Dr. Vicuña, as well as the other staff, was great, professional, and very straightforward about what was happening and costs.

Is this place trying to rip us off? My initial visit, dentist quoted me for deep cleaning, fillings, crowns, removals, etc. Every procedure has its own code - I called my insurance to find out copays for these codes. It turns out the copay amount from insurance is different that what they quoted me. Called insurance and dentistry again trying to figure out as to why they don't match. Staff said codes are incorrect when descriptions clearly match and codes are universal. I don't understand people who commend Davis Smiles for giving transparent quotes, have they ever accessed their online insurance account to check copays? On a second note, dentist recommended some kind of procedures that are shockingly expensive and refused to perform basic fixings which would result in a considerably lower cost, even with their ripping off quotes. I felt that I had to get a second opinion when the staff changed tone and said "he's really looking out for your best interests". Second opinion is free and that dentist said they are totally unnecessary - in fact, even if I wanted to have them, he would advise against it. Incorrect quotes happened to my friends when I told them to check. The rating remain as such until they change quotes. Otherwise, we would just drag everyone we know, they drag everyone they know, out of that place, and then there were none. Do yourself a favor and possibly your parents. Go check with the insurance and understand a little bit. This is definitely an easier thing to do than getting a B on an everyone recommended low-div class. read more

I waited almost a month for an appt to see endodontist (my dentists office does not have an endodontist) only to find out their "call center" scheduled me for a regular dental exam, which I don't need b/c my dentist referred me for an endodontist evaluation. Waste of my time! Very disappointing service. Seems like the usual slick Davis dentistry offices - which is why I see a dentist in Sacramento. I honestly wished I hadn't went to this place it was a waste of my time and a waste of A LOT of money. As a UC Davis student covered through SHIP I was heavily reliant on the reviews left here on yelp. Don't be fooled!!! 1. Appointments take almost an entire month to book. And wait time at the offices from my experience was 40+mins 2. Procedures are EXPENSIVE after insurance be prepared to spend a couple of hundred of dollars I.e. $130 just for cleaning... $360 for X-rays! 3. Hidden charges not explained throughly by the offices... DONT SIGN ON THE PIN PAD! Make sure you see everything being signed! SKETCHY AF! 4. Services were sub par... they didn't have an available assistant when I was finally being seen by the dentist, so I had to wait another 10+mins for an available assistant. I was then poked and prodded HURRIEDLY in the gums and began to bleed. I was offered no rinse, no water, no suction. I had to excuse myself to use the rest room because I was bleeding extensively in the month. I don't usually write reviews but I thought this was such a terrible experience that it needed to be shared. Please take this review into consideration before booking with them. read more

