David is a really nice guy but not a great barber. The "studio" is basically a living room converted, it doesn't feel very clean, and there was no ventilation so felt stuffy and unhygienic. I have really short hair (like crew cut short), and was looking to clean my fade and trim the top. His tools are old and got hot really fast against my scalp. When he was done, i noticed he only cleaned my sideburns on one side and my bangs were slightly lopsided and the fade wasn't very clean. I didn't say anything because he seemed anxious to get to the next customer who was waiting for 15 min and I figured I could fix it easily myself. But after I got home, my partner saw the backside of head and noticed a big tuft of hair sticking out the top. He basically didn't finish the fade in the back so there was this abrupt transition from short to long hair. Also, I should have been charged men's cut which is $21 versus women's $26 because my hair is SHORT. But after he finished, he asks me "you're a women right...?" To which I said yes, so he charged me $26. This traditional and outdated gender imbalance in the hair cutting world is so disappointing. read more

He's an excellent barber. I was looking for an affordable place to get my hair cut. I was specifically looking for a place that knew how to cut Asian hair, so I found David and decided to give it a try. He is Vietnamese-Canadian and the barbershop is located in his studio apartment. I told him I wanted a short haircut so he suggested #2 on the sides. He said that since I have Asian hair, I should keep my top long so that my hair doesn't stick up. I was actually a bit horrified when he showed me the mirror and I saw my haircut. I thought I looked horrible. The thing was that he had wet my hair so what I was seeing was how I would look if my hair was wet. When I went back home my hair dried and I saw that this is the best haircut I've had in a while. It's low maintenance and cut very evenly. I just went for a second time and I've had a similar excellent haircut that I'm happy with. For $16 that's a steal in this area. read more

Solid price. He cuts hair with a consistent quality. Sure he follows a script when he cuts hair, but I keep changing my facial hair so i can't complain if he doesn't remembers me and says the same stuff. Everyone needs a David. When my hairs getting too long and I'm feeling shabby, I call David. In less than two hours David finds an opening to clean me up, but not just that. David is my hype man. David tells me how handsome I am, he warns me about future jealous men trying to fight me, jealous girls and girlfriends, David even gives me my astrology sometimes. I usually cut my own hair at home, but go to David every couple of months for a reset and he does a fantastic job for a great price. A great conversationalist, he cuts out of his house in Oakland and tells you about his many years of cutting hair - even previously being the barber of the Raiders. The only downside is that sometimes he will randomly be closed or not at home. Because of this, I recommend calling ahead to see if he will be available. I was excited to get my haircut here after reading all the raving reviews. However, after the end result, I was not super impressed with the cut. This is only my third time going to a barbershop, and I've been trying other places, but I will not be coming back here. He also clipped my ears on numerous occasions, I thought I would start bleeding or something. I've never had my ears clipped before. I asked for a fade on the sides, which I did not receive. Now I don't know what to do with my hair because there's an awkward thick part in the back where I usually part it. -_- He kept saying I can do a "Parisian" part which I said no. and now I need to go pay more money to get it fixed. ***Update on the price: Men's first time is now $12, not $7. Women's is $15 now. He's worked for Supercuts and Great Clips and cuts all kinds of hair.. men, women and children for only $9. He runs a small shop out of his home, and he did a great job. He cut my hair just as I asked. As a first time customer, he charged me only $7. I doubled that for a job well done. I've been looking for a local barber for awhile and I think I've found one. It's not easy to make an appointment with David. It's based out of a house and as such, the hours aren't consistent. However, David is careful and he cuts hair well. It's a barbershop kind of hair cut which is what I like. If you want a salon type, maybe reconsider this place. It's a short walk from the MacArthur BART. read more

Called and made an appointment for 3:30pm. Drove all the way over to find a sticky note on the door stating simply "gone until 4:30pm. See you then". Because I've had three pretty decent haircuts here I gave him the benefit of the doubt that he had a legitimate emergency. I found some way to piddle away an hour of my precious day off, and when I returned at 4:30 David was just starting another customer's haircut. "Oh sorry about your appointment-can you come back later?" is all he said instead of "oh sorry, I had a crisis/dog died/broken pipe" etc. Here's a customer service tip for the home-based business: get a pen and calendar.
