Dr. Cheng is great: great exam, computerized office, nice selection of frames (and great advice from him on picking them), professional service and fun atmosphere. This young man could teach a lesson or two to some of these older more established optics places. As this is my neighborhood, I am very happy that he decided to settle here. read more

DC Optics has changed the way I view eye care. Literally. After a "less than pleasant" past experience, I have managed to avoid all optometrists for the past two years and finally broke down and went to DC Optics today (after a glowing review from my husband). I have never been so comfortable at any doctors office in my life. Dennis Cheng and his partner Michael are both personable and professional and I felt relaxed the second I walked through the door. Unlike many doctors, Dennis talks to you like mature adult, explaining every aspect of the eye exam in an accessible way, allowing the patient to understand every part of the process and the technology used in the office. I left feeling grateful for a painless eye exam and even a little bit smarter about what is involved in making it happen. Sure- the warm tea and adorable dog dont hurt the ambience of the store, but what really makes this an amazing experience is the sincerity, kindness, and professionalism of the doctors who run it. I guess yet another five star review. And it's well deserved! I went to DC Optics on recommendation of a friend, when I told her I've always found optometrists to be pushy / apathetic. Go over to a chain place like lenscrafters or cohens and they slam out your eye exam in under 10 minutes to ensure they can get as many people in that chair in a day as possible. Have any questions? Forget about it! But with Dennis, I thought, finally, an optometetrist that actually seems to care about my eyes! I felt very comfortable with him and he took his time to explain everything he was doing and why, taught me a lot of things about my eyes and how better to care for them, and patiently answered all my questions. He actually told me that the reason it can take a moment to book with him is because he only books 4 appointments a day and only so many per week, because rather than try to make more money by having a bunch of people in there one after the next, he'd rather be able to take his time with patients and not make anyone feel rushed. Exactly what I was looking for. Plus he's got sleeve tattoos and a sense of humor-- now that's my kind of doc! read more

This place really deserves all of its rep! Very neat shop with lots of different option for tour prescription glasses or sunglasses. My eye exam also went really well. Dr. Cheng takes his examining your eyes which is really nice. You don't feel like you are being rushed out. The rest of the staff is also very friendly and helpful. Dr. Cheng went above and beyond to help me feel relaxed and comfortable during my appointment which was not easy being that I have a fear of anything getting close to my eyes. I highly recommend him to anyone suffering from ommetaphobia or anxiety in general. A visit to Dr. Cheng's office is one of the most seamless and positive I have encountered. He is efficient, attentive, and sure to speak clearly and slowly when explaining medical terms to me, a technically-averse person. My only critique is getting in contact with him. Sometimes I just really just need to call and ask a quick question, and it can be kind of annoying/difficult to type out a whole message and wait for a response. It sometimes feels like stopping by the office is the better option, because I prefer to have a conversation, but that also takes time. I say all this to say, I still strongly appreciate all the pros to visiting Dr Cheng, they definitely outweigh the minimal cons, and I plan to continue seeing him for my eyewear needs. read more

Dr. Cheng's office is very warm and welcoming-different from any office I have been too! His receptionist was friendly-even texting me throughout the week to make sure I had everything I needed and had any questions (very helpful as I am unable to make a call during day). Dr. Cheng is awesome! He identified what was causing my eye strain and suggested low strength reading glasses, which has solved the problem. Very thorough eye exam using all the newest technology. Got new contacts that fit WAY better than my old ones! I had my heart set on some Warby Parker frames, which Dr. Cheng was very cool about. Some additions to the frames selection would be great though. I love that he brings his dog to the shop. She is so cute! Definitely check into DC Optics if you need an eye exam. Seriously restored my faith in eye doctors. Having had so many terrible experiences ranging from childhood to that crazy place Park Slop Eye, Dr Cheng put me at ease, gently scolded me for sleeping with my contacts in, and made the experience of getting an exam and ordering more contacts incredibly painless. Accepted my insurance, was prompt with my appointment with no wait, total 1-on-1 attention, and has made ordering more contacts a smooth process. Will be back soon for glasses! read more

