Even doctors who market themselves as being for-the-people suffer from the same arrogance that puts many of us off of the medical industry. I went to Dr. Dave because I had suddenly started having dizzy spells and almost fell off the subway platform one day on my way to work. A friend gave me the number and I sucked it up and called Dr. Dave's office. They squeezed me in for a same-day appointment. (Hence the 2 stars. That was nice to get in so fast.) When I did see him, I tried to explain what had happened -- he interrupted me. When I started to explain what I'd already tried to correct the problem, he totally shut me down with "Did you go to medical school!?" Uh, no, but I know more about my body than you do -- especially when you won't let me explain any symptoms for you to evaluate. Ouch. I don't know what it is about doctors, but I felt like a little kid in the principal's office, and that was totally unnecessary. So, Dr. Dave was condescending towards me and not inquisitive about my symptoms or any behavior that may have led to them. His solution was to write me a prescription for Meclizine, hand me a bill and send me packing. I filled the script for Meclizine, and then realized -- "This is Dramamine. Even the doseage is the same." And I already had Dramamine left from when one of my friends got married on a boat. (I believe in preparing for worst case scenarios.) The difference is, prescription Meclizine is double the price of a box of Dramamine/Meclizine. He could've told me it was an OTC drug and saved me a few bucks. The Meclizine just put me to sleep for hours, which is not really a great solution. I called one of my pals from back home to blow off steam about my rotten experience, and she told me Meclizine is what lazy doctors prescribe when they don't know or care enough to diagnose a patient properly and just want a drug that will cover-up ear-related/vertigo symptoms. (If you're wondering, this friend DID go to med school. She was one of the top 10 audiologists in the state of VA, until she was wooed away by Stanford.) . By all means, go to Dr. Dave if you've got an infection and need a script for antibiotics, or something else totally obvious. For anything remotely complex, you'll probably do just as well by asking complete strangers on the street to diagnose & treat you. If you just want someone to insult you and then charge you for it, there are more attractive dommes in this city. read more

I saw Dr Dave for my Greencard medical exam. The GC process is long, stressful and expensive- and Dr Dave was able to see me quickly to conduct the exam (also being very flexible with my work schedule). He was thorough, made sure I got the vaccines needed, but charged me a fair price, in addition to helping me get the vaccines needed through my insurance. To top it off, each visit ended with a much appreciated lollipop. Thanks Dr Dave, you really helped make the end of an incredibly painful process smooth and pain free. read more

I went to Dr. Dave years ago when I was laid off from my job and didn't have insurance as a result. He really worked with me and was not judgmental about my situation. Plus he was very knowledgeable about what my problem was and helped me to get better. I needed his assistance a second time and was able to so. He even returned my phone call on a weekend night! I take off one star because I felt the waiting room was a little cluttered and cramped and the office was a bit older looking but it's a bit charming at the same time... read more

Ethics: Dr. Dave is the most ethical person on the planet, period. I've seen him leave a social event to take care of a sick person. He's taken personal, unpaid time to listen and advise patients, make calls to their "other" doctors, reduced bills, answered calls way out of normal business hours, many, many examples I've witnessed over 10 years. He's an incredibly compassionate physician, with top notch clinical reasoning, and he's happy to show samples of his tattoo removal work -- on his own hand. I too suffered the arrogance of Dr. Dave. I have never had to argue my way through an appointment with a medical professional like I had to with him. I went there to get a birth-control prescription. Im a 31 year old woman. When he learned that I had recently quit smoking he became fixated on prescribing me Nicotine because he is convinced that people who have quit "will all eventually start up again". "No thanks" I said. But that didnt stop him. On and on he went, hell-bent on reminding me that I would have a cigarette again. At one point I looked for a TV Show hidden camera because his attitude was so utterly unbelievable. He said I may as well be "hooked on heroin" because kicking nicotine is "about the same" and he AGAIN pressured me to take the Nicotine script. In the end I had to raise my voice to ask "Are you done yet???!!!!!" I couldnt get out of there fast enough. I have never experienced such blatant disrespect for my needs as a patient and felt hopeless at the same time and PS) 10 months later, not a puff! read more

