Cozy diner located right in the heart of downtown South Amboy, just across from the train station. We decided to give it a try and went with some friends for breakfast. Decent menu with reasonable prices, but quite a few things we wanted were not available, so it definitely narrowed down our options. Disappointed -- Not the Same Anymore Sad to say, I've been back twice recently -- once for lunch and a few days later for breakfast -- and the food just isn't the same since the main cook passed away. The staff and owner are truly exceptional people, and I wish I could leave a better review based on that alone. Unfortunately, the quality of the food has dropped noticeably and is now below average. Yesterday, I signed onto "Too Good To Go" app, where you can purchase day old food and goods for half price. I chose Broadway Diner in South Amboy, NJ, pick-up reserved and paid for ($6.89) for 1PM today. I arrived on time, announced my reservation, and was given a plastic bag of food "garbage" for my hard-earned money. There was a cold toasted white bread puny shrunken sandwich of turkey and wilted lettuce, accompanied by a small plastic of dreadful-looking pasta salad of some sort. I was disgusted and took the plastic bag and tossed it in my dumpster when I got home. I am not blaming the To Good to Go people...they are trying out a good thing for people who want to save a buck or two; but they should never deal with the Broadway Diner again, and neither will I, nor should you! read more

Biscuits and gravy are absolutely terrible. They were so bad, I threw them away. Omelet was a bit better, but not by much. I will say, my wifes chocolate chip pancakes looked a lot better, so I'll go with a 2, but my meal was a 1. Never again. read more

Stopped in for my first time here today. Right across from the train station in South Amboy, where the history shines through in its design. Located on the main ave, im sure causes a decrease in customers because of the awkward parking situation but the food was good! Simply got a nice cup of joe and water and after scanning the menu for a great find I settled with their Irish Eggs Benedict, with corned beef. Heavy for breakfast but what a great concept! I'm sure this would be amazing after a big night of drinking. The egg was cooked so perfectly, It couldn't have been any better! Also tried their chocolate chip pancakes, yum! The food is very average by NJ diner standards. Compared to the food you get in South Amboy, this is not bad. The prices are extremely reasonable. You kind of get what you pay for. So after going to the same diner all the time I figured let me give Broadway diner a chance. My first impression was they have a old ambiance which I didn't mind. The booths had ripped taped up cloth. I ordered scrambled eggs, bacon and French fries. The plate they served me by breakfast was hard to eat with. The plate was really small and barley had room to hold the food. I ordered pancakes which tasted very bland to me. Even the Syrup didn't give it justice. I had my kids with me they brought out my kids drink in a arrow plastic sip a cup with the built in straw. Which was cool except the straw was all chewed up I guess from previous children chewing on the straw. I wasn't to happy about that. The staff was friendly but not the most accommodating. We had to flag down the waitress rather then her coming to ask if we are ok. And by all means I'm not trying to bash this establishment I'm just giving my honest review. Look. This is an okay place. I like eating here, but it tastes like something you can make at home. I dont want to eat home style meals at a diner, thats why i go to a diner lol. The staff was more than perfect, nothing to complain about there, however, the place has an unfinished vibe to it. Like its not done or in the middle of a reno. All in all, its a 3/5. Passing through this small town with my gf and we were craving a good diner breakfast. Needless to say we came to the right place. She ordered the Polish breakfast that came with kielbasa, eggs, and homefries. I had the eggs benedict (my favorite) with homefries, and we split a side of breakfast sausage. Everything was great, including the coffee. The homefries are worth noting, whatever you order make sure it comes with a side of these. The waitress was very sweet. Growing up in Jersey we always loved our neighborhood Diners. This one is on the smaller side but has really great food. If you are in need of some good comfort food like breakfast for dinner or fish and chips this place has it all with their extensive menu. They offer dinner specials and basically anything you feel like. The servers are great! Would definitely recommend as this is the place all the locals go. read more

Mixed bag here. We came on a muggy day, and it was quite hot inside. I considered leaving before ordering, but we decided to stay. The food was a mix of good and bad. The boss platter comes with french toast, eggs, sausage, bacon, and ham. They are not big on presentation here. The plates were unappealing. The french toast was actually quite good. The bacon was thinner than preferred. The ham was ok. The sausage was a pale patty, and only browned on one side. The over easy eggs were suitably runny, but the whites were under done. The burgers were handmade patties, which would normally be a good thing, but they were very uneven and cooked unevenly. Parts were overcooked, and parts were cold and raw. The Benedict was quite tasty. The pancakes tasted like biscuits(not a good thing) and had a hint of garlic. The home fries were pretty good. All in all, more bad than good here. This diner is amazing!! The service and food are like no other. The staff are super friendly and accommodating and the overall vibe is very relaxing. We have visited the Broadway Diner many times and even though it was never the greatest, it was good and convenient. Today we pay the most expensive breakfast for for the littlest omelettes. We are giving 2 stars as the service is very nice and waitress is always welcoming and attentive but unless you want to feel like you are being ripped off. Don't go there. read more

Love this place! The owner really makes you feel like family. We were recently there for breakfast with Santa and my kids loved it! Santa was really sweet and not scary to the kids, at all. Our food was good as always and I love their consistency. Eat and be social like you're supposed to. Too often we gobble our food down and run off in a hurry (to nowhere). Don't do that here. This experience was fine. The place is very cute and clean, but the service and food were just fine. We used a restaurant.com certificate, so make sure to check that out before visiting! My husband ordered a chicken parm sub and received a chicken parm dinner. No biggie, really, but he never received the soup/salad that goes along with the dinner. The food tasted fine, but there was plenty of it. The kids mac and cheese is just the kind from the box. My kid was happy, but $5 for that is frustrating. My other kid order kids french toast with bacon. It was one slice of bacon and half a slice of bread. The kids meals are for under 10, and my 8 year old was starving. Skip the kids meals and just order from the adult menu for them. My food was large; I enjoyed the tomato rice soup and took half my entree home, but my entree was just fine. The real frustration came from service. One of two tables and had to ask for refills on drinks plus she seemed oblivious to our spill, handing me two napkins when I asked for more in the midst of cleaning up my kid's mess. We came to Broadway diner after church on a Sunday for lunch. We were seated immediately and our waitress greeted us quickly and got us our drinks. All in our party of four were very happy with our food. Food arrived hot and as ordered. Kids had a cheesesteak and a chicken quesadilla. My wife and I had a burger and cup of chili, both were clearly home made and very tasty. Menu wasn't the typical huge diner menu but had great selections which is probably why they can keep it fresh and tasty. Place has a great small town feel and again service was excellent. The food was horrible in every way, I asked the waitress if they were training a new chef? She said "ohh no the owner prepaired it". My husband and I attempted to have breakfast here for the second time in two weeks and both times the diner was closed at 9am on a Saturday but the door sign says they open at 7am on Saturdays. I wonder how a place stays in business when they don't ever seem to be open. read more

Poor environment.. silverware was dirty and witnessed the waitress clean a table and replace it with new silverware. Makes me wonder if they thoroughly clean their silverware. Was also surprised with food under the table and a small roach by the bathroom door. I will never return to this establishment again. read more
