I live ~10 min drive north from this location. This is my second time coming for a private event and both times I've come, I've said out loud, "I should order takeout from them once a week!!" They operate a deli counter in the front and a bar / speakeasy in the back. You can rent out the bar space for private events. Last night, we had the space (and a bartender!) to ourselves, along with 3-4 different types of sandwiches. There is something SPECIAL about their seeded Italian bread. The perfect flakiness and texture. I enjoyed the chicken fontina and Italian. The caprese was my least favorite--not sure if they use a balsamic or what, but the flavor wasn't coming through. Before I left, I decided to order a large chicken cheesesteak to take home for lunch the next day. It was a bit of a risk to order a hot sandwich that I would have in the fridge overnight but I heated it up in our air fryer/toaster oven for all of 10 mins and the bread was good (not soggy) and the sandwich itself was delicious. I enjoyed it so much, I didn't stop to take a photo until the last bite :) It's a decent size sandwich--I ate half for lunch (along with my own chips and veggies) and have another half for tomorrow so while it's not cheap, I think it's reasonable. read more

My coworkers and I visit Capo Deli on Florida Avenue NW almost weekly and generally enjoy the food and service. Typically, when the smaller gentleman takes my order, everything is prepared correctly. Unfortunately, this is the second occasion where my order was incorrect when taken by another employee. I ordered a California cheesesteak with pickles and a chicken cheesesteak with hot peppers, along with pickles and hot peppers on the side. Upon returning to the office, I discovered the hot peppers had been added to the California cheesesteak, there was very little mayo, and neither sandwich included cheese. In addition, the sandwich was barely cut, and when I picked it up to eat, it immediately fell apart. Given that the sandwiches are approximately $20 each, I would expect greater attention to quality and order accuracy. As a regular customer, this experience was disappointing. read more