I went to Dr. Dave after having an intense flu for 5 days. While he sat with me in his office he took two phone calls - one was his mother and the other was business-related, but all he did was talk to the person on the other line about motorcycles for 5 minutes. It was awkward. He also charged me for 2 visits, making sure I would come back for a follow up. I didn't really intend to return unless my illness persisted, but he was insistent. He recommended that, if I had to work when feeling sick, I should take 6 Advil, 4 Tylenol and 64oz of gatorade all at once. Kind of questionable advice coming from a doctor, but hell, it worked. He prescribed me antibiotics, which led to a brutal yeast infection. I asked for a 'script for the pill that makes the infection go away, because the creams have hurt me in the past. He dismissed my request, telling me to just take some acidophilus (which, btw, is preventative, NOT a cure.) When I told him it didn't work, and asked again for the pill prescription he said, "Those pills are terrible for your body and could kill you. Would you rather be uncomfortable, or would you rather die?" I'm not kidding. He actually told me I would die if I took this pill that I've taken numerous times over the years. He never did give me the prescription, and he was so flippant and dismissive about it. I called a Ob/Gyn I used to see when I had insurance and she just called in the prescription for me free of charge, because she understands that, when you have a yeast infection, you actually WOULD rather die than continue to suffer. I have seen Dr. Ores a few times for very basic medical needs. It is possible his medical knowledge and skills are good, but my appointments did not really put him to the test. I agree that his demeanor and way of communicating (or not) with patients is the main issue. Dr. Ores can be impatient, quick to interrupt and condescending. I felt it necessary to be unusually careful with what I said, how I said it, and how long it took to say it, which made my visits needlessly stressful. He also doesn't consistently return phone calls from patients, and yet he readily takes phone calls while he is consulting with patients. The last time I was there his space was neither clean nor organized -- piles of vacutainers and other supplies were precariously stacked in the niche where we sat. You may get lucky with Dr. Ores -- he may return your call(s), he may listen to you patiently and he may offer you good medical care at a reasonable price. But I've experienced his other side too often for my taste. I wish this doctor well, but am seeking medical care elsewhere. read more

Dr Ores is the f#&*inging man! I work in the service industry and currently do not have health insurance. Dr Ores runs a non profit program that my bar is signed up for whereby employees can make an appointment free of charge. Aside from not having to pay a dime Dr. Ores spent time with me after to search the web for coupons to get my prescriptions for a fraction of the retail cost. In a country with some ass backwards views on public healthcare, Dr. Ores is a reminder that there are people who give a damn and try to contribute the greater good. Thanks Doc! read more

I am so glad I heard out about Dr. Ores through the grapevine. He is one of the only doctors I have ever been to who genuinely works for and with people who are uninsured. He not only takes uninsured patients- at a totally reasonable cost- he understands there are prohibitive costs associated with healthcare in general. He is familiar with how much things cost and goes out of his way to advocate for patients. Dr. Ores helped me take control over my health situation when other doctors kept recommending prohibitively expensive testing and referring me to specialists. If you know that you need a particular kind of specialist, he might not be the right guy. But if you have a problem other doctors have been unable to solve, or a general non-emergency medical issue, he is a great resource. It is truly inspiring to see someone working and functioning in New York outside of corporate culture. It is hilarious to me that people are complaining on yelp about the brashness of his personality, or the state of the waiting room. I think he's very warm under the gruff exterior, and the weird paintings in the waiting room are awesome. Haters are welcome to go to your nearest urgent care doctor, where you will charged many times more and likely passed off to another doctor you can't afford. 5 STARS!!!!! read more

