servicing all tables except maybe 2. It felt like I was in Europe. I saw one lady came out with to go boxes and gave 2 girls next to us complimentary teas in a bag. Must've been the chef that they knew. But the waiter was very helpful and prompt. I've been to dartealing twice - once in a large group for a birthday and more recently in a small group of friends. Both times were incredible. This tea lounge has a large selection of teas, including a few premium teas which cost about $5 extra. We got three different teas and shared. Each guest is able to pick one tea for themselves or to share in their group. We picked wings of the dove (a light white tea), spring eternal (fruity oolong) and Parisian earl grey. Our favorite was the Parisian earl grey with milk and sugar. Food was amazing. There was a variety of finger sandwiches, sweets, fruit and scones. Sandwiches rotate depending on the season. Dartealing has the best afternoon tea food pairings of all the tea lounges I've been to. They are also able to accommodate some dietary restrictions as long as you inform them ahead of time. Service was great. Staff is kind and knowledgeable about the menu. They frequently checked back in on us. Parking is fine, it's sf after all. I recommend parking on the cross streets of 3rd. We made a reservation for High Tea for 2 on a Saturday at 130pm. We were seated within 5-10 minutes. Its a tiny place with limited staff but the decor is darling and elegant. There is a price fixe menu per guest $42 which includes a bottomless pot of tea, tea sandwiches, hot savories, scone with jam & cream, sweet tea treats. They were able to accommodate me as a vegetarian which we notified at the time of booking. I was impressed by the extensive tea collection with detailed descriptions, rose raspberry scone, hot savories and my favorite of the tea sandwiches was Cucumber Raddish Gochugaru-- wow!! This place offers regular sitdown tea, ships tea out and has different types of tea classes and it's all mixed together on the website. It's difficult to understand. I didn't even know what it was going to cost. The shop is decorated in a very eclectic, pleasant and unpretentious way. The service is good and they really pay attention to special requests. Our table had vegetarian and non-vegetarian. The place is clean. The food is well thought out. Lighter vegan options would be good. It was a little heavy, but everything did taste good. The service was great, staff was super friendly and they thoroughly described all of the sandwiches and pastries that were being served that day, which were all so, so delicious! Dartealing, as the name suggests, is a darling little tea spot tucked under a tiny overpass in San Francisco's Mission District. For reference, this lounge is near Oracle Park. They allow dining in on the weekends; however, they are closed during the weekdays for catering. You can sit on cozy couches and find Victorian-themed floral patterns throughout the place. While the area may seem small, the spacing felt comfortable, allowing for private conversations without other tables overhearing. The chefs made delicious sandwiches and baked goods with popular flavors, such as the mango coconut cream scone. Although the taste was top-notch, some of the items were served cold: the English sausage roll and the scone. The cold English sausage roll was particularly disappointing because it has always been my favorite. That said, the staff offered good service and treated us nicely. read more

If I was walking by this building, I don't think I would even notice that this place existed! It's right under an overpass, a few blocks from the Yerba Buena Center, in a very industrial area. They don't have a lot of outdoor signage, and the sign did have graffiti on it, and we walked by the first time. Thankfully we have GPS and realized our error. This is about a 20 minute walk from Montgomery BART station. I did notice there was a ton of nearby street parking on the weekend - not sure if that's a usual situation. This place is really decorated like a tea shop, full of cute cups in the windows and teapots on shelves. The seating area was nice, it looked like some of the seatings had comfortable couch-like chairs. We were in a larger (6 person) group so were seated at a table. The tea selections were good - for our party of six, we got three choices, and I loved the chai one. I wasn't as crazy about the other one I tried that was a little too sweet. The food was really good and diverse, though they gave us extra of some sandwiches which can be complicated if splitting with a group. I did enjoy everything, and particularly the blueberry scone which was one of the better scones I've had. Service was really good as well, they refilled our tea pots whenever asked. This is a hidden gem. We had a celebration here and the owner was very accommodating. She mixes all of the teas purchased from all over the world. They do have some special sandwiches so look out for the specials when you arrive. They are not open everyday so check on the dayd they are open. They take reservations only to make enough food for the day so everything is freshly made for the day. She does sell most of the teas so they suggest ordering a few pots to try the other teas. Fresh pink roses on the decorative tablecloth, beautiful vintage tea sets, gussied up chairs, tables and walls. Ton of ppl here- we had to wait a bit for our table. We got the proper afternoon tea set with all the fixings: tea, sandwiches, scones, cucumber appetizers, assortment of petit tea sweets. The tower of food was lovely and we enjoyed the different savory and sweet bites with our tea as well as photo shoot- mom loves her pics! Yay, we each got our own teapot. Don't be shy, ask for scream and sugar. Everything was my favorite. There was a pumpkin theme, so go now if pumpkin is your thing. I love the egg salad sandwich, so creamy. Cucumber and turkey were just as good. The tiny dessert with cookie crust and caramel mousse? Was delish. It reminds me some tiny people in the kitchen made tiny desserts. They explained what we got but it goes right through my head. Baked crusty Sausage roll. Cheesecake. Pumpkin short bread cookie, pumpkin scone with jam. If you cannot have dairy, please specify before making reservation. I had a very enjoyable time. All I can think about this place is the amazing tea selection they had with unique names. I believe I had a dark tea while my bf had a light tea. This review is for Dartealing's To-Go service. I was having some friends over and thought having afternoon tea at home would be fun. Dartealing has a perfect to-go box called ParTea for 4. Communication with them before pickup was excellent. When I arrived, a very nice gentlemen helped me out to my car with my order. Everything was packaged beautifully, tasted wonderful and there was more than enough food for all of us! Along with the scones, tea sandwiches, and sweets, they included an adorable tea caddy which includes 2 types of tea, rock candy stirrers, cute sugar cubes and cookies. My daughter and I love this place! Nestled into an unlikely spot in the city, near highway overpasses, Dartealing is a little oasis! Setting: The atmosphere is a bit of a throwback in time with tastefully chosen victorian furnishings and adorned with knick knacks and teapots. "Quaint" is the best word I can come up with. It definitely sets a mood. Service: The service is friendly and helpful, occasionally a bit slow but I think you want to slow down a little when you come to tea here. Expect to budget 90 minutes for a leisurely tea, reservations highly encouraged. Food: The food is the star of the show! The chef/owner puts a spin on everything "traditional" about tea. For example, take the traditional egg salad sandwich: Dartealing makes this interesting by adding a touch of truffle oil, watercress and crispy onions. The scones are home-made from tried and true family recipes that are delicious. I've only tried the strawberry champagne but they were so good, I've ordered 1/2 dozen to take home. The menu rotates slowly throughout the year. Food is abundant enough to be considered a full meal. I've never left hungry and count it as a meal. Tea: Oddly, I'm not a huge tea drinker but they have many interesting selections and cocoa bomb as an alternative for the kiddos (at add'l cost). Parking: Despite another poster's claim: parking has always been easy-peasy for me. Free abundant street parking on Sundays. Cheap abundant street parking on other days. You may have to walk a block or two. All said, we'll be back many times over! read more
