Patient Feedback: I saw this ENT for a minor ear issue. While I don't expect every doctor to have perfect bedside manner, my experience during this visit left me uncomfortable. The doctor asked about my profession, but before I could answer, he interrupted and guessed that I was an administrative assistant. While I've held that role before and respect it deeply, the assumption -- and the way it was delivered -- came across as dismissive and unprofessional. He also explained post-care instructions in a tone that felt overly condescending, including how to avoid getting water in my ear as if I'd never taken a shower before. I came for medical care, not to be talked down to. Additionally, the office staff didn't inform me that the doctor was running 30 minutes behind. A simple heads-up would have gone a long way toward showing respect for patients' time. I recognize that other reviews speak highly of this physician, so perhaps I caught him on an off day. Still, the interaction felt unnecessarily patronizing and left a poor impression. I will not be back. It's also worth mentioning that the office requires a credit card to be kept on file "just in case of charges." In all my years of visiting various doctors, I've never encountered that policy before, and it felt out of step with standard practice. read more

Dr Kieff seems like a pretty good ENT. The audiologist is very nice and (as far as I could tell) very competent & thorough. The admin staff, however... For some reason they use both MGB Patient Gateway and AthenaHealth, and it appears that they don't have either one set up properly. As a result, they besiege patients with reminders, confirmations, and early check-ins. Seven calls in less than a week. Text after text. (After STOP after STOP.) Emails upon emails. I called to make an appointment. No sooner had I hung up than the phone rang with their number. Thinking they were calling back to let me know there was a problem or something, I rather foolishly answered. Nope. Automated reminder about the appointment I had literally just made. Productive! And their response? Breathtaking lack of empathy, self-awareness, and responsibility. It's not their fault. Nothing's their fault. Never. Why are you even talking to us about this? Can't you see we're not interested? Twice as frustrating as all the calls and messages combined. "The computer did that, not me." Um, actually, only half the calls were from the computer. The rest were from two of them sitting five feet apart who didn't coordinate. Can't blame the computer for that! "We don't control that." Really? Who do they think controls it? Because we're old enough to see a lot of doctors pretty often in this house, and they're the only ones with this problem. And, as has been elsewhere observed, they have a bizarre obsession with having a credit card on file so they can bill the patient for whatever, whenever. On my first visit, I pulled out my Apple Card (which does not have any visible card information) and they just about lost their minds. They nearly refused to keep the appointment because they couldn't make a copy of it in case they needed to charge me later. (Spoiler alert: they didn't.) They had to get Dr Kieff to make a special exception to their policy. And, as with the notification problem, this appears to be entirely because they don't know and don't care how the technology the practice depends on actually works. While I was in the waiting room, the person ahead of me checking out was complaining about the exact same thing. And they got the exact same dismissive response I eventually got, along with some very unnecessary sarcasm. When my turn came, the minute I told them I was frustrated by this, they sternly told me to leave. (Which I did, never to return.) I think they knew I was going to ask to speak to the Doctor about it since they clearly didn't care. They're also the ones that answer the phones and open the mail. My guess is that while they surely generate a lot of these types of complaints, they're also able to keep those complaints from ever making it to the doctor. So I suspect Dr. Kieff, who, again, seems like a pretty decent ENT, is not aware of much of this. Which is a shame. read more

I never write reviews but couldn't help myself here. If I could give 0 stars I would. First off, I went to Dr. Kieff for pain in my left ear. Right away he was extremely sexist and condescending when he joked that I was simply a homemaker after replying to his question about what I did, which is administrative work at home for a non profit organization helping veterans. He did a whole exam, couldn't find anything wrong but removed a tiny bit of wax, prescribed antibiotics for a small amount of redness and suggested I come back for a hearing test later that week, and for a follow up visit in 6-8 weeks. Not long after, I receive a bill for over $200 for the hearing test and another $753 bill for the office visit, $200 of which was to remove that bit of wax! I called the office and told them that the bill was outrageous, that I could not pay it nor would I. I realize that I had not yet met my deductible and expected to pay something but almost $1k?? Dr. Kieff's office charged my card without my authorization after I refused to pay the bill. He is a rip off and taking advantage of insurance companies with his prices. I had sinus surgery with Dr Kieff and have had Botox and facial fillers. The first time I had fillers and Botox done I went to a dermatologist who is considered the top dermatologist in the area. After my great experience with sinus surgery (and after seeing the amazing before & after cosmetic surgery pics in his office), I decided to let Dr Kieff give me Botox instead. Now that I can compare, I can't imagine going to a spa or even to a dermatologist for Botox or fillers. I beg anyone who cares about their face to choose a cosmetic surgeon over any other physician for Botox and fillers. It is simply undisputed that the depth and level of medical training is different between a dermatologist and a facial plastic surgeon/otolaryngologist! Luckily this was made clear to me personally after experiencing the difference for myself. The dermatologist I first went to was fast and rushed. She jabbed at my face and the next day I had bruising. Dr Kieff in contrast takes his time every time! A lot of time. You can tell he is a perfectionist with a lot of experience. I also want someone to treat my face with caution not like an object on a conveyor belt. I have no bruising with Dr Kieff's treatments and by now I'm middle aged and have had many treatments over many years. I can't recommend him highly enough. His staff is also great! A very conscientious & caring group. I plan on having cosmetic surgery with Dr Kieff when it's time. Now that I've experienced his skills I never want to go to anyone else (and I am picky and perfectionistic). If I ever moved from the area, I'd travel just to be seen by Dr Kieff. read more

