Maybe he's a good or even great surgeon. I don't know and after my first appointment with him. We spent 95% of him building nothing but medical terms. He never answered my question and even worse never really talk to me. Apparently, he believes in medical schooling 101. He never explained why he chose the next procedure. Terrible customer service. I called twice last week Friday left voicemail and sent an email, nobody called back or replied to my email from yelp. I called this morning to talk to somebody, the lady who answered the phone is not very friendly or professional in any way. She sound like I was bothering her and annoyed, instead of apologizing and offering assistance. I was disappointed I told her this is terrible I'll just go to somebody else then hang up. Dr. David Chang , with the Marina spine center, should loose his license. My husband had a compressed fracture. We went to Dr. Chang for consultation and showed him the test results. Dr. Chang informed us that my husband had cancer and a serious infection. He actually gave us referrals to an oncologist and a infectious disease physician. I have kept the copies of his referrals. None of this was accurate. Dr. Chang saw my husband in February of 2018. I am writing this in August 2018. None of his diagnosis was correct, there was no cancer and no infection. The compressed fracture healed and my husband is now benefitting from physical therapy and is working regularly with a trainer. How could Dr. Chang have suggested that is beyond explanation. read more

Dr Chang changed my life! He is the most caring, detailed, smart, funny, talent, charismatic doctor I've ever gone to. I suffered from horrible, debilitating sciatica for over 2 years. I had been going to UCLA for epidurals and they never recommended surgery or any other treatment options even though the epidurals simply made my pain manageable for 4 weeks. I was having to use wheelchairs and couldn't do many of the things I loved doing. After 5 epidurals at UCLA I finally made an appointment with Dr Chang. He spent an hour with me reviewing my MRIs, X-rays and performed a physical exam. He really took the time to think about about the best option for my case. He recommended surgery which was a terrifying idea for me. He was upbeat and confident which made me feel safe throughout the entire process. Once I woke up from surgery my sciatic pain was totally gone. He and his team were incredible throughout the process and I was up walking by myself a few hours after surgery. Dr Chang spoke with me in recovery, in my hospital room and he & his team were available on call for me day & night for any questions. I had a cyst on my spine and had constant shooting pains down my leg. Marina Spine Center was recommended to me by a friend after I was told by a different doctor that I needed a spinal fusion. My friend had surgery for a disk problem from a different doctor in the office that was completely successful. Dr. Chang recommended a Laminotomy, which is minimally invasive, but because of Covid I had to wait a couple of months until the hospitals opened up for surgery. The surgery was done at Cedars-Sinai as an outpatient, and I experienced immediate relief. Over the next couple of months I did have a few times that the numbness would flair up but was told to give it some time. After going through several weeks of physical therapy to strengthen my core muscles, all symptoms were relieved. It is now 5 months later and I have no pain or weakness and have resumed all activities. Their office staff was very helpful and responsive from day 1 and I am so thankful that I found this office and Dr. Chang! read more

Dr Chang is an amazing doctor. I've used my body over the years and yet continue to workout most days. I first saw Dr Chang 2009 regarding what I thought was a back problem from a 1988 fusion. I was wrong. He assured me my back was strong & referred me to a hip doctor. Needless to say, he was on target. I had occasion to return to his office for pain shooting through my right (opposite from previous issue) hip and down my leg. My PT suggested my back was the issue. Dr Chang saw me the day I called. Can you say lucky! He examined me, made a suggestion for care as I was leaving the next day for a 4 day trip to Boston. The meds he prescribed were perfect for my degree of pain. The following Friday, I had an appointment for MRI & CT scan. The results were electronically sent to his office. I walked across the street where he saw me after a short delay. I didn't need an appointment due to the possible delays with the tests. The course of treatment prescribed as a result of the scans was conservative. I like that approach. Ultimately, I had surgery August 1, 2013. Dr Chang's followup care was perfect for me. He is my kind of surgeon. He is compassionate, caring and personal with every aspect of his care. Explained my problem to what I had not heard with HMO Dr's of course. Changed back to straight medicare so could seek out a good surgeon. He has been there for 15 years. Injured my back pretty severely and called a friend of mine who works w/ the NFL and I asked him where he sends his players who have back injuries. He told me i didn't need to look any further than Dr. David Chang. I was and always will be very reluctant to have a surgery, and the first thing that impressed me about Dr. Chang is he didn't want to "cut" right away. First he recommended me to a physical therapist...when the physical therapist told me i was too far gone, i went back to Dr. Chang and we scheduled an epidural which alleviated a lot of the pain, but alas surgery was the next step. I sat down w/ Dr. Chang and his extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff and they walked me through the process...told me exactly what they would do...how long it would take, what i would feel, what i should expect and answered a plethora of my questions. I never felt rushed like i do with most doctors. The day of the surgery he spoke to me prior, put me at ease, and the surgery was a complete success....i was walking without pain THE SAME DAY. Had a follow up 2 weeks post surgery where once again he took a bunch of time w/ me to tll me about the next few weeks/months of recovery...and I'm getting stronger every day. additionally, worth nothing that Dr. Chang's staff at the Marina Del Ray Hospital was standout. I'm very glad I went to Dr. Chang as I ended up needing surgery for my L5-S1. He made sure to exhaust all options before surgery (I had a total of two cortisone shots one in November and one in January). Unfortunately they didn't work so I had a microscopic lumbar discectomy which went really well. One thing I will point out - be sure to bring a list of questions for him as he will review the basics with you but anything beyond that isn't brought up. He's very skilled at his profession and I would feel comfortable going back to him for any future problems. read more

