They threw my order in the trash without my permission just because I arrived later than they wanted. ORDER WAS ALREADY PAID. No one called me or asked what I wanted them to do. I arrived about an hour later, but I had called several times to let them know I was on my way. And they didn't give me my money back, because "food already was served". But this food in trash. They never asked for my permission. Why does it matter to you if my food got cold? It's my food and my decision. Maybe I wanted to eat it cold. The service was terrible, and the food quality was just as bad. I drove for an hour to get here, only to find out that I had wasted my time, my money and my nerves for nothing. I go every couple weeks and the hot dogs and burgers are great, great taste and service and the fries are very good.

I love me a good chili dog. Dave's is what you would expect a good hot dog place to be. No frills but consistent reasonably priced dogs. The chili had a little kick to it and the hot dog itself was hot, and ready in minutes. The fries weren't the best and the cheese sauce was basic but for the price it's a a good place to go. I don't think I would experiment with other things on the menu but I will keep coming back for a hotdog. read more

Traditional Pushcart Style Dogs in a nostalgic corner deli/diner style storefront. Service is always quick and friendly, you can always have a great conversation especially when Alex is there. Soft buns, perfect mustard that compliments the dogs and a nice amount of topping for the prices. Highly recommend the Mississippi Killer. The hot pepper relish and the chili gives it the perfect amount of kick if you like your chili a little spicier than the normal topping. Definitely worth a stop. read more

Dave's Hot Dogs is now owned by Alex, but the quality of the menu seems to have survived the transition intact. The shop is small with only a 6 stool counter for sitting, and everything else required to walk out the door. Ambiance is 1960s. It sits in a residential neighborhood of Perth Amboy, put in place before zoning stopped this mix of uses. So, it has a dated charm as well as damn good frankfurters. I sat at the counter while Alex prepared my order of three dogs (Texas, Slaw, New York) and the Italian (double dogs, onions, peppers and potatoes in a supersized pizza dough wrap). The conversation was titillating as I learned the origins of the business and its owner. Tons of personality and humor. No charge for the floor show. The regular dogs were good, but pretty much standard for the genre. Small bore sausage with nice spice and snap in regular buns. The big boy Italian had plenty of sautéed onion, green pepper and grilled home fry taters that fell out of the sandwich as soon as it was unwrapped from the foil. Added ketchup and brown mustard from my home stash to complete the two person sammy before first bite. It was a fun and even challenging meal and a half. The combination of ingredients were tasty and well textured so that cleaving through it all was very enjoyable. A fork was needed to pick up all the pieces that fell from the thick wrap with each chomp. The potato chunks were a little dry, and a better frying tuber would enhance the final product. This will be the last time the new Dave's gets me. Nothing is as good as it used to be. Decided to get a couple of chili dogs and they threw some side options at me. Corn nuggets sounded good. I get home to two subpar dogs and corn nuggets coated in powdered sugar. Who the f*** puts sugar on corn? I ate one dog because I was hungry, but the second dog and the sugared corn is going in the garbage where it belongs. Nice little hidden gem we stumbled upon one Saturday afternoon. It's an old school type spot with 4-5 counter seats but we took it to go. They have a pretty big menu. We got 1 chili dog w/ cheese sauce (wiz) 1 cheese dog w/ wiz 1 with ketchup (yes, ketchup) 2 sodas and a bag of chips for $16. Chili cheese dog was great. Hot dogs are a bit small but very good. I felt like I could probably eat 4-5 easily. Love that they over cheese wiz. The two girls in there had our order ready in about 2 minutes so it was super quick. We will be back! read more

This was a wonderful find. It's not easy finding a great, local hot dog place in California, so kudos to New Jersey for coming through with my favorite lunch food! Dave's was even better than I expected. They are set on the edge of a quiet residential street at the end of a tiny strip mall. The variety of hot dog choices is actually pretty huge in relation to its small size. The welcoming and very helpful staff is their best attribute, followed closely by the dogs: modest, but flavorful hot dogs on a fresh bun that doesn't overwhelm the dog, and the fresh add-ons. I ordered the Texas Dog with BBQ onions and shredded cheese. The BBQ onions are basically cooked onion slices in a light BBQ sauce, and while I prefer the onions traditionally caramelized, this was different, but still good. The chili is unlike any I've ever had. It's a traditional meat chili, however the meat is very finely ground and the spices are flavorful with just a tiny bit of a kick, that does not overwhelm the hot dog itself. The breaded onion rings were good nicely and had quality onions. The chip section was very good and they had a nice selection of bottled beverages. A great find to be sure! read more

Stopped in at Dave's HotDogs just off of Pine Ave. In the Morgan Section of Sayreville... Nicole was our server. This restaurant is under New Management and the Manager was present at the time of our visit. He is funny and gracious the eating area and cooking area were clean and well thought out, the walls were covered with entertaining signs and posters, I enjoyed a Bacon Burger and a Bacon n Cheese Hotdog. The burger was a mess, huge bun and weak patty burned to a crisp, just avoid that. The dogs on the other hand were great. Nice snap, chili was spicy, kraut was soft, and they used real cheese, not wiz or nacho. I wished they had a hot cooked onion, but you can't win them all. I grew up in Newark and the original Jimmy Buffs was at the corner from my house, and I went to high school near Dicki Dee's both of these places are famous for the Italian hotdog.