Avoid. There are lots of better dentists in the town than this one. I have been here for 3+ years and definitely see the quality of services decrease rapidly. Very corrupted place. They just want to take your money and schedule lots of unnecessary appointments that beyond your insurance coverage, and they don't care: after the fact charged, poor quality of cleaning and filling, rush appointment. Dentists and hygienist are mediocre. Save your energy and money to other more mature dental office. They have nice looking office interior, but the quality of service is very poor. I have been going to the same dentist almost all of my life. So has 90% of my family on my fathers side. I also like to stay within a ten mile radius of my home. Going to Davis for this Sacramento resident is an unusual thing, reserved for the Thai food at Sophia's. That being said, I think Davis Smiles now has a new loyal customer. The friendly and knowledgeable staff made me feel like part of the team. The cleaning went by so fast I hardly noticed it had started. The explanations of what was needed was done in layman's terms. Within five minutes of studying my X-rays, the good Doctor had a game plan for my teeth. I have only cheated on the family dentist one other time, that was because I lived in the Bay Area. Once again Dr. Vicuna applied his expertise and caring to fix my missing front teeth. I was in a desperate situation when my bridge for 3 front teeth came off! I was worried about exposing gum, fragility of the anchoring stub tooth and rod, plus not a pretty sight affecting my ability to to do my work. Dr. Vicuna took me in first thing, carefully made adjustments, took time to make sure every aspect of bridge fitting was perfection and gently reinserted bridge. Growing up I was very negligent when it came to my dental health, and I thought my teeth were doomed. That said, I was really reluctant to make an appointment after not seeing a dentist for the majority of my life. I still decided to do so because I really wanted a healthy smile. Dr. Sergio Vicuna, DDS: Dr. Vicuna made my visits very pleasant. He explained to me that I needed a deeper cleaning and I had to remove a cavity on the right side of my mouth. We scheduled an appointment to do so and I got in and out within an hour. He was very kind, knowledgeable, and made me feel like his own as soon as I met him. Sonja Moran, RDH: I spent most of my time here with Sonja because she was responsible for my deep clean in two different two hour sessions. I was really nervous, but she was very sweet and made everything very comfortable for me. On our second session, she even worked through her lunch to finish my procedure. Overall, I would recommend this place to anyone- especially UCD Students that are under SHIP. I am now on my way to having a great smile thanks to these two great professionals. WARNING: Do NOT go here, they DO NOT CARE about your well-being, only your money!!! This place is a COMPLETE SCAM. If I could give negative stars, I would. I came here for the $59* exam / cleaning (yes I was aware of the asterisk, but boy did I not expect what was coming)... I've always had strong, healthy teeth, have never had a cavity and get cleanings 1-2 x / year. Well, once my dependent insurance was up, I decided to try this new place based on the positive reviews here. The x-ray tech didn't know what she was doing; she had to re-do some of my pictures because of positioning, and was very awkward trying to set everything up. NEXT, I was told the dentist would come in, and after waiting 20 minutes in the dentist chair staring at the ceiling, they suddenly remembered they had glasses for the bright lights... okay cool...Then they told me the dentist wasn't coming, and instead, the hygienist was coming to measure my gum pockets. After she roughly pokes around without so much as a "hello," she tells me my gums are inflamed...well DUH! You just poked the sh*t out of them. Finally, the dentist comes to talk to me...umm... HELLO?! what about the cleaning? After spewing a bunch of bull about how I may need fillings (no, my old dentist tells me every year they're not necessary), laser treatment for the inflammation (it's called flossing more) + drugs (what?!), a special deep cleaning (....?), and blah blah blah and a bunch of other garbage ....I get an estimate of $1600 for 4 separate appts to be scheduled another time. I had to get a crown done and the dentist put a temporary cement on my permanent crown. I came back today after 2 weeks. I was in the room for over one hour, 2 dental assistants and the dentist took turn to get the crown off with the "temporary" cement. My gums are bleeding, my lips are bruised, and the permanent crown probably damaged. And after one hour, they were like "sorry, cant remove it". Someone messed up, THIS IS NOT TEMPORARY CEMENT Now, I have to go back to get the crown shaved off, and then go through the entire process of getting a new crown made. This is just backwards. I went in for a teeth whitening on September 10th, 2018. The lady did not set it up correctly. After an hour of laborious set-up, the protective barrier was not put on my gums properly. The chemicals she applied to my teeth began to burn my gums and leaked onto my lip and started burning my flesh. The lady had just set the timer and left so nobody was there to help me I had to run out of the room to get someone to help me. She wipes off the chemicals and tries to set up the whitening again. I refuse. My flesh is burning. I'm in pain. I stopped the treatment. Keep in mind my mouth is stuffed full of cotton and chemicals I can barely communicate. She says ok and removes everything. My lip is obviously burned. She says "oh, sorry about that, do you want to reschedule?" Uh, no thanks. She says my lip is just discolored and it's fine. It's not fine. I can barely eat. My gums are sore and burned and my lip is raw and swollen. They do not seem to care at all. I didn't even get a sincere apology. Pictures attached. read more

