Let's face it - there are no real secrets to losing weight and getting into shape.  Any reasonably intelligent person can scan the internet and easily find the basic principles that most authorities agree upon.  But the hard part is executing the plan.  Staying on the diet, exercising regularly - sticking with the program. Santa Monica Fit Body Boot Camp makes it about as easy as it can get.  Sure, you still have to do the work (there's no way around that), but the meal plans and nutrition information are all spelled out, you only have to show up for classes and follow along, and you do it under the personal guidance of a small group of trainers who all know you and your objectives. I've been going regularly for six months, and I've lost significant body fat and have become much stronger.  My clothes fit on my new body much better.  I'm no longer reluctant to take my shirt off at the beach.  I don't know what else I could want from an exercise and nutrition program. I was never an athlete, but I've been through many phases of "getting in shape".  Over the years I've jogged, signed up for gym memberships, trained for a marathon, had a personal trainer, ate healthy.  Just about everything "worked" to varying degrees - but I could never sustain a program for very long, or if I did, the results never seemed to be worth the effort I was expending.   I joined FBBC during a promotion which included a "challenge" -- basically a contest to see who could lose the most body fat percentage in 6 weeks.  I figured 6 weeks was a manageable period, and it also gave me a deadline to achieve specific goals.  Not just going to the gym a few times a week and doing sets on various machines and wondering if I'm really making any progress. The first couple of classes were pretty hard for me, physically.  I was completely out of shape (which is why I was there) and felt overwhelmed and taxed by the exercises.  But Daniel, the owner and head trainer, watched me like a hawk and helped me through it.  He wouldn't let me quit, but he also was prudent and didn't push me so hard that I might hurt myself or get so discouraged that I wouldn't come back.  He gave lots of advice on what to eat and drink before and after exercise to facilitate recovery. Knowing that I was under good guidance and I wouldn't die during class, I was determined to stick with the program and meet my goals, which I did and then some.  Never in my life have I stuck religiously to an exercise program for six months, but I have at FBBC and I really never think about skipping a workout.  Fortunately, classes are unlimited and you're not tied to any set schedule, so if work or life gets in the way of my routine, I just take a class at a different time or day. The whole premise of FBBC is two pronged:  High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and Nutrition (which isn't required, but is essential if you really want to make signifiant changes to your body).  HIIT is basically resistance training (weights) done on a circuit with several stations.  The workouts are only 30 minutes, but they're intense and everybody seems pretty spent at the end.  Before each session, the trainers check to see if anybody has any injuries or limitations (a sore shoulder, etc.) and then give those people modified exercises.  There are also various progressions for each exercise, so everybody is challenged equally, regardless of fitness level. Nutritional guidance is provided to take advantage of the resistance training.  By using an app to track food intake, the trainers are able to monitor your diet and make adjustments to maximize benefits.  The emphasis is on losing body fat percentage, not simply pounds (as you will be gaining muscle weight). The community is very supportive and non-competitive.  There is a wide range of fitness levels, and people focus on their own challenges, not those of others.  Because it's relatively small, people pretty much know each other by name.  I've found most members to be helpful and kind. The cost is higher than a typical big-box gym (LA Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness, etc) but significantly lower than a personal trainer.  It's equivalent or less than the cost of two sessions with a trainer monthly.  It's cheaper than any boot camp that I know of in the area, and with unlimited classes, you aren't stuck with a particular schedule of classes. To summarize -- at FBBC you are getting reasonably-priced personal training with individualized attention in the context of group classes.  Although the trainers don't stand next to you and count your reps, they do correct your form and make suggestions regarding weight increases, etc.  They all know your name, fitness level, and will always answer any questions and help you monitor your nutrition.   I've found that the best exercise program is one that you can stick with -- otherwise, you're wasting your time and money.  Santa Monica FBBC is worth giving a try to see if it fits that criteria for you. read more

