Easily the best food truck that I have experienced The Divine Swine, the pulled pork Empanadas were delicious, I mean delicious is not enough to describe them, they were also appetizing, delectable, delightful, divine, enjoyable, enticing, exquisite, good, gratifying, heavenly, mouthwatering, savory, scrumptious, tasty and yummy. The Empanadas was cooked perfectly, the dough was perfect, nice consistent, excellent flavor and that was just the outside, the pulled pork instead was even better. Flat out great, moist, flavorful, all around perfect. Good deal for what you get as well, they Empanadas are 3.50 a piece or 3 for 9, I took the deal and discount and I am glad I did. The Empanadas are not huge but are surprisingly filling. Two was more than enough for me to fill full and I probably should have saved the third for later but they were way too good and I finished all three in one setting. What else can I say, I love The Divine Swine Empanadas from this truck and look forward to not only having them in the future but trying other versions from this truck as well. read more

I needed a quick lunch while in DC so I stopped by the DC Empanadas truck. I opted for the three empanadas for $10 deal. DC Empanadas changes up the menu everyday and offers some daily specials. On today's menu there was the badass (buffalo chicken with blue cheese), the ropanada (shredded beef with rice in a tomato sauce) and the divine swine (pulled pork). When I ordered my food, my empanadas were ready to go before I finished paying. I guess they keep them hot under a heat lamp. But the empanadas were still hot and tasty when I got them. This probably also explains why there was no line during the weekday lunch rush. The ropanada was my least favorite empanada. It wasn't very flavorful and the beef tasted a bit dry.I had to put tons of hot sauce on it to compensate. The divine swine was pretty good. The pulled pork was on the sweet/tangy side. And the badass was my favorite empanada. It had a nice kick to it and the blue cheese was melted nicely inside. While reasonably priced at 3 for $10 (or was it $11?), I expected a little more in terms of flavor. I got one each of the Luchador (chipotle beef), Divine Swine (BBQ pork), and Tio Shawn (black bean). They are super heavily deep fried, so they pro if that they're crunchy and the con is that it's a gut bomb. The best of the bunch was the black bean. The pork was really eh, and the beef was blah. Today was the day where the food trucks aligned and I decided to try DC empanadas. I LOVE empanadas and I've had the real deal in Argentina so I'm always wary about seeing empanadas on a menu and wondering how they were going to taste. I knew ahead of time that DC empanadas is different because of the variety of non-traditional flavors they have. There's nothing wrong with variety, but it still needs to taste good. I ordered one Sunday Dinner empanada just to see how it tasted. My first impression based on looks was that it was small; especially for $3.50/ pop. My second impression upon tasting it, was that it was really doughy tasting and I didn't really care for the taste of the dough itself. I feel like the dough was too thick, but that's probably to hold the heavy ingredients sucessfully. The taste of the ingredients was just ok. Some bites were really peppery and other bites had zero flavor. Overall the experience was rather forgettable. Would I order again from DC empanadas? I don't think so. I'd rather hold off for something better. **After posting my review I decided to go back and read the other yelp reviews. Someone said that these empanadas taste more like a samosa. A year or two in, DC Empanadas continues to be one of the best DC-area food trucks. As a Farragut Square worker, I've been spoiled by the plethora of food trucks during my weekday lunch hour. I have fallen in love with, and continue to be a huge fan of, DC Empanada's Divine Swine (pulled pork empanada). However, and not complaining, my visits have consistently aligned with the availability with this succulent BBQ-y hand pie. Today, however, my luck ran out, or so I thought. I pondered, what the heck, why don't I try their fish tacos today? The person in line behind me apparently found that daring, which I took to be a compliment for my taste for adventure. Well, the decision paid off. I was treated to two delicious fish tacos ($10 for two), with perfectly, almost shatteringly crispy Covina pieces, covered in an apple-jicama slaw and avocado crema, and wrapped in tasty corn tortillas. I even added some of their chimichurri sauce to each taco. The tacos were unbelievably messy, and wonderful, and are not recommended for first dates. That said, with good, understanding company (inclusive of dining solo), and a shady spot to enjoy your lunch, go for it. Already was coming back for the Divine Swine empanada, but am now adding the fish tacos to that list as well! read more

