They have a lot of cool items.. jams, soaps.. all kinds of eggs for sale, homemade goods, refrigerated fish and shellfish, frozen meats , fresh produce and berries! The people that work there were so nice and got me taken care of pretty fast. She explained pricing by size and she was open about their pricing which I appreciated. Today when I walked up they were counting out delicious looking clams, I was there for shrimp or I would have gotten some of the clams. Trust me I will be back for clams. Looked up Grant's on Yelp and headed straight there. Upon arrival, I was greeted by a very enthusiastic dog... and then another dog! And then an adorable sleeping cat! Apparently there was another cat lurking about, but I never met them. The gentleman working there welcomed me and invited me inside. I asked how buying oysters goes because I had never purchased them fresh before. He directed me to the gentleman running the place who told me the current price for a bushel was $70, half for $40. I gave the woman at the desk my credit card while I chatted them up. They've been in busy since 1939, selling crabs, oysters, grouper, snapper, you name it. People tend to wipe them out daily, so it's best to show up as early as possible. I thanked everyone (including the animals) and drove home with my half-bushel in hand. Thank goodness I had a random cardboard box in my car or else I would have gotten ocean water all in the trunk. And, of course, the oysters were sublime. Salty with a smooth ocean aftertaste. Great raw and steamed, but even better with cocktail sauce and lemon juice on top. Yes, I ate half a bushel by myself in three days. It took a day to clean them all! Don't judge me. Local fisherman drop off their daily catch and much comes from Florida and along the coast. So far, I've tried the local lump crab (made incredible crab cakes), the large head-on shrimp, (shrimp scampi-yum), clams (made a stew) and the flounder (so dang fresh). I'll be going back for more today. They carry every fish you can imagine and live crabs. The fish is in coolers and they will fillet the larger fish for you. Prices are downright reasonable. The clerks are super friendly and will bag up your purchases with plenty of ice. They also carry seasonings and a few frozen prepared fish foods. There was plenty of parking during off season and no wait for service. I'm guessing that during peak season, things get busy. This market is a MUST visit for seafood lovers.

To which I replied "Yes, I understand that I'm planning ahead". She huffed and said, "Check back in late April" and stormed out of the office...probably to sit on the rocks and lure unsuspecting fishermen in only to crash their boats. So, given that sea hag's attitude was as salty as the air, I recommend hitting another Sneads Ferry fish monger who will appreciate your business or perhaps employ kinder staff without the 'tude.

The fish seemed much fresher at Blue Ocean and the smell was so much milder. I had a lot of questions and the guy at the counter was so helpful and friendly! He also did an amazing job packing my fish and shrimp with tons of ice for the drive. I made some of the shrimp as soon as I got home and it was awesome! Had the most bizarre visit here. After seeing their specials board advertising $5.99/pound…read moreflounder, I went inside and asked for 4 pounds - when I went to check out it was over $90! After pointing out the specials board, first they tried to tell me it wasn't on special and then after she physically went outside and read the board that THEY put out there, they said that was only for their frozen fish. I did not ending up purchasing the fish but called later just to see if their stories would stay consistent and they said over the phone that all flounder was $5.99/pound and that they would weigh it after the cleaned it. I then told her I was the same person who tried to purchase the flounder earlier on special and she still made up different stories about what I was trying to purchase vs what was on the specials board. Felt like they were trying to take advantage of a local because maybe they thought I was a tourist. Very disappointed and will be taking all my seafood business to Captain Jim's instead. Also, tried to purchase blue crabs last summer and after they checked, they were all dead from being too cold in their freezer. @Blue Ocean - do better!
