I actually just changed my dermatologist to Dr. Katz in the Galleria Area because Powell Dermatology has gone so far downhill. I had been going to him for at least 10 years. My father went to him even longer. The place used to be amazing, but it's not that way anymore. Firstly, the time it takes to get an appointment. I use to be able to get in very quickly, maybe a couple weeks TOPS. I can barely even get 2 appointments a year now. I called recently and was told their first appointment was in September. Really? That's a little far off for an appointment! It's June as I write this. Part of the reason is that, I believe Dr. Powell needs more help in the office, more doctors. I don't know what the reason is, but this place could seriously benefit from some more doctors. If you have ANY type of emergency, what are you supposed to do? All I needed was a steroid shot. Takes 5 minutes. Powell Dermatology wouldn't do it. Went to Dr. Katz, whom I've never even been to and they got me right in in a matter of 2 days for an appointment that, what do you know, was 5min long. Second, IF you ever do get an appointment, have fun in that waiting room. I've had to walk out multiple times after extremely long waits. I don't have all day to sit in a waiting room and I'm willing to bet not many others do either. In my opinion, too big of a practice. Not enough Dr.'s. Thirdly, Dr. Powell use to be very personal with his patients. He was a family friend and you could tell. He genuinely cared. He has no time to care anymore. It's nice that he's got so much business, but damn. I would like an appointment in which I actually felt like more than just another patient. You will usually see Doctor's Assistant's for a majority of your appointment. Lastly, my biggest problem is he refuses to do treatments I want. The steroid shot I've asked for multiple times for my cystic acne, he won't do. I don't know what the reason is, but instead, he puts me on anti-biotics that never do anything. So, after him refusing many times, I sought new help. Had a very troublesome spot come up. Same type of thing I have asked Powell about for years. He always refused. Those spots stayed huge and red forever and when they "went away" they left scars and blotches. Dr. Katz came right in and gave me the shot- no questions asked. It's been 24 hours and the spot is already 75% gone and hardly red at all. She did what Dr. Powell wouldn't and what she did WORKED. Combine this, with the fact that I waited about 10 minutes in the waiting room AND got seen within 3 days, I immediately changed my doctor. Every time I went to Dr. Powell, pretty much all I got was talk about Accutane. He suggests it every single visit. I have told him numerous times I can't take it because of my medical history. Still every time, he comes in and says, "Have we discussed Accutane?" It's been in my file for a good number of years that I can't take it. Yet, every time I come in, we discuss it. Obviously, I am very upset with Powell Dermatology and have been for quite some time. I will be taking my business elsewhere. It's up to you what you want to do. He's a good doctor. My problems lie in other areas. read more

I had the best visit. Skin cancer check. Wendy and Dr. Powell are a great team. They both spent enough time with me. Answered my questions and Checked me out thoroughly! Helped me with questions about my husbands visit and prescription. Those who had a bad visit must have had a bad day themselves. Because the office I visited was 10 out of 10. read more