While I am deeply appreciative of DC Emp's deep fried style of their empanadas, I was not pleased with their selection last week at Farragut Square - the Speedy Gonzalez and the Bad-ass are both lazy, at best. Speedy Gonzalez is a plain empanada wih tons of cheese! Because my first experience with DC Emp was the Tio Shawn, I absolutely loved the vibrant mix of flavors and the well-thought out combination of textures and ingredients. It is unfortunate that I'm writing this review based on only one empanada that I had as I would like to try more of their fillings. I was attending a class at Graduate School USA and was outside checking out the food trucks at lunch time. Although I am fascinated by them, but I never bother buying lunch from the trucks as I usually brought lunch from home. I saw the DC Empanadas truck parked away from the rest of the trucks so I decided to walk over. I figured that empanadas would be good for quick breakfast so I bought three for my family to try. I bought the following: The Hulk Bad Ass Divine Swine I didn't eat the empanadas right away. I put them in the fridge while I was in class. When I got home, I didn't feel like eating a big dinner so my son and I each had an empanada and I made a small salad to go with it. I thought the empanada held together pretty well even after I reheated it. The crust (my favorite part) was nice and chewy. I had the Divine Swine and it was flavorful. The filling was just right and not too soggy. My son had the Hulk and he liked it too. The following morning, my husband ate his piece and he really liked it. I spent the next two days looking for DC Empanadas truck outside of Le Enfant Plaza, but it was a bummer that they weren't there. I hope to see them again. read more

I thought these empanadas were awesome. I'm all for baked, "healthy" empanadas, but they don't compare to fried (like these are). Today's selection was Amazingly Aroi - pork, Thai basil, onion, Thai peppers, garlic, and spices; The Badass - Buffalo chicken and blue cheese and their vegetarian empanada was pear and brie. I got one of each; three empanadas for $9. They're not huge, but the three together more than filled me up. I probably wouldn't get them for lunch again just because three of them made me feel like a bloated pig, but I think one would be great for a snack. The crust is thin and crispy and overstuffed with filling. The Badass had a good flavor, but I would have liked a little more chicken/less blue cheese. The Aroi was stuffed full of pork, but I thought it was just a little too salty. The pear and brie was great. I don't like the dessert empanadas at Julia's because the filling is either pasty or like canned pie filling. This was full of chopped, fresh pears. Empanadas are great street food, but these are pretty messy. They held together, but they're really "juicy". Hold them away from your clothes because they leak like crazy. I looked like I murdered somebody after I ate The Badass; hot sauce was running down my hand and arm. I must have hit them at the perfect time today; right after the lunch rush, because there wasn't anyone in line and they still had all of their flavors available. I was in the area of 20th & L for work today, but I don't usually make it up around that way. PLEASE!, PLEASE!, PLEASE! come to L'Enfant plaza! We are DYING for anything different. I've been getting food trucks in DC for almost 4 years and I can say without a doubt that DC Empanadas is my favorite. Whether its great customer service from Anna (the woman up front) or Sean (the fryer) they are always super friendly and get you your order before you can even say hi. The empanadas themselves are also beyond amazing. While I do have favorites (Divine Swine, Tio Shawn, and Jersey Shore), they always offer a very balanced menu (beef, chicken, pork and veggie) means I have never been anything but 100 percent satisfied. To those reviewers whosay their empanada was just ok, I say to you, think about the flavors you got. Where else can you get meatballs, melted parm, and tomato sauce or rice, onions, corn, peppers and cheese in a perfectly fried piece of dough. While I really like a number of other food trucks (ficelle, takorean, eat stix, and cap mac), when my hands are up against the fire I have to choose DC Empanadas). read more

