I write this review to provide a first rate review for the amazing job that PJ Painting…read more did for the exterior of my house. I had reviewed several exterior painters, ten in all to be exact. Based on the quotes I was receiving PJ Painting was fairly priced. In addition, the owner of the company, Phil Barkalas, personally came by to perform the estimate. Out of all the companies that provided estimates, Phil was the most detailed oriented and explained the entire process required to get my house back in shape. In addition, my house is currently 90 years old and hadn't been painted in 20 years until I moved in. Other companies didn't address the age of the house neither the condition issues that were prevalent. Phil provided an honest assessment and provided me a written estimate with everything that would be included in the job such as scraping, sanding, priming, caulking and painting the house. He included the number of coats of paint as well as a premium Benjamin Moore paint, best on the market, that would be used to paint the house. On the other hand, the other nine companies that provided estimates, did not go into much detail, and only provided a verbal estimate, not very professional at all. Who operates a business and doesn't provide a written estimate for the work they will do? So when I dealt with PJ Painting it put my mind at ease. The crew that painted my house, including the owner, were punctual and very meticulous as if they were painting their own home. Each day they made tremendous progress. The payments were broken up, so that as the job progressed, I would pay in installments, which not every company would do, many companies want a large lump payment down, which I couldn't afford to do, but PJ painting was the exception. The job is now complete and PJ Painting has exceeded my expectations. The exterior of my house was extremely weather beaten and peeling. Now my house is the cornerstone of the neighborhood. Estimated time of completion = 2 weeks. I paid him the first installment and he started right away. He worked consistently for a few days. But then the absences began - he kept me apprised at first but then he just wouldn't show up for days. It has been more than 3 months and he's still not completed the basement. I've given him a $1000 advance for another project and he has not shown up for work since. He also has $500 worth of my stuff from Ikea that he picked up but never delivered. To be fair, he did mention that he had a personal task to attend to but that was in late June and I've not heard from him since. The most frustrating part is not responding to calls and messages (I have all logs). I've explained to him several times the urgency of finishing this work but he seems to have ignored it so far. A month after purchasing our home last year 2016 we contacted Tidewater & Crew to come over to consult us and give us an estimate on having our kitchen and bathrooms caulked and grouted. (Best rule of thumb is to have this done about every 6 years plus, depending on how bad the old grout is coming off and crumbling.) Ed contacted us back fast and we were able to get him scheduled to come over and look at our problem areas. He's friendly, professional, extremely knowledgeable and shows up on time. He did an excellent job throughout the whole house. When Ed was re-grouting our master bathroom walk in shower he came upon an issue we had with the shower floor. All around the floor's edges the grout was wet! He removed the old grout and we let the shower sit unused for over a week to see if it would dry out, well it never did. He advised us to look into this thinking something might be wrong with the pan liner underneath and the pitch looked wrong. ( Later we discovered after having the bathroom floor pulled up that indeed the pitch was off causing the water to flow back into the walls and not downward into the drain. Also when the drain was installed it was never set down/screwed into the wooden bottom floor, it sat about a half an inch above so it wasn't allowing the shower floor to drain properly! And the original pan liner was compromised due to someone putting nails in the inside causing water to leak through it to its underside to the cement. Water went the whole way down past the cement reaching the wooden flooring structure of the house underneath. We caught this just in time before it reached the room bellow's ceiling! ) Thank you again Ed for all your wisdom!