I live out near Palm Springs and had a 7 month run up by a medical group out here so it was time for a second opinion. Long time high school friend and swimmer in Northern California suggested the Watkins Group (now the Marina Spine Center) so we decided that my health came first over a 200 mile round trip to the West side. After running through my X ray's & MRI he concluded that the opinion stated by the initial group out in Redlands was correct but offered another entry procedure that I liked better. In addition he ran some additional X Ray's on my hips (which effect the back) and informed me that I had some additional with my right hip that I needed to be aware of. Dr. Chang is EZ to talk to and his team (Dr. Mellman & his P.A. Shawn Bond) are a great support staff as this was the first major procedure that I have had. Tomorrow will be 8 weeks to the day since my lower back procedure was done at the Marina Del Rey Hospital (just across the street from their offices) and my back pain is all but gone now. Next week I am going to see the Hip surgeon in Santa Monica that Dr. Chang suggested. The bad hip that he spotted earlier looks to be the problem with the ongoing pain in my groin now so if this Hip Doctor at Saint John's is as good as Dr. Chang is it could be another home run for me! I am not a big fan of Hospitals and Doctors but if you need help this is about as good as you can ask for. read more

There are not enough words available to express my true appreciation and gratitude for Dr. Chang! We were referred to Dr. Chang from a friend who raved about his positive experience and outcome with Dr. Chang and his staff. My wife was admitted to the ER with horrific nerve pain down the entire left leg. When I paged Dr. Chang, he not only called me back within minutes, but he actually showed up to the ER in order to put my wife (and me) ease. This alone was huge! Dr. Chang is immensely smart, knowledgeable, conservative and HIGHLY personable. He is also not one to rush into surgery, unless it's absolutely necessary. Dr. Chang performed a Discectomy on my wife on a Thursday, and the following day, she was discharged from the hospital with NO PAIN in her leg (only surgical pain which was expected). Dr. Chang is now our hero and I would recommend him to anyone who is in need of a Orthopedist (spine). Dr. Chang's PA, Shawn, is also a CLASS ACT who also played an integral role in helping my wife!!!!! We are so fortunate to have found Dr. Chang! In my opinion, Doctor Chang completely missed diagnosed my problem or worse he knew what it was and did not explain it to me and was padding up his wallet by urging me to get more Cortisone shots even though the first two didn't bring me any relief. He neither explained why the first two shots didn't work or why he was urging me to have another two Cortisone shots, when the first two didn't help me. I lost all trust in him as a person and as a physician. I spent 6 months with several noninvasive therapies and found some relief but I was still in pain and was very limited in what I could do. So finally after speaking to a couple more Orthopedic Surgeons, one surgeon did a simple X-Ray and proved what I had and demonstrated it to me. After 7 months of not knowing what I had and not knowing if I should have surgery, I had an answer. I am greatly relieved that I know what is wrong with me and that surgery is the answer. I guess it all worked out for the best, because there is no way I would have Dr. Chang perform surgery on me. I deeply distrust his ethics and judgment. In my case all he wanted to do was give me Cortisone shots and did not care about my health or my well being, only about getting patients into his operatory and performing procedures so he can get paid, whether it would help them or not. read more

I never felt pressured to have surgery and I was very impressed by how thorough he was when reviewing my test results. i just went through lower back surgery consisting of spinal fusion of 3 vertebrae and decompressive laminotomy for stenosis which Dr. David Chang performed. He came highly recommended and he did not disappoint. I started my adventure with Dr. Chang over a year ago. After consulting with him, I tried two cortisone shots over a period of 8 months, with disappointing results. The first shot left me pain free for a month. After a few months, I tried a second shot which only worked for two weeks. I was impressed that Dr. Chang never tried to pressure me into having surgery. He simply told me my options and all the risks. It is the third week since my surgery and my pre-surgery symptoms consisting of severe spinal stenosis and sciatica and I am happy to report that I am 100% pain free.
