Nestled in a quaint residential neighborhood sits Munckee Bar & Grill. It appears to be a really friendly place where the prices are pretty reasonable. Alissa was barkeep and server. She was up to task with suggestions. The chicken quesadillas were very tasty, with large portions. You might label this as a dive bar, but the place is very clean and not real negative with questionable patronage. A family owned business? I didn't ask because I was occupied with steady conversation during my hour here. Outdoor dining when the weather is agreeable. My only negative would be to lower the music. read more

This is a certified dive. This is where the fonz would hang out if he was around. Beautiful bar, beautiful wood work the night i was there the fireplace was lit and really set a mood. The owner was working the room brought my food came by and checked on it and made some small talk with us then brought us our next round with out asking. You have to add them on social media cause the food specials are crazy! One week it's free wings the next it lobster tails the next shrimp and hot honey quesadillas. I particularly enjoy the warmth from their fireplace and their friendly service. I also like the fact that all the cooking happens right in front of you! There is one cook who busily but very efficiently completes orders in record speed without missing a beat! The bar 's Happy Hour and their daily Blackboard Specials are worth a trip! Revising my rating for the place! In it's dive bar category it's 5 stars. Watching the cook work his magic and then tasting the delicious broiled seafood platter special was heaven. Wifey and I split this entree and there was plenty for both of us. Later in the night we had the best pirogies we ever had. Smothered in sweet sautéed onions. Nestled in a residential neighborhood, the munkee bar is a nice neighborhood bar that definitely shows its been there for a while. Recent renovations are evident giving the place a nicer appeal. The bar features indoor drinks and dining, tables (no table service), and outdoor seating as well as a place to smoke and keep your drink. The taps are clean and crisp. The chefs prepare all food behind the bar which is visible, which is nice to see how clean they are. They have a nice sized menu of foods and apps that are always available. They also run about 10 specials per day for food. Staff is always curteous. Parking is available on the street but I can see it being an issue during busier hours. Music volume as at a level you can talk over. The bar has ac and isn't afraid to use it. I've eaten about 15-20 different dishes and would say the food is on par dining establishments between casual and fine. read more

This a nice small bar/grill place with tons of character. The outside is unassuming but once your inside you are greeted with a kind and warm staff and feel comfortable right away.... (be warned order your food right away there is only one cook and he cooks right in front of you ( love it)... so if its busy it will take some time to get your food ... but it's worth it ... Quintessential small town bar friendly crowd, good service comfortable atmosphere. Good value outstanding burgers, fries cooked to perfection all the small details covered. Had the fried flounder sandwich last visit could not find anything wrong with it. Generous portion, crispy batter and tasty sides. Wife had the wings while we would not call them stupendous held their own succulent and delicious. It's really about the atmosphere I cannot say enough, South Amboy was the town of my youth some fifty years later stepping into the Munckee was like going back in time. Usually at the Monkey Bar I order Fish or Wings tonight the Quesadilla Special menu was a Bacon Cheeseburger Quesadilla, gave it a shot and was not disappointed, the meat was great grilled to perfection and just enough jalapeños to make you finish your drink. This is the best neighborhood bar I've been to in a long time and I frequently come here for the service and the food. Staci, Sonja, and Brooke will treat you like family, and Hector is a hidden gem of a chef. He could easily be the chef of a high end restaurant in NYC, but he chooses to cook here. You would not do better for perfectly prepared food anywhere else. He is the most dedicated chef I've ever seen. 10 stars! read more

I've been here SO many times. Food is hit or miss sometimes, but leaning more towards a miss IMHO. It's NOT the cleanest place for sure. The bartenders and cooks tend to put the tongs on the handle of the oven which is below the grill. Every time he or she goes to open the oven door, guess where those tongs touch? Yes, the floor! How do I know this? Well the bar is U shaped, with the grill at the top of it. I've ordered food at times and waited thirty to forty minutes to get it. The ONLY plus is it's hot, when I do get it. They have some decent beer on tap, nothing special. Most of the crowd here drinks Miller Lite and Coors Light...gag! But the do have Sam Adams seasonal and Guinness on tap. You'll pretty much find nothing but locals here. Some of them are nice and some of them are...well you know. Good luck finding parking! read more

Not a great choice for food, definitely don't use door dash, they don't know how to manage digital orders. I have eaten there 2 or 3 times. Its a dive bar with an open kitchen directly behind the bar. Very odd for this area, I don't remember seeing anything like it before. The first time we ordered for pickup during the 2020 pandemic the food was just ok but we wanted to support locals. A friend wanted to door dash and we picked them. What showed as a 30-40 minute dash took over two hours and they rejected two drivers who tried to pick up the food. We ended up canceling the order and calling to see what the problem was. Overall if your out drinking there already and your hungry you will be ok but don't go there for the food. read more