I've been to see Dr. Powell a few times and had some of the same issues mentioned by others. Long period to even get an appt., over-booked with long wait times is just a few but the lack of empathy towards patients is something I cannot overlook. When the doctor starts a procedure and you are telling him and his nurse that it isn't deadened enough and they don't stop to address it but instead try to rush and finish it, it hurt like hell and is unforgivable. Then when finished left the room faster than Speedy Gonzales. No, hey are you ok or sorry about that. NOTHING! I actually want to feel as if the doctor cares about me as a patient and not another dollar walking in the door. NEVER AGAIN when Dr. Ali is right down the road. I always get the right advice from them and I'm able to get all my questions answered without ever feeling rushed. I have recommended Dr. Powell to all of my family and friends. He is very thorough and always takes the time to listen to my concerns. I credit him with saving my husbands life because he found a melanoma on his leg and the prompt treatment he recommended eliminated the cancer. When I find something great - whether it is a product, service or a Doctor, I feel the need to shout it from the rooftop! I feel that way about Dr. Powell and his staff, without a doubt... I went to several derm doctors, prior to finding Dr. Powell (one doctor prescribed the same drug and gave me the same regimen to follow (which included Dial soap, on my face!) as she did when I was in 6th grade; I was 33 at the time). I am 43 now, have been a patient of Dr. Powell for 5 years and my skin has truly never been better. Having a lovely complexion is addictive and the confidence is a truly welcomed feeling. Dr. Powell took the time to LISTEN to me, he asked questions and he drilled down to the cause of my issues then formulated a regimen and prescribed for ME, rather than a "cookie cutter" solution. Dr. Powell has done the same for my teenage sons, their skin could not be any better. More important to me, than the above, is the diagnosis and treatment Dr. Powell has given my husband, brother, dad and father-in-law, for varying stages of skin cancer. His diligence, keen eye, knowledge and experience has added years to several in my family - to me, this is priceless. I cannot thank Dr. Powell and his staff enough for all that they have done and continue to do for my loved ones and the countless friends I have referred to Powell Dermatology. I learned in health class many years ago that skin is the largest organ in the human body. Interesting thing just happened. I have a rash on my back that I suspect is laundry detergent but it won't stop itching. Should have called another dermatologist but I got lazy and called Dr Powell for an appt. It's convenient. Made an appt for this Thurs but a few minutes later Tiffany with Dr Powell called back to say they read my Yelp review and thought I should go to another Derm office. I agree. I should have but it was still interesting. It was a chance for them to redeem themselves. I don't think they saw it this way. Called Advanced Dermatology and they made an appt for tomorrow. Perhaps they will see me in a reasonable time. I'll keep you posted. read more

edit: upgraded to two stars. doctors office contacted, perhaps prescription medication fault lies with the pharmacy. pharmacy gave one month free meds as some sort of consolation. still wished wait was not so long and my multiple phone calls were returned. could have cleared up the situation. Where is the ZERO star option? Where do I start, okay, lets see.. 1) Waited 1 hour 15 minutes for the DOCTOR'S ASSISTANT to see me. Doctor Powell came in for about 10 minutes, we chatted about my condition (dry scalp, hairfall), then he left. I was 15 minutes late trying to find the place (its kind of in the back), but seriously...1 hour, 15 minutes to see the Doctors Assistant and the Doc for 10 minutes? 2) It was a standard visit, but I get a statement from BCBS stating that the office tried to bill upwards of $200 for the 10 minute visit. Really??? I think I should have reported this as at the end of the statement it said if you feel there may be fraud going on, to notify them. 3) Here's the kicker: My med's ran out 4 weeks ago. 4 weeks ago i contacted my pharmacy to request a refill of my prescription. I call the day after for an update thinking it would be ready and my pharmacy tells me that they faxed the request to Powell's office, and have not heard back. I wait another day,then try again, same thing. Wait another day, try again, same thing. Wait till the next week, try again, same thing. Okay, now I call the doctors office, leave a message telling them I need that order filled asap, and to send the prescription to my pharmacy. They cheerfully take the message, and then... you guessed it, nothing happened. This was 4 friggin weeks ago. I'm done dealing with trying to get the prescription filled, I got it done from another source. I cannot believe that the incorrect billing, lack of refilling my order, and other service issues can possible be occurring WITHOUT Dr. Powell being aware of this. Impossible in a small doctor's clinic. I have numerous family members that are physicians with their own practice, and they call the shots, all of them. From a professional point of view, I have zero respect for this doctor. Avoid at all costs. read more

I went to Dr. Powell's office to get a full-body screening and have them look at a laser burn from a laser hair removal place. The wait was not long and Jennifer took such great care of me! She was gentle, kind and very informative. Jennifer made me feel very comfortable, even when she had to remove a spot on back for testing. She made sure I knew exactly what she was doing and what kind of things she was looking for throughout the entire appointment, as well as treated my severe burn immediately and even gave me some sample burn creams to take home. Practice is ran unprofessional... earliest appointment they had was a month out, okay, no problem. I drive all the way from the other side of town for the appointment only to have to cancel after waiting 45 minutes in the lobby and being lied to about how many patients were in front of me. I'm tired of doctor offices that think that their time is more valuable then everyone else. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. powell's for over 6 years. My toddler son recently started getting odd skin rashes that would come and go but get worse with each occurrence. I took him to Dr. Powell and he immediately diagnosed it and treated it and it hasn't been back. I am happy to say he is just as good with children as he is adults and I was glad to have someone I trusted for my son to see. read more

