Once in a while I'll treat myself to what I shouldn't have. These cheeseburgers are on the exception list. Especially late at night. They just hit the spot. I am rarely in the Highland Park/Edison area but if traveling that part of Rt 1 South and hungry, I'll take the Woodbridge Ave (Rt 514 West) exit and get a cheeseburger and fries. Visiting the White Rose up in Roselle reminded me that back in the day, I used to pop into the Highland Park O.G. location once or twice a year. Solid selection of burgers, and I'm not sure if I ever tried their other menu items but I definitely went through some of the sides. I'll say that you get excellent burger value here - you won't find a better burger at this price point so don't even try. Snappy service, by which I really mean it's quick, but not exactly warm and cozy table service. But you'll get your food. The main thing here was I was never a big fan of the atmosphere. The kitchen layout squeezes all the tables to either side. There's not a lot of room to wait inside, so if you want to wait you're practically sitting at someone's table until your number is called, and if you want to dine in, you will have someone next to you at some point(s). I can't compare Highland Park to Roselle. You're either down here or up there. So if you're down in HP and you want a burger that fits your budget, you want White Rose. And you can deal with the rest to enjoy it. read more

White Rose is a low key old school "diner" vibe burger spot. It's no frills, to the point, & simple. There are a few of the "White" locations scattered around NJ. No complaints about any of them. I say 3.5 stars. The meat in the Cali burger is just a strange consistency. Is it really beef? Has a very soft moist texture, almost like a White Castle patty. White Rose is a trip back in time to the 1950's, when dining car restaurants ("diners") were at the height of popularity. Both the actual rail cars and their facsimiles were America's first round attempt at fast food and were very successful. Those that survive today feel like interactive museums that offer a full experience participation - with the touch and feel of yesteryear. Not that the food is always the best, but certainly good enough not to interfere with enjoyment. The burgers here are pretty good - smashed, sautéed onion nibs, lettuce, tomato, mayo on Kaiser roll - with a load of crisp fries adding to the party. The red topped stools attached to the walls and long counter with large steel grill working orders all add to the authenticity. The only major difference is that what once cost only a nickel, pulse pennies for the spuds and soft drink, now hits you up for more like $12. White Rose seems to be a staple here in town for decent fast food. My husband frequents this place for their breakfast sandwiches. My kids love the burgers, hot dogs and cheesesteaks. I usually get the gyro which is chicken or beef. Nice white chicken breast with lettuce tomato and a white sauce, wrapped in a warmed pita. I have also tried their milkshakes. I have heard good things about White Rose Hamburgers over the years. I don't know if I caught them on a bad day, but I don't get it. Yes the service is friendly and fast, my double cheeseburger came out in under 30 seconds. That's because the burger is precooked and kept in a warming tray, so the burger is only warm and not juicy at all. The onions mixed into the patty give it some flavor, but that's about it. The bun is a huge thick roll, so if you want to taste the meat, get a double as the Bun easily overwhelms the meat. The bun also tasted like it was yesterday's roll. I also ordered the chili cheese fries which came out fast and were good. The nostalgia of the place is cool and I love the old style diners. However I don't think I will make another visit, they are in the same league as a White Mana or Hirams. I used to come here with friends after a night of drinking in NB. Now I come here with my husband during normal hours when we can't think of what to eat. Am I regressing? Probably. The food still hits, though - at noon or midnight. I really like their hot dogs but usually succumb to a double bacon cheeseburger and fries. We had our first White Rose when it was in New Brunswick around Rutgers. We had a lot of dates there lol it was one of our fondest memories after a long night. When visiting this location I think a lot has changed. The burgers are now mid with a splash of extra oil. The buns were just regular buns that got super soggy with ketchup. The onion rings tasted something that was frozen and it was deep fried with so much oil soaked up. The place was cute when we ate there but when I left I smelled like I had just finished a shift at a fast food joint lol. Overall, it was alright, I don't think it was the best. Terrible burgers. Dried choppy thin meat with a stale bun. Came in around 7:00PM. One other customer there. Ordered the double bacon cheeseburger and a Cali burger and onion rings. Before we sat down our orders were already ready. Took it outside to eat on the bench. My double bacon cheeseburger was so thin for a double and it came with lettuce and tomatoes. It's like the beef patties have been sitting on the grill for some time. They slapped whatever was there on 2 stale buns, loaded it with lettuce and tomato to make it fluffier. Disgusting. I just visited White Rose