I have to downgrade my previous review. A few years ago new owners took over and Dr. Tom retired. The new doctor was very pleasant, but my exam seemed a bit rushed. The real issue was my new lenses. I used the same frames, but the lenses were so "off" that I couldn't see, walk, or balance correctly. Everything was visually "off." Whatever went wrong, I could not physically function. If the various parts of the prescription are not properly aligned to your vision, then you cannot see properly. I suspect the new owners had switched to a different, and probably cheaper, optical lens manufacturer. I was upset, but did not trust them to make it right, and went back to my older pair of glasses until I found a new doctor and optometrist. Years before I'd gotten a badly made pair of lenses and the company didn't want to remake them, insisting my frames just needed adjusting, etc. It was a huge hassle then to get them remade properly, and I didn't want to go through that again. I'm much happier with my new eye care professionals and it's just a few blocks away from my house, so in the end, it works out better. read more

I was visiting Seattle from Atlanta, and lost my glasses jet-skiing on Lake Washington. I was nearly blind -- fortunately a friend guided me in on his jet-ski with few options. I had my optician in Atlanta send my prescription to Davis, and they had me set up with replacement glasses, honestly better than the glasses I lost. Went in with a pair of glasses I didn't buy from there, looking to get a screw replaced--they were special handmade glasses you can't find just anywhere and I couldn't find a screw that fit anywhere! The woman who helped me took the time to go through all their different screws to find a screw that would fit and fastened it for me, free of charge! She cleaned the glasses, too. I was very impressed with my initial experience at Davis. Until yesterday. I spent several hundred dollars for my frames about 14 months ago. I returned to have the hinge adjusted as it became loose. Top rating for excellent customer service! After needing an emergency pair of glasses, I was informed by another optician that offered one hour service that Davis optical were the only ones who could make progressive lenses in house. Sure enough, Davis Optical were able to do this. I was even able to find a pair of frames that I was happy with, and I'm pretty choosy. Unfortunately the lenses weren't right. The Optometrist who wrote my prescription made a mistake, and even though it was no fault of theirs they were able make the right correction with the help of their in house optometrist. They provided the corrected pair of lenses at no extra charge! read more

Overall service was good but Dr. Tom wasn't very helpful in answering/entertaining questions. I kept telling him that I could not read the last line from my left eye while testing and the images were blurry. I felt that the glass holder didn't sit on my eyes/nose bridge correctly. But he wasn't interested. He just kept asking me instead - "Just answer my question. Is it better or worse." Very less variety of frames. I've gotten frames for years from Davis Optical and had nothing but good experiences. I needed contact lenses, so I saw Dr. Tom. Dr. Tom while knowledgeable and prompt, didn't seem very personable or willing to give much time to listen to my thoughts on trial lenses I had tried. To each their own, Dr. Tom is good at what he does, but my experience with him felt rushed. The reason I give such a low rating, though is because of the women running the front desk. One of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had! When it came time for my followup appointment after using the trial lenses they had given me, they asked me to reschedule my appointment a total of THREE times! I needed those contacts for a sporting event, and what should have taken a week or two literally took a month. The final straw came when they gave me misinformation of what my insurance covered. On my initial visit, I was told that my insurance would cover the exam and all but $19 of a 6 month supply of lenses. On my final followup, after confirming the lenses were a good fit, I got to the front desk and am told that I owe $140 for the 6 month supply. I informed them that they had told me on my initial visit that that was covered by insurance. They insisted that was not the case and nonchalantly apologized for the confusion. I decided to not buy lenses and had them print me out a prescription. I later texted (they communicated with me via text by the way) saying that I would no longer do business with them due to the rescheduling and misinformation on my insurance coverage. The response I got? "Ok, sounds good!" No care, no accountability. I suppose if you want frames, the people working there will care about you as a customer, but don't expect that if you are working with Dr. Tom's front desk. read more