I have gone to many an optometrist over the years and never thought that I would find it enjoyable - but Dr. Cheng proved me wrong. Their space is unclutterred, paper-free, and patrolled by Ollie the super sweet French Bulldog. Wandering around and browsing eyeglasses, making a cup of coffee in their snack corner, and playing with Ollie all in all made for an unsually pleasant experience. Excellent eye exam. Was glad it was offered without having to get glasses. I had no chance to check the health of my eyes (not just vision test) for years, therefore I inquired if I could do so even if I would not be buying glasses. The ones I am wearing now are still fine, though one eye bothers me a times... but is usually when tired. I inquired via yelp to several places and even if they did not accept my insurance provider I still chose to go as it was the closest to me and because it had great reviews. Online experience: The interaction via Yelp and email was quick and clear. I got all the info requested and was able to schedule an appointment via ZocDoc relatively soon. Would have preferred not to use ZocDoc and schedule directly with DC Optics, but that was a minor nuisance. Perhaps ZocDoc helps the practice manage its scheduling and patients/customers. Contacted via email to verify coverage an received followup by the assistant via email to let me know my provider's plan wasn't among those accepted and later got notified the appointment I scheduled would get cancelled. I replied asking to keep it as scheduled as I was ok with paying out of pocket. Offline experience: The day of the eye exam I actually got a text asking if I would like to come in a bit earlier (about 30 min or so). As I was already on my way there to arrive on the scheduled time, Unfortunately I didn't have that flexibility since had also scheduled other errands accordingly. But got there on time if not a few min. earlier. Just be aware that if you do schedule something there's a chance the Dr. Cheng might see you a bit earlier (I guess the person before me canceled last minute?). I was greeted by the two assistants at the front desk and asked to fill in a questionnaire about health record and such... the usual. Took some 5 min. or so. Then the other assistant took the scan of my retina with two electronic devices located to the left of the front desk area. After that Dr. Cheng showed me to the exam room and proceeded to check my vision first (regular prescription lenses portion of the common exam) slit lamp and examination of the health of the retina previously scanned. He also recommended also better method to clean the exterior or the eye more effectively reassuring me that I can apply more pressure and be more "energetic" than my usual routine which at time was not as effective as needed. Exam reassured me as the doctor find my eyes to be healthy and despite a slight prescription change it's all in order. I'd recommend DC Optics to anyone needing an eye exam... of course if your provider is accepted, then that's even better since, while not astronomical, the cost of a comprehensive exam is still a sizable amount and in this case was almost double than the quote I received from a different doctor (also highly rated on Yelp) which got back to me after I already had my exam at DC Optics. In conclusion, while it was still worth the cost, I'd advise others to make sure you check all the alternatives if you are on a tight budget and have to pay out of pocket. read more

