I've had many great Christmas trees over the years from the good folks at Magnet Hardware, but this year the noble fir they put aside for me was something else: picturebook perfection. Prices are crazy right now, Christmas trees no exception, but this specimen was true value for money, and Ed Wilkerson and his staff couldn't be friendlier, more helpful, or more expert. This is usually my favourite hardware store in Vancouver...until today. I had a Kontessa Stove top espresso maker that I bought here that was defective and exploded on my stove. Luckily I was not hurt when it happened. There was coffee everywhere in my kitchen and the pot went off like a bomb. I brought it back to the store to simply SHOW THEM what had occurred, and potentially signal a danger to other customers (I also filed a consumer report about the pot earlier). The guy behind the counter said "there's nothing we can do...what do you want us to do?" I replied I just wanted to let them know. He said that the coffee pot exploding was MY FAULT because he could see that it was burnt and that I had heated it without water. I responded that it wasn't burnt until the pressure valve got stuck and it overheated and exploded with all the coffee in it. And there was water. I was honestly just trying to inform them of a safety issue. I didn't want (or ask) for my money back. I just don't want others to get hurt. I was treated like crap and blamed for the incident. I would have bought a replacement coffee pot here. Instead I left and will go elsewhere on Commercial to get one. Not cool, Magnet. I will reconsider ever coming back. I just did a bit of business with this hardware store and had great service. They were very friendly and responsive over the phone, and when they needed to check something they called me right back. There was an error in the order that I noticed when I got home, and talking to them again they went the extra mile to figure out the problem and find a solution that works for me. They really went the extra mile for my convenience and satisfaction, and were very friendly in person. Some businesses are using COVID as an excuse to let customer service slip. This business is doing amazing in spite of the problems. read more

So I'm wandering around Commercial Drive and where do I go to avoid the inevitable rain? Magnet Hardware. Actually my husband was drawn to this shop like the proverbial moth to a flame and I found him ecstatically gesturing towards a row of rice cookers. We hadn't bought our official "Vancouver Souvenir" yet, and we needed a rice cooker, a nice one. So why not? I was kinda hoping that it would be on sale. $39 was more than I had ever spent on a gadget to cook rice. Not only that, but the box had some weird Engrish on it and said it would keep my rice "punky and tasty." Last time I checked, I didn't associate rice with the Sex Pistols, but I suppose that is better than "mushy and cold." I asked the nice guy if the rice cookers were on sale (they weren't). However I think he could pick up on my I-want-this-to-be-on-sale vibe and he knocked off five bucks. Magnet Hardware reminded me of a small Ace Hardware, a little bit of this and that. Very accommodating and helpful. I'm making a custom lid using window frame materials for a giant pet terrarium and only had an idea based on a YouTube video of what I might do. I figured I'd call ahead to confirm what materials the store has, so I called in the morning on a weekday but only got a busy signal. I wouldn't be able to visit until the weekend as my work hours overlap their open hours, so I tried calling again the next day and spoke to one of their employees. He was very helpful, and coincidentally had also build a lid for a terrarium! He gave me great suggestions and tips, so when I went in on Saturday I knew exactly what to ask for. There's a line to get in the store, they can only fit 6 patrons at a time due to the pandemic restrictions for their business. The gentleman I spoke with on the phone happened to be working and set me up with all the supplies I needed, it was a busy day and I was very grateful for his time for sure. I dropped by the next day even to pick up some sand paper in case I needed to smooth the metal frame, the employee on door that Sunday knew exactly what would work and was very quick to help me find the right paper. I didn't work on my project until the weekday and found out the hard way that the bulk screen mesh that was cut for me was cut a couple inches too short - there was no way I could make this mesh work with the size of the lid. I sent an email this time instead of calling, and received a response a couple days later saying I can come in and exchange the incorrect mesh for the right amount. I dropped by today and sure enough, the employee on door was able to get me the amount of screen that I paid for, no fuss about it. Everyone I spoke to was friendly, patient, and knowledgeable. If they didn't know, they traded off with someone who would. Even with an easy mistake setting me back on my project timeline, the store made it just as easy to fix. I really appreciate this store for their service, in the past they've been very relaxed and supporting as well. I'll definitely continue to support this little Home Hardware so we can keep them in the neighbourhood. I'm rating full stars because as much as there was a mistake, there was no hesitation to help me out with it. You don't lose stars for being human, you gain stars for being humane. :) read more