Hamburgers in Highland Park. I just got done with my class and I told my friend that there was this cool vintage diner in Highland Park that we should visit. When we got there it had a cool vibe to it. It felt like we were sitting inside a vintage train car. The service was excellent, the food came out almost immediately. The guys who served us were very friendly, patient, and helpful. They take all types of payment, not just cash. The space looked clean, and they had tables that went around the whole interior. Visited on Sunday, April 6th, around noon, for my first meal of the day with a friend. My friend ordered the Philly Cheese Combo, while I went for a Bacon Burger and Chicken Tenders. It operates as a fast-food style diner, without table service. I was pleased with the environment; the vintage decor added a nice touch. I'm giving it three stars mainly because the food didn't quite meet my expectations. Both my friend's meal and mine came with bread that was dry and cold, which I found unappealing. I was especially disappointed with my burger--the bacon was overly hard, and combined with the dry bun, it made for an unpleasant experience. I only managed a few bites before giving up. On the other hand, my friend's Philly Cheesesteak was much better. I tried a bite, and the cheese was melted perfectly, complementing the steak really well. Unfortunately, the chicken tenders were pretty mediocre. With only four pieces costing around $8, I found it overpriced, especially considering the chicken itself was also dry and tough. My wife and I were driving thru snowy holiday traffice and got of Exit 9 from the NJ Turnpike and needed a quick bite before checking into our hotel. The White Rose is also convenient to Rutgers University, nearby Robert Wood Johnson and St. Peter's University hospitals. We both opted for the Cali Cheeseburger, but my wfie was in the mood for a double, while I ordered the single and also wanted a Porkroll Egg and Cheese Sandwich. We also ordered fries and onion rings to share. The White Rose Burger is unique as it is grilled with chopped onions and tastes a bit like a White Castle slider, but is bigger and more like a traditional burger. Remember, if you just order a burger, it's just beef patty and bun. If you want Lettuce, Tomato and Onion, you need to order the "Cali" burger. Also, as we were ordering, I heard a local order fries "well-done". What a great idea! I'd never thought one could order fries like that! Certainly a Pro Tip! Tried this burger joint on a recent visit to Jersey. Pulling up, it's reminiscent of an old school burger and malt shop. The staff were friendly, restaurant was clean and decorated with lots of old photos and newspaper clippings. I ordered the Cali bacon cheeseburger and fries to-go. I had the pleasure of going to white rose hamburgers on 11/5/25 with a few college friends. The outside is deceiving but the inside is cozy and retro. I got a bacon cheeseburger with fries and a vanilla milkshake. The food was cooked practically in front of you and was out before I had even had the chance to sit down! Some of the most efficient service I've ever received!!! My only complaint is that the burger was a little bland and the onions couldn't really be tasted, but it was well cooked and warm with crispy bacon. The fries were crispy and delicious and the milkshake reminded me of McDonald's, sweet and creamy but not overly so. The worker at the register was super nice and efficient at their job. I paid about $17 for my meal which is comparable to other burger joints in the area in my experience. The interior is small but there is ample barstool seating around the walls of the restaurant, although you should be comfortable touching elbows with your neighbor. This long established fresh to made quick but not fast food burger centric 24h eatery has the closest burger to an In and Out you can find in the east. Fresh quality beef, superb crisp made to order bacon, pressed in to caramelized onions, unbelievably soft roll, quality cheese if desired, fresh crisp shredded lettuce and tomatoes. The fries are seriously good, crispy as can be. But sadly the only place you can find Animal style off menu upgrades to your fries and burger is at In and Out, Hollywood California, heads up guys could be a cool addition to the (secret) menu, check Google guys. The combo meals are a go to, served with fries and coffee or soda, and more than just burgers, they serve a kick ass cheesesteak, love the fried fish sandwich, and it's the classic NJ Taylor ham egg and cheese for the breakfast (and anytime) win. This particular White Rose Hamburgers is a long-standing and iconic business in Highland Park, New Jersey. It is also a part of my misspent youth and will forever be a part of my memories associated with my late teens to early to mid twenties when we would often stop at this greasy spoon burger joint on our way home to Edison, New Jersey after a night hitting up the bars and clubs in New Brunswick, New Jersey. When I was back in New Jersey on a trip, I had to hit up White Rose Hamburgers for one of their deliciously greasy burgers and to revisit some amazing memories. Decided to go with a Double Cheeseburger, Cheese Fries, and Mozzarella Sticks. The food here is very good. Very good may be an understatement. The burger was fairly thin but not "smashburger" thin.