Maybe it was just me. For others who have visited this place were you curious as to why there was a guy always sitting in front of the freezer and why people were going in it? Well I found out after I left that the "freezer door" to the left is the entrance to a speakeasy. Ok on the review. There is room if you choose the option to sit and eat but not much room. This place seems to be more of a grab and go and many know exactly what they came in here. When it comes to trying out a new deli I usually go with a reuben or Italian and I went with the latter. Hey it is an Italian deli so no surprise of no reuben. There are plenty of selections but seeing I was doing a grab and I go I went my choice with no lettuce or tomato to keep it from getting soggy. When I finally bit into it the bread had a nice crunch but nothing that will be scraping the roof of your mouth. Kind of reminds me of French bread with it being soft on the inside but a nice foundation surrounding it. The flavors came together pretty good and the dressing, which can be bought there, had a nice tangy taste. This was something different and in a good way. Many places have their own version of the Italian where some might include one particular meat while others do not. I see myself coming back here again to try some of their other items. I don't want just a bowl of leaves - the meat portion was large as well! however, it is a sandwich spot, meaning the meat wasn't really meant for a salad. the turkey very plasticy in texture and super stuck together. I've never actually had the food at Capo Deli, but I've been here plenty of times at night, and it's consistently a great time. On the weekends, there's a speakeasy in the back, which a lot of people don't expect since it looks like just a sandwich shop from the outside. That alone makes it a fun spot to pull up to if you're looking for something a little different. The vibe really starts picking up around 11 p.m. into midnight, so this is more of a late-night move than an early one. Mikey, the owner, who also works the door, is super friendly and always welcoming. The rest of the staff is cool as well, which honestly makes a big difference when it comes to the overall experience. Every time I've come here, the energy has been right and I've ended up having a good night. I haven't been here in person, so I can't speak to that experience, but I've recently ordered via Uber Eats a few times and its quickly become a favorite delivery spot for me. So far, I have had their Italian and meatball sub, their Capo cheesesteak, the banana bread pudding, and the brownie. Their large subs are huge and could easily be two meals or split between two people. The cold cuts and toppings on the Italian were fresh and delicious. I could have used a bit more Italian dressing, but that is personal preference. The cheesesteak was really good and had plenty of meat on it, but I think they either gave me the original cheesesteak instead OR just didn't put much marinara on it. Still delicious and it arrived hot and cheesy, but I couldn't taste or see the sauce. The meatball sub was my favorite, though. Possibly the best meatball sub that I have had. The meatballs were tender and super seasoned/flavorful. This one had a good amount of marinara on it. And they were generous with the cheese, as well. For the subs, I've gotten the seeded Italian a couple times, which was really good, but I recently tried their Philly roll instead and I thought that was even better. Both desserts I tried were also tasty! The brownie was super fudgy and yummy, and the banana bread pudding was really good - perfect amount of bananas and had chocolate chips in it. My food was also done and arrived super quickly. Overall, this is now my go-to sub spot. It's a pretty standard Deli but really only good for takeout since it is small and the seating area is really only serviceable as a waiting areas. I got a to-go of their "Capo's special." it was very, very good and DID NOT skimp on the meat! Totally worth the price and the flavors were on point. It wasn't in the best part of town and we did have a person with mental illness shout a lot of every kind of slur at us on our walk from the Metro. I don't hold this against the Deli, so do with that what you will. I give a minus on service because the girl I was ordering from did not know even the basics of the menu or what came on a given sub. Great food but trouble with delivering the sammie. I ordered through DoorDash because I was working in our hotel room while hubs was at a job site. I had clients back to back so I wanted to order lunch and have it left at my hotel room door, contactless. Long story short, the delivery person screwed me, left my sandwich on a random table in the middle of the lobby. Great. I had to be late for my client due to taking 10 minutes to get downstairs to hopefully retrieve the food. When I finally was able to eat, OMG!!! I was so happy because this hero was very similar to the deli I was not able to visit when I was home for Christmas. I honestly could have devoured the entire hero but saved the other half for hubs. Speaking of, the hero was massive and I ordered the small! The bread was fresh. The meats were fresh. The dressing was crispy and flavorful. I went in for a tuna salad sub. I got a large because I figured I'd eat twice, which is typical for me with a large 11"-12" tuna sub. It was roughly $20, but you get mostly bread. Where is the tuna for my $20? I ended up eating the entire sandwich. It seems as if they use the bottom half of the roll for the tuna and the top for veggies, instead of filling the roll with tuna and then putting the veggies on top. Great spot for some hand-made deli sandwiches, both hot and cold. We were looking to have a rooftop picnic at my daughter's new apartment complex, so we swung by for a mess of subs and some drinks for our meal. We ordered three large subs and they easily fed the five of us. The Italian combo sub on seeded Italian bread was slightly dry (the bread itself), but had a great mix of deli meats, provolone cheese and veggies. Wish there was some kind of dressing on it, but we used an available Italian salad dressing to jazz it up a bit. The Cuban sandwich was warm, pressed and filled with all the right stuff including sliced ham, thick slices of pork, Swiss cheese, pickles and slathered with yellow mustard. The cheesesteak was probably the best sandwich of the bunch served with thinly shaved (and grilled) beef topped with melty provolone cheese and grilled peppers and onions. Everyone enjoyed our feast as we cut-up all three subs so everyone had a hunk to sample. Great weather day for our rooftop meal, and the subs really hit the mark! read more

I can't speak to the food in the deli but I can tell you that the speakeasy behind the big freezer door is lit. No, literally. They frequently set the bar on fire when pouring a big line of shots. I'm not sure how the fire alarm isn't triggered but I'm here for it. The back of this unassuming deli features luxe decor, big ass chandeliers, two bars, and a few booths (consider yourself lucky if you snag one of those). The bartenders are absolutely amazing. They kept up with the large crowd all night and seemed to be having plenty of fun doing it. The DJ was pretty great too, playing a mix of old school and new hits. I'm not in DC often but next time I am, you can bet I'll be back at Capo for more shots and maybe I'll even try the deli... although I'd be perfectly happy just sticking to shots. read more

Found this place on door dash and I must say I'm happy I did. This is a true Italian deli and the sandwich i ordered was spot on. I ordered the sm turkey capicola and the quality of every topping was spectacular. The sesame bread made everything come together.
