I walked in looking for a screw, nut and a washer. B sent me by text of what he was looking for. First thing I walked in was showed the text to a HH staff. He then got someone to help me. The staff was very helpful. He found exactly what I needed. On top, he said if it doesn't fit, I am free to return it. Luckily everything worked out well. I was happy. The location was great and convenient. This is a neighborhood store. Most of the customers here are locals or living in the hood. read more

They do offer a wide variety of stuff you'd expect in a small hardware store. Their staff are friendly and helpful. Items they can't stock due to their size can be ordered online and shipped to the store. Yet I shop there as infrequently as possible. Why? Because they presume every customer is a potential shoplifter -- they require all bags to be checked at the entrance. Is this a huge inconvenience? No. But since merchants must now charge for shopping bags, I generally carry one with me, and no, I don't want to have to leave it behind while shopping. No other business in the area treats their clients with such derision. If I can buy elsewhere, I will. read more

I really resent being treated like a big-time criminal when I want to buy a lightbulb. You MUST lock up all of your bags and purses before you're allowed in the store. I had an empty nylon shopping bag, and I had to lock it in a locker before I was able to proceed. Everything in the store is behind gates or glass, anyway. Won't be back. Tell you what: spend the money on a couple of good loss-prevention officers and it won't feel so much like a gulag. read more

Shopped here a bunch of times over the years; you can get *almost* everything you want without having to take a bridge. truly horrible staff. Bought LED bulbs, got them home, installed on and it worked for a total of three hours. Returned the next day to return them to buy a different brand, they would not refund me my money, only exchange it for the same crap bulbs they sold me the day before. And a warning, Christopher took the new bulbs and put them into the original box and put the returned bulbs into the new box. Suspect they are going to resell them, as when they "tested" the bulbs, which was hilarious as the guy didn't even turn the strip of sockets on while doing the test, once he did tho, the bulb flickered and came on and went off. He said it was fine and blamed my fixture at home. Funny, last bulb I put in lasted 9 years. these guys are a joke, will go to home depot next time, least they have decent quality and a hell of a lot cheaper than this shithole. read more

I just tried to go into this Home Hardware to grab a few small hardware items for a project. It was approximately 6:50pm, and as I opened the front door, a woman stopped me and expressively tapped on her watch to indicate that they were closing. I responding by asking if they were closing early and she rudely let me know that they wanted to leave. A man behind the counter smiled and nodded in agreement. Firstly, you close at 7:00pm. Not 6:50pm. I actually needed a few items and it would have taken me no more than 5min to find them. The items in particular would have resulted in a good sale to close out the evening. Unfortunately, they didn't let me in. This was a surprising move on their end since there's been a lot of negative feedback about the lack of selection and organization, high prices, and ignorant staff experiences. Secondly, the customer service is an absolute joke. All of the things that other people are writing are true. This wasn't my first time in this Home Hardware, but it is most certainly the last. How can it be so difficult for others to just be polite? Do yourself a favour and lighten up a bit. Having a sour attitude will only negatively impact you in the long run of it all. All that being said, I'll be heading over to Home Depot shortly. And I'll continue to go back having never had a bad encounter. Anyone who's lives in the West End knows we've all been wishing for a 'serious' hardware store for literally decades, but unfortunately this isn't it. It's a passable, if terribly messy and confused place but they don't actually carry much more stock than either of the two smaller local hardware stores we've had all these years. What makes this place truly awful however are the staff. With a few exceptions they are all horrible people who seem to spend all their time acting as ersatz store detectives. Every single time I shop there I am followed around the store and spied on from behind piles of boxes and tools as if I were stuck in some Cheesy Pink Panther cartoon. Even though it's my neighbourhood and I'm in there semi-regularly they never seem to remember me. Every single time I'm treated like some suspicious shifty criminal when all I want to do is shop. Seriously, they are the most poorly trained, offensive staff I've come across in a long time. No doubt ruled over by some similarly humanity impaired manager. You'd think they might spend their time cleaning up all the junk in the aisles instead of hassling customers and pretending to be Sherlock Holmes. My advice is to stick to the original West End hardware stores and give this one a miss. read more