I started a six-week challenge at Santa Monica Fit Body Boot Camp back in April - going in with curiosity and, I'll admit, a bit of skepticism. Don't get me wrong: Daniel, who runs the camp, is very clear about what you can expect and how to get there. For me, the goal was a loss of 5% body fat in 6 weeks - and the way to get there was training a minimum of 3 times a week as well as adhering to a strict (but feasible) nutrition plan. The training and nutrition is clearly laid out, documented and easy to follow. As the six weeks unfold, there are a lot of 'constants' I grew to expect and appreciate: - Daniel (and Sarah) are excellent coaches, or rather: mentors. Even when a class is busy, there is attention to detail: Form, motivation, etc. - Individual attention: If you have any injury or problem area, Daniel will find a modified workout to work around or with that issue, with the goal of accommodating and eventually eliminating that issue. - Daniel will keep tabs on you, in a good way: Weekly check-ins, review of your nutrition tracking, adjustments as needed, etc. - Importantly: Any questions will be answered. It's all very motivating, there is a positive vibe in the room and Daniel / Sarah will make sure you leave with a smile on your face - even when you just pushed yourself to the limit. I saw progress on a weekly basis, got more energy, and got to a point where I was not happy when I missed a workout. The positive reinforcement and the crew holding you accountable are a great combination. It feels personal and customized, because it is. Ok... so I had moved nearby and found these guys on yelp. I wanna begin by saying, THIS IS THE BEST, MOST EFFICIENT, and ACCESSIBLE bootcamp I have ever been a part of. Daniel and Q are rockstars! They make each routine fun and challenging so you never get bored, they watch you like they have eyes in the back of their heads so it's like a circuit training session with a personal trainer! They are incredibly knowledgeable and considerate of anyone that has an injury and offer modified moves. I've been a sports rehab therapist for 11 years and they really know their stuff in engaging proper body mechanics! It's not about pushing sloppy reps around but getting the most out of each rep. The environment is so welcoming, just your average Joe's coming in and working for a better version of themselves. From the housewife to the businessman anyone can come here not feeling like it's a fashion show to work out. It's my favorite part! This is am effective fitness program. Not only did I get stronger but I saw a difference. But it's important to follow the workout and diet to get the best results. The easiest part was actually the exercises. They are quick but i burned more calories in the 40 minutes than i did during an entire hour doing any other routine. Tried this gym out for 3 weeks and really liked it. Daniel and his trainers are very good, tough and very knowledgeable. They can adjust all exercises based on fitness level and if you have any injuries. The classes are basically in the morning and in the evening. I felt the schedule was a little limited and not enough time to stretch out as another class was either starting right afterwards or they closed for the afternoon. I do think it's very expensive at about $170-$190 a month (depending on the package) seeing as you don't have a lot of access to the place or equipment but if you want personal attention and need a push this is the place for you. read more

After scheduling what i thought was a one on one consultation, i showed up and realized it was a small group sales pitch. I only had 30 minutes available and the staff member said I had to stay for the whole time or come again. He also said that there was nothing that was able to be discussed about the program over the phone, because papers needed to be signed. He also said he wasn't willing to talk over the phone because it would be on his own "free time", and wasn't willing to accommodate. Poor first impression, I'll find somewhere else to spend my money. read more

I've always been too lazy and too cheap to sign up for a gym. Even though I have always been insecure about my weight and body, I always made excuses not to start taking my health seriously. Even when I was at my heaviest in college, I didn't think to change my lifestyle. In the past six years, I've changed my diet by cutting out meat and alcohol, and decreasing my sugar intake which have definitely helped slow down the speed at which I was gaining weight, but I wasn't losing weight and I still wasn't satisfied with my body. I did the 21-Day Fix DVD's at home, but even then, I was half-assing my fitness routine. It was incredibly frustrating having to watch the same routine every week on my 13" laptop, which would often skip sets and make me lose momentum. After my last birthday, I had a wake-up call. I wasn't satisfied with my image and I knew I needed to do something about it. My friends were going to the gym and losing weight, and I felt like I needed to try, too. I was overwhelmed with the number of gyms available in LA, but I knew I didn't want to sign up for LA Fitness or 24-Hour because I knew I needed direction. I tried a different boot camp studio in Santa Monica, but the gym was very small and the fees were pretty high, plus I would've had to pay extra for a nutritionist. I was hesitant about signing up for Fit Body Boot Camp because no one ever picked up the phone when I called, but I saw from the website offers that I could try a week of classes for free, so I really didn't have anything to lose by trying it. I am so, so glad I did! I was intimidated by Daniel at first. He even has a sign in his studio that reads "I'm not bossy, I'm motivational," which truly speaks to his method of teaching. He isn't bossy, nor is he mean. He truly cares about his students and motivates us to become a better (stronger) version of ourselves. He observes us to measure our progress, and understands what we can handle and where we need to push ourselves. He's incredibly positive, and always encourages us throughout the class. He also observes our form throughout our sets to make sure we're doing them correctly, so we don't hurt