He is very old school not a bright shiny show room but the price is right and he knows bicycles inside and out from 45 years in the business helping keep davis on two wheels. i'd say just keep in mind when you visit he can seem a bit brash but that's totally fine with me as long as his work is quality and at a good price that makes it my go to bike shop. looks like a great selection of used bicycles. I've never purchased one from him only bike parts and maintenance. I would not recommend buying a bike here. The owner seems friendly and straight forward when you're first buying the bike. I just got a basic bike, nothing fancy. Even though he assured me it was possible to return it if it wasn't working, that didn't turn out to be the case. The handlebar kept coming undone. I tried to first return or exchange it, but he told me that I shouldn't have expected much from that quality bike, and tightened it and returned it to me. It later came undone again. After dealing with it coming undone since the start (and trying to fix it on my own a few times with my own bike tools to no avail), I tried to return it again, because it wasn't serving my purposes at all. He said he would replace the handlebars but that he wouldn't refund it. I was so frustrated by that point, and done with the situation of a non functional bike, that I just gave up. He told me that I was welcome to put it with the donations. I just did that. I really hope he fixes the handlebars before selling it to someone else. read more

I asked what the price would be to tune up my bike, and mentioned I was not sure I'd do it right away, and he said, "Stop wasting my time," and went back into his shop without another word. And actually when I first entered his shop, I couldn't find him, because he was looking at his phone, and even after I said, "Hello," he ignored me for a while, and then grudgingly looked up. Luckily right around the corner is the Davis Bike Collective, and of course Davis has a number of other places, including the new Cannery Bike Garage, which seems great. read more

I pass by this shop twice a day, so when my bike needed a repair I was happy to take it to the Davis bike exchange. The guy running the place was drinking beer and watching tv when I walked in, which is totally fine with me. I actually liked the relaxed atmosphere. Unfortunately, he is also extremely rude and unhelpful. He was so rude to me that I told him I would not be coming back to which he replied "who gives a s**t" Dumbfounded by this interaction, I asked a woman down the street if she had any experience with the bike exchange. She immediately responded with "total a**h***. I don't know how he stays in business" Go to Davis bike exchange if you like being treated like garbage or want to see an a**hole in his natural habitat. read more

This guy is horrible. Oh my goodness. He sits there and watches TV -- And then he's too busy to take some time and walk you around the shop? His sleeping Mad Max dog was literally more on top of his game than the owner. He constantly changes prices from person to person for what each service costs, and flip flops over what to do. After coming in to sell my bike to him--He says 30 bucks. I then come in with the back and says NO WAY I will pay you cash, in fact he didn't want to deal with the bike at all--Said he's got tons of them in the back. What kind of douche-baggery is this? Worst customer service experience I have ever had. His behavior was on par with a toddler throwing a tantrum. I'm telling you in terms of a bad experience, he would give Comcast a run for their money. Don't give this man your cash--In fact don't give him the time of day. Neither him or his slimy assistant will be of any help, and you'll leave surprisingly angry for the short amount of time you will spend in his hovel. Seriously just-- Just don't. read more

Owner sold us a bike. The tire was flat the first time we rode it. We brought it back for repair. The tire was flat by the time we got home. I brought it back a month so later, and told him what happened. He said " I haven't seen that bike in months, and that's what they all say" in an extremely dismissive tone. I told him I didn't appreciate being called a liar, and after he continued to insult me, I told him that I don't appreciate the broken bike. He then squared up on me, got aggressive and told me to leave. I do not believe it is safe to visit this store, especially if you insinuate he is at fault in any way. If you do visit, do not go alone. Or even easier, don't buy a bike here. read more