I just had the best experience at Dr. Powell's office. Not only was his staff so nice, but I actually got to see the doctor after waiting in the exam room for less than 5 minutes! They diagnosed my skin rash, gave me a bunch of samples and a rebate card to help with the cost at the pharmacy. I will be recommending him to all my friends even though its not totally convenient to Katy...well worth the drive! read more

11/17 Office staff friendly and nice, but my coordination of care was less than desirable due to: The NP, Jill McGraw works only part time- my care was delayed around her schedule. The staff lost my lab work every time I provided a copy. The staff provided the wrong insurance card to the outside pathology lab. I received the bill 6 months later. The lab said, "Dr. Powell's office provided the wrong information. The insurance claim was denied- reason given "patient does not have active insurance!" (of course I have had healthcare insurance for the last 30+ years) The NP was very delinquent with providing my Primary MD with a dermatology medical summary report when I requested. A patient's care should not be delayed based on inadequate staffing and new staff. My Primary Care provider had to provide additional follow up due to the NP Jill McGraw lack of coordination of care. I had to make additional appointments to see my PCP to provide specific care needs. read more

I called to make an appointment for a first time patient, after asking about insurances accepted and the reason why I wanted to be seen, I was told there were no openings until December, it is October as I'm typing this. Really December!! common, I really don't want to wait until December to see a doctor. The receptionist could have told me that when I told her I was a new patient, obviously I needed an appointment asap. she could of saved me a lot of time on explaining my condition and verifying insurances. read more

I just went to Dr. Powell for the first time last week. I had a very good experience. I only had to wait ten minutes to be seen. I have been to doctors where I waited over an hour. The staff was friendly and helpful and always had a smile on their face. Dr. Powell was friendly, efficient and professional. Unlike other doctors I have been to, he would also just chat with you. This is one of those repeat mistakes. I had not seen this doctor in a couple years and had forgotten the previous one time experience. When I scheduled the appointment and the scheduler had off color remarks again as to how the doctor could examine me; my recall began, but I could not remember clearly whether I had been there before. That was just obviously off-putting coming from someone that has never known me at all plus it being over the phone. From someone I actually knew at some point or an in person direct flirt from the source and good rapport, it would have been funny instead of setup creepy. Instead of putting her in her place I told her I knew every inch of my body already and needed him to check the problem. I made the appointment then later got lost looking for the office which is in the back of an attached building with no signage and none of the businesses I check next door knew the doctor or location. I called on the road for assistance but no one answered before 2 pm (my appt. time) due to breaks. More recall came to me and then I walked in and saw all the same everything including staff and was sure. I was already there so I stayed. I remembered my first time there to have the spot on my back that wouldn't heal biopsied. He was immediately full of bad attitude and snappy. I had never met the guy before. Then he biopsied the area and couldn't manage to Lidocaine the small spot sufficiently and just cut right in without warning. His P.A. was standing right there watching the wince on my face. Then he immediately takes the specimen and heads right out the door saying in the worst tone, "I can expect to see you again?" I was enraged at that point and gob smacked and didn't have time to reply before he was out the door. This time however he was different and had a much easier manner and was even prying into my personal business again. I was relieved until he repeated his reckless biopsy AGAIN while I was laying face down on a table bowed up to support someone on their back. There was his P.A. watching me wince again. Because I had not been prepped with malice this time, I kept my cool inside and had to think about the situation and the factoid of no other close doctors on my plan. So I paid my co-pay; after telling him, "You bet." when he asked if I'd be back as he rushed out again. I left with a conundrum, making sure to be nice to all his paycheck myopic minions. His P.A. called after the New Year and was trying to rush me into a procedure with no personal discussion with the doctor. I told her the problem as last time and that I wanted my previous records.The first biopsy took most of it with it and a while to heal but the spot returned and grew some over time. They claimed it was my first visit and that they had no record of it! This was not the thing anyone would be willing to forget twice. Well, I have the same insurance now; I have retrievable info and a record of the credit card payment for both visits. He would rather direct his assistant with phone on speaker than speak himself. So I initially said I'd speak to him not her about it at my next appointment. I spoke to his P.A. who was overdo it happy, ass-covering and evasive; Wendy (I think her name was) who bounced from courteous to smart-ass and making it personal for her; Jill who injected herself maybe thinking her manner could sway me after this kind of experience and the receptionist who is clueless if not intentionally even after closely repeated conversations. They tried to charge me $25 for my medical records LOL. I knew I was entitled to the only thing needed and I required a free copy of my biopsy report. I went to get it after cancelling my appointment. I told the receptionist what I had already explained; that I needed it to give to a better doctor. Then she says, "Do you want to cancel your appointment then?" I said, "YES". She said, "Let me check if it has been." I said, "Okay then." I left. Stay clear of this clan. I have a larger sun-caused basal cell carcinoma on my back that needs to be removed by a much better doctor that I can trust for care and integrity. And also with a staff that can find records and supply current info that is already paid for without cornering them first. I almost never use Yelp but this is important and they have one of the first listings on the web. read more