********++++BEWARE THIS DOCTOR*++++********* Dr. David Ores is the worst doctor I have ever had! Not only did I have an awful reaction to the meds he prescribed and was sick For over a month. when I called and spoke with him personally telling him how the meds weren't working he simply replied I am not at office let me call you back. He never did. I called several times!! I also wrote him several emails which he never answered. which is how I made the appointment in the first place through his email. He gave me medication used to treat anthrax not strep! So here I am after a grueling month of being sick. unable to walk due to pain in my legs, ragging yeast infection due to reaction of meds. I couldnt wear underwear for a month. Had a low grade fever almost every day! my strep never went away. He was negative. Rude. And unprofessional. So freaking pissed. Have to find a REAL doctor who won't prescribe me meds used for Anthrax patients that have dangerous side affects!! Ciprofloxacin is never used for strep throat. The side effects from this drug are insane. I should have received penicillin like any other doctor would have prescribed. Missed a month of work now going to miss more because of this doctor who just didn't care and wanted his patients out the door quick!!! Zero stars!!! read more

Nope. Don't do it. Not matter how good the "champion of the uninsured" doctor sounds, it's not true. I didn't even see him for medical purposes -- it was for laser hair removal. After my first visit, when I was scheduling the next appointment with him, I mentioned that I couldn't come at the time he insisted because I had to be at work at my 2nd job. He asked me what that job was and, because I didn't feel like telling him, told him that I just wanted to schedule it at a different time. He wouldn't quit -- he kept asking me what my other job was, and telling me that my boss would understand if I needed to take time off in the middle of the day (um, no), and why wouldn't I just come in when he asked? Then he kept asking, over and over, for more personal details about me -- if I had a boyfriend, etc. I had 4 visits for the laser removal before he disappeared -- every time I tried to call and make a new appointment he was full of excuses, saying that the laser machine was broken, he had to find a guy to fix it, the guy couldn't fix it, and acted supremely irritated with me for even trying to make an appt. Also, I should add that the laser removal didn't even WORK. I found a new place to go to who actually did it right. They told me that it hadn't worked when he did those 4 sessions on me basically because he didn't know how to use the machine -- he hadn't turned it up high enough. read more

Went to Dr Dave for my green card medical. He was the only person in lower east side / east village that was clear about price from the beginning. He's super knowledgable and let me know all the costs and process up front. He responds to text which is great & he always replies quickly. The green card process is stressful but Doctor Dave made it so easy. Great guy & super friendly. Would highly recommend. read more

I've visited his office on more than one occasion practically pleading to take me on as a patient for the past year and a half to help me remove an unwanted tattoo. Each time, he's fed me some bs story about how he was waiting for some better laser removal machine to come in and each time he said it would be another 6 months. Wow! Do I feel 100% better after reading the other reviews of Dr. Dave! To say the least, his bedside manner leaves much to be desired. I am appalled that someone who supposedly wants to reform the problems in our health care system ( and gets lots of press for it ) completely embodies everything that is wrong with it. One of the biggest problems with our health care system is the lack of respect, attention, and humanity that doctors give their patients. Dr. Dave, the vigilante, is a prime example of these atrocities. I went to see him yesterday for pink eye (I know gross). I too, was cut off many times when answering questions about my medical history or trying to explain that I believe my eye problems are from allergies and I would prefer not to take antibiotics. He of course, asked if I smoked and I told him I had quit 2 years ago. He then proceeds to listen to my lungs with a stethoscope for all of 30 seconds and declare that I have emphysema! Naturally, hearing that you have a life altering lung disease is going to leave you wanting information of some kind or at the very least have your questions answered. When I asked if this was an official diagnosis, he told me I need to start swimming and come back to him for a physical. Insurance does not cover the physical, I would have to pay him out of pocket. He did not recommend seeing a specialist. He did not recommend any testing such as pulmonary function tests, blood gas analysis, x-rays, or CT's. Nothing of the sort. I, a 32 year old with emphysema, need to start swimming and come back and pay him for a physical to check my blood pressure. No further information on emphysema, what stage I may possibly be in, or possible treatments was given. All of this took place in about 10 minutes. Oh, and I owed him $125 for scaring the crap out of me and never once discussing what I was actually there for. And all of this while answering the phone, texting, and never once looking me in the eye. I don't know if Dr. Dave hates any one who has ever smoked, women, or if he is just an uncaring jerk that secretly hates everyone. Regardless, he is everything that is wrong with doctors and our current medical system and I honestly hope that some day he looses his license. read more