Including all sorts of house hold items, kitchen, living etc, small to medium size building project supplies. I've been coming (oopps) for years and the staff are super friendly and helpful. Call it Magnet Hardware... call it Home Hardware on Commercial Drive... call it whatever... this is the place that has it all! Knowledgeable staff, reasonable prices, virtually anything your ailing house might need, super friendly service, a well-stocked garden centre, the list goes on. I've been shopping here since moving to the area almost ten years ago, and have never been disappointed. The same faces serving you over the years says it all in this day and age. On one occasion, they didn't have a replacement for a bent bolt, so Tim disappeared into the back room and spent five minutes banging the original back into shape! No problem and no charge! Whenever we need something, my partner and I joke that "It will be down Aisle 7 at Magnet", and sure enough, they have it! This place rocks! read more

I cant believe there aren't many reviews for this place. Do you have any idea how long it's been there? like 20 years, maybe more. I guess i've been coming here for this or that over all that time ever since I moved out on my own @ age 17. They are always nice. This last time, I needed a wooden stake for my Halloween costume as a Joss Wheadon multiverse slayer. I found some long pieces of wood and awkwardly asked for help. The older gentlemen (maybe hes a manager or the owner?) not only sawed it for me quickly but when the guy at the counter asked him how much to charge me he was like "just charge her a dollar" REALLY!?! you just made my Halloween, I love you guys. Check them out, they are way better then some huge warehouse sized store and they always listen and care. read more

When one typically hears hardware store they think tools, gadgets and grease. However, whenever I think of the Home Hardware on the Drive I think of the best Christmas tree selection and service I have ever found. They have been selling Christmas trees here for years. They are very knowledgeable, helpful and the selection is amazing. They have all the fancy trees you would typically see in a Martha Stewart magazine, plus more (i.e. Fraser fir, noble fir, balsam, Nuremberg hybrid etc.). They offer everything from small 300 square foot studio apartment sized trees to gigantic ceiling scrapers. The important part is that in my experience they don't overcharge and sometimes if they are in a good mood they will even give you a deal so be nice. The best thing about them is when I need a tree I know exactly where to go. I don't have to drive around looking for a Christmas tree lot and deal with some stranger who likely closely resembles a carnie smelling of pine needles. You can also find other seasonal must haves. They also carry a wide selection of espresso makers and other household necessities. read more

If you are sick of hardware stores that hire salespeople who know nothing more detailed than maybe where things are, or what they read off the box and say things like "It should work, if it doesn't you have two weeks to return it" GO TO MAGNET HARDWARE This is a true story. I went to a well known hardware store and I asked the wandering 'Can I help you" person if they had faucet adaptors for Danby dishwashers- they sold that brand. "The only adaptors we have are over here" He took me to the cell phone adaptors. I repeated my question, and got the same answer. English was his first language I might add. At Magnet they'll know what you need if you say it backwards in Urdu, okay I haven't tried that. They don't lie, they make sure you're finding what you need, or will recommend something better, but not because it's more expensive, because it's better. The will remind you that for a particular project you'll also need this, and mention a problem you might come across and how to avoid it. They pack a lot of handy household things in there as well and have a great gardening section. But it's not the same junky household crap you see everywhere from the dollar store to London Drugs (marked up 50%) The staff is courteous and efficient. If you have a job you are desperate to finish, but get home too exhausted from trying to find what you need- just go there. That's the answer. No more getting home and going "Damn, this isn't the right thing, or I need this too" I swear. read more

For somewhere that's a chain, this place sure feels like home! Dang, these guys know their stuff. Whether I'm looking for potato plants, paint, nails, or lightbulbs they always have a helpful suggestion to get me what I need! They really put the effort into training their staff well, so they can always point you in the right direction, and let you know the name of that "thing that you need to screw into the other bit to make the thing work!" By this point I've been in enough times that the staff know me, and they always make the effort to say hi and strike up a conversation - they don't need to do that, it's not like there are a lot of other options on the Drive for hardware stores, but it makes such a difference! Their cheerfulness, and the fascinating maze of the store mean that I always have fun poking around, and inevitably come out with 2 things I needed, and 3 things I didn't, but just HAD to get!! In the summer months they have a great selection of herbs and vegetables, very reasonably priced, and they have seeds all year around, if you're fancy like that! Almost anything you can think of they have here - give it a shot, you won't be disappointed! read more

This place isn't a big or have as much selection as the big orange box, but the service is alway friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. I can walk here from my house and be back in under 15 minutes - a great time-saver. Plus it's alway great to support local business and the smaller guys! I'm glad they are there! read more

I just bought two trays full of herbs for the centrepieces for my wedding reception here. The girl who was working in the nursery outside was so helpful, and brought us some plastic trays from the back. She made sure to point out the different varieties of rosemary they had, and even offered to help us carry our plants (and soil) back to the car for us! The herbs were supposed to be $2.99 each, but when we got to the till we were given a 20% discount for buying so many... but even still, the whole thing worked out to be insanely cheap; I was expecting the bill to come close to $100 but it was almost half of that. And the herbs were beautiful! We bought thyme and rosemary and they were full and bushy and not wilty or anything. We definitely scored. I've been to this Home Hardware before for little odds and ends, but the service we got today was definitely awesome enough that I couldn't not write a rave review. Was better before. Since the COVID crisis they act like border guards. They demand to know what you want before you allowed to enter, but aren't particularly interested in helping you find it once you're in. "No browsing.", "No mask, no entry". Someone likes rules. read more