Very disappointing experience and they are poorly managed. I was skeptical and worried about them cancelling our appointment after reading all of the other reviews but that did not happen. I found them in my network so I called them to make sure that they actually accepted my insurance plan. They were very nice and after a brief hold they confirmed that they did. After taking off work, and getting my daughter out of school early, I arrived and was informed that they did not take my insurance plan! I did my due diligence in confirming with them that they accepted it, going to our primary care Dr to get this referral and then I am turned away. I asked to speak with the office manager about this to see if they could help me but was told that Chelsea, the office manager, was to busy to talk to me. WOW! I just wanted to see if they could work with me since they made the mistake, not me. This cost me over a few hundred already in missing work and will have to repeat the process with another Dr. What ever happened to customer service especially when the business is at fault? read more

Where do I start? I believe Dr.Powell is a great Doctor but his staff is horrible starting off with the office manager, she is a loud person and is not aware on how loud she is to patients out in the waiting room. As I am waiting to be called back she is talking about a patient and how frustrated she seemed to be by the patient. I also thought she was very rude by the way she spoke to another person by having to reschedule the appointment in a waiting room full of people where I'm sure everyone could hear her tone of voice. Well I get called back by nurse Jill. Wow! From the beginning she goes in the room with me and she is not the nicest person to deal with. She seemed very inpatient and easily irritated. I don't know what I was doing wrong by telling her what medications I was taking or what my visit was for, but made me feel very uncomfortable. Dr. Powell came in quick fast and got to my issue. Out of everyone I can say he knows what he is doing and cares about his patients. Of course after waiting for a pretty long time before being called into a room. I can say this, no matter how good this doctor may be , he does not know how his staff acts toward people and I will not be going back. Sucks that you find a good doctor but people he chooses to work for him have so much control over how the office is being ran. read more

I had to wait 1 hour 15min to see the doctor. Meanwhile I had to call my own insurance during my wait (with no reception) as I was told by the staff. I told her I couldn't and she said she couldn't call for me. Yes you guessed it, I had to pay 175.00 for a 10min consultation. The staff was rude and snotty. I was given a prescription coupon yet the pharmacy wouldn't take it and wanted to charge $950. I was worstening as my battle with the pharmacy went on for hours (they were trying to help). Needless to say I had to call the doctor at this point to authorize a generic brand or cheaper meds. Yes, understood it was late (almost 10pm). I was in pain due to my condition. As I explained myself to the doctor and what had happened in the doctors office; he went off on me and was being sarcastic (how dare me call him that late and talk bad about his staff). Needless to say he left me in tears and helpless. read more