Dr. Kieff performed my septoplasty and rhinoplasty surgery in November of 2014. Then, this past month, I returned to him because of some very uncomfortable inner ear issues. It turned out I had Sudden Hearing Loss, and there is a10 day window in which to be put on a tapering course of steroids in order to try to prevent the hearing loss from becoming permanent. Not only is Dr. Kieff is a quick thinking, intelligent, and caring doctor, but he makes sure to provide his patients with amazing availability for any follow up questions or concerns. In addition, his office staff is made up of some of the kindest people I've ever met! I felt so well taken care of at Dr. Kieff's office, and 2 weeks after starting the steroids, my hearing is back!! Dr. Kieff is an incredible doctor. In January 2016 I finally had septoplasty and turbinates reductions surgery performed by him. My only regret is that I should have done it much, much earlier - I had trouble breathing through the nose for as long as I could remember. It was a life-changing experience for me to be able to always breathe through my nose freely. Many patients experience deterioration after that type of surgery, and sometimes things go all the way back to where they were. I have not experienced any changes since the surgery for more than four years - Dr. Kieff is widely regarded to have golden hands. He also has awesome staff, is very thorough in his examinations, and a pleasure to deal with overall. I could not be happier and would recommend him and his staff to anyone. read more

My rating for Dr. Kieff has nothing to do with his medical skills - it is entirely based on my interactions with him and his staff during my failed attempt to become a patient. But please pay heed, because if you choose to do business with Dr. Kieff, this review *will* be relevant to you. When I arrived for my first appointment with Dr. Kieff in September, 2014, I was given several new-patient forms to fill out. Mostly the usual stuff - this is how much they charge for a missed appointment, etc. But one of the forms I had to sign contained language that seemed to say, in effect, that the copyright for anything I was to say or write in the future regarding Kieff's medical practice would be permanently and exclusively assigned to their practice or the doctor. I don't have the exact wording (keep reading...). I crossed out the copyright-related sections of the form and signed it. This Yelp review is only made possible because I did NOT sign Dr. Kieff's form before crossing out these terms. If I had, my review would be on Yelp one day, and could be gone the next. I met with Dr. Kieff, who refused to treat me unless I agreed to give him the copyright to anything I might say or write about his practice. He told me that it was to protect himself from negative reviews and comments on sites like this one, and ludicrously claimed that it did not affect my freedom of speech. I then asked for a copy of the signed form, and Dr. Kieff refused this as well. When I asked why, he told me that it was "proprietary." This explains why I cannot quote the form verbatim. So I obtained a refund of my co-pay and left. Sure, nothing in this agreement would prevent someone from posting a negative comment about Dr. Kieff's practice on Yelp or other social media sites. But as soon as the comment appeared, the agreement would kick in and Dr. Kieff would have the right to demand that it be taken down. This is wrong on so many levels...I will try to cover a few of them. If someone asks you to sign a form, and you do, they must be obligated to give you a copy of it. It's wholly unacceptable to refuse to provide a copy. As the Better Business Bureau of Eastern Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island and Vermont writes, "Whether required by law or not, you are entitled to a copy of any contract or agreement you sign." The reason that doctors in particular are worried about negative reviews is that due to confidentiality obligations, they can't always respond directly to patient reviews. This does put the doctor at a disadvantage compared to many other professions. But doctors are well-compensated, and a good doctor is likely to have many more positive reviews than negative ones. Most complaints about doctors are related to non-treatment matters, much like this complaint I'm making right now. Dr. Kieff is the first physician I've ever complained about publicly. Requiring prospective patients to assign future copyrights as a condition for treatment seems coercive and unconscionable. When people visit a doctor, it is almost always with fear, trepidation, feelings of intimidation and confusion, and often accompanied by physical pain. When in such a vulnerable condition, to demand that patients effectively surrender their rights of speech as a condition of treatment is simply inexcusable. Note that this is sprung on patients only minutes before their first scheduled appointment, and embedded within verbiage that many patients probably don't even read. This legal gag helps poorly-performing doctors to continue their practices under the radar. The benefit to patients (through the abilities to learn about prospective doctors, and to provide much-needed feedback to doctors) should outweigh the benefit to physicians (the freedom from bad press). And how would this even work? For example, if Drs. Smith and Jones both used this copyright assignment provision, then who would own the copyright to a tweet like, "Dr. Jones is a far greater physician than Dr. Smith will ever be?" And while Dr. Smith might want to have that tweet removed, Dr. Jones would love to keep it online. Or say something notable happened during my treatment - would a TV station be willing to interview me if they wouldn't own the copyright to the interview? Or what if I wrote an autobiography and wanted to mention my treatment - would anyone publish the book, seeing as they wouldn't own the full copyright to it? And if I did include mention of Dr. Kieff in an autobiography without disclosing this copyright provision to the publisher, would I then be opening myself up for liability of some sort? You shouldn't need a lawyer to go see a doctor. Professor Eric Goldman has written an excellent article in Forbes about this rare but scary tactic. For general information, you can do an Internet search such as "eric goldman doctor reviews" (without quotes). So if you want to become a patient of Dr. Kieff, be prepared to give up your ability to let people know how it goes. read more