I came here for the first time today because of a recommendation from my friend. My bike had a flat in the front tire, so I came to get the tube replaced. First impression going in: The place is definitely dirty, but I heard that the service was cheap, so I let it slide. I ask the guy there if the tire still looks good, and he said yeah. I give him the wheel, and he says that he can fix it for 7 bucks. He said the wait time would be about half an hour, so I go off and do some errands while I wait. I come back in 45 minutes , and it's still not done. He says it'll be another 15 minutes, and I saw that it was kind of busy. When everything was done, I drove home and found... a flat bike tire?! What? I go back there, and he said the slime didn't hold, so he goes and changes the tubing right away. I drive home....another flat bike tire?!? At this point, I'm kind of peeved, for obvious reasons. When I get back there, the place is empty. I voiced my displeasure at having to come back a third time, and the other dude working behind the desk blew up at me, saying that I could have my money back and tearing the tire and the tubing off the rim. End of story: the place is marginally cheaper than others for service, but you also get rude attitudes from the owners. Seems like they aren't very thorough in making sure everything is a-ok before you head out. They're unprofessional and unhelpful (I asked some general questions about bike maintenance, and the answers they gave me were not very helpful). Only come here if you are in a pinch and don't have any money. read more

Other reviewers have come down pretty hard on DBE, but I had an okay experience. It wasn't kensho or anything, but it was alright; plus, it didn't hurt that I was greeted at the door by the owners brand new (adorable) puppy. The shop itself is cluttered, dirty, and smells of grease - and the two dudes running the show are pretty dirty themselves (at least when I went). However, both guys were super friendly and helpful and went out of their way to get me the parts I wanted. Plus, a few of the bikes they were selling were real gems for the price - if I'd had the cash I'd have happily walked out the door with one. I recommend DBE to someone on a tight bike-budget. You'll have to put up with some dirt and a certain degree of shadiness, but in the end, the value is there. read more

Guy running the place was down to business, extremely fair on the price, and even went through the trouble of tuning up a bike we wanted to purchase sooner than he had planned because we lived in Sac. He was nice enough to do that and invited us to pick it up on a Sunday when he usually is closed. The other reviews for this place sound bad, and if the stuff happened that is not ok. This is the only place I go for bike repairs. As a graduate student, I find that the price is right compared to the downtown repair shops. The owner is definitely a no-nonsense kind of person. I get the sense that he loves fixing bikes and doesn't exactly love customer service. But he seems to be a pretty nice guy-- not everyone needs to be a people person! He installed a new seat, a rear rack, fixed a flat and unbent a part on my bike all for around $50 including parts. When my bike was stolen and I needed to buy a new one, I called the shop. I'm less than 5 feet tall so I needed to know if he had any road bikes with really small frames. He told me about what he had, and told me that he was about to close soon so I should come back the next time they were open. Then, within a few minutes, he called me back! This was to tell me that he had forgotten about a beautiful bike that would be perfect for me and that was on sale. He suggested I rush in in the last 15 minutes to come try it. He just responded by saying that I forgot to mention that he upgraded the brakes. The original asking price was $150. He agreed to upgrade the brakes but would have to charge me $200. This was fair and we shook hands to affirm the deal. The reason I was picking the bike up mid week was so he could change the brakes out. This guy broke his word, flew off the handle and hung up on me when I reminded him of our deal. Not a nice man to do business with. read more

Been in here a few times and I'm pretty comfortable saying that each experience has been thoroughly unpleasant. The shop sells mostly secondhand bikes cobbled together out of parts, so if you're looking for something on the cheap this or craigslist may be your only bet. There, I said it, there's a reason to go to the Bike Exchange. Now, here's why not to: The guys who work there have been an amazing combination of scuzzy and arrogant. A friend of mine who just moved to Davis asked me to go with him to look at a bike there. It was a no-name french road bike with meh components, a very sloppy cabling job, and wasn't a great bargain, so I advised him to wait on it and see if anything else came up. I did not say a single bad thing about the bike or the build to the guy behind the counter, but he still felt the need to look up from the bike he was spray painting with all the components still on and call after us as we left that he's forgotten more than I, "Joe Biker," will ever know. Before that we'd been still considering the bike, but now we definitely won't be dealing with them. read more