WORST OPTOMETRIST EXPERIENCE EVER!!! I went to this place because they: a) are near campus, b) take the grad student insurance, and c) are slightly cheaper than University Vision down the road. Big mistake. To cut to the end of the story, I ended up walking out of my appointment with no prescription and without paying. To be fair, the receptionist was incredibly nice and polite and everything else. They also have a great candy bowl. I was 25 minutes early and she explained that the Dr was at the bank and would be back at my appointment time. No problem: I ate some M&M's, went to the bookstore across the road, and came back 5 minutes before my appointment. I saw the Dr in the back and knew that there was nobody else there, but he still somehow came out to get me 15 minutes late. So, the badness starts here. He took me back to the exam room, sat down, and in a very grumpy voice asked why I was there. Without going into a lot of detail, his responses to my questions were so short and rude that I very nearly walked out after 2 minutes. Basically, it was very clear that he was in a bad mood and really didn't give a crap about my concerns about my prescription. He may have picked up on my displeasure with his attitude and he adopted a sing-song, I-couldn't-care-less tone of voice for the actual examination. I am not a 7 year old and it made me want to vomit. He was flying through the different lenses so fast that I really couldn't tell which was better than the other. I asked him to go back a couple of times and his annoyed exhale was clearly audible. At the end he was clearly getting tired of me and started actually giving me the answers to the different lenses. We actually did get to a pretty good final set (not perfect, but better than my old glasses) and he flopped back down onto his doctor's stool. Again, he resumed with the brush-off to my questions. He was such an ass that I couldn't help but tell him I wasn't appreciating his tone and would really like it if he could be a bit more informative and helpful. He closed his folder and said something to the effect of "I'm sorry you don't like your results and you can just leave if you're dissatisfied." So, I got up and left. He hurled a few very defensive comments my way as I was leaving. Seriously, I've never met such a complete and total jerk of a doctor. It's not like he even had any other patients there to rush off to, but he still slammed through the whole exam in about 4 minutes. If it hadn't been for my questions I would have probably been out of there in under 5 minutes total. My point: cough up the extra few dollars and go to some other optometrist. This guy completely and totally sucks. A total waste of time. OH YEAH, he also had stanky, stanky breath he kept blowing in my face. Sometimes Yelp feels really, really good. read more

HORRIBLE SERVICE - NASTY HUSTLING DOCTOR - AVOID!!! After reading Ed's review, I feel validated and quite confident in my view that yes, Optometrist Jerry Tom IS a huge jerk. I was the first patient in the door - very quiet morning. Tom seemed to have a pleasant enough manner but I quickly realized that he was attempting to hurry me. I asked a couple of questions - he ignored them or was downright rude. I told him I was confused by one of his 3-word responses - and he refused to explain. It took me a good five minutes to get him to tell me what he meant. He was argumentative and just nasty! I almost walked out of the appointment - not only because of his rudeness but I didn't feel like I could trust him. It felt like he was hustling me.And like with Ed, he also had bad breath in my appointment The desk help was nice, but from the moment I called to make an appt, they hounded me for my insurance info. I told them I was changing over to a new carrier and would have my new card at the appt, but they called me 3 times before this over a weekend, and requested it. read more

I had a perfectly nice experience at Davis Optical Express. They are centrally located and Dr. Tom's staff scheduled me quickly. Dr. Tom was courteous and explained everything to me since I was a first timer. I didn't feel rushed. Dr. Tom didn't engage me in long, drawn-out conversations and didn't have much small talk. But he was a very competent medical provider and his staff helped get my insurance processed, my order placed, and my paperwork completed quickly. I found the pricing at Davis Optical to be extremely competitive. At least half the price of eyeglasses at Market Optical. I picked out frames and they had my glasses ready within 24 hours. This place is independently owned, no flashy decor or gimmicky marketing. It's a little shabby but their team seems highly qualified and their products were very reasonable. I walked in today to schedule an exam & they told me that they take my insurance (which is a $10 copay for an eye exam) and then told me that I had to pay a $60 copay. When I inquired why I would have to pay $60 instead of the $10, the young receptionist lady responded with "oh you probably have to pay that too to your insurance or something..." So needless to say, I told her that I would continue to look elsewhere for an optometrist. read more

Went here to get contacts. Mine were fitted poorly and fall out constantly. Also, they charge me for a years worth of supply and with VSP, that take away from both your 2 credits you only get every two years. Not only did that take away my credits to get glasses, but I only got 1 years worth of supply of contacts for two years. The doctors are dishonest and only out to make money, they do not care about their patients. This place is trash and disgusting as well. read more

"Dr." Tom was terrible. He rushed through the exam as quickly as he could, and particularly when testing lenses to evaluate what prescription I needed. As a result, I do not have confidence that my prescription is right, considering I hardly had time to look through the two he was asking me to compare (the same problem as Ed d). The attitude of this "doctor" was also terrible, and everything he said was conveyed in a tone of exasperation, as if he wanted to be doing anything apart from examining my eyes and determining 1. if there were any problems and 2. what prescription lenses I needed. He is an optometrist, but I don't know why he chose to go into that field if he hates the work so much. After all, I highly doubt that anybody forced him into the profession. So, if you want a correct prescription, I would recommend going elsewhere. In all seriousness, I feel like a high school dropout with 30 minutes training on how to use the different machines could have done a better job than this supposedly highly educated "doctor". read more

