Was trying to return an item. They had to inspect it. They claimed it worked. Brought it home put new batteries and it does not work. Manager/owner was rude about whole matter. I really like to support local businesses but will not support this business. read more

NEW ADDRESS!! 2856 W Broadway, Vancouver, BC V6K 2G7 Bright, well laid out aisles, neatly stocked with various homewares and more than enough hardwares to do most home repairs and/or projects. But of course not for major renovations or decorating projects - for those you'd want to go to Home Depot, where I'd many times get bewildered and lost amongst all the variety and choice of items. Here, the staff is very friendly, helpful and indeed tries to understand what we laymen needs or wants to do, and show what all we need. I guess that since home hardwares are individually owned, that this is the big difference from the big box stores which caters to the trades and more professional carpenters, plumbers and electricians etc. Not particularly cheap but fair prices and welcoming for us amateur gardeners, home decorators and those forced to become their own handyman! By the way, this is their new location - I've gone to their west 4th location for years and was dismayed that I couldn't find it recently! This little hardware store has come through for me so many times, and continues to do so. Just when I think I'm going to have to trek out to some big chain store for something I need, I pop in here and find exactly what I'm looking for here, whether it's a toilet plunger or parchment paper. I love this place. The staff are courteous and helpful, and I hope they stay in business for a long time because they are needed in this neighbourhood! read more

I have a huge issue with 4 out of 5 staff members not wearing masks in this very narrow aisled store today. It is unsafe & disrespectful to the public. Will not return for that reason. read more

I will edit this review if they make changes. I went in here to do some shopping on Saturday afternoon, I have't been in since Covid, I was shocked to see that 0 employees were wearing masks, there were no directional arrows on the ground for customers to use and avoid each other, no lineup markings outside of the store either. This is a TINY location! I've loved this place for years as it's so useful to have in such a busy retail hub. We are in the middle of a pandemic and your owner can't even be bothered to ensure that staff and customers are safe? Again this is a TINY location, it's awkward on a non pandemic day! But currently it's absolutely terrifying to go in here. Yes there is Plexiglas at the front, no returns right now and what? one maybe two markings for lining up to pay? There were at least 8 customers in here if not 10--- TO MANY! Safely I'd say 3 MAYBE should be in here at a time. What a disappointment... I really hope that they make changes to keep everyone safe. A frightening lack of responsibility! Left me covered in acid! I went in about 2 hours ago to pick up some bathtub cleaner. The clerk at the back suggested a bottle of strong two-part mold and stain remover. When I picked up the bottle from the shelf it leaked all over my hand. I immediately pointed it out to the clerk and he just handed me a paper towel before wiping the broken bottle and putting it back on the shelf for sale. "All these products leak," he said without apparent concern. The paper towel did nothing. My hand was soaked in some acrid-smelling goo that was turning my skin white. But when I asked if I could use their bathroom to wash it off, I was told that I could not and I should try the Starbucks next door. No amount of negotiating would change the clerk's mind. So I went to the front counter and explained what happened to the checker. And though he too initially refused to let me wash the acidic mold remover off, after some prodding he instructed me to follow him. Just at that moment the same clerk from the back came running up and shouted that the checker wasn't allowed to take me into the bathroom. He said, and I'm not making this up, that it was "Verboten." As if standing there soaked in some unknown acid wasn't nerve-wracking enough, now we had connotations of German police officers added to the mix. At this point I abandoned my purchases and headed to the Starbucks, where an elderly gentleman was using their only bathroom so I had to stand around another 5 minutes and watch my skin dry out before getting the chance to scrub at it. I don't blame them though, they're not the ones who spilled acid on me. In fact I offered to buy a brownie from the Starbucks guys on my way out to be polite and they gave me a discount on it for my troubles. C'mon Home Hardware! I know you have a policy against letting members of the public use your bathroom, but this was a matter of safety after a potentially dangerous product of yours spilled on me. I just wanted to wash the unknown and possibly toxic cleaner off of my hands, not steal your toilet paper or something. Be responsible! read more

Super helpful staff and a decent selection of basic tools. The only heads up I would give is that it's not ideal for people in Wheelchairs or any sort of mobility device. That said, the awesome location and great staff though keep me going back read more

This is conveniently located and the staff on the floor was helpful in a kind of watch-you-from-all-angles way. The person at the cash charged me for FOUR items when I only bought three. So CHECK YOUR RECEIPT before you get too far out into the street. I went back and she didn't even say sorry. Not very competent. She said I could go and pick up another of the items if I wanted. No thanks. Be more careful when you do the ring-ups and I won't come all the way back in the rain to accost you for trying to cheat me. PS - they tack on an annoying eco fee even when I'm buying something that is absolutely not recycled. The bag she offered me covered the items I bought maybe 1/3rd of the way. Seriously, if you want to charge me an eco-fee, don't give me a penny-candy paper bag that will dissolve in the rain and not even fit the item I bought. Incompetent and un-environmental! read more