At the Union Market stall, we got 2 empanadas: the Badass (buffalo chicken and blue cheese) and the Thai shrimp. Both were good- fresh, hot, and not greasy. DC Empanadas are freaking awesome! www.foodtruckfiesta.com informed me that this place was opening and I was determined to eat there on their first day open. After some gentle nudging and persuading my coworkers, we were off to DC Empanadas! The empanadas are $3.50 or you can get 3 for $9. They have a ginormous list of empanadas but they only serve three at a time (aka their menu changes often). I wasn't that hungry so I got El Matador which had chorizo, potato, red peppers and all around deliciousness. It was very flavorful and tasty. My coworkers each got all three of the empanadas being offered. They agreed the El Matador was delicious but apparently the Traditional (beef, olives, raisins) was even better. A couple gripes: -I also got the Mexican Hot Chocolate, which if done right would have been very flavorful and tasty. This hot chocolate didn't really have much taste. I could definitely taste some cinnamon but that was about it. -The empanadas are kind of small. My coworker said that 2 would have been enough for a meal, which would be $7 (not bad for lunch), as opposed to Julia's Empanadas which are $4ish and definitely bigger/more of a meal. Had been intrigued by their menu and on Friday they happened to be near my office (I foolishly hadn't done my usual food truck research but was pleasantly surprised!). I got 3 because I felt like a pig and was starving...but also it's an empanada and they are priced 3.50$ or 9.00$ for 3. I got the Big Ragu whiivh was akin to a chicken parm empanada, The special was a braised pork(?) type and finally a beef one that I thought was just ok. The other 2 were really good though. Not sure I'd get the beef one again. The person who took our order was really super friendly and it was fast getting our orders out (there were 3 of us and none of us were standing around for any length of time waiting). Good empanadas, these are fried not baked so they taste a little different than some other ones I've tried. You can't go wrong with the Divine Swine (pulled pork with BBQ sauce) or the Ropanada (Ropa Vieja Style Shredded Beef with Rice Tossed in a Tomato Based Sauce). Excellent empanadas. I tried the Greek, the Ropa Vieja and the Mr. Miyagi empanadas. The crust is very similar to Cuban Empanadas. I was just in Miami the day before I tried these DC empanadas so the texture and flavor is still fresh. It also has a similarity to an eggroll crust, but not nearly as greasy. My assumption is these are Guatemalan style empanada (since one of the owners is from Guatemala) crusts, but can not say for certain. One reviewer here said the empanadas were very greasy. I have to disagree, they are probably one of the least greasy fried things I've ever had. They didn't even stain the white paper bag they came in. For those that are used to Julia's Empanadas, these are not the same style. Being Colombian myself I prefer fried empanadas instead of the sweeter baked variety. The service was excellent as well. Definitely a bright spot in what has been thusfar a pretty disappointing journey into the DC food truck scene. (I feel many trucks are over-hyped and serve overpriced lackluster food) read more

