History

Established in 1934.

The pack outfit was founded in 1934 by Ole Scott. In 1982, his nephew and employee, Steve Darwood purchased the outfit which became Cascade Wilderness Outfitters. Steve’s family homesteaded in the Methow Valley, just three miles from his home in Carlton, in 1890. In 2020, the family owned and operated business transitioned as Steve handed the reins over to his son and employee of 23 years, Jess Darwood. Steve and Jess have spent decades working together, packing, guiding, shoeing, training and building custom saddles. Along with his wife and children, Jess is honored to carry on the family business and share his love of the wilderness with generations to come.

Meet the Business Owner: Jess D.

Jess Darwood began packing for his dad, Steve Darwood, when he was just 13 years old. Having been born and raised in the Methow Valley and spending his childhood on horseback in the wilderness, he is thrilled to be carrying on the family outfitting tradition as the owner of Darwood Outfitting. Jess is a fourth generation outfitter in the Methow Valley.