This hardware store is a glorious jumble of everything under the sun, but that is not why I came. Gandy's will also bring in from a third party basically whatever you need in the way of home improvement. I picked two glass bi-fold cupboard doors. They took quite awhile to arrive (6 weeks) but the moment they came, Peter (the manager) let me know and then delivered them himself PRONTO! Very capable. Very friendly. Very accommodating. I will most definitely be back. How I love small businesses that bend over backwards to satisfy their customers. I would never have received this outstanding service from a big box store. read more

This place is great. Bless them. An oasis of sanity right in the middle of Kitsilano, which is not renowned for its good sense, humility, fair prices, or non-douchebags. All of the DIY stuff I've ever needed has been in stock in this little store, even when my queries at Home Depot were answered with dead eyes and "Yeeeah, I don't think we sell that here." The staff at Gandy's are very helpful and polite, and have always been able to help me find what I'm looking for or suggest workable alternatives. Please stay open forever, Gandy's. You are good. Also, if you leave, some store dedicated to yogawear for babies will likely open in your place. read more

I'm not what you might called "handy" but recently I had dire need of Home Hardware on 4th. I relate the following to demonstrate the useful though not perfect, stock range and staff expertise: Some time ago, the hinge bust on our lovely oak toilet. I immediately leapt into action and a bare four weeks later found wandered over to HH and bought some duct tape and stuck it down so it wouldn't slide off the porcelain at the slightest movement of a quivering buttock (sorry for the image). I do most of my reading in there so comfort is a must. More time passed, as it often does, and I took a look at the unnecessarily sturdy bolts holding the remains of the broken hinge in place. Wouldn't you know it? They were neither Phillips nor slot heads but a uniquely square headed screw only found in Canada the name of which currently escapes me. Spot the immigrant. So off I limped, (having recently been ejected from my bike by a octogenarian in a pickup but that's another story), to the hardware store to buy a uniquely Canadian screwdriver to deal with it. I bought two sizes out of nicely displayed wall of tools just to play it safe and limped (more painfully this time) home again. Both turned out to be the wrong size. Not surprising that it was both as, despite being apparently radically different sizes, closer inspection revealed they had the same head size. (HH loose points here for not mentioning that). I hobbled back to the shop to find out I was dealing with a screw head size hitherto unknown anywhere, inside or outside Canada (according to smiling, friendly but ultimately unhelpful staff this time around). An HH type dude gladly refunded the money with a mere flicker of "we're dealing with an idiot here" in his eye. They suggested a vice grip and assorted pliers and so once more I headed for home dragging my now nearly useless leg behind me. After a protracted, violent and ultimately fruitless struggle with the bolts, I lay on my back, shuffled under the toilet and discovered that years of misdirected urine had rusted the nuts to the bolts and fixed them in place as surely as if they'd been welded. Clearly WD40 was in order. Now crawling on my hands and knees I fought my way back to the hardware store and bought some of the cure-all wonder-lubricant. If there's one thing life has taught me, its that all problems can be cured with either duct tape, WD40 or prozac. In fact you can categorise any problem by figuring out which of these three will fix it. This was clearly going to take all of them before the end. I don't remember the trip back from the hardware store. I think I blacked out once or twice. I sprayed the bolts, the nuts, the seat and most of the room for good measure and left it to soak in for, oh I'd say two or three weeks. Then once more set upon the oxidised bolts with pincers, pliers, vice grips and ill-advised optimism. Of course they were now not only fixed as firmly as ever but very slippery as well and nothing will take the skin off your knuckles like sliding off the top of a toilet and slamming into a cistern. Repeatedly. Anyway, long story short, (too late?) I forked out for a Makita power drill, and, convinced I was about to shatter the entire fitting at any moment, successfully drilled out the whizz-rusted bolts. Here's where HH failed. No decent toilet seats. Off to IKEA. They did however have a treat for my dog that's always a plus. I'm telling you, if I was a Viking they'd be singing about this for generations. Not only that but it proves you can fight the cistern. (sorry). read more

Super helpful folks. I had a bike lock where the key was broken and stuck inside. Peter and Mike went super out of their way to help me with this and got my broken key bit out (it was a sturdy, expensive lock) and saved me 100$, and didn't take any money for it. Okay, I'll probably get ribbed for telling tales out of school but here goes... I have had Gandy's on my "chores list" for a couple of weeks and tonight was the night. It's such a handy spot and has a lot of stuff that you just can't find anywhere else close by. I'm generally grateful that this store exists and I drop in a few times a year. So tonight, my usual good mood was stopped dead in its tracks and left me with a big question mark - WTF?. Here's what happened: While the young clerks in the back were more than helpful, the girl at the checkout was ridiculously rude. As I paid my money, I merely smiled -- and in return I received a glare that was so full of hatred that I almost fell over. Immediately following this, as I was gathering up my things on the counter (and, no, I wasn't being slow or retarded), the clerk leaned in her chair and reached past me to the fellow waiting as if I was holding up a long queue. There was no queue and the fellow had only just arrived as I was about to leave! Sheesh! read more

