It is also the terminus of the Wimbledon branch of the District Line of TfL, and of the Tramlink to Croydon, and provides an interchange with the Sutton loop of the Thameslink service via Blackfriars. It is used by 19 million passengers a year on the main line, a similar number on the District Line, and over 2 million on Tramlink. The station opened on the Waterloo to Woking Line in 1838, with the other branches owning over the subsequent 40 years, although the line towards Sutton opened as late as 1929. In 1997 the line to West Croydon was closed for conversion into the Tramlink, reopening in 2000. In 1881 the station was relocated from its original site on the opposite side of the bridge. The station was rebuilt in the Art Deco style in the 1920s. The station has 11 platforms: 1-4 for the District Line terminus, which has its own concourse on the north side of the station (where the toilets are located); 5-8 on the South West main line; 9 for Thameslink services and 10a and 10b for Tramlink. Platforms 6 and 7 are on the fast lines and only used occasionally. All stopping suburban services from Waterloo stop here. Lifts provide step free access to all platforms. The ticket office and concourse are located on the north side of the station adjacent to the staircase to the District Line. There are shop units along the bridge above the platforms selling food, and future shop units on the District Line concourse. There is an exit on the south side of the station next to the entrance to the Centre Court shopping centre.

Richmond station serves as a terminus for zone 4 district line services and also as a stop for many national rail services out of Waterloo and into Surrey. You can get to Hammersmith on the district line in around 15 minutes, or into Waterloo in around 16 mins on the main line fast service, of which there are around 2 per hour. This makes Richmond very commutable. The final piece of the puzzle serving North London is the Silverlink service, which, if you can brave the crack addicts can get you all the way to Hampsted in around 40 mins. It feels like the slowest train in the world right now, although TfL are taking over management so perhaps it will improve. There are 7 platforms, 1+2 for main line services, 3+4 for Silverlink, and 5-7 for district line. I would advise skipping the ticket office and machines in the entrance hall and going to the ones on platform level which are much less busy. There is a front entrance onto Richmond High Street, and a handy back entrance onto Church Road which is much more pleasant, but floods everytime it rains. It was recently voted South West Trains 'Station of the Year 2007' in mysterious circumstances. If you're hungry, I would advise popping into Source next door and getting a take out, which you can scoff on the way into London...

Transport for London have just renamed the sliverlink service 'London Overground' and there is new trains on the way in 2008 or 2009. I personally find it to be slow but quite good for getting to Camden, King's Cross etc without going into Zone 1. There is a new Marks and Spencer where the Door shop used to be by the ticket barriers in the entrance hall. I still think Phil is right about going to Source though instead though!

Since my cousin lives around the corner from this Overground Station I have used it a bunch the…read morepast year. It's on the Stratford to Richmond/Clapham Junction line and, like most of the Overground trains, has a good on-time record so you know when your train will get there and when you need to arrive at the station to catch it. Whether you're heading to the East or the West you can take an Overground train from here and even transfer to Mainline or Underground trains with the use of an Oyster Card. There's usually both someone in the booth here at this station as well as someone else near the ticket/card reader.

perhaps the best looking tube station in london!…read more but definitely the nearest one to the all england lawn tennis club. thematic decorations here, create a special atmosphere like no other. you have lawn-like floor carpeting for the platform area. seats are specially printed with names of tennis greats. life sized tennis players and netting lines the fencing on both sides of the platform. upgrading works are on going to get it ready for the olympic games in 2012. basically the addition of a lift from the platform to the exit level, removal of shops and ticket gates. you can take a nice stroll along wimbledon park rd or bus no. 493 to get to the club.

The washrooms are convenient and finding the platforms is reasonably easy. It's a relatively navigable station with numerous connections to local destinations and beyond. Use of this station is more likely to facilitate your journey than detract from it.

I have not braved the toilets yet but know they have reduced hours due to some graffitti. The overbridge is also a little treachorous, with some of the stairs a little uneven. That said, it is fairly well lit when coming home and night, and as there tend to be a fair crowd of people getting of the train late into the evening I have never felt unsafe even when the station is unmanned.

It's clean and well-run and is easy to navigate with signage. I came into this station from Heathrow via the express train from the airport to Paddington Station for about $45. I easily walked up and purchased my ticket at the airport from a kiosk and walked via the easy to follow signage to the correct area and waited about 8 minutes for the next train. Once at Paddington, I switched to another train and made it to my hotel. All for about $50 in 45 minutes instead of spending $150 on a taxi and sitting in traffic for two hours. No thanks! I love the ease of inner city travel via train in London. It's great. Europeans have it figured out when it comes to that! The station itself is large and has plenty of shopping and snacks to take care of you. I hadn't eaten in hours and grabbed a sandwich while here and looked at some shirts and sunglasses for the trip.