ourselves and we get the most out of our workout. He is patient in explaining our sets (no matter how many times I get it wrong!). He makes sure we stretch after every workout, so you don't hurt the next day, changes up the routines every day, so you never get bored, and he has great playlists to keep you pumped throughout your 6am workout. He has a capacity of 20 people per class, which are mostly women, but there are a few men in the classes I attend. He's never creepy or inappropriate with his students, nor does he show any favoritism, and he encourages us collectively and individually. I feel like the studio has a lot of great students, too. We're all on different places of the fitness spectrum, but it's a fun and positive community of students supporting each other - not judging each other. I never, ever thought that I would enjoy exercising or be the type of person who wakes up at 5, 6, 7am to go to the gym to work out. I even get up at 8am on Saturdays to make sure I get my full body workout class (my favorite of the week!). Even when I walk in there, low on energy, I somehow find myself pushing through every workout and finishing the class, feeling accomplished. I'm so glad I gave SMFBBC a chance because it has completely changed my lifestyle. I feel happier, more energetic, and more confident in my own skin. I never thought exercise could do this for me. What's more, I am no longer obsessed with trying to "lose weight." I went from not being able to do knee push-ups to doing (assisted) pull ups! I've gotten stronger in almost two months, and my fitness goals have changed to something more tangible. Hopefully, one day, I'll be able to join my classmates doing handstands on the walls. I love patronizing small businesses, and Daniel has been running this studio on his own for almost a year. He knows what he's talking about, and is always available. If you ever go out of town, you can ask to visit a FBBC in another city so you don't miss out on workout days. I've been working out here 4-5 times per week for over a year now, and am enthusiastically giving five stars. I am 39 yrs old and had never stepped foot in a "gym" before, only yoga studios. But after a years-long lapse in yoga where I let work overwhelm my entire life and I put self-care on the back burner, this gym has exceeded all expectations I had for getting back in touch w my body and getting full-body fit. The owner/on-site trainer, Daniel, takes pride in this small business he built and manages entirely himself, and that good energy spills over into a relaxed, happy environment. Everyone is focusing on themselves. I would be shocked if anyone who works out here feels bad vibes, competitiveness or any macho vibes bc I've never felt any at all. The clientele is about 80% female btw. Daniel has literally changed my life (for the better) twice. I first met him a few years ago when I was paired with him for personal training at Equinox. I worked out with him for about 9 months, and aside from dropping 15 pounds and training for my first half marathon, I just physically and mentally felt the best I had in a long time. After Daniel left Equinox, we reunited again earlier this year when I needed a little discipline in my workout routines. He's so well-rounded when it comes to fitness and nutrition. So much to the point that he puts incredible emphasis on nutrition as a partner to fitness. We did everything from beach boot camps, resistance band training, kettle bells, interval training, boxing, yoga and more. Daniel is just a genuine person, who cares an incredible amount about his clients and helping them to achieve their goals. You truly get a personal trainer in a group setting - something very rare. I really felt comfortable in each class and never felt intimidated by anyone. Daniel and Sara know how to push you without being too much or too less. I surveyed most the people as I went in and everyone who was there loved the program and had nothing but positives. It seems everyone has the same common goal of strengthening up rather than showing off. It is the most ideal first step into any fitness journey. Lastly, parking was never a problem for me, crazy to say in Santa Monica! Things to note: 1. This is a place that is only beneficial if you can REALLY commit to it. I was only able to attend 3 times a week, sometimes 4 if work/life allowed. Therefore, by the end of the month I saw results and felt stronger. However, I could have saw more in myself if I followed the nutrition guide better. This program is truly a commitment. 2. Although this class does push you, some days it doesn't feel like 30 minutes is enough. Only on Saturdays classes are 45 minutes and I wish it was like that throughout the week. Sometimes I would walk out ready to go do extra cardio because it felt like my body just kicked into high gear and it was over. But to even it out- Maybe I didn't push hard enough during the circuit. 