My girlfriends birthday was coming up and her teeth were stained from years of smoking. Kids don't smoke and stay in school. I wanted to buy her zoom teeth whitening as a birthday present. I had zoom whitening here several years ago and had a good experience, no pain or burns. I scheduled the appointment with Davis Smiles and said I wanted zoom whitening and they said great and booked an appointment for her. Well, later find out that they have switched the type of whitening they use and are using Nazi era chemical warfare technology versus the zoom whitening. They burnt the crap out of my girlfriend(see review below) and caused her tremendous pain, and now 4 days later we are out at Chez Panisse for her birthday dinner and she can't even enjoy her food because her burnt lip hurts so much. +1 Star because I get to eat her food. But our $300 for the dinner is a bust. Anyways, I am questioning my 4 year dentistry relationship with Davis Smiles Dentistry because they hurt the love of my life and ruined her very important birthday(the big one). The receptionist was probably just in a bad mood but she was so rude and even though I had an appointment for my 1st eval and cleaning she refused to even let me speak to the dr because I said I didn't want X-rays for medical reasons. She said they would refuse to even do a cleaning until I consented to X-rays. I asked her about trying to come back and she wouldn't answer she just continued to repeat the same thing over and over. The waiting room was completely full with no seats. I never did even see a dentist so I can't speak to anything in the back office. I wonder if since they were so busy they didn't mind loosing a customer and that is disappointing that they didn't care enough to even do a general exam or basic cleaning. read more

How can I give a zero star rating?? I came here for 2 reasons- 1. My insurance was 100% accepted. 2. From the yelp reviews. Boy was that a mistake to go here. I should have known as soon as I walked in this wouldn't go well. I arrived about 5 minutes prior to my appointment, as soon as I walked in the office was probably 70 degrees with the AC going, I had to walk out and get a sweater because it was so cold. Then I sat in the waiting room for over 20 minutes. I was taken back to get my X-rays done by a girl who had very little experience. I told her how small my mouth was and she shoved a huge bite wing X-ray in my mouth which I then spit out. I told her again and she insisted. I was then led to another room and was seen by a Dr. Fowler who basically said that she could do a root canal and would need to pull my tooth out because their wasn't enough tooth to do a root canal on. At this time I am shaking in fear of losing my tooth and then the office manager lady comes in and goes over the financial part. They try to up sell this crown called a lava crown and I walked out of their with an estimate of almost $5,000. Yeah never going back. I went back to my dentist who has 25+ years of experience and he said my root canal is a text book one and can be saved. This place is a joke!! BEWARE!!!! read more

I literally doubt why there are many good reviews for this place. The environment is good and clean. For sure they put money in it. However, the thing I care most is whether they are professional or not. They are not. I was referred to this place by my insurance company, so they knew exactly what type of my insurance was. With that, they overcharged me for hundreds of dollars. I couldn't believe it when I saw the price list they give me. I wish it was simply a mistake but I highly doubt it. The front desk has done an awful job on that day. I was sitting there for around twenty minutes, she just didn't want to say hi to me, even when there were nobody around except me. Come on, your job is to greet people isn't it? .... In all, I don't recommend this place. My insurance told me there were several complaints about their overcharges. Went for a cleaning and fillings, came out five hours later with a crown that is super sensitive even almost a year later. When I mentioned the time, was offhandedly rebuked that I "didn't have anything else better to do anyway". Was convinced if I didn't get the type of fillings they recommended that the other option would be dangerous to my health and need imminent replacing. Dr. V had a rough way of doing procedures, from the crown to even the adjustment I tried to get at a later date. I told him the way he was working hurt and he said there was nothing he could do about it. Thousands of dollars later, I now have sensitive teeth/gums, a fear of manipulative sales tactics, dental treatments, dentists with no compassion, and zombies (five hours of walking dead inches from my face that I tried to insist I didn't want to watch, I never watch tv at home and have no love of zombies!). I originally chose this dentist because it accepted my plan and I mistakenly thought it was the dentist recommended by friends, turns out to be incorrect, and lots of friends actually have had equally bad experiences here. read more

I went here because I was having a hard time getting an appointment with my regular dentist and I needed my crown replaced. Big mistake. They took xrays and pictures of my teeth. They showed me pictures of what they said were my teeth and reccommended I get "deep cleaning" as well as the crown. When they showed me pictures of "my" teeth I thought "wow that really does look bad" and considered it. They said I had early stages of some gum disease and it was going to be getting worse soon. But after thinking about it I doubted it was even pictures of my teeth. I get my teeth cleaned regularly and I kind of know what is going on in my mouth. I ended up getting an appointment with my regular dentist and they replace my crown and told me everything else looked really good. Today I got a bill for over $500 for xrays and a "comprehensive oral exam". This was basically a consultation where they took xrays and pictures and poked me with the tool and called out the numbers. No cleaning, no nothing. 4 separate $90 charges for the same thing which is also BS. I am going to be disputing this bill. read more

