3 background things: First I only write reviews for uber-hateful 1 star reviews or mind-blowingly good 5 stars. Secondly I have awful hair to manage, plagued me my whole life. Third I'm a guy & this review is for men looking for a hair person. I've never in my life had what I considered an amazing haircut, never had a regular stylist. Just an entire life of mediocre "professional" haircuts, & for 12 years I just shaved my head with clippers in the bathroom, convinced it was better than anything I could get for a reasonable price. And I'm not going to spend more than $30 at the absolute most. Well congrats David. I'm in my 30's - & you just gave me the best haircut of my life last week. I literally never thought I'd walk out of a hair place feeling like a million bucks. I've only ever walked out being like, "well at least it looks cleaner & neater." My girlfriend was giddy with joy at my haircut. Multiple longtime friends couldn't believe it, a few commented it was the best they'd ever seen my hair. David is a PRO. He turned the front room of his house into a little hair studio. I asked him about his career - the guy STUDIES haircut techniques. He left Vidal Sasson in the City because "he had nothing else to learn there." He used to cut hair for the Oakland Raiders. He's not a guy who does what he does just to scrape by, this is his true profession. The cut I got was worth possibly $100. But you know what he charged me? $12. Yes - $12. So I tipped him a ton. Who knows, maybe he can afford that price since it's his own place. It was possibly the best value I've ever gotten for anything, period. Thanks David, seriously. You gave me such a good haircut it was a lifetime first for me, and it caused me to take the time to write this Yelp review for you. Hope it helps. David is a very friendly, charming, and hilarious barber, who gave me an excellent haircut. On the recommendation of a friend, I decided to give him a try, and I couldn't be more pleased. I showed David a picture of the style I wanted, and he gave me exactly that, plus some lovely conversation to boot. First off my boyfriend's hair looks bomb! He went to David's on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. Since it was his first visit his haircut was only $7. (Normally a haircut is $9, which is unheard of. Super cheap!) there's only one guy who owns and does all the haircuts and he's super funny and really nice. I don't like to write bad reviews, but it is a must in this case. He is a nice guy to chat with, but he cut my skin with his electric razor repeatedly. I didn't know how bad it looked until I left and saw at least seven different bloody cuts at the back of my head. I told him that he was cutting me, but it just seemed to be unavoidable after the third time or so. On top of that, he didn't follow my request to keep my hair long. After he lopped a bunch of hair off with a single swipe of the razor, I thought: "Well, that section is already gone. I guess I just have to keep going. I should have just walked away at that point. Ok, you would think its easy to get a good cut when going bald, but a bad cut shows up even more! David does an amazing job!!! Great price, super friendly. A great guy all around. I've been going to David's hair studio for almost a year now, and I don't think Ill be going anywhere else. He consistently gives a great haircut and He's also one of the cheapest. This place is quaint and very relaxing. I came here on a saturday afternoon and the wait was 10 mins at most. David takes his job very seriously and goes way out of his way to make sure you are completely happy with your haircut. Also it was quiet nice that he was also very engaging. This visit left me with a smile, great stories and a great haircut. I am traveling in the area and needed a fresh haircut to fix a bad haircut I received at home 2 weeks prior. I found David online and questioned the pictures I saw of the location. The reviews gave me confidence to give it a try anyway and I'm glad I did. David was a true professional. He has been cutting hair for well over 40 years and obviously is not doing this for the money. His prices reflect that statement. Like I said I was traveling and I do not carry cash when I travel. David without hesitation said no problem pay me anytime or don't pay me its ok. He was sincere. He was happy to meet a new person and a chance at a new challenge. I went to greatclips in Rockridge for a haircut about 2 months ago and hated how it turned out; they didn't listen to me at all and I left embarrassed. Anyways, I searched on Yelp for a cheap place nearby and found David's Hair Studio. I was a little skeptical of a $7 haircut, being soo cheap, but I decided to take a chance, given the great reviews. I'm very glad I did! First off, I have to say, the dude was charming. I'm normally not very talkative during haircuts, just letting the people do their work, but he was great, telling stories about the raiders and just being super friendly. But most importantly, I got a great haircut! I felt bad that he only charged $7 for the great job he did. read more

This is a great person, with a great little business. I went here today, and it is my new barber shop. David is very nice, and very interesting to talk to if you like learning about different people's experiences. It was also a great haircut (crew cut, so pretty easy, but he takes time to make sure you are happy). I give this 4 stars, not 5, as it is a cute little shop, in an ok neighborhood, not a Hollywood style fancy place like on TV for $75 crew cut. $12 for men's cut, 5 out of 5 rating for value. Really attentive and a very nice guy. Told me a pretty cool story about how he used to cut hair for Al Davis and some of the Raiders players. Old school customer service you rarely see anymore, he really made sure I was happy with everything as he was doing it and told me to let him know if I wanted more taken off, etc until I was completely satisfied. read more

During my first visit, he regaled me with his history cutting hair for many customers whose stylish hair is a job requirement. He can do many modern cuts as well as old standbys.