Dr. Cheng is hands down the best optometrist I've ever had. And I've been wearing glasses for 20+ years. It goes beyond him just being incredibly personable. He has technology available so I don't have to get my eyes dilated (yay!). And he was the first to mention he can make single vision lenses specifically for artists that need to see a certain distances. Can't say enough good things about this eye doctor! My glasses broke in half this morning and I was overdue for an exam anyway. Even though they were booked up, they managed to squeeze me in for an appointment. Everything was fast and easy, and all the exam tools are super up-to-date technologically. Love coming here! Dr. Cheng is great and very friendly. You're in and out in a flash so no long waits as with most optometrists. The decor here is what first attracted me. It's very fun with art, cartoons, and action figures everywhere. His dog also hangs out near the desk and is possibly the best behaved dog I've ever met. I've been here two years in a row now for my yearly checkups and I intend to keep going! Also, major BONUS: They don't do that annoying air puff in your eyeball to dilate your eyes. I was able to come across this neat optical store/doctor's office because my wife needed to get a new prescription as well as get a new pair of fashionable frames to update her old and slightly out of style pair. Initially I was only tagging along...for moral support...but when my wife told me how much she liked her experience with the doctor, it got me thinking that I should get an exam too, having never had one, and that also, if I'm going to do so, it should only be with a doctor with a good reference. I don't trust many doctors. Since there's simply no better reference than my own wife...I asked Dr. Cheng (the sole proprietor/doctor) if he was available for an examination as long as I was already there. He was able to easily accommodate me and while my wife continued browsing the frames with Dr. Cheng's assistance, I used the time to go through the process of checking-in. Instead of traditional clipboard and paper-form patient registration, Dr. Cheng uses an electronic-form via iPads, which pleases both the environmentalist and the tech-junkie in me. Go Green! After completing registration, I was briefly referred to Dr. Cheng's assistant, Mike (the optician/front desk receptionist) for a quick preliminary eye-test of some sort prior to going to the private exam room. Dr. Cheng was already setup inside and was reviewing the patient information I provided on his own iPad. Mike directed me towards the office, just a few short steps away, and Dr. Cheng came out to officially greet me and welcome me as a patient. Once inside, I positioned myself on the exam chair...it was very comfortable. We began an informal dialogue about this, that, and the other thing...in order to break the ice, which I typically like to do when meeting a new doctor for the first time. I like to test the waters and get a sense of their character, if only briefly. Dr. Cheng was indeed happy to chat about anything...very cool and very nice guy. We then naturally transitioned to the exam. I quickly explained to Dr. Cheng that I've never had an eye exam with an optometrist before, though I had had plenty of exams during my years in school with those funky metal boxes, with the letter "E" facing different directions and the traffic light symbols to indicate difficulty. He appropriately laughed and certainly knew exactly what I was talking about. From there, Dr. Cheng told me that he was going to explain the entire process and that at any point if I had any questions, even if I think they might be silly, don't hesitate to ask..."ask away" he said. There's no need to go into too many details about the exam that followed, but I will just say that Dr. Cheng was diligent, thorough, and professional the entire time. It also looked like he used only the most up-to-date equipment. As well, I took him up on his offer to ask many questions which he was happy to fully answer. No question is stupid, especially when it comes to your health...true story. As it turned out my eyes were in pretty good shape...good to know...though I did discover that I have a slight astigmatism in one eye, which if I chose to get glasses or contacts could be corrected easily, leaving me with as close to a perfect 20/20 as possible. Dr. Cheng didn't pressure me into getting a prescription, instead he said I should only get one if I wanted it, since I don't really need it with my visual health in its current state. I respect his honesty...he's not looking to make needless sales. Overall, I can definitely say that my experience with Dr. Cheng was superb. He made the entire process very comfortable for me. I'm also glad to know I still see very well even though the rest of me is slowly breaking down with age...sad face...haha! I'd also like to quickly add a bit about what I noticed and liked about shop as a whole. In addition to their use of technology (iPads), dc optics has a very modern look and feel. It is beautifully decorated in its display and range of tasteful eyewear (all handpicked...I asked). One wall is entirely exposed brick...I'm sucker for that. Essentially, the place doesn't have that stale or tacky quality of more traditional optical stores, or the ghastly florescent lighting of other doctor's offices. If I wasn't there for an appointment, but just in the area, I'd feel comfortable just hanging out...there's a comfy couch, a Where's Waldo book, complimentary Keurig coffee/tea, and healthy-minded snacks. Dr. Cheng also frequently brings his adorable and well-behaved French-bulldog in to work...she's the mascot I guess! I also learned that they are a "Bike-Friendly Business" http://transalt.org/ourw.... I really like this because I ride a bicycle all the time. Bicycles Welcome! Good to know for future visits, but mostly when I'm just tagging along with my wife again! As for her, she ended up getting a really nice pair of frames that fit her face very well!