Davis Smiles Dental office is unethical and please be cautious. Here is my experience: 1. The front office told me that if my previous dentist did not use the same software for xrays, that they would require new sets of xrays for myself and all my kids. I called the software company the images only need to be in a jpeg form. 2. They require rays on the kids every 6 months, which is not in the pediatric guidelines for dental practices. The guideline is 12-24 months for my kids ages and the dentist refused to treat my family because we refused to take xrays every 6 months. 3. It appears that the office is working very hard to make the business and charging for services that may not be covered under insurance and therefore putting more cost responsibility onto the patient. I love the smiles dentistry chain. I've been to Livermore's, Davis', Folsom's, and now Dublin's offices. (I moved away 3yrs ago for college) The Davis and Folsom offices were AMAZING. Great customer service, I loved my hygienist and really everyone there in both offices. I was treated nicely, I felt comfortable and welcome. They even made sure to pull my files from Livermore and help me transition easily. After I moved back home, I transferred myself back to Livermore's location. I struggled with their customer service. They made it difficult to transfer back, they had no patience with me. They wouldn't answer my call even after I had just gotten off the phone with them. When I went in, I felt really criticized and attacked. I was also annoyed because they didn't have my old records from Davis and Folsom so we wasted a lot of time going over procedures I had already done. When we scheduled my next appt, it never went through. Then again, with the terrible phone service, I worked with them to update my contact information so they wouldn't be calling my mom and two days later I find out that also never went through because they still ended up contacting my mother instead of me to confirm my appt. Because of their inability to provide quality customer service, I decided to switch to Dublin's, which I LOVED. They answered their phones, didn't make me feel attacked, they were able to get all my files from the other offices including livermore. Each employee I came in contact with was GENUINE. It was like we've been friends the entire time. I felt so at home even though the dentist gives me so much anxiety. Dr. Singh is AMAZING and so gentle. I love that office and they have done such a good job taking care of me and providing QUALITY CUSTOMER SERVICES on all aspects of my experiences with them. read more

TWO IMPORTANT THINGS FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS TO KNOW ARE IN THIS REVIEW. This is my second time coming here. The first was for a root canal (which I was terrified of), and then getting all four of my wisdom teeth taken out. I have always HATED the dentist. I hate the atmosphere, I hate dreading the procedure, etc. But all of these things were not a problem at Davis Smiles Dentistry. I was so amazed at how un-intimidating the atmosphere was. It made visits much less terrifying. (They even have a Keurig and a Playstation!) #1 All of the staff there are really sweet and friendly. Even the doctors/surgeons/dentists that are technically not a part of the office. PLEASE READ WHAT FOLLOWS: Shout out to Crystal at the front desk who really advocated for me and my case when I had to pay for my wisdom teeth surgery, which is pretty much a $2800 procedure without insurance. When my first insurance was pretty much spent from the recent root canal, Crystal really tried to work things out with me so that I wouldn't have to pay $2300 out of pocket. She was working with me for at least three weeks where we were calling back and forth trying to figure out secondary insurance. The results? I ended up paging only $235 out of pocket. That is amazing. Be in a college student I felt so lost navigating the health and insurance system but Crystal kept encouraging me to see it to the end. Come here for people who don't just see you as a number, or a piggy bank that's easy to take advantage of. #2 UC Davis students, they take UCSHIP here!! That helped me a lot. I just got the surgery today. I was treated so well and the recovery seems to be going great. DO NOT go to this office. Save yourself the headache and go to Davis Dental Practice instead! I went in 6 months ago, back in November for a cleaning. I am a very nervous dental patience and am particular about who I see. Upon arrival to my appointment I was told- oh by the way your doctor moved to New Zealand so you are seeing someone else today. I took time off of work for this visit that I already was not thrilled about. I was NOT told at that time that the Dentist, Dr. Vakili's "contract was pending", so I would have to pay a bill. I received a bill last month, called the office and was told my balance due was zero. I received a new bill today and was told that I owe that amount because my insurance company, who I no longer carry, "sent me a check". Also- the office can't call the insurance company, I have to, and I owe Davis Smiles Dentistry the $130.00 bill for a visit that should have been covered. Maybe you shouldn't allow your Dentists to practice until their contract is confirmed. Talk about POOR BUSINESS! Wow. read more