Since I saw DC Empanadas listed on Food Truck Fiesta, I've been dying to try it. Unfortunately, they were never near my office on the days we would be heading out for food truck lunches. Well, I finally lucked out - and it was worth the wait. I was a little worried at first. The line was huge and it wasn't moving. At all. For a few minutes. Thankfully, the weather was nice and any excuse to get out of the office is a welcome one. I'm still not sure what happened, but after a few minutes of waiting, the line started moving again - and fairly quickly. I had used the delay to go over the menu and decide what I wanted to order. It was a tough decision; everything sounded great. Stepping up to the window, I was greeted enthusiastically by the owner. She was friendly and genuine - pretty different from a lot of the other food truck operators. I ended up ordering the Greco, the Cubanito and the Bad Ass empanadas for $9 and an oatmeal cookie with rum soaked raisins for dessert. Grand total: $11.50. Not bad! They seem to be constantly cooking empanadas so that they can pull them out of the warming oven and drop them into bags upon order so that there is minimal wait time from the time of order until delivery of your food. Empanadas aren't usually particularly large - and these weren't either. That's OK though - I got three for $9. I didn't really need the cookie after all that, but I just couldn't resist. I found the Greco (spinach and feta) to be a little dry. I expected the Cubanito (Cuban pork) to be my favorite, but that honor goes to the Bad Ass (Buffalo chicken). These are not your traditional empanadas but I haven't had a single bad empanada here. I've eaten here qute a number of times and I love the constantly rotating flavors and the "fusion" concept. The owner is constantly inventing new and unique flavor combinations such as, one of my favorites for the uniqueness, the "Sunday Dinner" - Diced Beef with Onions, Potatoes, Peas & Carrots in a Velvety Beef Gravy. Empanadas are made fresh in the truck and the line moves exceptionally quickly due to the great execution by the staff. My only wish is for a salad or other veggie dish so I don't feel like such a blob eating 3 fried empanadas for lunch. Not a fan. It's bad when you get two completely different empanadas, and they don't taste all that different. All I taste is fried dough--overpowers everything else. I got the Mama Sophia (special for the day, with eggplant and mozz and some tomato), and the Cubano. The Mama Sophia was tasteless (except for the fried dough part). Love the offerings at DC Empanadas!!! I mean, the truck is blue and looks like a box. And we all know that there are wonderful things that come in a blue box ;) Back to the food. Prices are good: you can get 1 empanada for $4.00 and it's a decent sized empanada. They have an extensive menu, but they rotate their offerings daily. I've had the El Toro which is a beef empanada with beans, cheese, and corn. Mixed with their spices and wrapped in their flaxy warm wrapping and you have a banging emapanda. Let me preface this review by saying that I had no temptation to visit this truck whatsoever before I actually did. I do not like empanadas and I never have. I realize that makes me some strange culinary freak of a human being but most of the empanadas that I have had manage two things in common that I hate: a sweet, almost cloying, pastry shell hiding something savory that I thought best without the pastry bit. Don't get me wrong, I like the mingling of sweet and savory but I just never liked empanadas. Until now. I won't be exhaustive but the shell on these babies are deep fried and I did not find them greasy in the least. You're not getting pastry shell here, be forewarned if that is your kind of thing. I had the three fof $9 deal and got the El Toro, the Bad Ass, and a special one they had that was a mingling of cheeses. So here's how it lays down: The El Toro was by far the best. Wonderfully spiced and flavored meat, melty and warm cheese, some beans, some veggies. It has a cilantro kick (let this serve as a warning for those against cilantro, which I am not, I love the stuff) but this was an amazingly good experience. I also had the Bad Ass which is essentially a mixture of chicken, bleu cheese, and onions in a very savory shell. Delicious. Extremely so. I was not a fan of their cheese offering that day because they used cheeses that didn't melt together and it was kind of a gooey mess. I usually try to bring a veggie or vegan friend along to comment on things I don't order but I didn't have that this time so I am sorry if my review is lacking. Anyway, this is a very good food truck. If you have a healthy appetite, go for the three for $9 deal. I am a small eater but I was still hungry after one. Service here is also impeccable and friendly. They seem to have time for their customers not matter how long the line. Anyway, it is one I would return to. Very, very good. read more

I grabbed a Matador empanada today for lunch at Union Market in NoMa. The line was very long but moved fast. They really have the system down. They could have had two people working double the number of fryers and still had a line. They did a really good job of keeping track of the orders and even the order of the empanadas ("El Greco on top, Matador on the bottom," etc.). The Matador has chorizo and potatoes mixed with spices. It was very good, full of meat, and had a great flavor. I loved the texture of the empanada shell. There were some other flavors I'm curious to try, especially the brie-and-fig (Menage a Trois). I love food truck nosh, and it was nice to get it in a farmers market setting. The empanada crew is one of the more popular ones in the city, for good reason. This place is hype and marketing sans substance. The empanadas aren't even fresh and they cost almost $4 a piece. Just deep fried carbs. They are served in a paper tray and you have the choice of adding hot (red) sauce or verde (green) sauce. It's pretty lame honestly. I'm not sure what the food truck experience is like but I went to the actual kiosk/store they have inside Union Market. The service was quite subpar and it takes them several minutes to get the empanadas ready. Not even sure why this place exists. I got the buffalo chick and blue cheese one. This truck was on K street NW, today on my way to work... And was able to find temporary parking or should i say illegal parking without getting a ticket. :P So I ran over to try these for the first time. I got the 3 for $10. One each the pork, beef, & chicken. There was a vegetable one too, but I'm a meat lover... sorry. My favorite was the beef. The other two was just ok. They do give you a green sauce to go with it. I believe it was a cilantro/pesto sauce. The sauce was flavorful & a good addition to the meal. The skin had a flaky & blistering look with a little bit more chewy than your normal empanadas. More like a fried wonton taste, which I kind of like better, it might be the Asian in me saying that! The only negative is they were small. So make sure to hit-up another food truck as well. I love DC food trucks, and DC Empanadas is no exception. Their shiny new blue truck parked outside my office today, and even though it was freezing outside, I couldn't resist. They fry each empanada to order, so yes, it can be a bit slow. But when I walked my food back to my office, they were still warm. I would much rather have fresh food than fast, stale food, so the wait turned out to be worth it. As a previous reviewer mentioned, they only serve three flavors a day. Today, I tried the Traditional and the Amazingly Aroi (which is essentially a Thai empanada). I really liked both and would definitely have them again, but the Traditional was my favorite. They were both warm and flaky and stuffed to the max with unique ingredients. There are so many flavors to try that I'm sure I will continue stalking them on Twitter @DCEmpanadas. I'm no empanada aficionado, but I think they do a really great job. Two empanadas for $7 was plenty to fill me up for lunch (you can get 3 for $9), and is less than I would have spent at Corner Bakery or Potbelly. read more