Every time I have needed help, the guys in this store have been patient, helpful and attentive. It's so nice to have small town, friendly service in the big city. I can't comment on the prices as I usually just pay whatever an item costs -- as my only other option is to drive to Home Depot and it's not close by so the I'm okay paying for the convenience of being able to stay in my neighborhood. The isles are jammed with lots of stuff and it can be a bit of maze to look for your item but I think this is part of the store's charm! It's kind of fun checking out all the stuff because the store often brings in seasonal items that are good spontaneous buys like folding lawn chairs and fry pans. read more

I've always had a fascination with hardware stores because of the random and oft surprising things they carry. Not remotely handy in any sense of the word, one would think hardware stores would alarm me. Wrong! At least, not this one. The staff is young, helpful, sympathetic to my utter non knowledge of appropriate wattage and washers etc plus they have kicky fun home things that you don't know you were missing until you happen upon them. For example: went to get a key cut, left with retro style multi-coloured tiki lights for my patio. Once I needed some light bulbs and I left with a cheeky floor mat. Whether you need advice, simply need to purchase hardware or suddenly decide you can rewire your living room, I strongly recommend this is your first stop. It is small but packed with wondrously helpful (and fun) things. read more

Say you've got some errands to do: find a new party dress, buy a hostess gift, book an airline ticket, and find some wood glue. Kitsilano Fourth Avenue is a magical place where such things are possible. I recently needed said wood glue to repair some poor-decision Craigslist kitchen chairs. It had been on my list for weeks and when I saw this location I nipped in quickly and found what I needed. No hassle and at a reasonable price. Like Nadine I've found good presents here too. Hardware stores generally sell useful things, so it's a great stop for anyone hard-to-shop-for. Service is nothing special. I've been greeted and offered help here to varying levels on different visits. But hey, if the staff is busy helping other customers I'm fine with wandering the aisles (in this not especially large store) on a little DIY reconnaissance. read more

It said on the official Home Hardware site that they were open Victoria day and when I got here it turned out they were closed but no one bothered to make sure the info online is correct. I come back the next day after five when it says online that they are open and once again they have a sign posted saying there are new hours and they're actually closed. I know you're an independently owned small business but get your act together. Off to Home Depot I guess, which I know will be open as per posted hours. read more

I was walking in the area and decided to pop into this store for a quick browse around. For a fairly small store, it was packed with a large variety of items which were easy to shop through (despite narrow isles to accomodate the various rows of merchandise). I was greeted by a representative who was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. In the end I actually ended up purchasing an item based on her recommendation. It's really great to see the store provide such great floor assistance as hardware is definitely a department which spurs many questions as consumers browse through the aisles. The surround neighborhood is very fortunate to have a store supported by such great knowledgeable service in their area. read more

Great guys that work here! I went in today because my Dyson vacuum head stopped spinning and after trying every suggestion YouTube had to offer I found one video that said I needed a T8 screwdriver (yea I looked it up too). So I went into Gandy's with the vacuum head and James offered to try and get the tiny screw out with the T8 for free; we spent 20 minutes trying to pull the thing apart but the screwdriver they had was too long for the space. He told me if I bought it he would saw the handle of the T8 in half so we could get the tiny screw out of the head. Super worth the $8 and it worked!! The manager (or perhaps owner?) of this store is a complete you-know-what. I shop here a LOT because it's close by but every single time I go into this store he has his eyes on me. I have been charged for extra items and when I've spoken to him about it he refuses to refund them "because how does he know I'm not lying". I have tried returning items that have broken with the first use and because it broke in my home and not in the store, he refuses to refund or exchange. Most of the other staff are nice but totally incompetent. I've been shopping here for years simply because it's convenient but after numerous issues I won't be going back. Take the extra few minutes and go to Home Depot or Canadian Tire instead of going to this place. read more

this store has been in my hood forever and I am a home owner and construction dude.. this store has lots of useful things at reasonable prices. They price matched big box store prices when I brought the ad and it doesn't hurt that the cashier is really nice, helpful and easy on the eyes. We have to support these kinds of stores because I remember once they were closed down for a month of so and everyone was complaining about how they have to go farther to get this and that.. they got lots of glues, housewares, lights, hooks, heaters, etc, if its caulk you want, they even have caulk, PL, silicon, latex, wood colour silicon.. its crazy yall read more

