It serves a new development of flats, shops a hotel and offices called Imperial Wharf, built on the site of an old gas works, as well as the more established development at Chelsea Harbour, and older, established neighbourhoods around Sands End. There have been plans to build a station here for some 15 years, as the area has long had poor transport connections; the service now provides access to mainline connections at Clapham Junction, Willesden Junction and Watford Junction, as well as Underground services via West Brompton, Kensington Olympia and Shepherd's Bush. The station itself is built on an embankment, with access via a glass-encased staircase and lifts from a ticket office located in a tunnel under the tracks. The platform buildings comprise shelters under stylish 'wave' styled canopies, with more glass panels to provide protection from the biting winds that come along the Thames. (The exposed nature and lack of heated waiting room is, indeed, one of the station's main drawbacks, although it is possible to shelter in the ticket office area). The station is served by the half-hourly Willesden Junction to Clapham Junction service of London Overground, which is extended to Stratford in peak hours. It is also served by the hourly Milton Keynes - East Croydon Service, which is reduced to Watford Junction to Clapham Junction in the early morning and after the evening rush hour. The station is currently staffed for all trains, and the lifts provide level access throughout. There are uncovered cycle racks in the small square created on the Imperial Wharf (west) side. Bus connections include the 391 (Richmond-Sands End), 424 (Fulham-Putney Heath) and C3 (Clapham Junction-Earl's Court).

Well, that probably should be surprising considering that Croydon is a pretty major metropolitan hub, so of course there is going to be a pretty large station here. Like a lot of stations, it's not bad at all, and reasonably easy to get around. Oh, and there are lots of shops there as well.

The first station in Richmond was built in 1846, not on the same site as the present building which…read moreopened its doors in 1937. Richmond station serves as a terminus for zone 4 district line services and also as a stop for many national rail services out of Waterloo and into Surrey. You can get to Hammersmith on the district line in around 15 minutes, or into Waterloo in around 16 mins on the main line fast service, of which there are around 2 per hour. This makes Richmond very commutable. The final piece of the puzzle serving North London is the Silverlink service, which, if you can brave the crack addicts can get you all the way to Hampsted in around 40 mins. It feels like the slowest train in the world right now, although TfL are taking over management so perhaps it will improve. There are 7 platforms, 1+2 for main line services, 3+4 for Silverlink, and 5-7 for district line. I would advise skipping the ticket office and machines in the entrance hall and going to the ones on platform level which are much less busy. There is a front entrance onto Richmond High Street, and a handy back entrance onto Church Road which is much more pleasant, but floods everytime it rains. It was recently voted South West Trains 'Station of the Year 2007' in mysterious circumstances. If you're hungry, I would advise popping into Source next door and getting a take out, which you can scoff on the way into London...

Transport for London have just renamed the sliverlink service 'London Overground' and there is new trains on the way in 2008 or 2009. I personally find it to be slow but quite good for getting to Camden, King's Cross etc without going into Zone 1. There is a new Marks and Spencer where the Door shop used to be by the ticket barriers in the entrance hall. I still think Phil is right about going to Source though instead though!

Tottenham Court Road Tube Station is by far the most posh of the Tube stations that we travelled…read morethrough. The Station is busy with local people traveling to work and tourists coming to shop in the area. The pace is fast with north/south and east/west trains that travel to Heathrow. The walls are freshly covered in white tiles. The station is clean with a very long escalator up and down to the tubes. Escalators are available if you have a stroller or are carrying luggage. The walls are covered with show advertisements. Using credit card to tap on and off is easy. Monitors tell passengers the exact moment a train will arrive. We travelled through the station several times.

We took the Elizabeth Line to avoid making too many transfers even though there were other train stations nearby. We wanted to keep our trip simple and stress free. If you're are travelling here and taking the Elizabeth Line from the airport to the Strand area.... I recommend using a wheeled rolling suitcase. This is what we used and we packed light too so it was easy for us to roll our luggage along the many cobblestone sidewalks. Navigating Tottenham Court Road Station is easy. There are maps located throughout the station so you know where you are and where you're going and which stops to get off and on at. Make sure to have your credit/debit card on hand to swipe through and make the swipe your card again once you get off the train so you don't keep getting charged after you've completed your trip. Then again, it is also located in Inner London, in one of the more popular areas, which is probably why people also like jumping off here. It isn't really one of the fanciest of stations, but I still thought it was pretty cool, namely because, well, it is one of those subway stations that give London quite a bit of character. So this is the mile end, but where does the mile start?…read more When I visit my friend at Queen Mary University, I invariably use Mile End tube station, and I quite like it. It's well-constructed, it's not too busy, it offers access to the Central line and also Hammersmith City, and I've never felt unsafe here. It's also not too far from Shoreditch and some of my fave places to eat and drink in London, for sure. And to my ex's place (sob). Overall a good station.

But, I'm not going to tell you about that, what I love about this station is: - the staff is so so nice, all day, every day - the train for waterloo is super convenient, in 20 minutes you're in central London - the station is surrounded by great practical shops and you can also buy magazines inside the station. Finally, when you step outside the station, there's a vintage car shop which creates a retro atmosphere, and it's nice to look at the cars while you wait for the train!

Mortlake Railway Station gets you to Waterloo in less than twenty minutes and is a life line for us…read moreworking in London's suburbs. However, the railway station is usually unstaffed and the ticket situation is quite complicated. Although Oysters are accepted en-route, there aren't the facilities to top up your Oyster card and the nearest place in which you can do so is a seven minute walk away. It's for this reason that I often end up buying a more expensive day travelcard and the strange way that the machines are laid out means that I have on a few occasions ended up buying the wrong travelcard and had to pay for another one at Waterloo. However, trains from here are pretty regular and the station even has facilities for buying glossy magazines and newspapers to read en-route.

Stratford Station is the train station that we used most often when we stay in London. We always…read morestay at a hotel close to Stratford Station because it is very convenient. So many of the different train lines stop at Stratford Station. As others have mentioned, this station is huge! We've gotten a bit confused a couple of times during our stay. The staff have been very helpful in directing us where to go to get to our destination. For our most recent trip to London, there were quite a bit of homeless folks and litter outside the station. Never noticed any on our past trips to London. Other than that, I have no complaints about Stratford Station.

Okay, like this station may not be all that grand, but at least it dumps you in the middle of a…read moreshopping district, which I what I believe stations are supposed to do. Well, also there is the high density housing, but I haven't been paying too much attention to that. Anyhow, this station really wasn't all that bad. Quite handy actually.

Balham Station has both an underground stop and a National Rail station…read more For the underground, the only option from this station is the Northern line. The main problem with this line is that it can be quite packed during the morning rush hour. It gets to Balham fairly packed and leaves completely packed. I really don't know how people in Clapham actually get to work. For the National Rail station, you can get the train to other major train stations in London. Depending on the train you catch, you can get to Clapham Junction in one stop. A downside of this station, as mentioned in some other reviews. Is that the lines to refill your Oyster card can be quite long. You definitely want to avoid doing this during the morning rush hour. On the plus side, there are places to get a coffee, both in the entrance and on the platform of the train station part. Also, the station is well situated in the area with plenty of shops, restaurants and pubs nearby. You can likely pick up whatever you need without making a big detour on your way from the station to your home.