Delicious! Definitely worth the wait in line. I haven't had empanadas in a while (or good Mexican food, come to think of it), so I tried all three of the day's flavors. The menu seems to rotate daily, so it's hard to know what choices you'll have. But if all the empanadas are as good as the ones from today, it doesn't matter. I had the WMD (which tastes better than it sounds, more of a subtle chili flavor), the Tio Shawn (tastes like a black bean burrito), and La Verguenza de Tio Shawn, which was my favorite by far (good Mexican flavors, tasty chipotle chicken). Plus, the Mexican hot chocolate was also delicious, with a good mix of chile and cinnamon flavors. You do have to wait a little while since they seem to fry small batches of each empanada at a time, but my food stayed hot far longer than any other food truck. For $11 ($9 for 3 empanadas, $2 for the hot chocolate), it was a great lunch. I'm definitely going back! read more

Of all the food trucks that are circulating in DC, this is one of my favorites! It's my go-to food truck. While their choices vary, I'm still a fan of their traditional and divine swine. The WMD and South Street were pretty good too. I wasn't a huge fan of El Matador. I can't wait to try them all! You simply can't go wrong with delicious flavors in a deep fried pocket. I came to union market a few weeks ago with a meetup group and we made a stop at DC Empanadas. The meetup organizer got us some samples of the beef and the cheese empanadas. The beef was good but I really liked the cheese--so much so that I ordered three cheese empanadas! I also love the fact that they were not just sitting under a heat lamp, I saw the guy actually put them in the fryer. There's nothing like freshly fried empanadas. The guy making my empanadas was pleasant and helpful. I'd like to say that I would try another kind but I'm a creature of habit and would probably get the cheese again. Not sure why DC Empanadas has garnered some low-star reviews, but I was blown away from my "El Mariachi" Chipotle chicken empanada yesterday at Truckeroo. Even though the empanada crust is more fried and comparable to the crispy shell of an egg roll, rather than my preferred flaky empanada dough crust, I still enjoyed the crispiness as I bit into the empanada. The filling is extremely juicy as well. Although the flavors cannot be described as overpowering or overly unique, I found myself savoring each bite and craving another one as I finished the one in my hand. I'm a big sucker for all types of Mexican food, and DC Empanadas definitely hit the spot. While it is definitely something that can be easily replicated at home, I wouldn't mind hitting up this food truck again for a delicious snack. read more

I'm torn... I keep going back, but I want to tell you its "meh". El Mariachi: Chiptole chicken, corn, cilantro, green onions and tomato... juicy meat, loads going on in here but tasted like nothing. I loved the texture of the shell, flakey and light. Too bad it was just... nothing Cubana: like ropas viejas in a flakey shell. This has been my favorite by far. Columbian: cornmeal (awful shell), beef, carrots, onion, cilantro, special sauce. One for $3.5, or 3 for $9, and $1 for soda/water/tea PS- the empanadas are SUPER greasy. Actually they are overly greasy that by the time I left Franklin Square and got back to my office at 13 & L (yea 2 blocks) not only had the empanadas soaked through their holders, the napkins and the bag, it ruined everything in my satchel. What's great about these empanadas is that it's fried and it makes the skin of the empanadas so crispy. I think because of the chorizo filling, it was a little too oily for my tastes. My friend assured me that this is better than Julia's, so I found it and gave it a shot. False. Julia's is still queen of empanadas! D.C.'s are good, but not stunningly mouthwatering like Julia's. I'm pretty sure they're smaller too, and there weren't any sweet options to have as dessert. The crust is very crispy, and the options are creative. I love crispy food, and the empanadas are certainly that. If you are on a budget I believe this food truck does the least damage to your wallet compared to the others. read more