We really don't understand why there are negative reviews on this business. Today we needed training wheels for a bike we borrowed from a neighbor. Within an hour, we had wheels and installation, all for $20. We think this place is prompt and fair. Two summers ago we needed a 24 inch wheel bike for our granddaughter who was visiting from the east coast for three weeks. At some of the local businesses, rental was astronomical at $75 per week. Davis bike exchange sold us a tuned gently used bike for $75 and offered to buy it back when we were through with it for $35. We had good service and good value at a cost of $40 for three weeks of use. Again this summer, we needed a bike for this granddaughter, and our experience with DBE was the same. The younger guy was rude. I got what I needed but the younger guy seemed annoyed by my presence. The older guy seemed nice that's why I went from 1 to 2 stars. The older guy looked briefly at my bike and said tire looks low. So after paying, I'm assuming I can use their tire pump. Younger guy takes a deep breath, pauses as if he wanted to say no. He then said yeah but you'll have to bring your bike in here. The freaking pump was standard and not attached. I have a 3 wheeler so getting it in the crowded cluster store was not much of an option. So I go outside to leave and younger guys goes outside by my bike for a different reason, but if he was worried I'd steal the pump he should have known he'd be outside anyway to watch. This place is cool if you like old dusty, rusty, rotten bikes. I find it a little hard to believe that all of his bikes are "donated". The owner is a grump and the guys he has working there are tweakers. If you need a random oddball part, this place mey be your only resource. But my roommate found his bike here that had been stolen from behind his work. They were like, "We bought it off a guy.", yeah right...SUPER SHADY!!! Once and a while a great bike does show up here, but most of the time it's just a load of cheap frames built with a mix of low end parts. Would give 0 stars if I could. This place sucks, and has sucked for YEARS. The guys who work here are rude as hell. I am convinced the piles of crap who own/run this place are drug addicts. They cannot seem to handle a conversation or treat anyone with any level of respect. I was just there, and a kid came in to get a cable on his road bike replaced. They were basically telling him to his face that his bike was a pile of crap. Newsflash: All the bikes in this store are piles of crap. The only exception is a couple rare bikes up front that he refuses to sell because he is insane and thinks they are worth a million bucks. The other reviewers who say these guys know bikes obviously don't know anything about bikes. Bicycles are not rockets, and you don't need to be a rocket scientist to work on bikes. Just because they know how to do stuff doesn't mean they are any good at it. Their parts cabinet up front is full of dirty, worthless parts. Don't let them try to overcharge you for anything. Their shop is filthy, all the bikes and all the parts in the shop are filthy. I'm no yuppie, I drove a dirty 84 vw vanagon here, but this is a place of business, not a dump, yet it looks like a dump. They actually had some very cool bikes for sale there, however (1) they are dirty as hell and (2) they are way overpriced. Save yourself some greif, buy elsewhere. I would recommend Green Bicycle Depot, Apex Cycles, or Bike Forth for you vintage/used bike repair needs. read more

Went to this place a week ago to do some preliminary bike shopping. The shop is messy, the bikes aren't very clean but they had an interesting variety of bicycles with a wide range of prices. The guys in the shop weren't friendly or welcoming, it felt like my presence was bothering them, but I figured I'd give them a shot. I found a bike that I liked, the price was a bit high but they offered to give me a deal on it. I told them I'd have to think about it and get back to them, they said that was fine but they couldn't guarantee the bike would still be there. I go back a few days later, the bike is still there and this time I have cash on hand and am ready to buy. I walk in, ask a few questions and offer to buy it for the price we had agreed to before. The older guy refuses and says he'll only sell it for the price as marked. I point out he had offered me a 20% discount before, and even offer to go a few dollars above it, but he makes up some story about having worked on the bike (he didn't, it was in the exact same condition as it was before). Bottom line, the place is dirty, service is bad, staff is rude, and they play games with their pricing. I should've checked Yelp before going in. There are other bike shops in Davis that are more deserving of, and willing to take, your money. read more

I had a good experience at this shop. I went in once to look around, and they patiently answered all of my questions and let me try some bikes. I went in another time because I found a beat up bike someone was throwing in the trash, and they quoted me $79 to overhaul it. They even offered to do a tune-up for less, but I went for the overhaul because the bike was so old and shot. Picked it up today and went for a long ride, runs great. Rich at Davis Bike Exchange is very helpful! He took great care of our two beach cruisers that needed tune-ups. He unloaded them from our vehicle and loaded them back up when they were complete. We have been using them for years and wanted to make sure people were aware they moved locations. I'm not sure of the address, but it's very close to the old location. read more