This place is great. I followed Dr. Vicuna from the office he worked at in Roseville. Roseville was so far for me, I live in east sac - so I am SO happy to be only driving 15-20 min to Davis. When I had my first appointment in Davis I was so pleased at the office. Super clean and all the stuff is new and it smells good :) The front desk staff called to confirm my appointment and was friendly over the phone and as soon as i walked in the door she knew exactly who I was and was very welcoming. I have very sensitive teeth and Dr. Vicuna always remembers that and instructs the assistant to please be very gentle with me and even to not use the cold water or the freezing air when sucking the water out :) The assistant was amazing. She was so gentle. I used to sit in the dentist chair so tense with 2 fists and sweating. haha so funny to think of now. Going to the dentist should NOT have to be such a horrible experience. I just closed my eyes and let then clean my teeth. It was time away from the kids and it was kind of relaxing :) I highly recommend this dentist and this dental office. read more

I went here the other day to get my teeth cleaned and was specifically told by the receptionist and the dentist assistant that everything is 100% covered by my plan. My bill arrived today and I was charged $718 just to get my teeth cleaned. My Delta Dental plan provided by UC Davis only covered 185$. So I am left paying $370 out of pocket. I was charged 4 payments of $75 for a 2D X-ray I had no idea was not covered by my insurance and the dentist assistant never mentioned the extra charge of doing this procedure on me. I assumed what she was doing was regular X-rays. I was also charged $70 for "oral hygiene instructions". I have no idea what that means. The dentist never gave me any oral hygiene instructions. Just to floss my bottom teeth more. Is that what they're charging me $70 for??? I'm enraged by this. I'm a broke college student who came here due to the good reviews and it seems as if they're trying to charge me for anything they can possibly receive money for. UPDATE: After speaking with a receptionist I was informed that the amount Delta Dental had sent me was just an EOB. Big mistake on my part! Apart from that mistake made by me, my experience here was pleasant. I was helped right away by the receptionist and only waited for about 10 minutes after my scheduled time. I came here as my first dental office after leaving my parents insurance, and they have been nothing but wonderful. Wait times are always short, the hygienists are nice, and my dentist is awesome. Everything is explained before hand and they listen when I ask for more explanation or when I ask silly questions. Do you hate the dentist? That's because you haven't been here. I am plaqued by chronic mouth sores and on my first visit, I had one under my tongue the size of a dime. I hadn't eaten in two days. They used a laser on the sore (and the three other smaller ones) and the next day the pain was totally gone and within 5 days it was completely healed. When I went back a few days later for a cleaning, Dr Vicuna found that my 20 year old fillings and tongue-ring cracked teeth (don't do it kids!!) were severely in need of MAJOR work, as bacteria had gotten under the old fillings and was millimeters from my roots. Now, I'm a single mom who's Obamamcare hadn't gone through at that time yet, so I was able to save a down payment (which took me all summer) and now I'm paying the rest over 4 months, praise be to whatever g-d you choose or don't choose. I spent all summer avoiding caramel because I was afraid my teeth would fall out. That ends next week! The actual procedure to fix my teeth happened 2 days ago now. It didn't hurt until about 4 hours later, when the Novocaine wore off, but that pain was gone in another hour. And the Valium Dr Vicuna prescribed not only helped with the dental visit, but later that day, it allowed my partner and I to have the best relationship counseling session we've ever had. I was so calm! I'll be sure to plan the work on the other side of my mouth on another day we have therapy! read more

Broke a tooth on Sunday and was able to get an appt on Tuesday. Dr. Vicuna and staff did a fabulous job. Especially for someone who was terrified to go in. With the modern technology they use, I was able to get two teeth crowned in just a couple of hours. And it was painless. I will definitely be back and will refer Davis Smiles to others. read more