I went for an eye exam today and the front ladies were very nice. Optometrist Tom took me in for an eye exam, and usually, the doctor is very clear and saying 1 or 2, which ones better? He was very unclear in which ones he wanted me to compare. I had to keep asking which two are you comparing? And he was very mellow and uninterested. He just wanted to get the exam over with and did not care anymore than finishing the exam... wow... I paid $200 dollars for this service. I am so sad and mad that I wasted my money. Also, I needed my nose pad replaced..... and they said $6 HAHA Most places are free and it's just basic manners... especially if I got my eye exam HHAA so funny, I just left cuz I know I can get it free elsewhere. I don't understand the negative posts up here because I just went to see Dr. Tom for a routine visit today and I had a great experience, hands down. The front desk staff are extremely friendly and helpful. They make the insurance process a breeze by walking me through my coverage to help me make the most of it and they also do the filing for you, so all you have to do is cover your co-pay and that's it. When the doctor was running a few minutes late with a previous appointment, they kept me informed the whole time. Then after my appointment, they gave me free contact lens solution and a Starbucks gift-card as a new patient! Bonus! Dr. Tom was definitely professional and I didn't feel rushed at all. He explained each procedure as we went along and made sure to ask me if I had any questions throughout. Overall, I was in and out in under an hour and received great service the whole time- from the doctor and his staff. I'll definitely be back! read more

I wear safety glasses -- special shatter-resistant lenses in reinforced frames. Not every optometrist can put new lenses in the frames, as it requires special tools. So I called around to find a place that could do them. Most places told me they couldn't, but not Davis Optical. Davis Optical heard on the phone that I needed shatter-resistant lenses in safety frames twelve days before I went in for new glasses, and were happy (literally, very perky tones) to say that they could absolutely do it. A couple days before going in, another call and another verification that they would be open on the day I had free, and that they could put new shatter-resistant lenses in safety frames. Different person on the phone, a bit less perky, but still convinced that they absolutely could do what I needed. Parking in the University District is a hassle, but can be done if necessary. Still, I wound up walking almost three blocks to get to Davis Optical from the closest public parking I could find. When I got in the door, I was greeted in a friendly manner, and I explained what I needed -- shatter-resistant lenses in safety frames. So they give me paperwork to fill out, make a copy of my prescription, do everything but physically accept the glasses and take payment. So I hand them my glasses and suddenly there's a problem. "Oh. These are shatter-resistant lenses in safety frames. We don't do those." Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot...over? Not one of the people they had answering phones or working the desk listened to a single word about what I needed, and instead of telling me up front not to waste a drive into the city and annoying parking, they completely wasted my time and theirs. They even parroted the words they had been told on the phone about what I needed them to do when they finally informed me in person that they could not do it. I suppose it could be worse, they could have actually tried anyway and ruined my glasses. But seriously, people. If you lie to your customers up to and even through giving a firm quote, you ought to expect problems to arise. read more

This was the worst experience I've ever had with a business. I went with my prescription from my Doc for reading glasses. They made them and they were wrong so they had to do them over. I brought a few pairs of sunglasses with me to have fixed. The man waiting on me said no problem and then proceeded to snap them in half right in from of me.He barely apologized and then took the next pair and did the same thing. I couldn't believe my eyes. Back to my reading glasses......after a few months I noticed the glass got crinkly and I couldn't see out of them. I have never seen that happen in all my years. They agreed to do them over but after a few months the same thing happened. I finally had to throw them out. They obviously use the cheapest product on earth. now I have no reading glasses and my 3 pairs of sunglasses are all in the garbage. They didn't give me any compensation...nothing! read more

These four stars go primarily to Sandy, the really nice woman who helped me try on frames last week. (I'm still looking, going to check out Paris Miki in the ID next). She was very friendly, not pushy, and didn't make fun of my current glasses, which have both arms broken off and were balancing on my nose. When I called back to get details on the model so that I could see if I could get it cheaper online, she didn't give me any attitude about it--and today she took some pictures of me in the glasses so I could see how they compared with others that I'll be looking at. I will say that last time I was in there (when my glasses originally broke about a year ago--I got contacts in-between, then got an eye infection, long story), the lady I talked to was a little snooty--I wasn't dressed very well. But this time around things were great. I haven't used their optometrist, so I can't comment on that. But as far as a place to buy glasses, it seems pretty nice. read more