Frame was rusty and bike was kinda too small. I went there to check the bike and kindly let him know that we were not interested and he should not hold the bike for us. He was very rude. This is the only place in Davis that I go too. I've never had a problem with them. I haven't bought a bike there.I've gotten tune-ups, metal pieces fixed, and new tires. They have the best prices in town and they do the work within 24 hours (in my experience). First time I took my bike, someone had tried stealing it so the metal of the tire was extremely bent. I didn't think anyone could fix it. Instead of selling me a new one, they mad magic happened and fixed it and gave me a used tire tube (they asked me if I wanted a new one or used, I went with used). I only paid $18! Second time, my back tire was stolen, my chains were a mess, and I needed a tune up, plus new tape for handles. I only paid $65! The cost included, tape, new/ used tire, and tune-up. They only do what is needed and charge you appropriately. Third time, my roommate had a hole on her back tire and my BF needed a new tired for his bike. For both tires we only paid $27. Point is, they are affordable and they have never ripped me off. Yes, the place is not super clean, but I don't care as long as they price me appropriately. read more

However, the experience I just had was so awful I feel compelled to share about it and warn others to stay away: My friend's $2000 bike was stolen 2 days ago. We are currently a few hours away from Davis and unable to drive there now. My friend called first and the "owner" (as I can't believe an owner would be so rude) told him he did not have the time to write down the serial number and that they don't buy stolen bikes. How do you know the bike is stolen without the serial number? He then hung up on my friend before the conversation was finished. I called once more and asked him to please write down the information. He was extremely rude and hung up on me. We have called 15 bike shops in the surrounding area of Davis. Everyone I spoke to was extremely polite and helpful. The guy who owns the shop is awesome. I have been working on building my motorized bicycle for over two months now and he has been giving me giving me the best deals on parts (including entire bicycles) and services. No other bike shop in Davis can beat the prices at this shop and the amount he charges for repairs and modifications are extremely reasonable. Sometimes when my bike would break down in the middle of the road, he would help my fix it up so I could get back on the road again, and wouldn't even take my money if I handed it to him. To be honest, without all his help and helpful advice, I would have never been able to get this bike running. Just because the owner is a bit more serious, doesn't make him a bad person and I feel that it is for this reason he is severely misunderstood by some of the other people who wrote him poor reviews. The man is very nice, reasonable, and is extremely talented when in comes to working on bicycles. Do not use this bike shop. The owner is unstable. I paid for a $20 for a brake adjustment. Upon completion, the brakes were rubbing against the tire. I brought the bike back for adjustment. The owner became very angry and told me the bike was a piece of crap. He told me to leave the store and I could have my money back after he wiped his ass with it. Initially, he was friendly. After telling me it wasn't worth their time to look for the piece they told me they were closed and to leave despite all the signs saying open. Came here to find a used road bike that would fit my small body. The guy working was extremely rude and told me it would be almost impossible to find a bike for my size. I'm 5 foot 4 inches which is pretty standard for girls so I found that a little hard to believe. He had one used Schwinn from the 70s and wanted over 300 dollars for it. When I asked if he would consider lowering the price, he got mad at me, calling me and other college kids spoiled and then REFUSED to sell me the bike at the price he initially told me; I guess he didn't want a "spoiled" rich kid riding a bike he worked on. Anyway, I left very upset but happily found a used bike for half the price he wanted at the green bicycle depot. read more

This store's owner is bizarre, having a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde personality. He gave me good service in the past, but today refused to help me with a flat tire problem. Having replaced both tires several months ago, I was concerned that a flat had occurred yesterday without any use of my bike since his service work. I wanted him to see what caused the problem, but he took my request as an insult, becoming very rude and confrontational. I took my bike to another shop, was pleasantly treated, and paid a small amount of money for the repair to be done. Even though the Bike Exchange's owner is competent, I doubt that I will ever have him do any more servicing of my bikes. His changing demeanor is just too hard to cope with. read more
