Mechanics have a reputation of being a place where you feel like they're just trying to get over on you. This is not the place. My family has been bringing vehicles to them for years for everything from major repairs to routine maintenance. There isn't any other shop I'd feel comfortable bringing my car to. There's never a hard sell on anything. When given a diagnosis I always ask what is an immediate need and what can wait - especially during times where money is tight. Lisa is great at being upfront and honest with what should be addressed immediately, what can wait, what is optional, and what could potentially happen if I wait too long on some repairs. There has been more than one occasion where I bring my vehicle in for service and was expecting it to be a larger bill, but it'll end up being less than what I expect. I came to Dave's because of their reputation for being an honest mechanic and I am happy to say that they have shown just that and I will be coming back for future service. Caitlyn was fabulous in hearing what the issue was with my car and did a great job working with the mechanics to identify and resolve the issue around my AC. In the assessment of my car overall, she outlined what the urgent recommendations were and ones that would be upcoming in the future. I decided to get an oil change while I was there and additional fluids serviced. I particularly liked the mechanic John, he was willing to listen to the issues and make reasonable assessments. There was another mechanic who was a bit blinded by thinking I didn't know some basic functions of my car and assume I am not too bright, but Caitlyn was able to immediately recognize his mistake and made it right and got me the service I needed! read more

We took our 2008 Honda Pilot and 2010 Honda Civic for maintenance. They told us our Honda Civic would not pass the smog check so after the diagnosis they told us it would be very expensive to make the repairs and no guarantees of passing the smog. I really appreciated the honesty to tell us the truth right away without trying to pretend they could maybe repair our car. Honda Pilot has minor issues but they told us to wait up on them since they were not urgent. Honda dealer would have pushed so much to have those issues done if we would still be with them. I like that they are a neighborhood business, they are honest and right on point on their diagnosis. Prices are very reasonable and every time we get there we are in and out in a few minutes. I brought my car to Dave's Auto Repair to find the coolant leak and fix it. They quickly found the issue after running a pressure test and found cracks in a part that holds 3 hoses which was causing the leaks. They had it replaced quickly. They even fixed my windshield wiper fluid, which wasn't coming out free of charge. I enjoyed working with Lisa and felt I can trust her which is something I have been looking for in an Auto shop. Different vehicle this time...same great service! Brought in my "new" truck with a seriously twisted seat belt on the driver's door. They not only fixed "the twist", they checked all the other belts, tightened a loose anchor the belt, safety checked all vehicle fluids and tire pressures and recommended when the next service would be due. All of this was done within two hours of stopping in to inquire about a seat belt fix! Quick, friendly, honest and reasonable. All the lights were on in my car (Check engine etc) after a deer ran into my car. Dave's auto very quickly got my car in to check what was happening and to see if some damage was caused. I took in a car I was interested in buying off of craigslist for a pre purchase inspection. I had called Lisa the day before bringing in the car and she was extremely knowledgeable about the Honda CR-V that I was interested in. She even said she'd take a look at the car before doing the full PPI and would let me know right off the bat if it was a bad car without charging me. Immediately entering the office, Lisa assured me that she worked for me and only me and no matter whatever the random craigslist guy "said" he did, she would be completely honest with me about the vehicle. She took a look around the car first before doing the full inspection and then just started listing off things that weren't right with the car as well as what was right with the car. I don't know anything about cars so to have her just immediately list things off was really assuring. I went ahead and got the full PPI and it got worked on immediately. I went to have lunch for about an hour and a half before getting a call from Lisa saying the car was ready, some things needed to be fixed, but it was overall not a bad car. I went back into the office and she explained what needed to be done and how much it would cost if I had it done at her shop. Because I don't know a whole lot about cars she explained a lot of the things to me but never tried to sway me any which way, she simply gave me the facts and let me make my own decisions which was very assuring. Lisa is an honest person and that can be difficult to find nowadays. Although I had no work done at her shop, I wouldn't hesitate to drive all the way from Castro valley (where I live) up to Pinole just to have work done at her place. read more