This store is small compared to my regular one near Edmonds area, however, came here, once again, since I was on the way to a UYE and wanted to browse mainly for nostalgic more than anything as I had memories of my dad and I walking through Home Hardwares on Sunday's for renos and house work. I was my daddy's little construction helper. I miss those days and it is old school branches like that take me back. It is tight but organized. read more

Recently moved into the neighbourhood and I feel lucky to have this place for all my hardware needs, as well as paint, and pretty well anything I need for around the home. Apparently, if it's not on the shelf, they'll bring it in for you. Very helpful and friendly staff; they're available when you need them, but not in your face when you don't, which is the way it should be. You might save a few cents at a big box, but then there's all the time and energy that takes, and you;re just a number. read more

Sadly, that old hardware charm has disappeared. I went in today at 5:50 and was directed to someone who could help me. She initiated the conversation by letting me know that the store would close in 5 minutes. I needed advice about which part would need replacing on an item, and she indicated that she would be unable to help me. Under previous management, I would have received a great deal more support. Home Hardware does carry your basic home repair type items, like paint brushes and tools. But what's more fun is some of the other things they carry like, Le Cuistot cast iron cookware like the one I bought my wife for her birthday last year. Yes, I shop for gifts at Home Hardware. Service can be a little gruff at this Home Hardware location, but it's a good reminder that you are actually in a hardware store. read more

I lived in Kits for several months and depended upon Gandy's for everything hardware-related. Always had what I needed. Always had a nice selection. Always had it at a reasonable price. Don't know how they did it because this isn't a huge store, but I guess they use their space very wisely. The cashier wasn't always warm and cordial, but the guys in the back were always helpful and friendly. I miss you guys. Long live the great, small, neighborhood hardware store! read more

Terrible demonstration of custiomer service, business integrity and credibility!I visited the Gandy's Home Hardware store, hoping to purchase cardboard box's (if available), for moving purposes. Thereafter; I asked a couple of the store representative's if I could possibly purchase some of their cardboard box's from them (for I was just informed that they had just received a "shipment from the truck"). I thereupon; was told that I was free to have whatever was in the back of the store (by the large industrial-sized, garbage cans). Although, I only found one cardboard box, I found (ontop the the garbage container lid), a couple of packaged, fancy pattern, material, floor mats (with the price tag still on them for $29.99 each). The only defect that was apparant was a yellow stain, onto of the plastic, inwhich it was packaged with. I therein; went back inside of the store and asked the representative's if there was anything wrony with the carpets. The store representative's responded by stating that, their cat (I assume maybe store cat), peed on the carpet's, so they were throwing them away, and that I was free to have them if I wanted. I accepted, though; knowing that I still needed more boxes for moving and was, in addition; dealing with a tight time-restraint), I asked if I could leave the box (the two carpet's inside) at the store, until I return. Additionally, I offered to pay them for the cardboard box they offered to me for free, and also, offered them $5, for keeping the box at the store for 30-45 minutes, until I return, though; the staff insisted that, that was not nessessary. 30-45 minutes later when I returned to pick-up the box, there was a gentleman standing alongside the box. To be poliete, and so I didn't look like I was shoplifting, I informed the gentleman that I was there to pick-up my box, and that it was already approved by the staff, I talked to previously (who were still there), and that he could ask them if there was any problem. Insidentally; the gentleman (David Boyer-Store Owner/Manager, at least that's what he told me), began to remove the two mats from the box. It was then when I told him that I found them outside on the "dumpsters", and that they were thrown away by the staff, who therein; told me that I could have them because "the cat peed on them". The gentleman, then proceeded to tell me that, that was a mistake made on his staff's behalf and that he did not want to give the mat's to me (even though they were left for trash). He went on to say that he could still return them to the manufacturer and get his $40 back, and that it was his store, so he has the final say, and also that they were still on his property. I retorted that, the staff gave me permission to go outside to the back of "his" property (by the "dumpsters") and also gave me permission to take the mat's (that were left for trash, outside by the alley, to the public). I even said that I could have just grabbed the box, and left (since they previously authorized me to do so), but; instead I was being curtious by informing him,and I went on to inquire as to, what he would do if someone else walking through the alley, just happened to pick up the two mat's and walk (since they were left ontop of public city "dumpsters", in a public open city alley). Finally, I ended by stating that as a business owner, he should accept fault for his employees decisions, and therefore, credit and comply with what was told to me initially. He was rude, repeating was he had told me previously, making me feel very mistreated as a customer (for I have spent hundred's of dollars there in the past), ruining my day and making me very upset. I have the money to pay for these mats, but; it's not about the money, it's beyond that, for now it's about the moral and integrity of the issue. read more