I'm a West End resident and I have to say that one of the best things that's happened to the West End in recent months (years?) is the addition of the Home Hardware store on Davie Street. Not only does this store seem to have everything you could possibly need, but the people who staff it are really wonderful. I pop in from time to time but over the past couple of days I was in repeatedly each day as I had a couple of home projects on the go. I ran into a few snags and received fantastic help from a number of staff members there. I needed help with screws, with choosing the right light bulb etc... I dealt with three or four of the gentlemen who work there and they were all super helpful. There's an older gentleman there who is just great! I don't know the name of the woman who was on cash but she's great as well (brunette, short'ish wavy hair). We are very fortunate to have a Home Hardware store on Davie. You guys are awesome! I stumbled upon this store shortly after moving here from the States. I needed a timer and an extension cord. I was surprised how tiny this store was but, man, it was jam-packed with merchandise. The selection of items may not be extensive, but for the most part, I'm sure one can find a few different models of whatever they're looking for. There weren't a lot of folks in the store when I visited, and there was a store manager talking to a younger cashier guy when I entered. I asked where I might find the items I needed and the manager said he'd bring me to them, to follow him. There were quite a few different types and colors of extension cords but only a few timers (and not the electronic types of timers I had hoped to find). Still, I purchased the items I came for, despite the fact that I felt the prices were on the high side. All in all, a decent hardware store to get basic stuff. read more

There were only a couple of customers in the store (it was a small store) but they had five to six staff on the floor, and a couple of them were standing in the aisle chatting. They put locks for the batteries that hung on the wall so we needed to ask the cashier to get the batteries for us. He looked annoyed when we asked him. It was odd that they put locks for the batteries but not for the more expensive items. When we tried to use the electronic gift card to pay, the cashier said he could not scan the code. It was clearly indicated on the gift card that the cashier could scan it. He told us we needed to print the code. We were surprised to hear that. We left without purchasing not only because the cashier was unfriendly, but also their electronic gift card caused us inconvenience. We gave the gift card away because we would not return. read more

Although the store staff has been very helpful assisting me with my purchases here and also being able to find everything I need, I have to only give this location 2 starts because of the rude service at the checkout on Saturdays. the man at the checkout was condescending and had a snotty tone of voice with me. He has been like this the last few times I have been and it has left a bad taste and I actually kind of dread going but it is convenient for me. I have been on other days of the week and it has been fine. I'm just not happy with how this particular cashier has been towards me. read more

Very poor customer service from a rep in her 50's ish with grey hair. I bought a large bag of soil the other day. The store had limited selections of soul available, and George helped me to find what I was looking for. He was great. When I arrived at the cash register, I placed the bag of soil. It was quite dirty as some soil were exposed through small holes throughout the bag. #1) I was asked to move the bag to another cash register. There were two staff standing talking irrelevant from their job. Only one of the cashier, the grey haired lady, was the only one that was working so I had to move the bag. #2) I asked for a bag to put my purchase. She said there were no bags for that size. And she started helping next customer at once. There was no signes of even trying to find something. I was left out because I didn't want my clothes to get dirty. A manger saw this, so he kinda helped the situation, but I wonder if the manager has had performance conversation or training in the moment after I left. My husband had a very similar rude customer experience from the same lady after that... Because the service is very poor, we stopped supporting this store, and we go somewhere else. It is too bad the store doesn't know how to keep local customers happy in the heart of Village. read more

The staff were nothing but helpful. The store was tidy and had a good relaxed feeling. I had no idea how huge the store was until I walked in. While there there were a few customers all being attended to so I waited my turn, and was presented with an idea that may have solved my home issue. I recommend seeing this store and make you mind up for yourself, had I read the other reviews first I may have skipped this store, but I'm very glad I didn't. read more