I stumbled across this business while doing research on Yelp for an honest body shop. I have had many experiences where I'm overcharged or told I'm needing extra parts because I am not familiar with cars. Any how, I chose this business because many reviews stated that Lisa and her team were honest and transparent with their work. I decided to take my 97 Honda Civic to them because it was overheating. After failed at home attempts to fix the job I was told that it may be a bigger issue.. the head gasket. Took it to this shop and indeed that was the problem. It took about three weeks for the job which was a little inconvenient to be honest but they fixed the problem. After picking up my car the check engine came on soon after. I called Lisa and took it back to the shop where it was discovered I needed to replace some idling sensor. Picked car up and again check engine light came back on. This happened over the weekend so I couldn't take the car back but literally on Monday, when I tried to accelerate after being at a stop sign or stop light the car would jerk. I had the car towed to Lisa and her and her team re evaluated and took everything apart to figure out that the sensor they had replaced was bad and they had to replace it again. (After all was said and done, Lisa offered to reimburse or credit me for the tow back to the shop). I give all these details to say that at any point lisa could have told me to F off. They had did their work and gotten their money so she really was not obligated to help me. But after talking to her almost daily, she assured me that she was invested in seeing what was wrong with my car and never made me feel like I was inconveniencing her. She is extremely patient and knowledgeable and I thank her and her team for all the work they put into my little hoopty. She is honest and will not try to play you. This shop and it's members have integrity and while you car may be down for some time, their work is thorough and that's something I can appreciate, especially when I am dropping a decent amount of money. She will continue to have my business and support and I would recommend this shop to those who ask me. read more

My 83K mile 2014 Honda Accord was making some loud noise when it would start and would continue even when it warmed up. I went to Dave's Auto Repair and spoke with Lisa and she was able to take a look at it immediately and figured out it was 2.5 quarts low on oil. Now my car is purring like a kitten again! Lisa, Susan and the mechanic (sorry I didn't get his name) were very friendly, they listened and made me feel like my concern was important. They were very professional and personable. Lisa told me some things that will help keep my Honda running great and she agreed to service/maintain my vehicle. The great thing that was wonderful was that she told me if my car kept making noise to come back immediately!!!! read more