I would advise being cautious of "Dr. Dave". I went to him because he had been recommended to be by a friend of a friend. I was pretty amped when I heard about him because I liked the idea of going to a doctor who wasn't going to look at my tattoos and make any number of assumptions about me. At the time I was without a primary care doctor and actively looking for one because my last doctor had move out of NYC. I also needed a doctor because I was having heartburn caused by anything and everything I ingested including water and on some days was unable to hold food down. On my way to my first visit with Dr. Dave I threw up on Houston Street so in the interest of full disclosure I was a little shaken up when I got to the office. I went against my gut when in my first visit he immediately diagnosed me as suffering me from generalized anxiety disorder and doubted that my daily heart burn and vomiting were in fact the acid reflux or any other digestive issue, despite that I had been diagnosed with acid reflux and a hatial hernia 2 years earlier by a specialist. He felt that my digestive problems were caused by anxiety and by fixing that my stomach would be cured. No doctor I had ever seen had that theory about my stomach which has bothered me since I was very young so at the time I thought why not try it because I figured I had nothing to loose. He gave me a script for prev acid (for the acid reflux) because I insisted and lexapro (for the anxiety) but was reluctant to refer me to a specialist for an endoscopy to check if any further damage had been done since my last one 2 years earlier. He told me that I would have to be on both medications for at least a month before he would send me for an endoscopy. After three weeks on the lexapro I was dopey and miserable. When I called him to renew my prev acid and follow up on who he was sending me to for the endoscopy he said he didn't want to refill the prev acid without the lexapro. When I explained that I didn't like the way the lexipro made me feel and I didn't want to take it anymore he was not happy. We actually argued and he finally reluctantly agreed to send me to a specialist although he made it pretty clear the purpose in his mind was to prove the acid reflux was all in my head. When the test results came back I met with the specialist first and spoke to Dr. Dave second. The specialist confirmed that what I have is not in my head and diagnosed me with acid reflux. When I spoke to Dr. Dave he, even after seeing what the specialist had written about the test results, wasn't convinced. He made another push for the lexapro and that was where I drew the line and found a new doctor. He isn't necessarily a bad doctor but he is very ego driven and extremely invested in being right. He made snap judgments about me in our initial meeting which was unfortunately a time when I was in a lot of physical pain and wasn't myself as a result. I will admit I made snap judgments too though. I saw a person with tattoos like me and I expected him to be different than what I think of as a traditional doctor which was a stupid assumption to have made. His style might work for some but it didn't work for me. read more

Instead of returning my phone calls or setting an appt, he bombarded my cell phone with ADVERTISING. That's right, ads. When I told him he was a charlatan and that I was reporting him to the BBB, he texted back that "oops" he'd made a mistake and confused me with the other patient who wanted to be bombarded with ads. read more

I went to Dr. Ores for a USCIS exam. It was fast, painless, and he took the time to direct me to NY Health immunization locations which saved quite a bit of $$. I was in and out of his office within 15 minutes of each visit. If you're looking for delicate bedside manner and a regular-looking office, this place might not be for you. I've had so many logistical and personal nightmares dealing with doctors and insurance companies in the past, Dr Ores office is an oasis in the broken US healthcare system. This person is the rudest doctor I ever spoke with. He doesn't respond to phone calls, nor emails, only texts. I won't talk about my reasons to book an appointment on yelp but I do want to let everyone know that he is very unprofessional, and unpolite. At least in the approach to patients.