Generally a good store, we shop there almost weekly. Today, however, a rude staff member ruined the experience. My boyfriend and I purchased some gardening items. After making the purchase from a male cashier, my boyfriend grabbed some of the terracotta pieces in the help-yourself bucket. Literally only had a couple of handfuls when an older female cashier came out from behind her till to lecture my boyfriend on leaving enough for others. Seriously?? This isn't flour or toilet paper that needs to be rationed out during a pandemic. It's broken terra cotta that they've left out for people to take and use. And we certainly didn't take an excessive amount. That woman needs something better to do than monitor the terra cotta bucket. read more

Aside from literally finding everything I was looking for cheaper elsewhere, other retailers have much better and more reasonable return policies. Most recent example (and final straw): was going to buy a garden hose, but wasnt sure if the fitting matched. Asked if I coild return it (for exchange or refund) and they said once it was open they "couldnt" resell it (which is wrong). Sadly, this was not the first time I encountered such an attitude/policy at this location = never going back :-( read more

Yesterday I went to this new store in the West End with specific needs, in preparation for a household move. The first was to find a package of square-shaped felt pads to stick on my furniture legs to protect the new-to-them hardwood floors. A young sales assistant came up to me in front of the display and asked if he could help. I told him the shape and dimensions I wanted and pointed out on the rack a package of square pads in a smaller size. I asked him specifically if he could check whether the larger size was available. He spent some time at the computer but returned to say that only round ones could be ordered. I pointed out a package of those right in front of us on the rack, which I'd already noted. I asked him what he thought of using round instead of squares on square legs but he was clearly out of his depth. This fellow didn't know his stock and evidently could not bring to bear any practical experience or training. I continued on to the challenge of finding a piece of firm plastic, 31" X 31", that I could place on top of wooden slats in the basement locker in order to move boxes and wheeled items around easily. I suggested a clear plastic runner cut to length. This time, a different, equally young, sales assistant simply couldn't understand my request. He kept asking me to explain, eg. what did I mean by "slats"? Where? When I hunted in the aisles for a roll of plastic flooring and asked if the store had any, he fled to the back to check, talked to someone there and returned to say they had none in stock. As I was leaving the store empty-handed, I turned around and caught sight of a middle-aged man in back laughing and saying loudly, maybe she should use a tablecloth! This futile and unpleasant shopping experience stands in stark contrast with a typical visit to Home Depot, where older, seasoned sales staff know the store merchandise and its uses, and generally can provide knowledgeable advice, That's where I'm going now, even if means a longer trip. Overpriced items, uninformative staff and a very very rude manager. I purchased a tool and the morning after I found it at Canadian tire for less than half the price. I returned the tool unopened and untouched the morning after but they said that there are no returns on tools. There is no sign indicating this, the cashier didn't mention it when I bought it. It's only indicated on the receipt which is given after purchase and in very small writing on a sheet with many other writings on their counter. Don't buy here, period. read more

I've had several experiences at Home Hardware on Davie st of gender stereotyping micro-aggressions. When I phoned to speak to the manager and explain the negative impact of these encounters, first I was called a "Young Lady" by the man who answered the phone, then when I spoke to the general manager she proceeded to preach about how their store supports LGBTQ folks and then said "I was the problem". The woman proceed to go on to explain all the ways in which I was the problem and I hung up on her because I was not about to hear her abuse when bring-up an opportunity for their company to promote their own values of inclusion and equality. I'm sure this store does a lot to support GLBT values AND they can also take some constructive feedback on a term called micro-aggressions towards women! I grew up with a Home Hardware in my home town and was happy to support them but each of the dozen times I've been in the store I have had a negative interaction- this interactions with the GM (a woman) was even more disappointing than the original interactions in the store and I can see how it fosters the environment that I feel when I enter the store . Language matters- if this store would like to be inclusive, minor changes in language and behaviour can create that environment. I'm sure everyone who works there is a nice person and would appreciate learning how they can show how awesome of a person they are. I see this as an opportunity for growth both in personal development and as a business model! I hope this store can hear this feedback opposed to rejecting it because I would like to support this business. read more