I heard about Dave's Auto Repair through my mom. She takes both of her Hondas here - CRV & Accord. So I took my Honda Fit here to get it checked out since I had issues with my AC unit on the freeway. I also got an oil change since I was almost due & had the car in storage (Lisa said the oil change wasn't necessary yet. I appreciated her honesty and had it done anyway.) Upon their inspection, my AC worked fine. But all I got when I was driving back was warm air. So they did further testing and inspections the following morning to see why my compressor wasn't working properly while on the highway. They found the problem. Whoever did my AC service before had overfilled the oil. Lisa had her mechanic refill my AC since it was filled only halfway. My AC is working fine now. I manage a small real estate investment brokerage in the Bay Area. All anyone can ever ask for is for someone to be honest with you so you can make better decisions. Not only was Lisa upfront with me, but she went above and beyond my expectations and exhausted her resources to get to the root of the problem. It's rare trait and one I truly appreciate in people. I went there for a couple of services that needed to be done on my car.  The first service was because the front wheel bearing of my vehicle had to be replaced.  The work was performed well for that type of service by the Auto shop. So far I have no complaints for that service. I would have provided gladly a 5 star rating to the Auto Repair shop, if Lisa had not failed miserably during the repair of the second service that my vehicle needed.  Hence the 2 star rating.  However, while working on the second service Dave auto repair car shop failed miserably in their repair work. That's why I am very dissatisfied with their work that they did during the second repair of my car. The second repair involved the fixing the A/C of my vehicle.  Following Lisa's suggestions, the following components were replaced first: 1. The Condenser was changed; 2. Then the PCM/Processor was replaced too; 3. Then the computer relay module was replaced. Before the replacement of the computer relay module, Lisa assured me several times that, after the module was replaced, the AC system would fully work.  To be absolutely sure, I asked Lisa several times if there might be any other other problems with the AC following the replacement of the relay module.   Lisa assured me, each and every time that they had checked already everything related to the AC system,  and that after that (or the computer one) module was replaced, there will be no other problems with the AC. We replaced the module and I left the Auto shop assured that everything would work correctly.  However, a mere day later (as at first the AC worked normally), as I was driving to my work, a mere 3 mi away from where I resided, the coolant temp rapidly rose almost to the red border - like I said, I had not driven the car for more than 3 mi when the coolant temp rose  almost to the red mark.  I immediately turned off the AC.  After I turned off the AC, the coolant temp reached the normal level almost immediately. Seeing that there was only one conclusion - the work of the AC caused the coolant temperature to reach almost the red border. I brought the car back to Lisa and she told me that they might have missed a leak or something (I must repeat again, that Lisa had informed me only two days that there would be no leaks) and that because of faulty markmanship on their side, she would repair what was wrong with  it for free.  Two days later, Lisa called me to let me know that the car was ready.  It worked for about a day and then the AC completely stopped working.  I brought the car back telling her that this time the AC worked only for a day.  Lisa took it for another inspection.  Again a day later, this time around she charged me an additional $378 for fixing supposedly, that's what she told me,  the final leak of the AC. I agreed to pay even though the fault had been entirely Lisa's or the Auto shop's because they had failed to repair a problem that the shop had already reassured me was 1. Was entirely within their expertise and 2. That they had already repaired everythimg. Then again Lisa told me, for the umptienth time, that the car was ready. As can be guessed by now, after I had picked it up, the AC worked for one more day. - as it stopped working completely day only after I had picked it up from the Auto shop. So, after I  spend $1200 for repair just of the AC, and after repeated promises from Lisa that the AC would be fixed, now I still have the AC in the same condition, off course minus the $1200 that I mentioned above, it was before I bought the car to Dave's Auto shop for the AC repair. I am very, very dissatisfied with the work done on the AC.  The only reason why I had provided two stars was because Lisa fixed the front wheel bearing of the car, otherwise I would have provided 0 Stars for the work. read more

I've been here 3-4 times now with my 2010 Toyota RAV4, both for routine oil changes and repairs, and Lisa is always able to fit me into the schedule. She explains everything in a lot of detail and is thorough and transparent with pricing. When I first brought my car in, the brakes had been making a grinding noise off and on for years and I'd brought it to multiple other shops. I had some mechanics tell me "that's just the way brakes sound", some tell me they could fix it (but it never seemed to be fixed for long) but after taking it to Dave's Auto, I received a quick and accurate diagnosis/repair and my brakes have been great ever since. They referred me to a really nice and reasonable tow company to bring the car over and Lisa walked me through ever step of the repair. Luckily we we were able to order the part and get my car fixed right away. I recommend coming here if you need help with your car. Three cheers for Lisa and her crew! They are as good as it gets; I cannot recommend them enough (and how cool is it to go to a female-owned shop?!). I've brought two cars here several times - an older and a newer one. Lisa talks you through your options and is honest about the costs and your needs. This has been very helpful, especially for my older car. There was one time when they forgot to perform a service (alignment) that I had paid for - which was unfortunate because I had to bring the car back, but when I brought it to her attention, she was truly apologetic and fixed it right away. We have been bringing our vehicles to Dave's for so long, I can't remember how far back we go. We keep returning because over the years Lisa has never failed to be honest and informative about the condition of our 1995 Tacoma and 2004 Accord, whether the problem was big or small -- and we've had our share of big, small and everything in between. She not only explains what the problem is; she gives it context and helps us prioritize. Is it something that needs to be fixed now, immediately? In the next 500 miles? Next time it's in for an oil change? Is this a safety issue or just annoying? A one-time fix or something that needs to happen regularly? She has always been great about letting us know the work is done, communicates promptly if a more involved problem has been discovered, and helps us figure out a way to fix whatever it is.