I had a wonderful experience with Davis Optical Express. I have never had so much fun buying glasses and they are the nicest pair I've ever owned. Here's some of the reasons why they are so great. Speedy Service - They don't advertise this, but Davis Optical may be able to make your glasses the same day. I called beforehand with my prescription to confirm that my prescription lens was in stock and was told that glasses could be made the same day. They make their glasses onsite, so there is a short turnaround time, even if you can't get same day glasses. Customer Service - I went to the store and the sales associate picked about 10 frames that she thought would look good on me. I tried on each frame 2-3 times while we narrowed it down to the perfect frame. The sales associate was very patient and seemed to enjoy helping me find the right frames to fit my tastes and lifestyle. Also...Davis Optical does not file directly with the insurance company, so I had to pay up front. However, they filed an insurance reimbursement claim on my behalf. No Pressure Sales - The sales associate wanted me to get glasses that I really like, that were in my budget. She did not try to persuade me to purchase additional unnecessary services. Transparent Costs - The cost of the frame with a single standard lens is written on the corner of each pair glasses. Scratch protection and anti-reflective coating is included in this cost. They also have a sign posted in the middle of the back of the store that provides a cost range for upgrades such as thinner lenses. read more

Had one of the screws on my ray bans fall out while in town for the 4th of July weekend. Googled the closest place that I thought would be able to help. Unfortunately the screw, more like a cap screw, on the new ray bans are unusual. But they tightened the one that was still there and I was on my way. Gotta love old school service! I felt like I needed to respond to this place because there is nothing wrong with the Dr or with the service they provide. Dr Tom has been nothing but nice to me and he never rushes me out the door or ignores my questions. My appointments tend to be very routine, but I have never had any bad experiences. The staff and Dr go out of their way to help me out, get me extra "trial" pairs of contacts and get all the reimbursement from my insurance that is possible. I recommend this place especially if you are a graduate student at UW and need a good place that is close to campus and takes graduate insurance. read more

I've been a Davis Optical customer for over 40 years. I am no longer a Davis Optical customer. I had them install lenses in frames I had at their Factoria location that eventually cracked - both sides! I took them for an evaluation and was told that the lenses used were too hard / brittle for the titanium frame I had. So I went to Davis in the U District (the Factoria location shut down) and I was basically told "too bad".$200 for nothing. Not even a break on replacements. I'm not looking for a freebee, just some kind of acknowledgement and maybe a break on the price of buying the RIGHT lenses. I have since done business elsewhere. read more

This is going to be a long review so please bear with me. So i Book an appointment with Dr. Tom for contact lenses. The first appointment and check literally lasted for ten minutes and Dr. Tom gives me prescription some lenses to try on. He does not even bother to answer any of my questions let alone telling me what kind of lenses he is giving me. He neglected me When I asked if there are any precautions that I should take and says that the prescribed lenses are day lenses so don't wear them for more than a day. So I asked him what does he mean by day? 24 hours? Can I wear them overnight? He gets irritated by so many questions and escorts me out of the office and says that the lady at the reception will help me. So after this first appointment I patiently wait for the first trial lenses to arrive. It took 3 weeks for them to come. So I finally go and collect them and set up a second appointment to follow up which literally latest for less than two minutes. I came back next week as the vision with my left eye was blurry. When I tell the doctor about it he simply prescribes me a different brand of lenses. I request him to recheck my power of the eye and he again gets mad and ultimately never does the rechecking. So this cycle continues until I try two other brands and finally he reprimands me for not being satisfied with anything. So the bottom line is that Dr. Tom is an extremely rude person and he absolutely doesn't give a shit about his patients. Most horrible experience ever for me. All he want is money. So do yourself a favour and stay away from this place. read more

Poor customer service. Impersonal. Dishonest. Over the phone they said that they took my insurance and they asked for my insurance number. However, it was only AFTER my appointment that they gave me back my insurance cards and said "They won't cover you, SO YOU HAVE TO PAY" I have double coverage (with a company that they said they accepted) and they charged me $115 for my annual eye exam. They should have told me this BEFORE my appointment. This company is in the business of ripping students off. There are many other honest optometrists in the city of Seattle - go to someone else. read more

I recently found out that I needed glasses, well I guess I kinda knew since things further than 10 feet away were kinda blury and out of focus, but that is beside the point. Davis has a great selection of frames, lenses and contacts to choose from. Everybody that works there is really friendly and willing to take time to help you find the frames that you like best. They dont rush you and really seem to make sure that you are happy with your choices before you leave the store. Having several different locations makes it easy to stop by a location no matter where you are in the seattle/eastside area. read more