These guys have always been helpful. Reasonably priced good Christmas trees, and when I needed five different items, Home Depot only had two at super high prices. Magnet had everything I needed and it cost me less. They're not open super late but the guys there are friendly and know where everything is. read more

Been meaning to jot this review down for awhile, so here I go. I have lived on the drive for a number of years. (Every. Single. Time) I pop into Magnet hardware for this and that the staff are courteous, professional, and helpful. Above and beyond really. I mean what are the chances that every single time they are all of those things? You would think once they would be in a bad mood. surly, or overall hardware bastards. But no. So kudos to the staff. Note: Magnet Hardware is a Home Hardware branch, and you may know them by that name. Narrow aisles lined with high-stacked shelves helps this place achieve a ratio of products:floorspace approaching infinity. There's a lot of stuff in here, and I routinely find things that I couldn't find in the competing bigbox. And unlike the bigbox, I actually find what I was looking for, usually within a minute of walking in, and if I DO have to ask an employee, they actually know what I'm talking about and where it is, instantly. This is probably because the staff have been working there since the founding of the city. Why do they enjoy their jobs so much? I don't specifically know, but they take great satisfaction in being hardware store employees, and that increases my satisfaction in being a hardware store shopper. The owner is often roaming the store, giving advice and taking custom orders. Friendly knowing people, tonnes of stuff, reasonable prices. In-and-out with your whatever-it-was in minutes. This store is the best hardware/ garden store in the City. They know exactly what they have, are extremely knowledgable about all their products and if they don't have it know where you can get it. It is also great that everyone is handy there and can give you honest, good advice about projects. The only reason I go anywhere else is because of there hours. read more

Even though the store is small and crowded with too many things to count the people working there know where everything is and are helpful and genuine to boot. They're great because they take the time to actually talk with you and smile real smiles, not fake Walmart smiles. They joke around and remember you when you come in. It charms me that one of the oldest Hardware stores still stands tall. The prices are a little high in comparison to the box chain stores, however, you walk out with a sense that you contributed to some history in one way or another. Last time I was in, I wanted hooks for indoor hanging baskets, the ones there were costly, the guy helping me saved me 25 bucks by showing me to just buy two cheap pieces and put them together. Normally this is my go to store for just about everything, gardening, kitchenware, etc and I have always found the service excellent....UNTIL today, you now do have a surly, moody guy at the cash who needed to serve himself before he could be bothered ringing in my order and despite a line up, stating that is just how it rolls here. I don't usually get passionate about hardware stores, but I love Magnet Hardware. Despite being small enough to fit in a Commercial Drive storefront, they have just about everything. Four varieties of cutting boards? Three gauges of speaker wire? A hatchet. (?!?) The staff is helpful and knows where everything is, which is critical, since you could wander for half an hour without finding the nook with the shower curtains. Perhaps even more notably, they have consistently suggested the least expensive product that will get the job done. On the basis of a very incomplete comparison, their prices on housewares seem better than Wonderbucks down the street. They probably can't beat Home Depot, but for someone living on the drive without a car, the warehouse stores are ridiculously inconvenient, and Magnet gets the job done. read more

Bought a wrench and lithium grease. The wd40 brand grease is watery and sucks. The wrench is pretty strong to replace my soft IKEA wrench that loses its teeth. Has many hardware items. Friendly staffs. read more

Today I went into the Home Hardware in Tsawwassen. My son had told me that they were selling a particular type of grass seed/fertilizer that I'd been looking for. I found the seed and it was listed on the shelf price tag as $13.49. When I took it up to the cashier, she rang it through as I believe about $22.00. When I told her that the price on the shelf indicated it was $13.49, she came with me and checked the price tag. It was the sole price tag under the rows of the seed. She told me it was the wrong price tag and said she couldn't do anything about it. I asked to speak to the manager and was told he wasn't there. When I inquired about who was in charge she told me it was "one of the guys" at the back counter. I went to them to speak about it and was told that they would bring it to the attention of the manager and that was it. Normally I would accept this but this was the second time this has happened and, ironically the other time was also for grass see. Also, on this occasion I had made a special trip because of the price of the product only to find that it had been labelled in correctly, and, having no one available to make any concession upset me. I know where not to buy gardening products now. I would think that the store would have a policy in effect to deal with situations like this but apparently not. read more