3. It's not cheap. Overall, I would say this is the perfect first step to beginning your fitness journey on the right foot. They do provide all you need to succeed. However, when you join you need to make sure you're truly ready for it. You will be drenched with sweat after every work out! I signed up for personal training after my friend lost over 30 lbs in 6 weeks. Daniel challenges my mind and body each session; he works every muscle group and as long as you stick with his reasonable meal plan you'll see results within the 1st week and continue to results every week after. Daniel is very attentive and my results were his business, he takes weekly measurements and will also update your meal plans. Excellent place and trainer! Great workout in only 30 minutes! It is definitely not easy, you will feel exhausted at the end and it will feel good! What I appreciate the most is trainer's (Daniel Laga) attitude. He knows how to motivate to make sure you get the most out of your workout. In addition, I appreciate that he is teaching you exercises from basic to advanced version. You're not expected to do a more advanced version until you build the strength and form to do it. That's the way it should be done but some classes are not thought that way exposing those less experienced to injuries. I have been training with Daniel for two months and have already experienced a big change. I've always been health-conscious and into fitness, but working with Daniel really helped me to pick it up a few notches. In fact, in the short period of time we've been training, I already lost 5% of my body fat (and I didn't start off overweight either so it was pretty incredible to get such a good result)! Daniel has been amazing with tailoring my workout and nutrition to help me reach my goals. Being vegan, it is definitely more challenging to get the amount of protein needed for my workout regimen, but Daniel sat with me for nearly two hours mapping out diet options. I truly feel more energized and have found that I even recover faster with the diet - and I didn't have to compromise my veganism at all. The workouts with Daniel are challenging- he pushes you because he is acutely aware of your ability and can therefore maximize the workout time. It's never boring either- from weight lifting and kickboxing to jump rope and even surfing, he mixes up the routine and gives you a full body workout. And he always makes sure you stretch- balancing strength training with flexibility. Daniel is a smart, dedicated, fun trainer. He makes you work hard but he works just as hard on you. He always wants what is best for his clients and more than any other trainer I've met, truly cares that you succeed. Santa Monica Fit Body Bootcamp is by far the best work out I've ever done. I have never really been into working out on the regular before I started coming here. After months of bad-habit eating and minimal exercise, I was looking for a place that provided 1) a quick high-intensity interval workout, 2) variety so I don't get bored, 3) small-feel, personalized training. Fit Body covers all the bases--quick 30 minute workout (+15 for instructions, warm up/cool down), nutrition support (meal-planning, nutritional classes), small group (no more than 20 in a class), and so much one-on-one time with our trainer, Daniel. Daniel is the real deal--he tells you how it is and pushes you to be stronger and more fit. He knows when to challenge you and is constantly adjusting your form. I'm at week 8 and feeling great! I joined because I wanted to lose fat, lean out, and "look skinny". Here are my results thus far (in 7.5 weeks): Fat Loss: 10.3LBs, Muscle Gain: 4.7LBs. I love this place! Daniel and Sarah are great trainers. They give you such undivided attention and know how to help you modify until you know how to do something. This is a great program! I've never had a exercise an nutrition program that was so comprehensive! I was recovering from a difficult pregnancy and foot injuries but Daniel not only carefully adjusted the exercises for my injures, but he also made sure that I did proper work (stretches) at home to help the healing. This program does produce results--just make sure you have a good 2 months of a clear diary because you will be learning a lot of nutrition and that takes time/cooking prep. The people who attend are all very nice (making for a good atmosphere) and Daniel is a fun instructor, always varying the exercises, watches and corrects your form and makes sure to challenge you so that you progress. Three stars because this place gets results! I want to start with the pros. Sarah and Daniel are great fitness instructors. They have modified workouts for the newbies as well as advanced for those who want to challenge themselves.They also stress nutrition and create meal plans and send recipes. You also get motivated emails sent to you daily. They watch vigilantly and this helps to ensure you are performing the exercise correctly as well as prevent injuries. They have challenges to keep you motivated. I participated in a 6 wk boot camp challenge. I definitely felt my body looked better and I felt stronger. It's also a community environment, I feel like everyone is working toward their individual goals not competing and I really liked that. Now for the cons, parking. There is a very small parking lot it's usually full and very difficult to get in and out. Metered and street parking are available however most of the street parking a permit is required. There is only one area for changing, one bathroom. And every time I used it the toilet was leaking. No showers. No water for free or for purchase. Finally when I inquired about the pricing for membership, I was asked to come in. The price should be public on a website. It makes me feel maybe everyone isn't getting the same price. Speaking of price 197 for unlimited access. 187 if you commit to contract. There was no step down offered. I don't want unlimited access as I enjoy yoga, hiking, biking, cardio so it would have been nice if there was package for 2-3 days weekly. I also thought the pricing was a bit steep for no amenities. They do have an app where you can sign up for classes but it was buggy and required reinstallation a lot. Obviously this is a place with a few growing pains.