I am not surprised to read the review about signing documents prior to seeing Dr. kieff as a patient. I suffered a wrong site surgery operation after putting my trust in Dr. Kieff. I went to him for a simple procedure - removal of a basal cell carcinoma from my face. When I removed the bandage after my surgery, the BASAL CELL WAS STILL THERE and I had a hideous gash on my face. I called dr. k's office and he insisted that I must be "wrong". I should have known when he was so cold and detached upon first evaluation of my problem that I should have RUN out of his office. The experience is still,chilling in retrospect. Fortunately, I hired a lawyer and the problem was quickly resolved. I,still have the scar and bad memories of this experience, tho. So many good things to be said about Dr. Kieff and his staff. From the consultation to post op, Dr. Kieff and his team demonstrated professionalism, knowledge and expert care. Dr. Kieff performed a septoplasty and rhinoplasty along with turbinate reduction. The confidence I had in Dr. Kieff made surgery much less nerve racking. I am so happy with the results! I can breath better, no more drippy nose and the shape is just what I wanted, still me, but straightened out. He listened to what I wanted and provided his expertise for us to achieve the right results. I can't thank Dr. Kieff and his team enough. We had a very different experience than the other reviewers here. I was sad to see the negative reviews because we had a great experience. My son was having chronic raspy voice and nose bleeds so we went to see Dr. Kieff. His PA did an excellent job of thoroughly questioning us before the Dr. came in. It was a good to actually have a health care provider spend time discussing our situation before any tests or diagnoses. The Dr. ruled out a allergy right away after performing a scope procedure and provided meds that cleared up the nose bleeds. Now working on the voice issues. I received a recommendation for Dr. Kieff from a friend at work who had a septoplasty to correct a deviated septum. I had dealt with difficulty breathing and trouble sleeping through the night... and worse yet, the snoring was preventing my wife from sleeping and was embarrassing if we would stay with friends. I entered into this with alot of skepticism as to the effectiveness of the procedure - would I even notice a difference? would my wife get some rest? Well, it is 4 months after the surgery and it has been the best 4 months of sleep my wife and I have gotten in 10 years. My snoring is about 60% better and the noise very reduced to where she is not waking up and neither am I. The first week after surgery is uncomfortable, but the moment you get the splints out, you can breath like you never have. My insurance covered nearly all the procedure, but I would have gladly paid more given the benefits and results. Thank you Dr Kieff! read more

I am a practicing dentist. I treat and see many patients so I have some experience in health care. I saw Dr. Kieff about six months ago for throat pain and loss of hearing. I have had chronic ear issues for many years. He diagnosed and treated my issues. I can hear again!!! It's really a miracle. I have been to at least ten ENTs over the years and Dr. Kieff is absolutely the best. He is an excellent practitioner and a wonderful personable caring person. I went to Dr. Kieff in June or July after dealing with chronic sinus issues. He very quickly discovered that I had a deviated septum and sinuses that were not draining. We talked about surgery, but Dr. Kieff was incredibly understanding when I said I wanted to avoid it if possible and sent me to an allergist. After a month, we both agreed that surgery was the best option, and the ladies at the front desk got me scheduled for a surgery within a month. The operation went flawlessly, I had a septoplasty, sinus surgery, and turbinate reduction. My recovery was amazing and I was back to work less than a week after! Dr. Kieff was always very honest with me and came up with a treatment plan that was best for me. The receptionists are the sweetest and always worked with me to make sure my appointments were at a convenient time, even calling me if there was a cancellation and they could fit me in at a time that worked better for me.
